What can't we miss on the route between Geneva and Venice?

My husband and I going to be doing a romantic roadtrip between Geneva and Venice this summer, taking a few days to stop at quirky sites or smaller towns as we go. (We'd take the train but don't want to be a slave to train schedules since we're short on time.) We normally just fly into big cities so this is our one chance to see Swiss/Northern Italian spots most easily-reachable by car! [more inside]

More on Rome—boutiques!

As per previous questions, my wife and I are going to Rome in a couple of weeks with our five year old. I’ve asked before about activities, but I’m curious what unique shops might be fun to visit. We’re planning to go to Al Sogno for a toy, but might be interested in housewares, textiles, silly hipster stuff, jewelry, gourmet items we can get through US customs, and alcohol. [more inside]

Ten hour layover in Venice with a four year old?

In the process of booking a flight from O'Hare to London, and we potentially have the option to have a ten hour layover in Venice on the way over. We (two adults and a four year old) would arrive mid-morning after an eight hour flight. [more inside]

Cheap Getaway Within Italy

I found a cheap fare to Rome at Easter and booked an overlong 13 day trip. Even cheap AirBnbs add up (yikes)...and I'm too fussy for bunk beds in youth hostels. I'll mostly be in Rome/Naples. Where can I go via train for 4 days to save a few bucks where lodgings/eats are less expensive? Just want to chill and blend in (i.e. more digital nomadism than tourism). [more inside]

Your best Rome adventures for a five year old

We will be traveling to Rome soon with our 5 year old. Thanks to the great answers on my prior AskMe, kid is now sufficiently hyped. SO and I have been to Rome before, but this is kiddo’s first time (and first time to Europe). Do you have any sure hits/can’t miss things in Rome for a five year old? [more inside]

Hyping up Rome to a 5 year old

We will almost certainly vacation in Rome this May. It is one of my wife’s and my favorite places. It will be my 5-year-old daughter’s first trip to Europe, which is exciting for her, but she doesn’t know much about Rome, compared to Paris or London. Can you recommend some age-appropriate media to introduce her to the Eternal City? [more inside]

A friend and I are spending a week in Rome, right near Vatican City. We want to see some cool, weird, old stuff, and we need specific advice on how best to do that in the Vatican. We're also interested in more general advice on where to go in Rome and Milan. [more inside]

Best 2 night side trips from Rome?

I'm taking my mom, who is Italian-Canadian and in her sixties, to Italy for 9 days as a birthday present. She has never been to Italy (or Europe for that matter). I've travelled around Europe a fair bit, but have somehow missed Italy, despite the heritage connection. We're flying in and out of Rome and, while we know we could spend 9 days there and never run out of things to see, we would still like to take a side trip and see a bit more of the country. But where to? [more inside]

Ride from Rome to fiumicino EARLY on a wednesday morning.

Rome. Traditional sports. Am I not entertained?

My wife and I will be spending a week in Rome in early May, and would like to attend a smallish-scale, local spectator sport. We aren’t sports fans, but we do enjoy the experience of being amid a community of enthusiasts, cheering on something we only vaguely understand. Scale-wise, maybe on the order of a single-A baseball game? Examples of previous wins: a high school rodeo on Molokai, course camarguaise bullfighting and joute nautique in France. So. Rome, May 2018… is there a regional tamburello championship? An obscure suburban palio? Intense bocce? [more inside]
