Job just outside London - where to live for happy social life?

I'll be moving to the London area soon to start a new job. The job is based in Watford. I'm fairly young (think late 20s to early 30s), and I'd like to get involved with social things, meet interesting people, and (most importantly) meet people I'd like to date. I think most of this stuff would happen in more central parts of London. So I don't know whether it would make more sense to live close to work or somewhere a bit more central (not right in the middle, as I'll be earning 25k). [more inside]

Renting. It's freaking me out a little.

After years living in flatshares, MrMippy and I are moving in together. That part's fine - it's dealing with estate agencies and huge sums of cash that scares me. Help me calm down about it so I can think about how to furnish our flat in peace! (We are in London.) [more inside]

Where should I even be LOOKING?

Trying to rent a room in (South East) London. As we all know, renting in this city is a sweat, a nightmare, and a racket. But my question is pretty specific - what sites do you use other than Spareroom and Gumtree? Thanks.

Can I negotiate rental agency tenant-changeover fees?

I live in London in a flat of three, and someone wants to move out. We have someone else ready to move in. The lettings agency wish to charge £150 for swapping a person over, and £100 for admin fees. Can we dispute this, for a more reasonable fee? [more inside]

renting a cell phone in London

I live in the U.S. and want to rent a cell phone in London next month (for a week.) After spending time trying to nail down a company there - I got nothing, except for Sprint and they seem kind of pricey. Can anyone recommend a good cell phone rental? (or warn me of ones to stay away from?) thank you
