How do you know you're in love (and willing to spend your life with someone) versus just loving someone? [more inside]
In the early 2000s I read a short erotica story. It was part of an anthology, likely lesbian. The "protagonist" masturbates with a Rolls Royce hood ornament (which is called the Spirit of Ecstasy). What is the name of this story and where can I find it again?
My friend fell about 15 feet while we were bouldering and severely dislocated his elbow. Tendons were, to the surprise of the doctor, not torn; ligaments were pretty bad, broken. They said he had a "terrible trifecta". He currently has his arm in a cast and they're monitoring progress to determine surgery or not. We're likely looking at some 15 weeks he's in some state of immobility for his arm. He is supposed to rotate his shoulder as much as possible and clench his hand. He's an incredibly active and dynamic person and very much wants to recover fully and get back to activity. It's pretty difficult to watch him in the current state , despite the fact that we're so glad that he only injured his elbow. How do we help him have the best recovery possible? 1) Tips for supporting the physical recovery of a dislocated appendage and 2) Does anyone have any tips on how to stay sane during his time out? Everything appreciated. Thanks!
What helped you stop fearing that you're a bad person for putting your needs before others wants, when those people were really suffering? (Context: relatiobships) [more inside]
My friend just had a breakup and wants to know if there is an app to manage Facebook posts to help her wipe the boyfriend material without having to review all of it.
We're upgrading a room in our house, and I'd like to install "tunable white" LED lighting, where you can not only dim it but change it between warm white and bright, sunlight-type white over the course of the day. But we don't want to hook our lights up to the wifi or use our phones to control them! This is more challenging than I'd expected. [more inside]
Within this year got two diagnoses of bipolar and depression while still on my mother's insurance. She recently lost her job. Could it be because of this? Also how will this affect her in looking for another job and insurance? Is there any to hide this or fix it by getting these diagnoses removed?
I'm having my tonsils removed next week and am wondering how long I should wait before giving fellatio will be safe/comfortable again? [more inside]

This year I will be co-teaching a class of English Language Learners world history (from roughly 15th century China through the Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment, French Revolution, Imperialism, Industrial Revolution, 20th century etc.) The majority of our class will have some proficiency in English, but we recently learned that a small group will be beginner ELLs with almost no knowledge of English. How can we best help these newcomers learn English and acclimate them to their new home, teach them some world history, and also support the majority of our students with different needs? I want to play Dragon Age: Inquisition and Witcher 3, but my current laptop is not sufficient. What should I buy? I don't need the prettiest graphical experience ever, although, of course, that's nice. It'd be awesome if the laptop were good enough to allow me to play the next Mass Effect, next DA 4, and even the next Elder Scrolls game (maybe this is wistful thinking, given that a release date isn't even out yet...). Should I just go with the Wirecutter's suggested laptop, or is there a better choice for me? [more inside]

I would like to record multiple instances of an event on my iPhone. This event happens several times a day, at more-or-less random times. I would like to be able to do something very simple (like touch an icon on my phone screen) to note that "this happened now" and then to go back over time and see each occasion (with date and time info) when the event happened. I’m in a tricky situation at work. I secured an administrative assistant to help me in the office, but a coworker of mine is dominating this woman’s time, leaving me to struggle all by myself. How do I fix this without causing animosity in the office? [more inside]
There used to be a website that would encourage you to write a set amount (500 words?) every day. This is meant for stream-of-consicouness, just get it on paper writing. The website would store your writings (but not allow public sharing) and remind you to keep up the habit. Now I can't find it. Is it gone? Any other suggestions for how to get a writing habit going?
Remember the carnival/shitty amusement park ride called The Rotor? For anyone who doesn't, people would stand against the wall of this cylinder that would start spinning. After a little while, the floor would drop and everyone everyone would stick in place to the wall... [more inside]
I have a 10-year old Samsung HDTV (LNT4661F). I run audio out via RCA cables into my 30 year old stereo amp, keeping the TV's volume at zero. Problem is when I hit "mute" on my cable (Verizon Fios) remote control, it doesn't mute (oddly, when I hit the virtual "mute" button on the virtual remote in my FIOS iphone app, the sound DOES mute!) there a way to make the cable remote (one of these mute the volume?
Windows 7 taskbar has a setting on how button combining works - never combine / combine when taskbar is full, always combine. Is it possible, whether natively or with an external program, to make this program-specific? For example, if I wanted to have Outlook windows not-combined, but Firefox sessions combined?

Specifically I'm looking for movies where the main character or characters are normal or normal-ish people who get pulled into a crappy or dangerous situation (often life-threatening). This tends to happen like 20-30 minutes into the movie. Date Night, The Dream Team, Adventures in Babysitting... for some reason all the examples I can think of are old. I'd love some movies that fit this paradigm that were either bigger hits or more recent. Thank you!
My dad wants to move his several-year long collection of photos from his aging/dying Macbook to his pretty new Windows 7 laptop. I haven't used Windows regularly in a long time, and the last time I did I used Picasa for my photo gallery software, but it looks like Google stopped supporting/offering it some time ago. Does anyone have any free (or very cheap) alternatives you could recommend? [more inside]
I'm in a fun/slightly anxiety provoking situation at my work (a small, education non-profit) of getting to pick my own title. I am currently director of programming, but in recognition of the scope of my work and the fact that I functionally co-lead the organization with our ED, I have been offered the title of A) Deputy Director, B) Chief Academic Officer or C) Something Awesome of My Own Invention. What say you, AskMeFi? (Some snowflakes below.) [more inside]

I have a B.A. in Geography with honors but developed a mental illness following graduation. I am 31 years old and live in southern California. I have a therapist and psychiatrist and take medication. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make friends, have a steady significant other, or build a solid career since developing this diagnosis. I work as a janitor for a school district and volunteer at a mental health center. My question is: should I ever expect to have a full, complete, and "normal" life and career like other people? How do I maximize my opportunities in life and develop a rich and fulfilling existence despite the mental diagnosis that I carry around? [more inside]

It's at 1:06 in this video of the Funkdoobiest song "Who Ra Ra." I believe the first part is "My mom said 'Boy you're a _________'" and I can't figure out what the phrase is. It's always driven me nuts, and I have never seen a complete set of lyrics for this song. The video is NSFW, just FYI.
Analog BKNY is a relatively new club in Gowanus. Some DJs I like will be there soon, but I'm having a hard time figuring out if it's the kind of club that a skinny computer nerd like me can just go to or if there's going to be, like, hostile bouncers and weird status judgments. Any Brooklyn MeFites who've been there and can comment on the general vibe?

I read a wonderful quote not that long ago, an aphorism about relationships, but now, no matter how hard I Google, I can't track the original down. Maybe you can help? The essence of it was: We misjudge the people we love twice: First for the better, and second for the worse. [more inside]

I've always wanted to wear red lipstick. Someone told me to try Max Factor's Ruby Woo because it's supposed to be universally flattering... does anyone have any other suggestions?

I've been working on a manuscript of poems about Colony Collapse Disorder. I've done a lot of research on theories in mainstream science. However, I know that some people have suggested UFO's were involved, and there are probably other conspiracy theories out there, and I'm trying to find specifics. However, googling CCD-related words in combination with things like "aliens," "Jesuits," and "illuminati" have yielded nothing. Can anybody track down some actual posts/articles/videos that include fringe theories about the die-off?
I'm looking for regular web-based sources of amazing animal photos, stories, and videos. I'm interested in content that shows silly animals, incredibly athletic animals, or (particularly) extraordinary animal intelligence. I'm even interested in things like dog-training videos! Can you point me to forums, subreddits, YouTube channels, or other corners of the web that regularly publish stuff about amazing animals?

Continuation of previous questions - husband was offered a new job, wants to take it, but is currently in France on a business trip. New job offered prorated signing bonus - if he starts in 2 weeks he gets 7K, if he starts in 4 weeks he gets 5K. He wants to give as close to 2 weeks notice as possible with old job so as to not burn bridges, but 2K difference is a pretty good incentive. So he's thinking of giving notice tomorrow and finishing out the trip, coming back this Thursday, and then finishing out the rest of the notice period at the home office. Is it an incredibly bad idea to give notice while travelling? Could they refuse to reimburse him for travel expenses / cancel his ticket / make life miserable, legally speaking? [more inside]

Thinking about moving from Wisconsin to Chicago this year. The grad program I am in allows me quite a bit of flexibility for location so long as I am back monthly for lab stuff. My interests are in 1) living in a reasonably interesting and pleasant part of the city, accessible to cool stuff, without breaking the bank, and 2) picking up some part time work that will help cover the increased cost of living and also pad my bank account a bit (complication: I need flexibility so that I can, with quite a lot of advance notice, occasionally miss a week or so). My Dwelling and Other Structures (house + detached garage) are listed at a Limit of Liability which is 5% less than the house/garage cost four years ago and at least 20% less than it would cost to replace them now (since house building hasn't gotten cheaper and my house has increased 10-15% in value according to real estate comps.) Should I increase the Dwelling and Other Structures coverages to cover what it would really take to rebuild my house?

My home state is rife with problems, and it's government is corrupt and incompetent. As a public employee, I don't feel safe trusting my retirement pension to a state legislature that consistently relies on stopgap measures to avoid deficit spending and lacks the political will/intelligence to solve the issues that will most certainly arrive when even more Baby Boomers apply for Medicaid benefits (which are partially paid for by the state). I've decided to look for greener pastures. Please help me identify some areas I should investigate for a future relocation. [more inside]

When I was younger, I had a book that was poetry and stories for children. Poetry included poems and illustrations by Edward Lear; the stories included "The Carp in the Bathtub," a Pecos Pete? story and possibly an excerpt from "Anne of Green Gables." The stories were illustrated. I have Googled this to death, tried looking up books via Library of Congress online, no luck. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm trying to remember the name of a movie from the early 1980's, and Googling hasn't helped. The overall plot was that it took place in a small presumably California town and there was an earthquake and as a result, the water and/or the dairy supply became contaminated, and the residents started behaving in ways they wouldn't normally, like they had a loss of inhibitions or something similar. I don't remember how it ended, either. Thanks.

I've had really great peperoncini pastas out at restaurants, but have not been able to replicate them at home - my home cooked version(s) lack flavor (sad and bland) and just don't have that oily, savory slickness you get in a great restaurant version. Car is a 2009 Toyota Matrix with 67,000 miles. Check Engine light came on two days ago, went off after oil change, came on again. Diagnostic at auto store today said P0354 Ignition Coil D Primary / Secondary Circuit. Light went off again after restarting after diagnostic, but I've only drive 5 miles since. It will difficult to get car to shop this week; might put another 50 miles on the car in the meantime. Is this just a performance issue, or might I damage the engine by driving with this issue? Thanks.

I'll try to keep this brief. I will likely be moving to Southern-Europe and will need to form new relationships with new doctors. Now, what from what I've been advised - they told me they want everything since I have multiple issues (PTSD from war, Anxiety over loud bangs/sounds, fireworks, Phobia of small places..) had a couple of MRIs after my car being rear-ended as well. So is it as simple (I like in Mass) as emailing/calling them and asking me to send me all my records? I don't even know what records holds. Is it what things they diagnosed me with, blood results, my medication, my MRI results. Stuff like that? Does it cost anything? Any help is extremely appreciated. Thank you all!

After this question, I resolved to do what I could to change my situation. I'm struggling, but managing, to be less aware of my inner monologue and more focused on using new strategies for conversation. But it *is* still very much a conscious process. I feel an almost physical pressure to talk exclusively about myself, and exclusively about struggle. I have to force myself to ask follow-up questions, to laugh even when things are genuinely funny. It's so rare that the volume of my self-talk lowers and I'm able to enjoy interactions for what they are. [more inside]

In grade school, my friend read a children's book about a female allosaurus. "The basic story was that the allosaurus was extremely hungry and had to hunt other animals to feed itself, but she was also too old to catch any prey. So at the end the allosaurus starved to death. That was, literally, the plot. A dinosaur learns that life is cruel and then dies." Ring any bells?

Does anyone have a trash compactor? My brother is thinking of getting one to use to compress used clothes that he sends down to Guatemala. Does it just squeeze down things like milk cartons or does it really compact anything?
Interested in hearing from 1) adults who have suffered from mental health issues for most/major part of their lives (depression/schizophrenia in particular) and were persuaded* by family to seek help (aka go to a psychiatrist). 2) family of the adult who was suffering from mental health issues and recognised that something was off/not quite right/blatantly bizarre/had classic symptoms of mental health issues (isolation, hygiene, job loss, distorted thinking and more). Additional twist- the adult in question can't stand immediate family and is convinced they are "toxic". [more inside]

I'm asking as I just watched a live drama tv program where a young man's face was almost constantly contorted as if he was in the throes of crying but there were no tears. It reminded me of something I once heard a cop say regarding questioning a suspect who, also, sobbed very much over the death of a loved one but no tears were shed. The policeman said "No tears? Its fake." I know whenever I'm really emotionally over the edge I will cry with tears - I call that experience "crying" - is there another type?

I have read quite a few articles that state that there's no such thing as being bad at math, that often it is just the case that you haven't had a specific subject explained to you in a way that made sense to you, or that you just have to work harder at it. That resonates with me, but clearly there's a limit to that and I wonder what that limit is. [more inside]
I recently visited Seattle in the US and saw quite a number of rainbow flags and rainbows painted on pedestrian crossings in Capitol Hill. WTF? Did I just happen in the midst of LGBT land or is there another significance I missed?

Help identify this old SF short story about a small group of interstellar colonists (maybe one or two dozen). The colonists (maybe explorers) identities and personal details were kept secret from the people on earth. I'm pretty sure I read it in a paperback anthology but it might have been in a magazine and it would have been at least 20 years ago, more likely 30. The story is probably even older. Gotcha spoiler under the fold. [more inside]

Help me find audiobooks I can listen to while playing pokemon. The best "page turners" that aren't too difficult to follow along with while also paying attention to the game. Female protagonists (hopefully). "The Girl on the Train" and "Gone Girl" are serviceable examples of what I am looking for. Not interested so much in stuff related to the military. The main criteria is that it is a page turner. And available as an audiobook. Thanks!

The only perk of academia that really panned out for me was the sabbatical. I earned a year without teaching or service and it was largely productive and glorious. It's over now. Not surprisingly, heading back to regular academic life sucks. Lots of things are exactly the same (my office still doesn't have windows and it still does have cockroaches) and some things are worse in terms of working conditions, colleague behavior, and academic bureaucracy. Please tell me what you did to make returning from sabbatical not feel like returning to prison after a glorious parole . [more inside]

I am 21 and I have never had a boyfriend. I've gotten to the point where I stare at other couples and start feeling depressed/sad. I do not really like the idea of online dating. I feel like anyone could easily find a significant other using a dating app and plus, you never know if you will get along with the person when you actually meet them. I'm looking for help in thinking through the ethical reasoning, as an organization I'm involved in is trying to develop an official position on this.

In 2005, one of the world's largest video game developers/publishers published an AAA computer/video game which appears to contain photographs I took and displayed on one of my websites which were copied directly and obviously into the game as textures. I just discovered the situation this year. Would it be likely that a lawyer could do anything about this in terms of securing payment/recognition/??? for this use of my copyrighted photographs? Some time, probably in the 1970's, my mother read a trilogy of science-fiction novels. They were written by a woman author, and were about a team of space explorers. One thing that stood out about them was that all of the crew received training that divided them into "specialists" or "generalists" in whatever their chosen field was. And that's all we know. She doesn't recall ever seeing anything else by the same author, and remembers that the titles were fairly standard spacey stuff.

Can anyone tell me what the acceptance rate for New York University's Tisch School of the Arts drama program is? If historical information is available, I'd be looking for it around 1991 -- if not, modern-day is fine. I have already found NYU's university-wide acceptance rate, but that data's not useful for me in this case.
I seem to be terrible at interviewing for jobs. I attribute most of this to anxiety around being evaluated, as I always freeze up and my mind goes blank. I think my anxiety makes me come off as timid as well. I've never, EVER, gotten a job from a formal interview process. All of my full time jobs I've obtained via temping; Clients realize that I am an excellent employee despite poor first impressions and hire me permanently. I'm hoping that I can get some recommendations for places to get married in either Devon or Somerset in England. Me and my girlfriend are hoping to get married in March-April 2017. About six weeks ago, a friend/ex-fwb wrote a facebook message to me that made me uncomfortable - it sexualized our friendship and didn't respect the boundaries I had set for it. This was after a few times when I had told him he was going too far, and I finally laid into him. 4 weeks later, he committed suicide. I have so many weird feelings about this, and I want advice about processing the death of someone and the guilt I feel about my last interactions with him. [more inside]

Until then I am hoping to find some place in Boston that has a chef that loves food as much as him! It's for a birthday celebration but doesn't need to be fancy or amazing service or anything - just terrific, inventive food. Do I have to go to New York or is there something here in Massachusetts?
I'm in the midst of a job search. I have an interview with Company A scheduled early the week after next. I have a ginormous Rosemary bush which I need to trim back to manageable amounts (at the moment it covers our path, which is obviously not ideal). I like Rosemary with lamb, but theres limited variations on that. Are there any recipes where Rosemary might not be the obvious thing to use? Does it freeze? Any other non-obvious uses? I've offered it to neighbours but it doesnt seem to be a thing amongst my mainly Asian/Afro-Carribean neighbours, but if there's a way of giving it away I'm all for it!

I spend a lot of time singing to myself while doing housework or knitting and so would prefer to learn arrangements that can be easily and satisfyingly sung without accompaniment. Thank you!
Started making a very spicy pasta sauce and ended up going to the movies. Now I have something resembling very hot salsa but with the herbs of pasta sauce. How do I salvage this? [more inside]
What are the weird, pebbled round things washing up in their hundreds on Devon and Cornwall beaches, as reported here? (Daily Mail link, sorry.)
After purchasing the Gawker Media assets, Univision will be shutting Gawker (as in the site) down in the next week. I have enjoyed reading the news, political coverage, and the championing of progressive causes in Gawker's often cutting, but humorous tone. SO! Where to next? [more inside]
I'm looking for books with nerdy protagonists, especially academically inclined nerds. Any genre, though I'm especially interested in fiction about the real life of a nerd. I'm interested in middle grade, YA, and adult. It can be mystery, fantasy, or science fiction. Examples of what I'm looking for: I enjoy Flavia de Luce's interest in chemistry in the series by Alan Bradley. As far as realistic fiction goes, I like the style of the Princess Diaries though Mia's not as nerdy as what I'm looking for. I'm particularly interested in protagonists who like math. Thanks!
I failed the Google. I need sources on "everyday" stuff as it would have been experienced in Lombardy, around 1600. Lots of different household types and social classes. I know this is super niche but I've seen some history buff types on here before so... maybe? [more inside]

I'm not a gamer, I don't have a console, I do have a laptop, I've been stress eating because of the US election, and I need something to do for a couple hours at a time here and there to get my mind off of this dumpster fire that isn't "eating my weight in ice cream while weeping." But I know nothing about current games out there. The absolute snowflakiest game recommendation request within. [more inside]

You can view the equipment here. I took this photo of some old equipment embedded in the bank of Crane Creek in Crane, Missouri. I'm wondering if it might relate to the numerous tomato canning plants that operated there in the 1920s and 30s. It appears to be possibly a conveyor belt (?) They used those in the factories, I know.
My friend has a poor pup that's allergic to just about every kind of meat. Prepared vegan dog food exists, but it's insanely expensive, so I'm interested in seeing if any of you have some vegan dog food recipes that she can make at home. I would be most interested in large-scale recipes that she can cook, portion out, and then freeze until needed. Thanks!
I get how a digital restoration of an older film might destroy aspects of a 35/70mm film's look (grain and sharpness in particular) but if a film has already gone through a digital intermediate process shouldn't the DCP look just like the source the director/colorists were working with? What is the benefit of printing back to 35mm and projecting that? Ignoring aberrations like scratches, flicker or cigarette burns is there a difference in color, sharpness, anything of that sort which would make projecting on film preferable?
She doesn't need any more Star Wars trivia books. She's gifted, reads at an adult level, is super-knowledgeable about science- especially natural sciences-, but hey, she's just turning 11 and is a bit immature. She doesn't need any graphic sex scenes or horrendous gore. I'd love to find her some books that are really well-written and that will challenge her to think.

How do committees of adjustment and variance to zoning laws work? I'm particularly interested in Toronto's committee. A developer has submitted a proposal for a property near me with some concerning variance requests. Some neighbours have started a letter-writing campaign, but i have the sense that the committee probably has formal criteria it uses to decide and the developer will know these while my neighbours don't and thus their arguments aren't likely to be effective. Explain to me how this works so that if I choose to join in I can do so more effectively. [more inside]

What is the typical gap between when a pay period ends and the checks/deposits are sent? I think it has been 3-4 day in most of my jobs. Is that about right? Are there any notable exceptions? I have to book the trip now so I am trying to be as informed as possible.
TL;DR: How do you get rid of a toxic roommate when they literally have nowhere to go, no one else willing to take them in, and no money to find a place of their own? IF it gets ugly, violent, I'll call my friend who lives in the complex and get help with immediate removal... but I don't want to make this guy homeless unless he becomes a real threat. I'm trying to think of clear ways to communicate boundaries and deadlines, such as giving X amount of time to save up deposits for a place of his own now that he has a job again. That's the kind of advice I need please. [more inside]

On the last episode ("Coda") of Series 3 of the ITV show Endeavour, which is set in 1967, a clearly queer-coded character (Jerome Hogg) makes a reference to the famous "snails and oysters" scene from the 1960 movie Spartacus, saying to Morse of a (presumably attractive) young man whom he has just told to run along, "Alas, I fancy, a lover of oysters, for all my blandishments." And I have questions (that are NOT about what that means, no)! [more inside]

I'm looking for horror recommendations (defined as broadly as you wish). I'd like books with a deeper resonance, the kind you keep thinking about after you finish, but books that make you feel as well. My favorite writers are Shirley Jackson, Peter Straub, Caitlin R. Kiernan; I don't care as much for Lovecraft and the more cosmic stuff. Ideally this would be a book you would describe as being emotionally moving or compassionate as well as creepy. The further off the beaten path, the better.

However, I make about $250/month in cash (in addition to my part-time minimum-wage job for which I get a W-2) that I do not report to IRS because then I will have to pay self-employment tax on it and fill out a bunch of forms for what is really just a friend paying me to help them out for maybe 12 hours a month. If I tell the food stamps people about this monthly cash income, will they share that information with the IRS? So far I have been dealing with this by just not applying for food stamps, and with careful spending I am OK, but as I notice myself obsessing over tiny things in the grocery store this starts to feel ridiculous.
People of MeFi, I need some advice. Recently – the last week or so I've really noticed and started tracking it, but probably longer than that overall – I've noticed that my blood pressure and bpm have been acting a bit crazy. [more inside]

You're cooking dinner for someone, in your tiny kitchen. You're a pretty good cook, and they're not, so you are occasionally asking them to do simple tasks ("Can you put this in the fridge for me?") but you're doing most of the work. What is the nicest, quickest, least irritable way to say "Can you please sit down, because when you hover by the sink or the oven you're in my way?" [more inside]
I just read this article that says July 2016 was Earth's hottest month in recorded history. And the same article notes that: "NASA's five hottest months on record are July 2016, July 2011, July 2015, July 2009 and August 2014. Only July 2015 was during an El Nino. Records go back to 1880." The data relate to the global average temperature, not just the parts that are having summer in July. So why are the global averages being pulled up especially during the northern hemisphere's summer? [more inside]

My 3-year-old daughter loves the Nerdy Nummies YouTube channel. It's a baking show with a bubbly host who makes a different pop-culture themed treat every week. I like that she is watching a show about a real person making stuff (instead of yet another cartoon), and it even inspires us to do projects in real life. I am looking for recommendations for similar shows, but for other types of projects she would like, such as papercrafts or painting. [more inside]

My dog has been on a hunger strike for a few weeks now (not atypical for him during the hottest part of the summer, but this is getting ridiculous). I just put down $100 on a new pot that's 4-quart capacity, and oval-shaped. It seems that before I got it, every single recipe called for an enameled cast iron pot for a braised this and a braised that. (Sometimes even bread!) So, please share with me your absolute favorite recipes that have to be made in a cast iron pot. I'm already eyeing a lamb shank recipe with pomegranate molasses.
I live in a city of roughly half a million people, Glasgow (Scotland). I haven't worked in a long time due to being a caregiver in a relationship that's now ended. I have applied for and been given a place on a one-year Open University course (Certificate in Promoting Public Health). Is there a way to guesstimate the number of Glasgow-based junior health promotion jobs that come up in a year, or a way to describe this task so that I could outsource a couple of hours research to one of those sites where helpful freelancers might be a better job than me for an acceptable cost? It's a pretty important question to me so finding the answer would potentially be pretty valuable to me, before I get fully committed and start the course. [more inside]

Hola Mefi!, My 55 inch Vizio suddenly stopped turning on recently. The pain in the butt thing is that the only way to get it back on is to unplug it for ~90 minutes. This isn't the usual sleep question and I've had a hard time finding answers. Basically I will sleep for a few hours, then wake up for anywhere from 30 min to a hour. Then I go back to sleep. I think you get my drift. I know I could do it myself with a pen and paper but maybe somebody out there has found it, done it or has a cleverer way to generate it.

It would have to be more cosmetic than structural, as that width is pretty much a given.
So Descartes got a lot of things right (and a lot of things wrong), but, arguably, he had vast impact on all science that came after him. He was successful. My work is all computer based (admin) and the software we used isn't very shortcut friendly, so I'm using the mouse all day. I've had to give up playing guitar (my favourite hobby) because it causes me too much pain to play. My aging kitty (as seen here) now gets multiple medications daily, most of which I can sprinkle over a bit of tuna slurry, and she's happy to eat. But she has an occasional pill that ruins tuna for her, and it has also ruined pill pockets for her, so now I'm at a loss for how to give it to her without the traditional approach of poking it down her throat. This is horrible for both of us. Please share any tips you might have for other tricks to make this easy and painless!

I'm planning on building loft beds for my kids. They have ceiling fans smack in the middle of their ceilings. For obvious reasons, kid hijinks in a loft bed and a ceiling fan spinning at dangerous speeds just inches from their faces is a bad combination. And I hate the ceiling fans anyway. So...I'm trying to crowdsource ideas on what to put in place of the ceiling fans. I can't really just remove them and put one of those flat plates over it, since the ceiling fans are also the main light for the room. I need to replace them with something. I'm looking for style ideas for: 1. A light source 2. That can be installed in the center of the ceiling 3. That doesn't hang down too far. Any ideas?

The note says failure to comply, within the 2.5 hour timeframe, will be a breech of my lease and grounds for eviction. Is that legal? (I'm in Los Angeles, if that's germane.)

There was a locally quasi-famous Chicago band that played in the late '90s. It seemed like they were always at street fairs. They were good.

Would it be OK to call later this afternoon, before 4 PM? Call early Monday morning? Thanks.

My blood tests came back low in iron. I was surprised as I eat a good diet including lots of iron rich foods. My iron supplement (Spatone) info leaflet recommends leaving a 30-45 minute gap between taking the supplement and meals. It says carbonated drinks (phosphates) can interfere with iron absorption. I usually drink about 2 litres of carbonated water a day. Do I need to stop this completely? Could it be preventing me from absorbing iron from my diet? How much carbonated drink is too much carbonated drink in this context?

I'm familiar with the influence of the French New Wave on American cinema (the New Hollywood being the primary example) and have seen where many of its members took their respective styles but I was hoping someone could help me understand the direction the whole of French cinema took in the decades following the Nouvelle Vague. Perhaps their radicalism shows in the following years, or maybe French cinema just fizzled, maybe the movement had a broader impact than it did here in the US-- looking for some sort of explanation along those lines.

I’m seeing a pattern in my life where I get very frustrated when I have to pick up the slack, or am inconvenienced in terms of time or money by people on a repeated basis. These are non-optional relationships (relatives, colleagues etc). Occasional situations involving people who are generally considerate of time/money/effort do not bother me. What I’m talking about is feeling ground down and at times enraged by repeated instances of mistakes/inconveniences, last minute schedule changes that impact me etc. by a select few people . Due to product-recall and corporate-policy fun, we have the opportunity to replace a 16-year-old basic model Maytag dishwasher with a brand-new equivalent 2016 model at no cost to us. However, a quick Google revealed that Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006 and promptly shut down the factory, moving manufacturing out of the US. The current one is showing its age a bit (and there's that recall issue) but in other ways is a champ. So.... good or bad idea? [more inside]

Can I improve on the taste of a lobster roll? Is there more than lobster, mayo and bun? I am suspecting that what I love about the lobster that I have to crack out of the shell is the butter that is served with it. Lobster with butter: delicious. Lobster roll with mayo: just ok. Next time I am going to try drooling the roll with butter, but can you suggest another flavor enhancer?

Over-ear is a must, these will be shared headsets. [more inside]

My husband met Hillary Clinton in 1992 as FLOAK. He was 24, living with HIV, and she was really kind and considerate of him. He would like to send her a letter, with a few caveats. He does not want it to "go viral", or even public, but he would like to get it into her hands or the hands of someone higher up in the organization. Anyone know where I could send his letter where it might have a chance of being seen? Thanks.

A new friend and I are spending Sunday without our babies in San Francisco. We are excited! But neither of us really know the city, and also we are used to doing child-centered things like going to parks or libraries or whatever, so our brains are mush. What do adults do in San Francisco besides the deYoung museum? Looking for offbeat, fun suggestions that don't totally break the bank. Thank you!

I have been tasked with finding a tailor in or very near to Tribeca in New York City. They ideally are open at 7:00am or open until 7:00pm. And this tailor can take in the waist of a pair of pants without making one of the rear pockets off center to the seam. Chinatown is fine as long as it's west of the Canal street 456/NQR station. Other Manhattan neighborhoods considered if the work is really spectacular and inexpensive. [more inside]
I am in a tight spot. I know the relationship must end and have been honest about that with her, but I’m having a hard time figuring out practically what to do after this, as her reaction to my attempts to break up have been volatile. Ultimately I would like us to split and to live together long enough for her to find somewhere else to live, but from her behaviour so far, I am concerned that she is not stable enough to carry through with that plan. But I am desperate to avoid the alternatives - either escalating things to the point her family or even police are involved, which would obviously traumatise her, or with me just leaving the house with no future contact, which I feel could lead to serious depression as she has deep fears of abandonment. The latter option is also difficult as it is my parent’s home. What’s most frustrating is that, depending on her mood, she herself can see that we are not suited and need to move on. What do I do? [more inside]
I can't get this dance song out of my head, but I can't find it anywhere. I don't recall it being a particular hit. My memory of the chorus is "Come with me, tonight's the night, come with me, tonight's the night, can't you see I can't do it alone, I wanna be with you tonight". My memory of the video clip was that it was in black and white and set in a club, with various people lip-synching the song.

I feel like some enterprising soul must have made an app like this.

My brother is generally a caring, generous, talented, and thoughtful guy. He is also almost the definition of "stuck in a rut" - partially due to bad luck (recession), but probably more due to impulsive/emotional behavior - moodiness, impulse buys, little white lies, throwing his smartphone when angry, got a DUI not long ago, etc. It's hard to watch because he works hard (if very disorganized), is at times brilliantly self-aware. But can't seem to find his footing, and still lives with my parents. [more inside]

I've depended on my ear all my life to play music. I learn new pieces by listening, playing back what I've heard, and then slowly correcting my errors in listening by reading the notes in spots I think I'm unclear on. In the past it was a cool party trick, but I want to stop using this approach because it slows down the rate at which I pick up new pieces, it's sloppy, and without a teacher these days, it's difficult to pick up my numerous errors. I am also awful at sight reading. [more inside]

I vaguely remember reading sometime in the last year or two an anecdote about President Obama's attitudes about military intervention. This was probably in a long form piece from the New Yorker, Atlantic, etc. Obama and advisors were considering intervention in the Middle East (Syria? Libya? I've been googling without success, which makes me think I have one or two of the details wrong.
