A Halloween Party with kids

I would love to throw a Halloween party and this year we have space to actually comfortably host more than 2 other people. And I realized I have no idea how to host a party with kids. And something tells me my old standby of copious amounts of beer, food, and music might not cut it with the under-5 crowd. [more inside]

September 11 Rituals

Is there something specific you do every September 11 to mark the anniversary, beyond reflecting on the day or talking to others about your memories? For example, do you visit a specific place or read the same piece of writing? [more inside]

Cheer up, Buttercup!

Looking for pics/links that if you were going through a really rough patch, would be a welcome distraction or mood lifter. I can't be the only one who keeps a collection of things like this. I've already exhausted my usual "I hope this picture of a hamster struggling to eat a piece of spaghetti brightens your day." stock, and need to replenish. [more inside]

GiftFilter: Looking for a gift or combination of gifts

I'm looking for some gifting inspiration for someone (male-identifying) with the following interests: 1) Classic Sci-Fi - Particularly military sci-fi (Starship Troopers is a fave) and Heinlein 2) Cooking - Asian food and baking are particular interests. I might be looking for a really nice rolling pin for serious baking but unsure how to find such a thing. Apartment is very small so nothing of size is really on the list for inclusion here. 3) Video games - Borderlands, the Division 4) Audio books [more inside]

What is this mid-80s Toyota hatchback? I love it.

Recently I saw a red Toyota hatchback of presumably 1980s vintage. I loved it and wanted to know what it was, but it didn't have a model name badge, and cursory web research hasn't helped me ID it. Here's a photo of the front, and this is the back. That's all!

Name that skull!

My sister and her family are temporarily living in an AirBNB while they wait to close on their own house. In the rental, this animal skull is displayed on the mantelpiece. What is it?

it's getting autumnal up in here

It's the start of autumn (fall), my favourite time of the year. But last year, this time almost entirely passed me by because I was really busy with work and I barely noticed the leaves changing and weather getting colder. This year I will also be really busy with work but I'm determined to make the most of this time of year. What are some autumnal activities I can do? What do you like to do when the weather is turning chillier? I have included examples of what I mean after the jump: [more inside]

What’s that smell?

I love the smell of Method “Fresh Air” laundry detergent. I’d describe it as powdery? And laundry-y? Without being perfume-y or fake, though it is definitely a soapy smell rather than a nature-y one. Are there other detergents/soaps/oils that have the same scent? Bonus: I also like there lavender and cedar scent, are there other duplicates out there? I have tried Ecover lavender and sandalwood but it smells like Nag Champa to me.

Joining a friend's "family plan" group on T-Mobile -- good idea?

I was offered by a friend to join his "family plan" and pay only $35 per month for unlimited data, which would include T-Mobile Tuesdays and free Netflix. Is this a good idea? [more inside]

Recycling paper - is it helpful to remove plastic windows from envelopes

For years I've spent time doing this and probably it's not needed; almost certainly any outfit who recycles paper encounters plastic windows in envelopes every day. But if I can make it easier/better at all I'm all about it. I put the plastic junk into my trash, which just goes to landfill, which isn't comforting either; maybe people who recycle paper also recycle the plastic junk they come across? Any insight(s) into this?

Digitizing photos: most similar questions are from several years ago. Does anyone have recommendations for services in the US to which my mom can send off a box of photos, have them digitized, perhaps uploaded to a shared drive on Google Photos or something, and the originals sent back? What's the best way to donate to Planned Parenthood?

I want to give them a few bucks each month, but should I donate directly to the national org? Or one of their state/local branches? Does it even matter? Does anyone know what the sharing percentage is from the national org?

I can't reach my damn laundry

I am short. My wash machine is a top loading one that's up on a little concrete pad. Even if I get a step stool I practically fall in it (not an exaggeration) trying to reach my wet clothes to put them in the dryer. I have seen the reach contraptions on Amazon, they don't look very sturdy nor grippy enough. I did try very long kitchen tongs like these, didn't really work well. Please hope me!

How to use a planner 101

I have never in my life maintained any kind of external planner/calendar/to do list, paper or app-based, for any length of time. I’ve held my life together, narrowly, but the last several months have been a little hectic and they’re about to get moreso. If you are a person who made the transition from holding everything in your head somehow to keeping a better system, how did you make the change? Are there specific tools you recommend? [more inside]

What is this mystery machine?

I found this machine in a vintage shop near Santa Rosa, CA, and immediately fell in love. The owner of the shop didn't know what it was either - my receipt reads "WHAT IS THIS???" I brought it home, have christened it "the portal", and am now using it as a plant stand. However, the mystery remains: WTF was it originally for??? [more inside]
