Taxes On Used Car Purchase Chicago?

I am buying a used car in Cook County, IL. (I am in the dealership right now.) Is the dealer correct to charge me 9.5% tax?
I want to confirm that this is correct and not a scam, but it surprisingly hard to find simple confirmation on the web. Does anyone know if this makes sense? Thanks

this says it's normal. Can't vouch for that site, but it sounds right that Cook county will take every penny they can...

Yes, the dealer collects the sales tax. Perfectly normal, just like any other purchase. Mid's link is a good one for seeing the appropriate rate.

It's legit. If you buy from a private party, you get a letter from the county several months after the purchase informing you of the tax.

Yep. You'd have to pay it yourself if it were a private party sale, but dealers collect sales taxes on every vehicle they sell.

Response by poster: Thanks. I bought the car. It is shocking that there is no official website that just explains the tax rate in an easy to understand way - or at least any that I can find after a ton of googling.

It's confusing because there are different rates stacked on top of one another depending on where you are: state, county and city. And then there is the possibility there is some special tax rate (a TIFF kind of thing). So there is no easy to understand answer. At one point when the Cook County tax rate was raised, there was a single intersection (St. Charles road and Mannheim) that had, due to a combination of the above, the highest sales taxes in the country.
