Feeling anxious, taking antibiotics for UTI. When can I expect relief? When should I try something else? [more inside]

I was recently diagnosed with a UTI at an urgent care clinic. The PA (I did not see an MD or NP) prescribed a ten-day course of cipro to treat it (500mg, twice a day, for 10 days). That seems excessive to me (though I will take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed). Is such a long course of antibiotics commonly prescribed for UTIs? [more inside]

I am on antibiotics for a UTI. My vulva feels itchy and uncomfortable, but it isn't swollen or red, and I have no discharge. Could this be thrush? Should I self-medicate with Canesten or wait until I can see my GP after the bank holiday weekend (Tuesday at the earliest, in reality later)? [more inside]
