Sewing a safe DIY cape for kids?

My nieces are obsessed with The Princess In Black and I want to make them capes so they can fight monsters to their hearts' content. However I'm paranoid about safety and can't find a clear answer online. Parents/family members of kids who play with capes, what is the safest children's cape fastener? Velcro? Magnet? Is there any other safety aspect I should know about? Bonus points if you have a specific pattern to recommend!

Halloween costumes with LEDs?

I've recently gotten into sewing, and I really want to sew a Halloween costume this year with LED lights! But the only think I've thought of so far is a jellyfish. I'll do that if I can't think of anything else... but I thought I'd ask for some suggestions. I would prefer to be an object, animal, place or concept over a person. Any ideas?

Aunt Former Costume Designer strikes again

My niece and nephew want me to make them Totoro costumes for Halloween. Yay! I found some gray and white French terry fabric on sale in the flat folds section last week. Yay! I'm increasingly dissatisfied with the white one and want it to be more like the gray one. Boo! Can you help me match this specific type of French terry? [more inside]

Tied up in knots/ascots/cravats/puff ties/whatevs...

I am an intermediate sewist and I have been tasked with sewing a men's Victorian-style puff tie. I am loathe to spend money on a pattern if I could actually make my own pattern. Is a puff tie the same item as a cravat? I am seeing some stuff like this but it doesn't look authentic (not to mention it looks like more trouble to sew than it's worth). Any guidance would be most appreciated!

Help me find the name for my new favorite pants

What are these pants (on the girl) called, so that I can I find them/a pattern for them? From the Bollywood routine on So You Think You Can Dance last night. The slit and the billoweyness when she spins are the key aspects of why I love these.
