A Janome JD 1818 sewing machine has appeared at a local thrift shop for $40. I know Janome in general is decent but I can’t find anything on this model w quick phone searching. I know it will be old and basic. Beyond that would this be a reasonable starting machine and is this a reasonable price? Will I be able to get accessories and parts for it as needed?

We took our second hand, old Husqvarna Viking 2000 for a servicing...turns out the thing is in desperate need of a full overhaul, which starts at $250 (and could be more, if things look bad in there). The woman at the shop (a well reviewed place in Toronto) mentioned another option would simply be to buy a new all metal Janome, around the same price. I’m not a serious sewer, just hemming and repairs, tapering jeans. What would you advise?

I can't find info online regarding actual motor strength of particular machines. When comparison shopping, it's a little maddening! Help me understand how to find and interpret this information, so I don't tear my hair out! [more inside]

New Sewing Machine Question! I got a new sewing machine for Christmas, a Janome Magnolia 7318, and I love it. My only snag so far is how to sew thick fabrics. I want to sew thick fleeces for stuff for my dogs and the layers are too thick to fit under the stock foot. Is there a different shank I can buy (not sure if that is the right word) that is higher? I tried to google it but no luck.
