How can I improve my academic essay writing?
I am a fourth-year undergrad studying Sociology and Political Science and I keep receiving B's on my academic essays because my grammar, style, and writing sentences are choppy and not concise. My papers do not flow well and my ideas and arguments get buried because of this. [more inside]

Help me find an essay about the Trump administration from last year
I'm trying to find an essay or a magazine article about the Trump administration and the Republican party from at least a year ago and my google-fu is completely failing me. Unfortunately, I don't remember the author or what publication it was in. Two things stood out for me about the essay.
First, it featured a very vivid biological metaphor about some sort of insect or virus that did not just kill its victim, but completely transforms its still-alive host in a particularly cruel way. [more inside]
ISO funny piece of writing about conversing while looking after toddler
I'm looking for a funny thing I read online a while back - it was written as a dialogue of a parent trying to have adult conversations with a friend while looking after a toddler. I believe I read it about 6 months ago. Can't find it anywhere...searching for "conversations with toddler" and various permutations obviously throws up a lot of not-it. Does anyone remember? What is the point of a bibliography if I use endnotes?
If, for instance, I am citing a book and I have the page number, author, title, publisher, year, etc. in the endnote, what is the purpose of a bibliography? All the information contained in the bibliography would already be in the endnotes. Is the information supposed to be written twice, if so why?

Where (and how!) to pitch a semi-personal essay?
I wrote a timely semi-personal essay about abortion and rape culture in response to Katha Pollitt's call for pro-choice women to speak out in the NY Times a couple days ago. I'd like to pitch it to a handful of feminist-friendly websites--think Jezebel, The Atlantic, The Guardian's US Comment is Free, etc, although I'm absolutely punching above my weight with those particular examples, and I'd like some advice on where and how to pitch it. Speech recognition software recs for sprawly writing on a Mac
Typing is killing me and I have to write a bunch of papers over the next couple of weeks. I have a 2012 MBP (not yet on Mavericks) and could spend ~ $100-150 on some kind of voice-to-text software. Looking for something with a minimal learning curve that will let me work fast. And, whatever else is required to quickly & painlessly navigate multiple documents. Any recommendations? [more inside]
Examples of essay/articles without a character or main person
Hello,
I'm looking for examples of good essays/articles/long form journalism (2000-5000 words) that aren't told through profiling a person or based on the author's experience somewhere. I received advice that you don't pitch an idea or a subject, but a character, and I've stuck to that, but I'd like to try a few shorter articles and essays that don't depend on framing it around a person or a trip somewhere (my essays that hang off a person's story take over a year to get the material because I follow the person's journey).
I hope that makes sense.

Tell me about an essay that flows really well.
Hello! I am teaching a writing class, and am now teaching students about flow.
I would like to do an exercise where I take an essay (preferably, somewhat academic) and cut it up and give it to them to rearrange to show how well the author transitions between paragraphs.
The problem is, I can't find one that works in particular! If anyone has a good example, I'd be grateful.
Philosophy reading reccomendations on "Notion of freedom and humanity"
A friend of mine recently quit his job and has found himself with a lot of free time. As a method to explore his mind and world he has set himself a task to write an essay on : -
"The Notion of Freedom and Humanity"
I am no philosophy veteran but I am sure that there must be some great texts already dealing with this subject.
What research and reading material can I recommend my friend for his essay?
help a textbook taught me something relevant and amusing once
I'm looking for an essay I read in a textbook. This would've been in the late 90s and it was a middle school Literature textbook. The essay was about writing. I remember that it included a bit about how you can't ask writers about writing for the same reason you can't ask the sea about itself (it will just gurgle at you). It also had a bit about breaking the rules when writing, talking about how writing guides tell you never to open a story with dialogue but then gave an example of a classic novel that opened with dialogue in French. How tCan I create a "Tap Essay" app (without programming...too much)
How can I create a "tap essay" app (such as Robin Sloan's Fish without learning Objective C? I'm a poet, not a programmer!
The idea is pretty simple: an app that shows styled text on a page that you tap to go to the next page with the occasional option to tweet the current line, etc.

The mimetic and narrative capacities of artefacts
I am interested in the mimetic and narrative capacities of artefacts, how cultural remnants transmit information through time and how meaning is translated once an artefact is re-appropriated or examined from a new perspective. I have several avenues of study at the moment (a list in extended explanation), but would like some more ideas. Areas of critical theory, linguistics, evolutionary psychology and poetics are all relevant. [more inside]
Looking for an alternative to Nerve Magazine
I am looking for a magazine that would be interested in a story I've written about being in love without sexual attraction. Nerve is the only magazine that I can think of, but from the looks of things, I doubt they accept anything from writers outside of sunny California.
My story isn't sexual explicit, but I don't think a mainstream/family-friendly publication would be interested in this.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a Nerve-esque magazine (or zine) that accepts non-fiction that isn't supposed to make you horny?
Looking for tools to help me get out of the endless reading trap
