What's the closest thing to my dream laptop?
I'm currently using a 2014 Lenovo X1 Carbon, and I'm looking for an upgrade on display and style. My dream laptop: <3 lbs.; 12-14"; powerful enough for browsing, streaming, & Zoom; has a great display, good camera, and decent battery life; runs Linux with no issues; has a trackpoint (without or with a trackpad); and has an attractive aluminum case that does not have an apple on it. I don't think that exists, so what's the closest thing? I'm willing to compromise on just about anything but the size/weight and the apple. [more inside]
If only computer parts weren't so expensive....
So I've enjoyed building computers as a hobby for years now. I enjoy putting the components together, reading comparison tests, looking at spec sheets and comparing prices, all that stuff. The problem is that I can't do it as often as I'd like because its too expensive! I need a hobby that's like building computer but is a lot cheaper. [more inside]

Keeping sensitive electronics cool in a car
I'm selling almost everything I own so I can fit everything that's left into my car and travel for a while. The inside of my car can get volcanically hot at times, and I'm worried about storing my MacBook and iPad there. What can I do to keep them as cool as possible? Buy a cooler they'll fit in? Do I need to worry about condensation in that case? Any ideas would be very welcome -- thanks!
What computer do I want?

Tablet piano instruction?
I have an electric, piano-weighted keyboard that I want to learn how to play. I can't afford lessons right now. It has MIDI in and out connectors. Is there a hardware/software combo that will take that MIDI out connection, plug it into an Android or iOS tablet, and provide a more interactive teaching experience? [more inside]

Techie Birthday Present
My wife's birthday is coming up in early September and I need help finding a birthday present Fast as I'm going to be tied up the next couple weeks. She likes "toys" like remote control cars, helicopters, preferably that she can build herself. I got her a helicopter last year and a remote controlled car kit already so those ideas are out. She has a basic arduino kit and is always looking for a new project. She also likes cool gadgets for cooking, grilling. And she's into all kinds of music. She has an iPod, iPad, a Mac, a PC (several, actually). I'd like to keep it under $150 if possible. Your ideas would be most appreciated!

Can you help me decide between (used) PDA's, Smartphones, Pocket PCs and the year 2008?
Can you help me decide between PDA's, Smartphones, Pocket PCs and the year 2008? I am looking most specifically for info on the Sony Clie PEG NX70V ... IPAQ 4350 ... and IPAQ 2215. But advice on any of this would be immensely helpful! I did search AskMeFi, but found only info for new equipment or old posts. I'm talking used equipment instead, older but able to keep up with current software stuff. (More inside) [more inside]

Does a UPS/surge protector need to be turned on to protect your gear?
I got into a debate the other day with my boss, who is absolutely anal-retentive about everything power related (to the point where he scolds me for leaving fluorescent lights turned on if I'm not using the room).

Why the size limit on LCD tvs?
This one has been bugging me for a while. Why can I spend around $300 and easily find LCD computer monitors that can handle 1280x1024 resolution, but even if you spend thousands upon thousands on a LCD Television, you can only get 1280x768 max resolution? The 768 vertical pixel limit seems to make 1080i HDTV impossible on these new TVs, only allowing 720 and 480. Why the discrepancy?
How do I reduce static electricity in my house?
Carpets in new home are producing tremendous amounts of static and lots of sparks. What are good solutions to reduce the static to protect computers and other electronic equipment? Ideally, the solution would reduce the static across the entire house, as trying to protect each piece of equipment with an anti-static mat or some such would quickly become cost prohibitive.
