Who painted this?

Painting identification: Who painted this? A friend saw it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. He said it was a 19th century American painting hanging in a visible storage area and not in a regular gallery and that it wasn't labeled. Thanks!

Google's new reverse image search is handy for lookups like this. On the image search bar click on the camera icon on the right, then enter the URL for the image.
