Downeast Maine vacation tips

Going to downeast Maine (Acadia to Lubec). Looking for interesting, not run of the mill activities and scenic attractions for two non-hiker or kayaker, bookish folks. Good food and good brewery recs a plus, as well as diversions during the drive from Portsmouth NH area.

Day Trips From Bar Harbor Maine

My wife and I will be camping for 5 nights in Bar Harbor in mid-September - planning to spend most of our time exploring Acadia, but open to a fun day trip if anybody has suggestions. I'd probably want to limit the driving part of the day trip to no more than 2 hours each way if we are going to a specific place.

Portland, Maine: restaurants with outdoor seating + what to do

We'll be in Portland, Maine (not Oregon!) this week and because of COVID are hoping to find restaurants with outdoor seating, so we don't have to eat takeout in a park every day twice a day. We like all kinds of food but lean toward inexpensive hearty food for every-day eating vs fancy meals. Any recommendations? Also, any must-see or must-do things, or anything fun going on this week and next weekend in Portland, or within a 1 hour drive? [more inside]

Whale Watching/Island Hopping Boat Rides Near Bar Harbor, ME in April

We booked a last minute 10th anniversary trip to Bar Harbor, ME last night, hoping to fulfill my "dream" to go whale watching. The cursory internet search said whale watching begins in mid-April, but nothing seems to open before mid-May. It doesn't specifically have to be in Bar Harbor, but within reasonable driving distance. Of course any other off the beaten path suggestions are welcome. It seems a lot is still closed in mid-April so year round ideas would be very much appreciated. [more inside]

What beachy place on the U.S. east coast can I go alone but feel safe?

Looking for hotel or AirBnB recommendations walking distance from a beach. Snowflakes: female going by myself (no travel groups/guides, please); seeking a balance of safety+pleasantness between empty (would feel too unsafe to doze, walk at sunrise) and unpleasantly packed; I don't drive so need paid/free conveyance from airport/train station to hotel/beach/groceries. Dogs on vacation in Winter Harbor/Acadia Maine

What to do with 2 hound mixes for a week in and around Winter Harbor, Maine, in July? We're booked into a dog-friendly tiny house on the ocean in Winter Harbor, and I've been reading up on Acadia. We'd like to include the dogs as much as possible in our jaunts around the area. One is reliable offleash and the other is probably not. (No intention of going offleash anywhere it's not legal or without permission from the owner/caretaker.) Hikes in Acadia are the obvious choice, but what else is there? How dog-friendly is the area in general? [more inside]
