Reusing Mac mini with eGPU

I came into possession of a Mac mini (2014 series) with Thunderbolt 2. Other than the graphics card, it has pretty great specs. I'd love to hook up a 5k monitor to it and play some games. I'm wondering if anyone has successfully connected an external graphics card ("eGPU") to this model of computer via a Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter?
