Morning reports for 513th PIR, 334th Infantry, or 432nd AAA?
Does anyone know of a source forWWII morning reports, other than going to the National Archives in Suitland, MD? I am looking for:
- 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1945 before April
- Company K (King) of the 334th Infantry, 84th Division, any time
- 42nd Coast ArtilleryBattalion, later the 432nd antiaircraft artillery (AAA), any time
Also, rosters to further narrow down their assignments (ie., company or even platoon) would be very valuable.
SO MANY THANKS. [more inside]
Jeremiah Denton blinked Morse Code as a POW. Who figured that out?
Jeremiah Denton was an American POW in Vietnam. When interviewed for a propaganda video by the North Vietnamese, Denton provided confirmation of conditions by blinking "T-O-R-T-U-R-E" in Morse code while feigning light sensitivity. How did American intelligence know he was blinking Morse code? [more inside]
A team of soldiers who stopped a war?
What large-scale conflicts of the past 50 years have ended as a result of a single, small-scale military operation? Any country, any government -- it just needs to be Vietnam era or later. Please give details and be as specific as possible for this military history n00b. Thanks!
VFW technical question
The VFW was established in 1913 and had overlap with living Civil War vets. Cursory googling doesn't turn this up, but could Civil War veterans join the VFW?
German Military Industrial Resources During WWII

Why was the US Army base Fort Worden named after a Navy Rear Admiral?
Fort Worden is apparently the only US Army base to ever be named after a Navy officer, one John Lorimer Worden, commander of the Monitor in the US Civil War. The reasons why are possibly lost to history. Any military history buffs out there who might possibly know why? [more inside]

Questions about the 1970s phase of the Vietnam War
My knowledge of the Vietnam War is not as complete as I would like it to be. My own internal representation of its 1960s period is fairly strong but it fades a little at the 1970s/Vietnamization phase of the war. So I'm posing the following questions: [more inside]
Why did the Soviet military retain the traditional Officer/Enlisted class binary rather than instituting some other hierarchichal structure?
Russian History: Why did the Soviet military retain the traditional (western) Officer/Enlisted class binary rather than instituting some other hierarchichal structure? How did they ideologically justify maintaining two distinct and separate classes, one subordinate to the other, in an army putatively fighting for a classless society? [more inside]
How do soldiers in wartime talk about death?
I'm looking for quantitative studies or other accounts of how often, and in what ways, soldiers in dangerous wartime situations discuss the possibility of death. [more inside]

What Are Some Great Movies About War?
We're watching Gettysburg, which is a great education in the Civil War for our 15-year-old son. What are other great movies about battles and war?
Narrative histories of war
I enjoyed Rick Atkinson's Liberation Trilogy on WWII (so far) and Shelby Foote's Civil War: A Narrative. What are similar narrative retellings for other wars? I'm particularly interested in something like this for the Napoleonic wars.
Scholarly military history introduction/books/journals
Military history looks like a field where jokers abound. All sorts of people make various claims, and it seems that many of them don't know what they're talking about. How do I, a layperson, get the tools to evaluate claims about military history? [more inside]

What hurdles did you encounter in trying to get a personnel file on someone "famous"?
Have you ordered a US military personnel file (aka "OMPF," or "201 file"), for someone famous that was "released" under the Persons of Exceptional Prominence (PEP) program? How did that go? How long did it take? Did you have to go there in person? [more inside]

Help finding photos of Royal Navy ships
When I was a kid, my dad had framed photos of the ships he'd served on during his time in the Royal Navy. Both he and the photos are long gone, but I've decided I'd like to put something similar together.
First problem is getting hold of his service history - I've only got a vague idea of the time he served (he was involved in Korea and Suez I think). Second is getting the photos.
Any ideas on either?
