What's with all the leggings at the gym?

This is maybe a silly thing to spend a question on, but it has been plaguing me for months. Nearly all the women at my gym wear leggings to work out in. Why? What happened to shorts? [more inside]

Is there ANY way to make this dress fit? (Bridesmaid edition)

My dear friend is getting married in 3 weeks and I am a bridesmaid. She's only just sent me the dress she wants me to wear - and it doesn't fit! Plus it's too small rather than too big, so no easy way to just take up some of the extra fabric. Is there any way to salvage this in time for the wedding? [more inside]

Seeking curly hair stylist in Ashland/Medford area

I recently moved to Ashland, OR and need to find a stylist who knows how to cut curly hair, and who can do styles that are just a bit edgy. My hair is fine and thin with soft curls. I'd like someone who knows how to give a dry cut - and I do NOT mean straightened and dried (which just happened, so brutal)! Someone who knows how to cut on the bias of the curls to enhance them. Preferably at a salon where they use natural hair products. Thank you!

Is this something a standard seamstress could do or an etsy shop?

I need to find a service that will take an existing garment (in this case a simple light suede jacket) and recreate it. I don't have a pattern for the garment so I assume I would need to send the garment in to the service and let them cut it apart to use it as a pattern? Can anyone recommend a service or etsy merchant or mail order seamstress who could do this? Pics of the garment inside with a kitty tax pic thrown in as bonus of our cat, Mandu. :) [more inside]

Is this a credible description of a woman's attire?

Are there any major sartorial problems with this description? One friend tells me, for instance, that pencil skirts don't have pleats or loops for belts, while another friend insists they can, though it's not common. "She’d set out everything she’d wear for the interview the night before: her beige, pleated pencil skirt with the braided belt, her gray tights and matching blouse, the long beige cardigan she’d bought just for the interview[...]"

Need Advice On Dressing For A Job Interview

I have started job hunting for the first time in nearly a decade and have just been called in for an interview to an office that I know will have a very different culture from what I've been working in. Tips for dressing appropriately desperately needed as it's been a long time since I've paid attention to fashion. Details under the fold. [more inside]

How much should I worry about a snap closure for a bag/purse?

I am looking for a largish bag that can be carried as a shoulder bag (at my waist/hips, not next to my chest) or as a cross-body. I've found one I like but it has a snap closure, visible for example in the 4th and 5th pictures here. [more inside]

Buying the right boots

I decided to invest in a quality pair of boots, but the ones I got seem a little narrow. When I wear wider boots, they feel too wide. Is it better to be too narrow or too wide? [more inside]

NYC Filter: Where can I buy strap-type craft supplies?

I am trying to make some carrying straps and I am looking to explore a range of material options in person in NYC. I'm looking for like... seat belt kind of stuff but thinner, shoestring-like material, and like... fabric in thin strips? Also maybe stuff like buckles and clips and whatnot... I am not so much looking for ribbon. Any stores come to mind?

Can you help find this Chinese sun hat?

I bought this sun hat in Chinatown in Los Angeles a few years ago. It's a little worn and I want to get another one but can't find it online. It has a tag that says "100% paper"-nothing else- and was around $10. The longest part of the brim is about 6.5 inches. I got this one but the brim is too short at 5.5 in. Thank you!

Soft bralettes with no elastic around the band

Target was selling some really sweet bralettes awhile back but don't have them anymore (it was pink with black polkadots), so I was wondering where else I can find them. What I liked was that the band was soft, stretchy fabric (not lace, scratchy) and not an elastic band or like an elastic band covered in fabric. The straps/cups were the same fabric and also not elastic bands. Feeling like I have rubber bands all around my torso is something I don't want to do anymore. [more inside]

When did "hippie" end and "punk" begin?

I'm 61 and work with a 63-year-old colleague whom I'll call J. We had a recent argument about culture and I wonder how I can prove to him I am right, since this is not a simple matter of looking up facts. (This really is not just chatfilter, as I'm seeking movies, video or even still photos that might back up my position.) [more inside]

why is it so hard to find a good wool cardigan?

I LOVE the Jackie cardigan in wool from J. Crew and have several colors, but they're getting a little old and J. Crew doesn't seem to make it any longer. Where do you find your good, basic wool cardigans?

do you recognize this clothing brand label?

I found a dress I LOVED in a thrift store a while back, but alas, it was the wrong size. The label shows a tri-color rainbow (pale green, light blue, bright pink) and doesn't have any words on it and I haven't had luck with any search terms. Do you know who made this dress? Pic link below the cut. [more inside]

Okay- I’ve had enough- I want a pixie haircut now. So do it. Thank you.

On Friday, for like, the 8000th time in the last 5 years I went in for a haircut and described what I wanted and walked out with something I didn’t want. This time, I showed her a few pictures of some short cuts I liked (all veering towards pixie) and I walked out with a bob. Like the girl in “Amelie”... on Friday I am going back again. How do i get what I want? [more inside]

What is the general wisdom on choosing wedding jewelry?

How does one choose wedding jewelry? Assume there is no sentimental option in play (e.g. grandmother's earrings). The bride will wear a formal ballgown that some might consider somewhat high cut and plainly adorned (lace on the dress but no sparkle/beading). The wedding will take place in a church and the vibe is classic and traditional. [more inside]
