What is … ?
I'm guessing some odd Unicode character. But I'm on mobile and can't 'view source' or otherwise investigate. Might just be me and my phone. But I keep seeing it and it's driving me batshit. [more inside]
Is Mario the most diverse gaming character/IP?
What are some other video game examples of characters/IP that have as much variety as Mario. Examples: Mario in outer space (Super Mario Galaxy), Mario as a sticker or piece of paper (Super Mario Paper series), Mario as an athlete (Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Baseball), Mario as a driver (Mario Kart), Mario as a fighter (Super Smash Bros.), Mario as a puzzle (Dr. Mario, Picross), Mario as education (Paint, Mario Teaches Typing) etc. The Zelda franchise is another character/IP that fits this mold. But I am wanting others, thinking in terms of genre, gameplay, occupation, location, etc.
What character can relate to both luxury and poverty at the same time?
Much in the same way a folkloric court jester combined wisdom and folly. Is there an iconic character (folklore, mythology, or world history) who could typically walked with kings and commoners alike?
Extraordinary portrayals of positive traits, actors or real people?
Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman hits a particular wholehearted, heartfelt, invincible sort of emotive self-confidence right out of the park. And, I don't know, George Clooney does a particular smooth, charming self-confidence, in real life and on the screen. What are other fictional characters or real people who very clearly exemplify particular characteristics or traits? (And what is the trait?) [more inside]

Name that book, family history edition
According to family lore, my great-great-grandmother named her son after a character in a book that she liked. This literary character's name was passed down from my great-grandfather to my grandfather to my father and partially to me.
The title of the book is a mystery. Can you tell me anything about a book written before 1891 that includes a character named Percy Winfield? [more inside]

What are the rah-rah characters of mainstream American media?
I'm looking for examples of super-sweet peppy characters in mainstream fiction/movies/TV. Like, Glinda the Good Witch floating in on a bubble, but even cheerier. Super-chipper, "always look on the bright side" types. Overly optimistic. Someone who says "Yay!" unironically. Can you think of some character examples like that?

(Translation) How to count Japanese source characters in a PDF?
New-ish translator here! I am attempting to count the source characters in a Japanese PDF, in order to come up with an estimate for a new job. I have employed a variety of different methods and programs (Word, CountAnything, JCount, MemoQ, etc.) and have even tried converting it into different formats like PPT/Word, yet the count discrepancy is significantly high for some reason. I am assuming that this is due to some rookie mistake of mine - what could I be doing wrong? [more inside]
Please recommend powerful plays featuring strong mature women.
I've been given the opportunity to basically name the play I want to be in. I'm 50 (and I look my age, whatever that means) and the director has asked whether I have any preferences. It's been ages since I've read any contemporary scripts. I can't do sexy or flirty particularly well (in real life or on stage). What would you recommend? Any genre is fine and it can be either a one-act or full play.

What Would Jorah (Mormont) Say?
I am considering going out on Halloween as Ser Jorah Mormont (of Game of Thrones). Part of the appeal is a little bit of character acting.
What would Ser Jorah say, after squinting wistfully into the distance, if he misheard what his companion said in a noisy bar and instead responded about: his unrequited mistress, the wars of years past, the habits of Dothraki hordes, etc? [more inside]

From Ian Thomson's Introduction
Ian Thomson says in the introduction of The Third Man by Greene that Lime, with his alley rat amorality, is a familiar Greene character. What does this "alley rat amorality" mean? And he also writes that Greene's literary interest was not just in shabby crooks and other compromised characters;he wanted to dissect their morally ambivalent worlds. Will you explain what "compromised characters" are? Thank you!

Acting an Old Woman character without resorting to cliché?
I have an audition for a fascinating role in a comic opera - a feisty soubrette who's magically aged to 75 while pretending to be that age. How do I play a much older character without resorting to stereotypes - or a whispery reedy voice, since it's still an opera? [more inside]

The Anti-Paranoid Protagonist vs. the Accumulating Coincidences?
There's a particular device or pattern or plot-type that I *think* might be an actual thing, but I'm not sure. It involves a character who *ends up* entangled in Deep Weirdness of some sort, after experiencing a series of seemingly mundane coincidences, but who never really becomes paranoid about the coincidences and only starts to believe Something Is Up when things get *really* weird. I'd love to read more stories about characters like this. [more inside]
How should a person be?
Describe a person that you met who made you go "I want to be like that!"

If you were learning Japanese, which radical list would you use?
I'm going to start learning Japanese in a couple of months, and in researching the language, I'm realizing that it's going to be a *lot* easier if I could recognize all the component parts of any Kanji I encounter. But..I'm noticing that there are a lot of different lists of those component parts...Heisig's lists, Wikipedia's tables of radicals, The Kanji Dictionary's 79 radicals, etc. Which radical lists do you like best, and why? Are there any out there that show you the radical, show you the characters that use it, and explain how the radical fits into those characters (meaning-wise)? [more inside]
Writing a letter of character reference.
I'm a 48 year old guy and in high school there was a group of 5 of us who were very tight.
We remained tight through college and then on into family life. Then about 15 years ago one guy drifted off with his family. We all eventually lost contact with him. Maybe a phone call one Christmas or another. [more inside]
Looking for paintings of movie characters
I'm looking for a specific series of paintings (watercolors?) depicting characters from a hodgepodge of recent popular movies - Juno, Pacific Rim, Fargo, Hot Fuzz, Monsters University, Casino Royale, among others. Low detail, no background - mainly just characters on a beige/brown background. [more inside]
Babysitter Business
My wife and I always have trouble finding a babysitter. Our friends have the same problem. This problem came up at a party last night. Our solution to the problem was a website / app that allowed parents to search for babysitters. There are plenty of services that do this already, but we all agreed that none of the services were solving the 'trust' problem. We felt that none of the existing services were local enough, e.g. tied to our local community / social circles. As a parent, what would this service need to do to put you at ease? Do the babysitters need to be vetted, and if so, how? Referrals? Reviews? Video interviews? Personality tests? What would you need to know to trust a babysitter with your kids?

Looking for examples of a literary trope translated to a visual medium
Sometimes in a novel, you will have Character A and Character B. Fast forward to the big twist that Character A and Character B ARE THE SAME PERSON!
Obviously this doesn't work when the novel is adapted for the screen, and I'm looking for examples of adaptations that had to deal with this, and how they dealt with it, and any sort of critique of how it was dealt with in the movie/television show. (Spoilers of all sorts inside) [more inside]
