Meeting up mid-way between Blackburg, VA and DC

Four of us, two coming from Bethesda, Maryland and two coming from Blacksburg, Virginia, would like to meet up somewhere mid-way between these two points between Christmas and New Year's Day. A gentle hike (perhaps in Shenandoah National Park somewhere?) and lunch is the preferred option, but we are open to other possibilities. Have any recommendations? [more inside]

I will be around the northeast of Charlottesville this Saturday. Is there a swimming hole within an hour's drive that is either lesser known, or maybe has a good chance of being nearly empty? [more inside]

Getting to the Appalachian Trail from DC

We're hiking a 100-mile section of the Appalachian Trail. We're flying in and out of DC, but our section hike starts way out at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park. We're taking the Amtrak from Harper's Ferry to get back to DC, so our return trip is covered. How do we get to our starting point? From Google maps, it looks as though there are buses and trains all through the area. DC-area MeFites, what combo of public transit, ride-share services, and walking/hitching can get us to the trail head?

Roanoke VA for St. Patrick's Day

We booked a downtown hotel and are going to spend this weekend in Roanoke, mostly because we've been in VA 20 years and have never visited Roanoke. I know about the parade and street festival on Saturday. What are the can't miss pubs/bars and restaurants we should hit this weekend?

DC-Metro area traffic issues: who's blogging about this?

I'm trying to learn more about the problems that cause motor vehicle traffic, and possible solutions for remediating said problems. I'd like to find transportation-focused blogs and Twitter accounts I can keep up with. Subject matter should include gridlock, infrastructure funding, bike lanes/safety, accident prevention, funding, and government contractors hired to research and implement said proposals. Bonus points for DC Metro area extending into Virginia, even as far south as Fredericksburg, or Richmond. [more inside]

Virginia family fun for the jaded and beach-weary

I've got an upcoming Sunday to spend somewhere in central or eastern Virginia (or optionally eastern MD/DC), with preschool and school-aged kids in tow. What are some interesting things to do in that area, that also (a) won't be super crowded on a weekend, (b) wouldn't be miserable in hot weather, and (c) aren't just The Beach? [more inside]

How to best experience the great outdoors without a driver's license?

I live and work in Blacksburg, Virginia, a good place to live without a car, which I don't own due to primarily budget, but also health/anxiety issues. And that's perfectly fine for city living, but there ain't no bus routes to the Appalachian Trail or to the Cascades waterfall or the dozens of other outdoor places I'd like to visit and hike and explore. What would y'all suggest I do? [more inside]

Transportation in very, very rural southwest Virginia

Currently, I am living with my mom in Giles County, VA, about 15 minutes outside of Blacksburg (home to Virginia Tech). I'm unable to get a license right now, and there is no public transportation here at all (until Blacksburg). I need to figure out how to get to Blacksburg more often, but that's proving hard to do. Details within. [more inside]

Good place to study in Rosslyn/Arlington, VA

We are looking for a nice place to study in the mornings. Should be within a mile of the Rosslyn metro stop. Preferably they should be open by 7:00am, reasonably quiet, have wifi, and a comfortable temperature. We like Capital City Cheesecake, if that helps. Is the Plaza Branch Library decent? [more inside]

Colonial Williamsburg early next week with kids in the rain?

My wife and the kids are flying out to Virginia on Sunday as part of Thanksgiving visit with relatives. They have a couple free days to do tourist stuff and she was wondering whether it would make sense to spend one of them visiting Colonial Williamsburg. The kids are 9, 6, and 3, and they have enjoyed visits to small historical sites run by our state historical society. Has anyone taken kids to Colonial Williamsburg? Would you recommend that others do so? Is it worth visiting even on a rainy day?
