I recently read a copy of Fortune magazine and found it interesting. I'd like to subscribe to a business/investment magazine....any others I should consider?
Name that tune! In "Unfaithfully Yours", Rex Harrison cracks a joke around 00:16:30 about blah blah "pizzacato con motto vibratto" ("...like a dentist chipping out an old filling!"), then his orchestra launches into a classical piece. What is he having them play? Googling does not suggest that's its title.

I want to learn PHP and MySQL. I just installed both onto my Mac OS 10.4.2 machine to serve as a sort of testing ground. I also downloaded CocoaMySQL. It's asking for a host, user and password. I assume the host is localhost. However, I can't figure out how to create a user. Can anybody help with that? Also, what would you recommend as the best learning resources for somebody who can get around HTML and CSS, but has very little programming experience?

I'm trying to figure out if this has happened to anybody else.
Last night, in the dead of night, my boyfriend pulled me on top of him and started kissing me and started trying to take my pajama pants off, ostensibly in the hopes of getting laid. I was really tired, so I told him to lay off and let me go back to sleep. This morning I asked him about it and he has no memory of doing this. It's happened before- he'll wake me up in the middle of the night by kissing me, and in the morning denies it ever happened.
I actually think it's pretty cute and funny- and especially ironic, considering he is not the most affectionate guy.
What I'm wondering is, is this normal? Has it ever happened to anyone else?

I need to get 40-60 gigs of data to about 200 customers a month. Currently I am using DVDs and am finding it a total hassle. I am considering harddrives but I think they will be more or less an equivalent hassle. Is there some other way? Downloads seem a little unfeasible due to the size but I'd be interesting in hearing anything.

Help me find this old DOS computer game. The talk of SkiFree reminded me of a favorite DOS Civil War simulator that was called, get this, Civil War Simulator, CWS.exe. It was a turn-based game, with multiple armies (Jackson, McClellan, Grant, Lee, etc.) that started out in certain cities and the player (as either north or south) moved the troops around to various battles, which were won based on numbers of troops, supplies, skill, location, etc. You could split or fuse your armies to take on more opponent's armies or fight them better and more. What are some songs that remind us to be thankful for our good fortune? Just the fact that you are sitting at a computer reading this probably puts you in the top 10% of wealthy people in the world. I'd like to make a CD of songs that have a positive message about appreciating and being thankful for what we've got. I remember singing as a child: "Be thankful for the good things that you've got. The good things that you've got are for many just a dream, So be thankful for the good things that we've got." That's the jist I'm going for, but not children's songs.
My co-blogger and I upgraded from Movable Type 2.64 to MT 3.2, mostly for the rumored spam-fighting hottness. But now we're finding ourselves having to go through and manually junk thousands of spam comments every day, tediously picking out the real stuff. We've got the latest MT-Blacklist installed, but it doesn't seem to be doing a thing, and seems to have less functionality (where'd the de-spam option go??) than our old MT-Blacklist plugin. We're getting buried, and nothing seems to be working the way it should. What do we do? [more inside]

I'm in a long-distance six-month-old relationship with a wonderful woman (we see each other every weekend, and I plan to be with her next year), who recently, literally turns nasty on me, casting all sorts of wild accusations (details below). Is there a simple proof to demonstrate the human impact on global climate change? A common argument made by American conservatives is that humans can't possibly have a great enough impact to make a difference. Surely there's some relatively simple bit of logic that can prove our impact. Perhaps something along the lines of: "Global emissions of greenhouse gases amount of X billion tons each year, or Y trillion in the past century. Every Z billion tons of greenhouse gases increase the earth's radiative forcing by A%, each percent of which warms the earth by B degrees."

Despite plenty of googling, and even email with Microsoft's support - I cannot seem to solve my problem. I'm wondering if perhaps any of my fellow geeks have had this problem: I run a web/email server of my own, colocated in a highly reputable facility. After much soul searching, and a few good quotes on the green, I have decided to start nurturing a small web 2.0 company serving a small niche on the longtail. I have serendipitously stumbled upon an idea that I can't stop thinking about, am confident about, and am truly passionate about! I would like to think I am a saavy developer, marketer, and communicator. Unfortunately I am plain ole' dum when it comes to legal frameworks, financial structures, and graphic design. I am in the middle of the ocean, and quality services here are prohibitively expensive. Where can I find a good onshore lawyer, accountant, insurer, and graphic designer to solve my Rubik's cube? Are there soup-to-nuts consultancies that incubate small software startups like this? I need a wide array of advice and help concering: Advantages of onshore vs. offshore physical incorporation and data hosting, choosing a beneficial incorporation structure ( LLC, Partnership, etc. ), understanding my obligations and liabilities to subscribing customers, painless financial management, beautiful multiple-themed CSS templates for pre-existing XHTML pages, and stylish custom icon sets. I have devoted a bit of capital to this and would like to wisely invest in cool people that will complement my inadequacies. Can anyone steer me towards any quality sites, services, or partners to clear these important functions off my entreprenurial plate? In the spirit of Open-source, upon incorporation, I will issue an equity position in my company to the best lead.

What I suspected, I now know...when the big one hits, it's everyman for himself and with a population of almost 20 million people things will get bad fast. So what is the sensible thing to do? Try to leave? hunker down and wait? where can I go and get reliable advice?

One or more times weekly, my cat Cooper is afflicted with a very strange problem. The skin on his lower back - near his tail - starts twitching. Like, a lot. He'll stop; turn his head with a sort-of pissed off look and STARE at the spot on his back while it continues to twitch. Eventually he starts licking the spot furiously. After a few seconds of licking, he'll explode from his position and go galloping across the room or - many times - the entire house. It can go on for as many as 10 minutes at times; this series of behaviors. It seems like he’s trying to run away from this invisible force – this “butt ghost” as I’ve come to call it. Can anyone explain this?

What classic motorbike should I buy? I want a street bike for occasional use that has some pedigree to it. I am looking for suggestions as to what are "classic" bikes - ones that have a solid history and will not be too hard to repair or find parts for. I want something ideally between 350cc and 550cc, but would consider up to a 750. Possible examples would be Honda CB400, BMW R75, I dunno....anything before about 1990. Old is good, but the only caveat is that I do not want a loud bike, so a 4-stroke preferred. The last time I rode it was the late 80's, and I had a '83 Yamaha Vision, which I always thought of as the poor man's beemer - it was liquid cooled and had shaft drive, which seemed pretty cool at the time. (I am not interested in any low riders or racers, although I would not rule out an on/off-road.)

DoctorWhoFilter: in the UK we have a TV show called Doctor Who, in which this dude with a long scarf travels through time in what is essentially a small garden shed called a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space). More extraordinary than it's time travelling ability though, the TARDIS is actually bigger on the inside - you walk into small garden shed to find huge room the size of a small television studio. Hence, in the UK when you, for example, get into a car that looks kinda small but is actually incredibly roomy inside, one might say, "bloody hell, it's like a TARDIS in here." So the question is, is there an American equivalent?

I have iTunes 5 installed on two machines, one at work, one at home, with my iPod set to sync automatically to the iTunes library on my home machine. When using iTunes 4.x, I was able to attach my iPod to my work machine and then configure the iPod (in the iTunes preferences) to 'manually' update, rather than automatically, enabling me to play files directly off my iPod on my work machine. When I returned to my home machine, I would switch the home machine's iTunes/iPod settings back to 'update automatically', causing iTunes to update the files on the home machine with a new Last Played date and Play Count. iTunes 5, however, seems to have a bug in this regard: it notes a random 10 or 15-song selection of tracks played via the work machine's iTunes 5, but that's all. A day's worth of listening to tracks isn't logged as played, messing up Smart Playlists that grab music I haven't heard in a while. 1) Is this unusual or universal 2) Any fixes? [more inside]

Here's the background. My girlfriend is from the republic of Ireland. I am antipodean. We both live in the United Kingdom. I am 33, partially sighted (although I lead a very main-stream life and have no disabled friends). I say the part about me being partially sighted because I believe it's a big part of what has made me ME and given me a slightly odd-shaped perspective compared to mainstream western society. My gf is 36. Our relationsip is about 18 months old and seems to suddenly be coming apart. Two main parts of this seem to be 1) the fact that she seems completely unable to discuss / articulate her feelings or accept any kind of responsibility for them and 2) she appears to be trying to drive my friends away. To the unsuspecting, this may seem like an obvious case of incompatibility. It is however similar to what hapened in my previous relationship of five years. The question: I want to know if anyone else has had the same experience and if so and if they managed to drag things off the rocks, how they worked with their partner to go about it? [more inside]

Many people, including myself, read personal observations and see references to current events in literature that do not reflect the authors thinking on a subject. An example is the Robert Frost poem Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening as being a reflection on suicide. Frost has denied that this was his reference. Some current book and movie viewers and some reviewers also see references to current United States politics in current books and movies. Revenge of the Siths and the latest Harry Potter novel are examples. What is this called? Can it be recognized when someone is putting spin on a work that the author/director never intended?

Are there any downsides to that? Or conversely, if anyones chosen to have them removed, why?

Where should I go next weekend? I live in Durham, NC and would like to keep the drive under two hours. Key points would include: really great B&B or eco-hotel (treehouse? massive windows looking outside?), great walks or cute town nearby, a body of water (lake, ocean, inlet) or nice woods, clean lines rather than frilly, or luxurious rather than old-lady-B&B. It would be great if you could recommend a specific place (Asheville is too far away for this weekend), or better yet, a specific hotel/B&B/inn. Pretend that money is no object, but I'd like to keep this under $200 a night (less is better) if possible; if a really unique place came up, I'd splurge. [more inside]

I'd like to find a site that is a clearinghouse for B&B's which is more searchable. For example, I'd like a place that is 2 1/2 hours or less from Boston within a certain price range, etc. So far, all the sites I've been two have been so limited. Any ideas? How did Kubrick film the psychedelic 'stargate' sequence of "2001: A Space Odyssey"? Some of the movie's special effects are obviously crude CGI (like the cockpit displays during spacecraft rendezvous) but the ending seems far more sophisticated. Regular old animation? Looks too... digital. Articles on 'the making of' I've seen never discuss this all-important visual (although it's cool knowing about the spinning set used for example in the jogging scene).

We are looking for some resources (primarily books, maybe some web sites) relevant to our situation that will provide information and support for helping us to set up proper rules, boundaries, etc. for the boys and some other resources that will help us to help the boys grieve the death of their mother. We were in a bookstore last night and were overwhelmed by the amount of choices. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of weeks ago, I asked a question about "The European" newspaper, published from 1990-1999. Actually, the reason why I asked is because, in the name of fostering European understanding, they had asked readers for jokes which didn't target a specific nationality. Seems that such jokes are rare, because what they tended to get were jokes that made fun of absolutely EVERYBODY (along the lines of the famous "Heaven and Hell in Europe", for example). I've been trying to find these. Any suggestions where I might be able to find this old content of "The European" newspaper, or else any other good suggestions for similar jokes? Have done all the homeowner checks (cleaned unit, checked filter and vents, sealed cracks and ductwork, etc.) A technician charged us $140 (having "cleaned" the unit and checked the coolant) to hold his cigarette up to the running unit and, using the smoke as his diagnostic tool, proclaimed that the fan was running...backwards. Trying to remember a videogame. It was an early version of those cartoon games, like Dragon-whatever, which were basically just cartoon clips linked together, and you had to do the right joystick/button thing to keep them going. It had a Japanimation look, I think a spy theme, and the only clip I definitely remember was where you were driving this little car horizontally across a basically vertical cliff. I know that's not much to go on, but it's driving me nuts...

Banking question: I have a small business in the US, I live in the US, I'm a US citizen. A number of my clients are in Canada. Everytime they send me a check, my local bank has to take a flat $10 out of it - even if its in US funds. Most of these checks are less than $50, so that's a pretty big hit. Apparently this $10 fee is not just my bank, but from their processor. I know I could ask my clients to pay in paypal, but a lot of them aren't set up to do it that way, and I'm reluctant to make them change. I emailed a canadian bank, thinking I'd just mail a deposit off once a month, and then every few months transfer funds, but I need to be there in person to set up the account. Do I just need to insist that clients use paypal? Are there other options I'm not thinking of? Any advice would be welcome.

I have a Wireless Ethernet bridge which I have connected to a PC via an ethernet cross-over cable. This is working fine in terms of allowing access to the wireless network I can browse the net from the PC etc. with no problem. The problem comes when I try to ping this PC behind the wireless bridge from another PC. My other PC's on the network simply refuse to see it - all PC's are connected to the same wireless network and have no problem seeing each other except the PC connected via the wireless ethernet bridge. All PC's are in the same Windows XP workgroup and indeed in the workgroup the bridged PC can be seen in the network neighborhood by all the other PC's with no problems but cannot ping it or access it via TCP/IP etc. All PC's are in the same subnet - mask is 255.255.255.0. All PC's are configured to have the default gateway of the Router - 192.168.0.1. All IP Addresses are static as well. What am I doing wrong here or will the wireless bridge effectively hide the second PC from any other PC's on the network - clearly not an acceptable situation. I'm 99% certain this is not a firewall issue either as the second PC can see other PC's on the network with ease. I'm going slowly mad over this so any help gratefully received. TIA, Matt

It used to be the case that when using lynx (from linux) if I browsed to a tar.gz file, it would ask me where I wanted to save the file. In recent versions, lynx seems to have changed its behavior. Now it attempts to open the tar.gz file... which seems really stupid. How can I make it go back to the old behavior? [more inside]
I'm working on a patio project at home, and I'm trying to calculate the square footage of an area that's in the shape of an irregular pentagram. It's about 19ft 6 inches long at it's base, and then has measurements of 70", 93", 43", and 16ft (192in). Is there a utility online I can use to calculate this area, or possibly a feature in Visio that I can use to do this with? Many thanks in advance for any time you take to post.

I have had a serious long term problem with my prostate, with predictable results not only on my sex life but on almost every aspect of my life. I have gone to a variety of specialists, none of whom seem to have an answer. I have had several courses of antibiotics and been put on Flomax, which has helped, but still leaves a lot of room for improvement. A naturopath was able to help quite a bit, with various natural remedies, but while the pain has gone away, I have little sexual feeling and sometimes have great difficulty achieving orgasm. I have searched the internet without much success and tried to learn as much as possible about various problems with the prostate, such as chronic prostatitis, but have not found anything very useful. Any information and advice would be greatly appreciated.

At Dallas-Fort Worth airport the other day, I saw dozens and dozens of Army soldiers. Presumably, they were about to ship over to Iraq (everyone was in desert gear, families were there, etc.). Were these soldiers traveling via commercial airliners? Aren't there military transport aircraft for that?

I was looking for some coding ideas the other day, and I remembered the5k.org. But it's gone! The internet archive doesn't have the any of the entries. The original site of the movement seems to be abandoned as well. Is there another place I could find the entries?

BackpackFilter: I'm looking for a specific type of backpack. Small profile (shouldn't stick out more than about 6in, holds between 1000-1600 cubic in). Clean design (doesn't have a million straps and buckles hanging off). Doesn't look corporatey/consultantish. Rectangular is better than bulbous. [more inside]
I was born in St. Louis, but I don't remember a thing about it (my parents moved when I was very young). Now, I'm going back. [more inside]
How can I transfer files to/from a Motorola V3 Razr and a new Powerbook if the Bluetooth File Exchange seemingly can't do it? It recognizes the phone, but can't see the internal structure of the phone's storage system. Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools has no Mac version. I can sync contacts and calendars with iSync and via Bluetooth, but I have a friend who has the same phone, but the inverse problem: he can transfer files with Bluetooth, but can't get the phone to sync contacts and calendars.
I like tootpastefordinnger, Donald Barthelme, Russel Edson, and Monty Python & Kids in the Hall when they are reveling in pure absurdity (and not parody). What else would I like? [more inside]
I just moved and got a new phone number that I'd rather not change. Twice every night at 4am, the phone rings and there's a fax machine on the other end. The caller ID shows "Unknown name, Unknown number." Besides leaving the phone off the hook or hooking up a fax machine (that I don't have), what can I do to stop these calls? [more inside]
