Memorable or lovely swimming in NYC?

I'm going to be in NYC (staying in Brooklyn) for the first half of June. I've had some memorable swims and paddles while travelling, and I'm looking for suggestions of anything really good in New York - sea/ocean, indoor pool, outdoor pool. What's good? [more inside]

Why is the PATH station at World Trade Center so hard to leave?

I was housesitting recently for someone in New Jersey and took PATH to work at the World Trade Center, and walking through the station to reach the exit seemed to take longer than the train ride. (The exit I wanted, on Greenwich, seemed especially hard to reach; I had to double back across the length of the building.) Does anyone know why it's designed this way? Is it just trying to trap people in the mall? Isn't it unsafe in an emergency to have the exits so far from the trains?

NYC and LI trip seeking most economical hotel

SO and I are driving to NY to visit friends in both LI (Huntington) and Manhattan. We are looking for a hotel outside of Manhattan and taking a train into the city on 3 or 4 days. Just need safe parking and a basic level of room, like Super-8 or at most La Quinta. Not interested in AirBnB. [more inside]

NYC Theater District restaurants - affordable with decent seating?

My boyfriend and I have tickets for Hello Dolly tonight at the Shubert (44th between 7th and 8th). We were just going to get fast food for dinner but I thought it might be nice to get a sit-down meal one step up from fast food. Fast casual would be fine (especially the price range), but I'd like to go somewhere where we can get an actual seat - and a comfortable enough seat, not terrible bar stools or rickety chairs. I can find lists of fast casual in the area but it's hard to tell what the seating is like. Any recommendations that might fit the bill? Any cuisine is fine.

Christmas in New York City: What's not to miss?

We, a family of four with two adult children from New Zealand, are spending two weeks around Christmas and New York in New York City. What is not to be missed, and indeed to be avoided, from a Christmas point of view? We like food, music - classical and jazz - and museums. Any thoughts on where to have Christmas Eve or Christmas Day lunch? We have some pretty strong family traditions (mainly Hungarian) at this time of the year but these are normally based around our home. It will be exciting to try something new. We will be staying in Williamsburg if that helps. All suggestions welcome.
