What's a good strategy for exploring Edinburgh when accidentally there during the Fringe? Definitely going to take in some festival offerings, but that's not why we're visiting, and we don't want it to take over our trip. [more inside]

I'll be spending a week in Edinburgh in late October. I absolutely love train travel and I'd like to take as may day trips by train as possible over the week. The only requirement is that the trips have me back by 8 or 9pm every evening. Are there week or day train passes I can buy that will let me hop on and off? Any routes that you suggest? For instance there seem to be a number of rail lines to get from Edinburgh to Glasgow, is that right? Are there some rail lines/trips that are better for tourists than others? Also, what is the best way to keep track of the routes and timetables?

We are headed to the UK in late July and plan to go to Scotland for about 9 days in early August. I just realized that Edinburgh will be in the midst of its festival season in August and my partner is now thinking maybe it will be unbearably crowded and expensive, and we should avoid it on this trip. I'll be traveling in Scotland and England for a couple of weeks in February, mostly by bus. I'm an inveterate iPhone user, always tweeting, checking-in, posting photos and so on ... but I know that route will lead to financial madness. So what's best to do? I know I can jailbreak, unlock my iPhone, perhaps use another SIM card while traveling, but is the effort worth doing? Is it better to leave the iPhone at home in the US and grab a pay-go smartphone upon arrival in Edinburgh (and if so, how best)? Or do I bring the iPhone and use it via wifi only, hoping I don't slip and fall into a welcoming bit of 3G along the way?
