What do I need to know about sewing stretchy fabrics 101
Sewers, (I mean seamstresses, not pootubes), I have lost weight due to thyroid meds and I'm thinking about doing stuff with my many t-shirts that now expose great expanses of my bra. But I have in my mind that one needs an overlocker to sew stretchy fabric, and I don't think I'm ready to buy something that I have to find storage for, that I might use once a year. [more inside]
Restoring Silk Binding on Old-School Blanket
It's hard to find old school fluffy blankets with silk bindings, so I guess I ought to renovate my old one (the binding is getting a bit torn up). First, where can I go to have it sewn? (dress shops near me are super expensive). Second, the current binding is 3" wide, but it looks like they only sell 2" these days. Any ideas re: finding a wider one?

Help: Sewing Pattern for Specific Jumper?
I saw this overall jumpsuit (or jumper?) and I desperately wish to recreate it, as closely as possible. I realize it's pants with added suspenders (all in chambray/denim) but I love the fit and flare of the bottoms. If anyone could lend advice or point me in a direction, that would be wonderful! Why is my sewing machine pulling loops underneath the fabric?
I've read up on how the top and bottom tensioning is supposed to work, but it hasn't helped. I've got the bobbin adjusted so it lets out about an inch when I bounce it by the thread. Adjusting the top tension from there doesn't seem to make much difference. I always get the loops. The weird thing is that the top thread seems really hard to pull out when I do it by hand. It's so hard that's it sometimes breaks. Why should tension that seems stiff to the hand pull through when the machine sews? [more inside]
What's another word for "customizable region?"
I'm looking for a word that represents the defining region upon which insignia is attached on clothing. Contrived example, I have a military coat. On the coat, per regulation, I am allowed to sew a badge on the upper left shoulder and the lower left shoulder. I've been using 'region' or 'customizable region' to refer to the target areas for attachment, but it seems like there should be a better, less overloaded word. Any ideas?

What's the best sewing reference book?
I would like to buy a good book on how to sew. I don't mean a beginner's instructional book, since I can already sew quite well, but a comprehensive reference book that covers everything from the basics to advanced tailoring and couture techniques. I want a sewing book that is the equivalent of Vogue Knitting, which is revered among knitters as the knitter's Bible. I've come across Vogue Sewing, and Power Sewing by Sandra Betzina. Would you recommend either one of these as the best choice, or do you know of another book you think is better?

Is there a community web site for sewers that is comparable to what Ravelry is for knitters? This means, in case you're not familiar with Ravelry, that I can use it to document my sewing projects, look at other people's sewing projects, search for patterns (or pattern reviews), and share information with other sewers in the forums.
What kind of elastic will do the job?
AskMe sewers! That's as in ("sewing," not as in sewage). I found a piece of fabric I'd like to make a simple tube-style dress out of, sewing in a back seam to join the fabric and then sewing in elastic above the bust. I have two kinds of elastic on hand. Should I use the flat 3/4 inch specifically "non-roll" kind, which seems kind of wide and bulky, or the flat 3/8" braided one? [more inside]

Sewingfilter: loops on bottom of fabric
When using my sewing machine, large loops and tangles of thread are generated on the bottom side of the fabric. What am I doing wrong and what do I need to do to remedy the problem?
