Looking for podcasts that discuss horror/thriller films

I'm really digging The Scaredy Cats Horror Show, and would love to know if there are other similar podcasts out there. The main draw is having a few hosts with great chemistry who discuss a film they've recently watched, focusing a bit on their reactions, a bit on general film/genre theory, a bit on specific trivia... I mean basically The Scaredy Cats Horror Show but more. MORE. [more inside]

Thrillers or crime novels with characters that come alive

I like novels written in first-person point of view, think Raymond Chandler's Marlowe, but less chauvinist and dated. Good characterization and an eye for detail is paramount - unfortunately, that excludes lots of contemporary thrillers and crime novels. Authors I like: Jonathan Kellerman, Ben Aaronovitch, Jonathan Gash, John Burdett, Tyler Dilts. Please help: What else might I like? [more inside]

Recommend some writers like Shirley Jackson and Poe?

Greetings. I am trying to find some novelists, short story writers, and poets that write speculative fiction, horror, thriller, and Gothic genre? Like the film The Innocents (1961) or Night of The Hunter (1955) but in writing. Maybe even Victorian-esque works too. I am a devoted Hitchcock fan as well -- but I am keen on trying to find some page-turner speculative fiction with short stories, novels, and poetry. Thank-you.

Not-quite-Nordic not-necessarily-Noir?

The TV show Fargo is great. I really enjoy it. But aside from the great storytelling and filmmaking skill, I realized it ticks some boxes that I want more of: 1) crime 2) in flyover country 3) during the winter Can you suggest books, movies, or TV shows that meet these criteria?

Fiction combining suspense/thrill/plot with humor

I am interested in books that manage to combine a successful plot-driven approach (particularly thrillers or other airport-style reading, like Crichton or Dan Brown) with humor, either in the form of characters, dialogue, or narration. When has it been done successfully? When has it been attempted unsuccessfully? Are they like oil and water, and if so, why? [more inside]

Can you identify this peculiar genealogical thriller?

Some time in the mid-to-late '80s, I borrowed a book from my local public library (in the UK). I recall neither its title nor the author's name, but I think it may nevertheless be uniquely identifiable from those details of its plot I can remember. Its protagonist is a genealogist, who is hired to discreetly research the family background of a US presidential candidate. There is an element of cat-&-mouse as unknown individuals try to put a stop to his researches, but he perseveres... [more inside]

Exciting unpredictable thrillers with intelligent characters?

I just finished Gone Girl the other day and am looking for similar reads. Without spoiling anything this book features intelligent and unpredictable characters with twisty plotting, including a significant script flip halfway through. Would love similar page turners that keep you guessing without being too formulaic or lowest common denominator!

Bring me to the edge of my seat, and then push me over!

What's the most exciting novel you've ever read? I mean this in the simplest sense: an exciting plot. I'm looking for page-turners. Novels that keep you on the edge of your seat and refuse to let you sleep until you finish them. I'm looking for genre novels -- but I don't care what genres: Mystery, thriller, sci-fi, etc. (though sci-fi/fantasy has been done-to-death here, so I'm really more interested in other genres.) Oh, I care about words. So no matter how exciting, I'll quit reading if the prose is crappy. [more inside]
