I've been tasked with making a short list of engagement rings, which is very exciting, but incredibly daunting because I've never thought about an engagement ring before. After looking through Etsy and Pinterest, I've settled on some Art Deco rings that I like a lot; my problem is that the price range swings from a little less than $1000 to $2500. My boyfriend and I will be financing most of our wedding on our own and to me, spending money on a ring isn't the best use of our savings. How did you make a decision on an engagement ring? Did you regret the choice you made? Are there other factors I should consider when choosing a ring?
Women: Have you shaved / buzzed your head? Are you glad you did it? If you have grown out your hair since, was the growing out period worth it? [more inside]
I just got an invitation to my favorite kind of wedding - two very lovely people who belong together having a fancy costume party. There is an added theme of "birds/space." They have left it open as to whether costumes should involve just birds, just space, or both. This couple never half-asses anything, and I'd like to have a costume worthy of the event. [more inside]
My hair used to be sleek and shiny and like wouldn't knot ever, like a hair commercial. I could tie my hair in a literal knot and it was just go NOPE and slide apart. BUT for the past year and a half ish it's gotten more and more disagreeable. It's tangly, what my stylist calls "sticky." Like it just WANTS to bond and interweave with itself. We're at a standstill in our troubleshooting. Ideas? [more inside]
Hyperbole aside, after seeing the recent image of the Trump press conference where he was flanked by four bald white guys, I've realized I kinda look like a type of person I really don't like. [more inside]
Hoping some fellow thick-hair-having MeTas can help me out. I have a lot of very thick hair, and managing it while sleeping has gotten out of control. If I leave it down, I wake up halfway through the night drenched in sweat. If I put it up in a ponytail, I sleep comfortably but have the dreaded 'pony crease' the next day. The same goes for any sort of braid, bun, etc. [more inside]
Are there any brands of soft t-shirt/jersey-style men's long-sleeved shirts available in the UK that are notably longer in the body than other brands? [more inside]
I enjoy wearing false eyelashes, but I am a newbie. Who makes the best false eyelashes? Magnets, or glue? (I've tried professional eyelash extensions but that's not what I am inquiring about today.) Best practices for applying them? If they're marketed as being wearable multiple times, tips to make them "last" as long as possible? [more inside]
Looking for these earrings that Nilou Motamed wore on last night's episode of Top Chef, or similar.
Having previously mooched off of my friends and family, I'm now in the market for my very first hair dryer, which I'd like to be cheap-ish. Preferably under $50, ideally as cheap as possible. I mostly only use it for getting protein treatments to dry as quickly as possible (drying Aphogee goo onto the hair); I don't use it for styling or anything. What features should I look for or decide based on? Watts? Ionic? What differentiates hair dryers at different price points? Any recommendations for brands/models that are good and durable? Thanks.
I can’t walk around like “darn shoes! It’s the shoes. I’m fine. It’s this damn boot. Sorry.” They were Frye ankle boots I got on clearance but I’m hoping to get another year out of them. Can a cobbler fix this atrocity? [more inside]
I can find petite style blogs/accts and fat style blogs/accts, but it's hard to find the combination. As an overweight 4'11'' woman, I'm finding that what works for thin petite women or tall fat women doesn't necessarily look great on me, and I'm struggling to figure out how to make clothes work on my body in a way that I like. About to turn 30 and wondering how many of my skin problems are “treatable.” [more inside]

What’s your favorite shampoo for curly hair? I’ve been using DevaCurl low-poo shampoo and the matching conditioner, which work pretty well, but I’m out. My salon uses Aveda, which is *so* expensive, but...they’re $24 for 8.5 oz, and the DevaCurl is $24 for 12 oz...so also not cheap. Are there other shampoos I should be considering? [more inside]

My octopus hair clip just broke. This is the best one I’ve ever found and I fear I won’t be able to replace it. Here is a picture of the two broken halves and one of how they fit together. [more inside]

I love this scarf (pics below the fold). However, it is very old. I don't want to embrace the "this teacup is already broken" philosophy. I want (a version of) this scarf to be with me forever. Do you have a matter replicator I can borrow? Do you think I could commission a near duplicate for a reasonable price? [more inside]

I'm trying to transition my wardrobe from fleece to wool. I like Ibex but they are (currently) defunct, so their items are only available on eBay and generally not returnable. Evidence (w small) suggests that their torso style is longer and skinnier than mine. If someone out there has an Ibex women's medium top, would you measure the torso length for me? I'm thinking zipper length if it's a full zip, collar to bottom edge otherwise. Thanks in advance. (Other advice on nice plain wool clothing mfgrs beyond Smartwool and Icebreaker is welcome.)

I got a nice bag (think Coach, not Chanel) I suspect I won't use as a gift from a relative I don't feel great about asking about a gift receipt, and would like to learn about my options for reselling it. [more inside]

If you regularly shave your head how do you do it? Are there electric shavers that are good? What's your routine? I'd like to avoid razors but I want a razor-like close shave (or nearly).
Howdy MeFites! I’m hoping our resident sewing experts can help me with the name of a basic sewing stitch my mother taught me when I was young. I’d like to research it further online (to determine whether I’m doing it right and when it’s appropriate to use). But to do so, I need to know what it’s called. The closest I have gotten to is a lock stitch but the videos of lock stitching on YouTube do not show this exact method. Description of the stitch is inside. [more inside]
