All of a sudden my wife's Mac OS X account won't open on our desktop (OS 10.3.9). We put in the password but the login bar just displays the blue and white candy cane bar (it's animated). And then it just hangs. I've tried correcting permissions but it didn't help. Anyone have any suggestions short of deleting the account and starting over?

Once in a while a friend comes along with a really cool new CD. What I want to do is: Instantly Rip it to my hard disk, listen to it at the same time, and talk to my friend. What I do now instead is: Start ripping, wait until the first track is finished, then listen to the first track while ripping the others. Talking gets difficult because every now and then I have to enqueue the next track to the player.

I want burn DVD's, but I want to do it on my Mac and PC. I had an external enclosure, so I could move the drive between PC and mac easily. The proble is it wouldn't let me use my Optorite DVD drive to write DVD's on my Mac, only to read them. Where can I find a list of the DVD writers that OS X supports natively?

Is there any app or modification I can make to safari to have the form elements render in the way the page designer intended rather than with aqua UI elements? I tried to look around but couldn't find a hack for it.

Headphones, particularly those that surround the ear, make my ears uncomfortably hot. I've tried ear buds and etymotic in the ear phones, but find them uncomfortable. Are there decent headphones that sit off the ear or lightly on the ear that won't be so hot?

I use it way too much, and find that whenever I start using less then normal, my lips quickly dry out and then crack and peel up. So I lick them, which just dries them out.

What's the difference between the various frequency bands for portable phones? I wish to buy a portable phone / digital answering machine for my home (not a cellular phone), and have noticed they come in 900Mhz, 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz versions. So recently, I've started chatting with some old friends in Germany, and while I can speak fluent german, it's a real pain typing the umlauts and other special characters using the character map (the application is Yahoo Messenger). It seems like there is a diet for anything. I have heard about and seen examples of diets which consist of eating one thing. What I am wondering is, what effects there are and how effective a diet would be if a person only ate popsicles for a month or two. I'm not asking for dieting advice outside this question.

I recently upgraded to Firefox 1.0.2 (from .93) on Mac OS X (Jaguar) and whenever I quit Firefox, it doesn't fully quit. It closes all windows but remains in the menu bar, although the menus are not functional. I have to go into Process Viewer and force quit. Can't even force quit from the Dock. I thought it might have been the SessionSaver extension, but I uninstalled it and Firefix still won't quit.

Anybody have a clue what's going on at BovineUnite.com? Billboards started showing up here in the Baltimore area a week or so ago. The site is registered locally, but the execution of the site seems too good to be just some local prank. So far, the only Google reference to the site is a Craigslist ad looking for people to travel around Maryland wearing the cowsuit. What are they advertising? Skim milk? Chick-Fil-A?

I've had this argument with a friend of mine today on the United states public health services, we both disagree and i turn toward metafiler for an answer. my conception of the way it works it that if you don't have any coverage or work insurance or any way to cover for the bill you don't get treated...final ! his point was that people can allway acces "public" hospital and get treated for free, the truth must be in between our two vision, would anyone care to comment the way it works to our free health cared canadian ass ? regards, selfsck
