Best way to buy a framed print of a professional photographer's photo?
As a gift, I want to send someone a framed or matted print of a particular photo by a professional photographer. The photographer just died and doesn't seem to have an official web site. What's the best way to do this, making sure his estate gets the proper royalties? [more inside]
Everyone loves a fire...?
Several local fire departments around here (Boston area) seem to have professional photographers (or at least relatively competent amateurs in the department) who take photos of incident responses, new hardware, and general "slice of life" stuff and put them on Twitter using the official FD account. Is there any history behind this? Is it widespread? [more inside]
Paris street photography in 1800s.. illegal?
In the street photography book "Bystander" there is a passing reference to a ban on street/public photography in Paris in the 1800s, resulting in a relative gap of work between Nègre and Atget.. having difficulty finding more info about this law. Any insight?

Latin American Photobooks of History
I have a few excellent photo art books of Latin America, Destino Final by Giancarlo Ceraudo and Miriam Lewin (about the military junta in Argentina) and Joao Pina's Condor (about Operation Condor). I have a number of great photo books about Latin America, but the quality of these two are a step above. What else is there out there, specifically about Latin American and the Caribbean history? Was my great-grandfather a cross-dresser?
My brother recently showed me some old family photos that show my great-grandfather wearing a dress. My question is: was this a light-hearted thing to do in the times or was my great-grandfather a cross-dresser? [more inside]

Inheritance Tax on estimated value of photo negatives left behind? WUTT?
An acquaintance's brother-in-law, a retired photojournalist (Newsweek, Time), has left specific instructions to destroy his negatives after his death so his family won't be hit by US inheritance taxes on the estimated market value of the collection. He sells through Getty and Polaris so
this is a valid financial threat (he believes).
Kinda sad, I think. He did a close up and personal pictorial project with a young Bob Dylan living in New York, and these rare shots would be destroyed, along with... [more inside]
Visual references for armor?
I'm looking for visual references for medieval / faux-medieval armor. Bonus points for something lightweight / leather and I'm really looking for rear views but anything would be useful. I've tried a bit of googling but haven't really found what I want.
Books on the history of photography?
I only really have time to read a single book on the origins of photography. What do you recommend? Think Daguerre and Talbot, no need for hundreds of pages devoted to the camera obscura. I'd also prefer something heavier on text than actual photographs.

Historical ephemera... worth keeping?!
I'm cleaning out my storage, and wanted to find out whether two objects are worth keeping / selling: A nautical insurance policy from Sept. 21, 1802 (front, back), and a B&W photograph, on a 14"x20" piece of Kodak paper, of Mt. Saint Helens erupting, photographer unknown (photo). More details inside. [more inside]

Is the woman in the picture Queen Victoria?
Blogger Steerforth of The Age of Uncertainty found an old picture which intrigued him, especially the figure in the center. He wonders in his blogpost if it might be Queen Victoria. Some commenters dissent. I'm curious about it myself. Can anyone shed further light on the image? [more inside]

Where to find copyright free historical images?
What are the best searchable sources for copyright-free historical and other images? I know about Wikimedia Commons, about searching for Creative Commons licensed material on Flickr, and about some regional repositories such as the Washington State Digital Archives (where I work). What other good sources are out there? Google searches lead me to subscription databases of stock photos.
