Any DOC hut spots left on MilFord Track for Ney Year 2011/2012?

At this late stage, is there any way to grab a spot in the DOC huts along the Milford Track around New Year 2011/2012?

I didn't realise they had gone on sale through the website already (dodgy travel agent info) and missed out. We can still do the trek staying in private huts through one of the tourcompanies like Ultimate Hikes, but you pay a lot for the privilege.

We'd prefer to do it ourselves, and were hoping there was a travel company that has spots in the DOC huts reserved that we could join? Or even any other way to do it unguided that won't cost as much as the ~$2000 that ultimate hikes will cost.

I would suggest ringing DOC directly. They're usually pretty good at pointing you in the right direction. As for people that have reserved slots, maybe you can get on a hiking forum and see if you can find some people who may not want their slots or what have you.
