Texas bound! Roadtrip from New Jersey to Texas.

My best friend is moving to Texas near Fort Worth like the third week of March. We're driving some stuff and her cats from Central Jersey to her new place over a period of two- three days. What are some roadtrip tips you have for us, places we must eat along the way, places we can quick stop and see something neat? Suggest away. [more inside]

Things to do in the area around College Station, Texas?

I'm going to be in College Station, Texas for a few days. I'll have a car on Sunday and be free to drive around. I'd like to see some nice small towns, maybe hit some junk shops (open Sundays?), have some delicious BBQ, see some unusual local landmark. Within an hour or two of town would be ideal [more inside]

Is there stuff to do in west Texas (if you're not utterly outdoorsy)?

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip for the summer and one possibility that I'm weirdly into is going to west Texas, which I am given to understand is not everyone's dream vacation spot! I've only been through on the train but I love the landscape and I love Texas. What I'm trying to figure out now is whether there's enough to do around there to make it a worthwhile trip. I'm going to a conference, staying at the convention center. I'll be in Houston Sunday-Wednesday, looking for food recommendations (vegetarian/pescatarian, ethnic) and also a pie-in-the-sky spa desire, within. [more inside]

Austin bike route advice

I'm going to the Austin Women's march on Saturday and will be coming into town from San Antonio. There's a good possibility that my original plan for getting there (ride with a friend, park at a park and ride south of the city, and take the bus to the capitol) is going to fall through due to a friend's illness. I'm now thinking of a different plan that would involve bringing my bike, but need some help with a potential bike route. [more inside]

Christmas in San Antonio, with snowflakes

I'll be visiting San Antonio for the 1st time, from 12/21-26, to attend my son's Air Force BMT graduation, with (adult) family, and would like some suggestions for vegan-friendly restaurants, in general, and possibly for Christmas, plus other activities. [more inside]

Public viewing of election results in Austin, TX

Myself and a group of co-workers will be in Austin, TX from Portland, OR on election day. We are pretty typical Portland liberal types and would like to find a place relatively close to downtown that serves good food (preferably BBQ or tacos), good booze and, most importantly, will be showing election results as they come in Tuesday. Dallas in one day

Starting this Saturday I will be in Dallas for a conference for five days. Most of Sunday will be free. What are some nice things to do to explore a bit of the city in one day? I love just walking around a new-to-me city, what would be a good area to do that, and how do I get there? I will be staying near East Transfer Center. Any advice on cheapish breakfast options around there are also appreciated.

driving from nashville to austin

My husband and I are driving from Nashville to Austin via Memphis. The plan is to spend one night in Nashville, one in Memphis, and then end up in Austin. A few questions: 1.) Lodging recommendations in Nashville (between $100-$150 a night and centrally located) 2.) Is it possible to drive from Memphis to Austin in one day? I saw this post detailing the horrors of I-35. Is there an alternative? Google maps says it will take approximately 10 hours. Is that accurate? 3.) Is it better to split the drive between Memphis and Austin into 2 days? If so, where should be stop for the night? 3.) Lodging recommendations in Memphis. 4.) If you could spend an additional night in either Nashville or Memphis, which would be preferable? We are a young couple who like spicy local food, cheap outings, scenic views, and live music.

Yeehaw, we are moving to Austin!

My husband and I are relocating from Philadelphia to Austin. We are headed there this weekend to scope out neighborhoods and get a handle of the city. We plan to move this summer and are interested in hearing about apartment locator services and general tidbits about the city. We are an early 30's couple, no kids, are will both be affiliated with UT Austin. We would like to live in a highrise building downtown or loft close to campus. Have you done this? Do you have building recommendations? This is what we know so far: traffic on I-35 is horrendous, summers are brutally hot, and housing prices are high... but the city is awesome! We want to get excited about the move -- tell us where to set down roots so we can explore the new city!

Public Space (Third Places) in Austin, TX

Where can I spend an idle hour or two at midday within a mile of downtown Austin, TX? I am interested in both indoor and outdoor spaces where it is possible to spend an hour working on my laptop, reading a book, etc. I am especially interested in privately owned public spaces, but public is good too. Places to stay/visit between the city centers of Dallas and Fort Worth

I'm traveling to Dallas/ Fort Worth with a friend and a six month old for five days this fall. Any recommendations for interesting or even typical places (more like great man-made lakes rather than great nature trails) to stay in or explore that are located between Dallas and Forth Worth but well outside the city centers? Help us plan a Southwestern family Christmas

We would like to rent a place for a week-long family Christmas and are trying to decide on a location. We have three groups of people: two adults in Oakland, California; two adults and four children near Salt Lake City; and one adult in Michigan. The children range in age from two to eleven, and the place has to be driving distance from Salt Lake, as the Salt Lake group can't afford to fly six people. Plus we want to keep costs down as much as possible. Other considerations inside. [more inside]
