File management systems and logic - where to start?

I'm working with an internal team that does a lot of creative work for the rest of the organization - and our filing system is a bit of a mess. How would you approach a comprehensive plan to improve their system? I'm looking for tips big and small, general and specific. [more inside]

My wife is having a crisis of confidence in her career -- how to help?

My wife (early 40's) is self-employed in a creative industry, and a huge part of her identity is wrapped up in her career. The slog of scraping together your own gigs, pursuing grant funding (so paltry in the U.S.), and a general sense of life having fewer "big break" opportunities for artists at her age and post-Covid is burning her out and her sense of self-worth is precarious. She's seeing a therapist she likes, but what can I do to help her regain her confidence (without getting sucked into a whirlpool of anxiety and hopelessness myself)?

How to look impressive at my job

I feel a tension at my new workplace between being effective and appearing effective. I am a good worker with a fair bit of experience, thoughtful and detail-oriented, but there is a separate matter of being impressive where I feel like I am lacking. [more inside]

GoFundMe-like service for a beneficiary in Jakarta, Indonesia?

The leader of my online gaming group just got out of the hospital with a bill he cannot pay. I suggested that he set up a GoFundMe so our group could pitch in, but Indonesia is not one of their supported countries. Is there a similar service that works in Indonesia where multiple people can send him small amounts of money without having to reveal the real names or banking details of the donors or recipients? We all only know each other by our character names in the game and most of us would like to keep it that way. [more inside]

Post-Interview Etiquette: Executive Search Edition

A month ago, I had a first-round interview with an executive search firm, during which I was told "the hiring manager will interview candidates in the first week of May, then schedule onsites in late May/early June". I waited until this Tueday, a week after the first week of May ended, to reach out and ask if there is an updated timeline. No response. Is there any value in reaching out a second time, or to the other staffperson listed for the search? More details below. [more inside]

More mistakes at work - getting scared now

Ive done a couple of posts about mistakes at work. They have become repetitive and it's got to the point this week my manager got very annoyed with me and is now reviewing all my postings at the end of each day. She told me it's not acceptable for me to keep making the same mistakes after being in the job for just under a year. [more inside]

Divestment tools

The American Friends Service Committee produces this tool to aid divestment campaigns from mass incarceration, occupation and detention. Is there an analogous website/resource/program for helping organizations and individuals divest from the fossil fuel industry? Also, if there are other tools for 'ethical' investing similar to this - where you can put in various investment funds and the tool tells you which bad industries these funds are invested in - I would like to see them!

Hard Stop Reminder

If you are a person who has to leave work at a certain time, say 5pm, how do you remind yourself of the time? Assume you get too many phone notifications for that to be useful and that you may not be sitting in front of a computer, so email reminders might not work. I was thinking about a super low tech watch with alarm function. Something that doesn't have to be charged frequently. Any recommendations or other suggestions? Prefer something not hideous. Some of the watches google suggested were huge and bulky. Also pondering how likely it is for watch to be worn and not forgotten which is always possible.

MA Lawyer Needed for Albatross Removal

The short story is that decades ago I had some stock escheated by the state of Massachusetts. I have questions about how/why the state was able to do this. I may be too late on this, but the stock has increased in value and I'd like to talk to a lawyer about how everything went down and if there's any hope of reclaiming it. So I'm looking for recommendations for either specific lawyers or types of lawyers (securities?) in Massachusetts that I could consult. [more inside]

Seeking advice on upcoming meeting with financial advisor

My spouse and I have never really had any money to speak of, but we recently inherited a modest sum. Our new financial advisor is recommending that we invest the bulk of the money in a mix of American Funds. However, I have concerns about the one-time fee of 3.5%. My spouse and I will be meeting with the advisor in a couple of days, and I would like to know how to approach this topic. [more inside]

Economics, GDP, debt, and deficit.

This is a question I’ve long wondered but haven’t found a good answer to. If the US govt spends approximately $2t more than it takes in, and the total US GDP is about $25t, then I think you can say that +/-7% of GDP is just debt creation? [more inside]
