Visiting NY City with a curious 10 year old.

So we landed in NY City yesterday with a ten year old girl whose interests start with Harry Potter (and sometimes seemingly end there as well). Looking for things to cater to her curiosity. More details inside. [more inside]

Driving: I hates it! But it’s time to take the wheel again

Driving! I very much disliked it. It made me sweat through all my clothes. I avoided it a lot. Haven’t done it in 9 years because no license in this country. But I’m finally getting back in the saddle. Coping tips? [more inside]

Biking the Greenbrier River Trail

I'd like to bicycle the Greenbrier River Trail, a state park in West Virginia, and most of the information I can find about it is sparse, outdated, or covers only small sections of the 77-mile trail. I'm looking for advice from people who have done the whole trail recently. [more inside]

Buying a car: explain negotiating price to me

My lease is almost up, and I need to buy a car. Aside from the lease, every previous car I've owned has been purchased or inherited from someone I knew. I know people negotiate at dealers, but I don't understand how it works. At all. And I'm not finding that in previous questions. [more inside]

Source of quote on packing light?

I'm trying to track down the source of a quote I heard once about packing light for travel, something along the lines of "Never bring more than you can carry at a flat-out run for a quarter mile." I thought it was from Mark Twain (of course), but I'm having trouble verifying that--or any source.

How does a digital nomad make friends?

I have the opportunity to work remotely from South America. I'm afraid that I'll try the digital nomad life and end up just spending all of my time alone in a hotel room. How can I plan ahead to find community in a foreign place? [more inside]

Best ride out of LAX?

Next weekend, I need to get from LAX to a private residence in Canoga Park, and later for my return to LAX I'll be coming from a hotel in Thousand Oaks. What's the best ratio of low price + low hassle to do this? Can anyone recommend a particular shuttle? Rideshare? Etc. [more inside]

Cheap Getaway Within Italy

I found a cheap fare to Rome at Easter and booked an overlong 13 day trip. Even cheap AirBnbs add up (yikes)...and I'm too fussy for bunk beds in youth hostels. I'll mostly be in Rome/Naples. Where can I go via train for 4 days to save a few bucks where lodgings/eats are less expensive? Just want to chill and blend in (i.e. more digital nomadism than tourism). [more inside]

Cheap Flight Price Tracking and Alerts (2019 edition)

I want ongoing tracking of cheap flights from MSP to Boston, Toronto. Modern approaches to find cheap flights to (wherever is cheap). I am totally flexible on dates, in general, and want to go places whenever flights are cheap! I tried Skyscanner and Delta's email list, and getting very little that is useful.

To disturb or not to disturb, that is the question

When I stay at a hotel for multiple days, I often leave the "do not disturb" (or "no moleste" for tig fans) card on my door all day. I figure that it gives the cleaning team a break. But do they get paid per room? Would it be better to have them clean my already reasonably clean room so they can get paid for it?

Neighbourhood suggestions for a week plus in Paris

Paris is such a big city that I'm at a loss for picking a neighbourhood to stay in next month. Neighborhood descriptions tend to be things like "this place is full of tourists" or "this is where the 20 years olds go drinking" but not "hey 39 year old who's into craft beer and vintage video games, you should stay here." So where should we stay? [more inside]

Help me experience European football

I have a trip to the Netherlands and Belgium coming up in September, and I just discovered that both countries have European qualifier matches while I’m there. I haven’t been able to find out where the games are going to be played, but I’m hoping to find a fun way to watch them with some natives while I’m there — or, even better, attend a game.
