I'll be in Mexico City in mid-October for three days. What do I need to see & do? Priorities: a) great vegetarian-friendly eating (both budget and upscale), including fantastic pastries/sweets/ice cream, b) magical, atmospheric, walkable neighborhoods, c) cool groups of people to meet -- expats? others?, d) the very best museums, e) anything else.

Due to a late departure, various snafus in the Mexico City airport, and some extremely unhelpful and unsympathetic ground personnel, our recent trip from Acapulco (Aeromexico) to Toronto (Air Canada) via Mexico City turned into an expensive nightmare. I have googled various keywords, checked out several FlyerTalk forums and gone through similar MF threads, but I haven't located anything remotely helpful. I have an upcoming trip that includes a stopover from about 6AM to late evening in MEX. We'll be traveling with a 3-year-old, so we will probably spend the first few hours trying to get some sleep at an airport hotel. I'm wondering if anyone has an idea for something to do with the rest of the day that won't cause a lot of stress about making it back for our flight? I've never been to Mexico City. What are the usual tourist attractions? Is traffic so bad that we could only fit in something really quick and nearby? Is it even worth it to leave the airport area? Thanks!

I have a relative who will be on a business trip to Mexico City for about 10 days in March, and I am very tempted to go down there for a few days and visit. However I am also concerned about the number of vacation days I will be burning up as I already have two other short trips on the books for March. I've been curious to see D.F. Travelers of Latin America! Help me understand the current general safety/travel risk in Mexico City relative to other places I know well (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo Lima, and Tacna/Arica).
