Will I ever be able to hi-five again?

I injured my pinkie finger a year and a half ago and it is still giving me grief. It is now usable for most things, but if that side of my hand experiences any kind of impact the finger will be noticeably stiff and sore for days. (it's always worse when I wake up) Has anyone had a similar problem that got fixed? Like, really fixed?

I've been to a doctor and even a hand specialist; they concluded that it wasn't too terrible and there was not much to be done.

But it's still an annoying problem (no hi fives! no "pounds", no hand drumming, etc...) and I'm curious if anyone has had similar issues that they have fixed with physical therapy or something else. Specific exercises/massages/magical ointment recommendations also appreciated.

YANMD, YANMPT, etc...

Medical details: As best I can tell, the tendon is inflamed in a particular place that hurts when it passes under one of the "pulleys" under my middle knuckle.
It's obviously not severed but it just seems like the tendon will never repair itself to a point where a little impact isn't going to cause it to freak out for days. (and a large impact for much longer)

Diagrams etc...

I have the same thing with one of the tendons in my shoulder. It's not fun.

A cortisone injection kept me asymptomatic for a year, until a fateful night of drunken debauchery (and sleeping awkwardly on said shoulder) brought it back.

Try the injection; it might give your body enough time for it to heal properly, and is minimally invasive.

Visit a local Certified Hand Therapist.

Second opinion time. Go to a different hand surgeon. In my practice, 18 months of unexplained pain means time for an MRI, assuming all x-rays have been normal. Not sure if you mean PIP joint, middle knuckle between DIP and MCP or MCP joint, middle of the hand. Regardless, time to see another specialist.

In the meantime, you can still high five by using your other hand and looking at their elbow.
