Low-key mom's birthday events in DC

We'll be traveling from CA to Washington, DC, in a few days to meet my mother and stepfather, who'll be flying in from Massachusetts. The day after we arrive is my mother's birthday, and we'd like to celebrate it in a low-key, not-too-expensive way. But I'm stumped. [more inside]

Hack my 4-way stop

Where I live, the state law changed almost 4 years ago saying that bicycle riders may treat stop signs as yield signs if there are no other vehicles present at a 4-way intersection. This is also known as the Idaho Stop. Problem is, there wasn't a widespread campaign notifying people of this change. In addition to publicizing the law change via traditional means like news reports, TV/internet ads, and direct mail, what are some concise ways to word a street sign placed at an intersection so that everyone understands the new law? Maryland blue crab in DC

Searching for good places to get Maryland blue crab in DC within Metro range of George Washington University Hospital. Bonus points for family style: picnic tables, cheap beer, smashy wooden hammers. Does such a place exist and do you love it? Please share! Thanks!

Touristing During the Day

I have three weeks approximately where I will have lots of time during the day to do touristy things without my toddler. What sorts of things are better to do during the weekdays than on weekends? Where should I visit to find these things? Do you have any specific DC things where going during weekday is so much better than weekend or at night (or not even open).

Antiques and thrift in Washington

I'm planning on taking a few trips from Seattle to smaller cities in Washington to visit antique malls, thrift stores, and other businesses of that general type. Any particular recommendations within a 4-5 hour drive/ferry of Seattle? Bonus if it's in a picturesque location we can spend the night at or otherwise enjoy. (Previously)

The Ducks go to Washington

We're taking our first trip to DC! We'll be there for 8 nights in late August/early September. We're looking for recommendations from DC natives or frequent DC visitors for cool things to do that fly under the radar (and conversely popular things we should avoid). [more inside]

Kid-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating in D.C.

Any recommendations on restaurants with outdoor seating in Washington DC? Nothing fancy or expensive since we will be with a loud energetic kid, but we need COVID-safe dining options. Restaurants (or even fast food joints) near a nice park where we can get takeout and have a picnic would also work for us. [more inside]

What interesting stuff can I do in D.C. on a Monday?

I'm taking a weekend trip to Washington, D.C., very soon. I plan to attend some of the city's great museums on Saturday and Sunday. I was hoping to tour the Capitol as well, possibly on Monday... but my congresswoman's office has not gotten back to me about when or even if I'll be able to do that. I see that most of the museums are closed on Mondays. So I'm trying to figure out what, if anything, I could do that day. [more inside]

Visit the Smithsonian - Are there better hotels 2-4 metro stops away?

Thinking of taking the family (3 kids, 10,6,2) to DC for a hotel + stay near the Smithsonian and visit one or two of the museums. It's $50 to just park at a hotel - and I thought it might be a GREAT way to have them experience the Metro...especially if it's just a couple of stops out. Bonus points for a better (cheaper) hotel experience as well (and avoid the direct traffic). [more inside]

Me and the family will be staying in DC for the upcoming weekend and would like to not use our car until it's time to come back home.
