Hi! I am sewing a thing (long furby sea monster) and I need some help figuring out how to space little pieces that will be sewn into a seam 1) evenly along the length of the seam, and 2) so that the space between them will be equal between one piece and the next, minus the seam allowance. There's a tl;dr, picture, and

Someone hired me to transfer old VHS tapes for him. We agreed on a price and I transferred them. He's come back and asked about some issues with the digital files that I'm 95% sure are just problems with the tapes and I'm not sure what the best way to deal with it is.

I got a new prescription, and discovered I need readers. Glasses I still have with an older prescription work just fine at all distances I need them for, so I wear them. Driving is fine. Reading a computer screen is fine. Reading a book is fine so long as I turn on a light. I'd like to continue wearing the older prescription, but the glasses are really worn. What can I do?

Our upstairs toilet is having a problem with what I think is phantom flushing. My google research tells me the part that is going up and down is the float cup. Every few days we get a *terrible* sound that makes a pipe rumble and sounds like air to my untrained ear. Do you know what is happening and what we should do?

I keep Timeshift up to date to facilitate reload if the machine gets unhappy and/or fussy. But my puter got unhappy and fussy at the encryption login; I couldn't get near Timeshift, or anything else. Most all was backed up using external drives, lost a few files plus had to reload Mint, no big deal. I did encrypt it again because hey, Linux Mint, easy-peasy. But supposing the machine gets south-footed again, how can I get to Timeshift? And what the hell happened to lock me out -- never happened before or since.

I need your ideas for modifying my exercise bike so I can use it while recovering from left shoulder surgery. It's super uncomfortable to lean only on my right hand. It would be much more tenable to sit upright while using my right hand to keep my balance, but I can't figure out what to do to make this possible. Any suggestions?

My spouse's employer recently held an online meeting where their new policy of having employees currently working from home use their own time off (vacation/sick etc) to cover time lost because of power outages at their home due to weather. the employer is not covering power, internet or equipment for the work done from home. This doesn't seem right. Is it? (You are not my lawyer.)

My most excellent boss is moving up and leaving us, and instead of signing her card with the usual junk we sign those kinds of cards with, I'd like to write a quotation or perhaps a song lyric about being, I don't know, rudderless, without guidance, etc. Maybe even abandoned. The more over-the-top the better -- this is meant to be silly. Any ideas out there?

Can any of my fellow fremdschämen sufferers tell me how they reacted to the new Emma movie? I love Jane Austen, but I've been known to walk out of the room when characters in a movie or TV show are embarrassed or humiliated. I don't want to pay for the movie if I won't be able to finish it.

This is the bringing tubes of gochujang (Korean red pepper paste) to the hotel restaurant or packing a whole suitcase full of microwavable rice packs and instant ramen to Spain so you don't have to rely on the local food, which may not be to your taste.

Same (or similar?) picture in each panel of a person with a full shopping cart full of wine. On the left the character is saying, "don't worry, I'm not an alcoholic, I'm just having a party" and on the right the caption is, "don't worry, I'm not having a party, I'm just an alcoholic."

Feral kitten we got when he was very young, whom we raised with lots of love and tenderness, went from being super sweet for the first month or two (slept every night in our arms, purred a lot, only bit us 10% of the time) to 90% biting us and 10% sweet/purring, and now only sleeps under our bed. He is however extremely food-motivated so I was wondering if there was a way to train the biting out of him?

The time has come to replace my beloved 2001 Prius. I'm determined to get something with the same or better gas mileage (>40 mpg) and am looking at plug-in hybrids, with short range electric capacity and hybrid motor, like the Subaru Crosstrek PHEV. My major complication is that I have no place to plug in a car. I live in a multi-unit building with no garage or driveway, on a city street with difficult parking. Can I make this work?

a few years ago i was over at my aunts house and some food show came on where the talent/talking heads was a food guy with a heavy southern accent and an endless supply of colorfully worded expressions about food and life. He wore kind of flamboyant suit jackets as i recall and my aunt said he had maybe one some kind of food show talent search? white guy, brownish redish hair maybe a goatee but i could be wrong about the details of his hair and facial hair. He was so funny! My aunt has no idea who i am talking about. Perhaps you do?

I remember Space Ghost saying "I like my body...I love my body," or something similar on an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. I don't remember the context but the line delivery was really funny. It could be from another show but I'm 99.9% sure it was Space Ghost. What episode am I looking for?

My 88-year-old mother was diagnosed with a meningioma (non-malignant brain tumor) many years ago. She undergoes semi-annual MRIs to track the growth of the tumor, even though her neurologist doesn't recommend surgery at her age. They apparently are mainly tracking its growth to determine the type/amount of pain meds they prescribe. Before she gets the MRI she has an Rx to take beforehand: one pill at home, and then one pill while en route to the clinic. (Is this typical? I don't know.)

Sewing experts of Metafilter, help! I found a great face mask that I just had to have (adorable bunny face pattern). Unfortunately, it is much too large for me, and I am struggling to figure out a way to make it fit. It's a standard "flat" type of mask without pleats. Link to the general idea included below.

I find it hard to get him to concentrate on more than one issue at a time – so if I send an email with three questions in it, he may only answer one of them. I feel like I am nagging having to repeatedly email the same questions to get a clear answer. I don’t think he is doing this deliberately/maliciously, and with other tics in his behaviour I wonder if he has undiagnosed ADHD. Can you recommend approaches that will help me get and keep his attention?

I've got digital files of some bright, cartoony artwork that I'd like to print out in the most permanent and beautiful way possible for display in my home. How do I sort though all the possibilities? My head swims when I read about all the options. Just when I think I have found "the one," I find that it is now unavailable, or has poor reviews. Should I even read the reviews? Fading vision, hearing loss, occasional issues with hand and arm strength factor in selection.
