August 2009 Archives
I recently moved into a 4 unit apartment building. Across the hall lives a single older woman who is proving to be quite the busy body. The girl downstairs from her and she are friends. The young woman that lives down stairs works for some sort of cash advance operation and when my Daughter got a ride home from a co-worker tonight, this neighbor of mine saw and recognized the driver as someone who borrowed from the cash advance agency, but never paid back, and verbally accosted her in the driveway of the apt. building. It was 8:30 at night and she was wearing a nightgown. I found this very unprofessional, and honestly irritating. What I want to know is how can I handle this without it becoming a building war. I've only lived here a month, but her bulldog approach was very insulting to my guest and very inappropriate. The situation could get sticky since the neighbors are pals. Ugh...what to do!
How can I learn about and collect images of the seed signs that are posted along large agricultural fields?
Agriculture Industry Filter: After a recent drive across the mid-western United States, I became very intrigued by the variety of signs along the road that seemed to be trademark or branding markers for the types of seeds being grown in the various fields. (1) Does anyone know the purpose of these? (2) Seen a collection of them online? or (3) Know how one might properly refer to them in order to go about collecting images of them?

Just a curiosity - why do you think that the overwhelming trend in rock 'n' roll / pop style music with male lead vocals is for the male vocalist to sing in a tenor / high tenor / contratenor or higher range - viz. Steve Perry, Triumph, etc.? I just wonder because that isn't the trend so much in other popular music - blues, R'n'B, country, traditional folk, etc. It's simply puzzled me for years and I wonder if MeFi has any theories?

This sounds like it should be the easiest question in the world to solve, but I'm having some serious issues: I remember, years ago, owning some compilation CD on which that band Soul Asylum covered "Bird on a Wire." Google confirms for me that this did indeed happen because there are pages and pages of guitar tabs for this version, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what album this song was on. Also, if you can find someplace online where I can listen to this song, I would be eternally grateful.

Sheep, Goats, Mini-cows? I have about two acres of fenced-in land in Ohio, I already own two goats (one fainting goat, and an angora) and some chickens. What should my next purchase be, the more creative the better.

I've worked a lot the past few months (but will be done in a few weeks) and have noticed a few physical changes. Could stress cause these conditions? (1) When I wash my hair in the shower, I lose a couple dozen hairs down the drain (although I don't seem to be balding) (2) My right eye has started twitching several times an hour (I can feel it but my friends can't see the twitching). (3) I've gone from about 5 to about 50 grey hairs the past year. I'm a 24 year old male.

I was playing around with a keyboard at a Guitar Center that had an auto-harmonize feature. Below a certain note pressing a key would play a chord instead of a single tone. What was interesting was that playing chromatically (white and black keys) it played chords that retained a firm sense of key (C major) - if you jumped around randomly or did chromatic runs it didn't sound like there were a bunch of modulations taking place. What formula do you think it used to do this?

I have a sister that I finally cut off when a friend of mine revealed she had stolen $400 from him years before, as she has done to her siblings. Her daughter was 10 at the time and was very hurt that I disappeared. At the time I felt that it would only make her life worse to explain that I left because I didn't trust her mother. Now that she is 25 I would like to contact her again and at least apologize and tell her I love her, but is that best for her? (BTW she lives with her father after a bitter divorce and has the some of the same feelings about her mother as I do. But I don't want to open up that wound, for sure.) Now that she's an adult, should I contact her again?

Any free A2DP Bluetooth driver options for Windows XP? I have a Sony stereo which has a bluetooth option on it which allows you to play music through it wirelessly. After buying a simple bluetooth dongle for my laptop, I was able to pair with the stereo but was not able to browse for the blueooth service which facilitates that function. (basically, the stereo becomes like a pair of wireless headphones) So after a little research I discovered I needed to have an A2DP compatible device. According to the A2DP website, there were two programs I could download, one called BlueSoleil and the other called Widcomm. Widcomm didnt work but BlueSoleil did manage to allow me to do it succesfuly. Only thing is, BlueSoleil is a whole package of stuff that costs $30. (trial version limits output to 2mb). The only thing I need is the A2DP part. Im not sure exactly what BlueSoleil did but its clear that the problem wasnt with my dongle or its compatibility. So, can anyone explain what exactly BlueSoleil did that allowed me to access my stereo's bluetooth service and also if there is any way to do this for free?

Over the last few years a couple of partners and myself have been building a small business that tries to make money using computers to trade in the stock market. Technically, we do black-box prop trading. Its been an uphill climb these past few years, but we are now at the point where we are considering hiring someone. This person will be a programmer/developer that will help with existing projects and help us grow in new directions. We are currently faced with a big dilemma. Whomever we hire will have to be given full access and will be exposed to our trade secrets. This kind of business lends itself to the temptation of impropriety. This person could take what we have and either sell it or assuming they break the barrier to entry use it for themselves. They could probably do this without getting caught as well, with the effect being that our secrets lose their value. [more inside]

My Maxtor Basics 1 terabyte external USB 2.0 drive no longer mounts. I have been through all the usual stuff with tech support (including disk management and device management) and I've tried it on multiple computers. Although the green light comes on when it's plugged into USB, apart from that it's not talking to the computer. There has been no strange noise, clicking, smoke or smell. Maxtor tech support say it's a failed drive. A data recovery company I phoned said it's probably damaged firmware but the data on the disk is probably safe. I'm nervous about sending it to a data recovery company because I seem to be looking at about GBP £179 minimum or maybe many, many hundreds more. Is it likely to be a matter of simply soldering something here or replacing something there, ie a job that I could take to a local geek? Or should I be looking to take this to a major data recovery centre? I'm in London, UK.

Yet-Another-Bookfilter - I'm trying to find an 80s-ish sci-fi book that I want to think was called "The War of Forgetting". The premise was something along the lines of: two warring factions get devices, described as "battery powered, about the size of a pocket calculator, with three antennae" which can take large cubic sections of space ( hundreds of feet on a side ) and "store" them in the device, removing them from our reality. The problem is that when something is removed, people's memories of the area/thing are removed as well - so everyone forgets what was removed and why. Later in the book, as reality gets more swiss-cheesed, people try randomly restoring these blocks and the results aren't pretty. I've been trying to find this book off and on for years, now I come to you good folk for help. Yes, it's somewhat ironic that I can't remember the title. :-)

MattressHackingFilter: I recently upgraded from a fairly firm queen sized mattress to a king-sized soft pillow-top (Simmons Beautyrest). Recommendations for an adjustable ergonomic keyboard arm/tray? This seems to be such a niche market that there is little to no advice to find through searching. There are some about desks but that's about it. So, does anyone here have recommendations?

The AC of my Mercedes Benz 2002 stopped working so we took it to a well known Used Car Dealership for a check up. They charge me $150.00 just for the check up and gave me an estimate of about $3,000 to fix it (basically they said all the system had to be replace it). I didn’t want to spend that kind of money so we took it one of those ‘basic repair shop’ chains and they fixed it by changing a $25.00 sensor. I want my $150.00 back, I live in Florida and don't know if I am entitled to a refund? If I am, what is the best way to ask for it? I’m pissed at them but I want to behave civilized and effective.

I am a type 1 [insulin-dependent] diabetic, and sometimes at night, when I haven't eaten enough to cover the insulin I took that evening, I 'bottom out': my blood sugar goes down very low and I wake up bathed in sweat and must go searching for orange juice. My question is about this: The nighttime sweat from low blood sugar just... stinks. It is powerfully rank sweat, as though I had not washed in many days. My partner agreed, he has noticed that it is different from any other sweat I sweat. "You NEVER smell like that any other time. It's a low blood sugar thing." Yet only at night! I also become clothes-soakingly sweaty if low blood sugar happens during the day, BUT it seems 'normal', the same as when I exercise. Can anyone tell me why this might be? So first of all, I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with my car, but whatever it is is definitely not good. I was driving the other day when the engine started making this very loud clanking/grinding noise. Apparently I hadn't checked my oil level and it was basically gone. After filling it up with Oil, the noise is still there, but much quieter. So I'm thinking I might need a whole new engine. The thing is, I found a nearly identical car on Craigslist for $1750, which would probably be just a few hundred more then a new engine, and I could just drive the thing until I get around to repairing my old one. On the other hand, I don't really want to spend that much in a panic. The car is a 1997 Toyota Tercel. [more inside]

After signing the lease and paying the deposit, the owner is asking me to sign a release saying that I know that the door buzzer system does not work and will not be fixed. Is a buzzer something that I'll wish that I had, or will I be fine just having people call when they need to be let in? The buzzer wasn't mentioned either way before I signed the lease (but I saw that the building had a buzzer system without thinking to check it). I wouldn't want to try to get out of the lease and have to redo my apartment search, but it does seem a bit weird not being warned about this in advance. Do I have any recourse? Can I force them to fix it or to give me some sort of discount on my rent, or should I just let it slide? [more inside]

Is there any research that seeks to quantify from year to year the degree to which humanity has grown more civilized or more depraved? Seems like futurists would do this, but I don't know where to begin to look. Negative factors would include crime, war, human trafficking, starvation, preventable disease. Positive factors would be access to affordable or universal health care, some form of freedom or democracy with a complementary bill of rights. Trying to remember the name of a TV show from my adolescence (1974 - 1981). It was an office drama in which sex roles were reversed. Women had all the power; women were the bosses, made the money, etc. Men were in support positions and were sex objects. The show was syndicated, and, in Boston, at least, was on a UHF station. Any ideas?

My mother would like to get on Facebook at some point in the future. I've neither encouraged nor discouraged her to do so, and wouldn't really have a problem with her on Facebook re: my profile or anything like that. The problem is that she was a former high school teacher and some of her old students have created a fan club page for her. It's mostly harmless fun, and the creator of the page actually posted some really nice things about my mom. For fun they have been posting photoshopped pics of her face on funny pictures (making her a rap star, etc.), but nothing out of bounds or all that offensive has been uploaded. And while I don't really have a problem with the page, there are two things that have me a bit upset. [more inside]

Suggest a model for a money-making, or at least self-sufficient, website dedicated to a region or small city something like "Mayberry Online." Probably advertising driven, dedicated to news, events, listings, but with active forums for 'consumer gripes,' local politics, advice columns, restaurant reviews, arts, sports, health, pets & wildlife. Think 'city paper' or alternative press but online, with an active Craigslist component. Any thing like that out there? Suggestions on website design/creation/start-up consultants would be an added bonus. Links please to worthy existing sites that fit the bill. And, TIA
