For the first time in my life I need sunglasses!

I've been bespectacled person since elementary school and sunglasses have always seemed unnecessary/out of reach. I've been driving for almost 3 years now and I am finally at a point where I admit that I need sunglasses. I made the mistake of driving west during sunset today and I regretted it because I had no sunglasses. How do people with prescription glasses make sunglasses work? What are my options? [more inside]

Stage make-up recommendations, copious sweat edition

My ballet teacher asked me to be in the year end recital; putting my 43 year old ass into a white tutu also means I'll have to do some form of stage makeup. My makeup stash is non-existent thanks to my wee tots smearing what little I had all over their face/body/hair/bathroom. Please give me your product suggestions and techniques. [more inside]

Transitioning chem. relaxed hair to natural curls - but for a white lady

I have very curly hair. It's been getting curlier as I age, and I had it chemically relaxed because I was having a crisis over it. Bad choice. I'd like to transition back to my natural curls, and there's lots of advice on transitioning to natural hair for people of colour - but I'm white and I don't think it's appropriate for me to wear protective styles or headscarves. Cute après outifits ... on a budget

Long weekend in Aspen coming up, just as I've worn out all my cute winter things. Suggestions on where to find (online or IRL) cute off the slopes outfits? I don't like too-skimpy leggings or flare legs, and won't shop at Wal-Mart or Wal-Mart owned businesses. (Sorry, Modcloth.) So, sources for good quality sweaters/sweater dresses, thicker more structured leggings, et cetera, please? I do have a cute faux leopard coat and the boot situation is in hand. Thanks!

I think I’m fine, but maybe just demi

I really like “demi-fine” jewelry (often gold vermeil), as it doesn’t irritate my skin like cheaper metals but is still often interesting and fun, not too expensive/“classic.” My usual price range is $75-250 for a piece, depending on the size etc. Any recommendations? [more inside]

Oh the vanity!

I am almost 38 and I want to treat myself to one of the fancy laser face treatment things but it would be great to get the hive mind's ideas. If you had sun damage/melasma from hormones and dull skin etc. what did you do that had the greatest impact? I have about 1500 to spend. [more inside]

Please bring me the science of skin care for different body parts

After spending the weekend visiting my BFF which of course included rummaging through and using all of her hair and skin products, I am sold on Hyaluronic Acid for my dry skin. But I don't understand if there is an actual difference between HA sold for one's body vs HA sold for one's face. [more inside]

Help me replace these beloved boots

I’ve had these Frye ‘Rogan’ men’s tall lace-up boots for almost a decade, having worn them with suits (before they got so beat-up) and casually. After several resolings the leather is splitting and they need replacing. I want something similar, but the closest Frye has in tall boots now has zipper+laces. I only want laces. I’m looking for something higher quality than Doc Martens and resole-able. Red Wings are nice but their tall boots look like hunting boots. I’m willing to spend a bit with the idea that these will last close to another decade. Wishlist below the fold: [more inside]

Wide plastic headbands that won't give my big ol' noggin a headache?

Calling all big-headed accessory lovers: I have a somewhat large head for a woman. I love the look of wide plastic headbands that have been covered with fabric, a la this model, but typically they give me a headache because they are just a bit too tight. Have any of my larger-headed compatriots found a source of wide, flexible, plastic headbands that don't cause headaches? [more inside]

Oh my god, I hate my hair

I hate my hair. This has been a lifelong problem, but my hatred only seems to grow stronger the older I get. My hair is lank, wavy in a frustrating rather than cute way, and an uninspiring dishwater blond. I'm so frustrated with feeling self-conscious about my hair, despite spending decent money on good cuts with skilled stylists. I'm hoping for suggestions for possible styles and moral support on how to cope with it. [more inside]
