I am helping a friend with his 2010-era Sony VAIO laptop running Windows 7. It's slow. He is unable to do a clean reinstall because he does not have original CDs or product keys for Windows or any of his software. We spent some time with CCleaner disabling startup items, etc., and we uninstalled a bunch of bloatware. It's still slow. What are some intermediate steps, between CCleaner and a clean reinstall, that we can take to speed things up? Thank you!
For the last two weeks, I've often noticed the sensation of my heart skipping beats. I'll be seeing my doctor soon, but in the meantime, how can I relax? [more inside]
HI am producing a TED-like event themed "Response" later this year. The speakers I find will present examples of successful large scale logistical events during times of crisis. Examples of this include: Dunkirk evacuation, The Fall of Saigon, The Berlin Airlift, And United Airlines Flight 232 (smaller scale) [more inside]
About 3 minutes into this video, behind the speaker, you can see an American flag with perhaps 43 or so stars. What is this flag? [more inside]
Which sci-fi book series, ideally with many books, should I read next? I've read and liked Asher's Polity books, Banks' Culture books, Reynolds' Revelation Space series, Leckie's Radch trilogy, and Corey's Expanse books. [more inside]
I don't know what to expect from mature relationships. I had one five year relationship and one nine month relationship since maturing and I didn't have good relationship models as a child so I'm not sure I am calibrated well. I'm afraid that my marriage is truly terrible, but I'm also afraid that much of the weight of it is fairly universal for hetero male-female marriage. And I just need a reality check. [more inside]
I'm having a karaoke party for my birthday. I'm looking for games that are good for a group of 10 ish people (give or take) that serve as some other entertainment besides the singing. I want it to be casual and not forced, like a thing people can do if they're not singing or watching. [more inside]
I got rid of all of my furniture and am now moving to New York from Toronto. I can bring two suitcases. I don't have much stuff. What's my best (i.e. most reliable, punctual, and cheap) freight shipping option? [more inside]
My computer is low on storage, so what is an online option? I want to get abusive texts off my phone, but keep them as potential evidence "just in case" I ever need to bring charges in the future. Is there a cloud-based option? [more inside]
There's a million answers on the internet (and here) for how to reheat pizza without making the crust soggy. But there's a certain kind of pizza - thin crust with lots of mushrooms - where the moisture from the mushrooms makes the crust all soggy when it's fresh, and it's perfect that way. When I reheat my pizza in the oven or on a skillet, the crust gets nice and crispy - just what I don't want. I don't have a microwave. How do I get my hot soggy pizza??
Next week I fly into Austin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday and catch the Texas Eagle Amtrak south at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, I get back into Austin at 9:30 a.m. and fly out at 1:30 p.m. Where is a good place between the airport and the Amtrak station to catch a late lunch and wander a bit on Wednesday? Where can I get a quick brunch on Saturday morning? [more inside]
My current phone is slowly falling apart so I'm in the market for a new(ish) one. I'll likely go second-hand since I can't afford something super current. What models should I look for? Apple and Android both welcome. [more inside]
You are not my dentist or endodontist. I have both of those. I have bruxitis and sleep with a night guard, but I don't always use it regularly. I am having a problem with a back left molar which had a root canal many years ago which seems like it might be cracked tooth syndrome. I am leaving on a two week vacation in ten days. How can I best time this with minimal risk? [more inside]
This sounds stupid but I used to have a huge creative department that'd give us beautiful options for presentations. I'm familiar with InDesign and enough to be dangerous, but it seems I can't find a stock image site that will provide full images (with or without the "stock image" stamp) so I can at least preview before I buy an $80 image for one slide in a 100+ page deck. Am I missing something or do big agencies just purchase the images and don't care about price? To be clear, I just need to make it look good internally and then purchase the images after they get approved. It is hard for me to figure out if a stock image is going to look good if I get a thumbnail from Adobe Stock.
This is an embarrassing "I should have cleaned this more often" scenario, but here we go. The microwave in our apartment sits over the range, and the bottom contains some lights and some standard range filters. (A setup like this.) Not knowing that I could slide the filters out, I unscrewed that whole bottom plate and took it off to see what's where. The grease buildup was... bad. I cleaned the filters with Easy-Off oven cleaner and am satisfied with how they came out, but that entire bottom portion of the microwave is still. So. Gross! [more inside]

In this fast moving world of digital devices with virtually endless storage, I can't help but wonder if there's something to the idea of getting an actual camera, with actual film, for my kid to be exposed to and see the process of taking pictures that is irreversible, finite, and focused and then getting a taste of the delayed gratification that comes with developing them. Bonus points for specific things to do/not do if your answer is yes. [more inside]
Coming back from vacation or an extended period of Fun is absolutely crushing. I am angry, sad, mentally unfocused (expected), and despondent. It makes me cry (no, seriously) and sometimes I do ill-advised things (like purchases) to help ease the pain. I am not unhappy in my everyday life, but what I experience post-vacation makes me never want to have fun again. Does anyone else feel this way? How do you cope? I am in Week 2 and feel empty.
My partner was previously on antidepressants and went off of them (unintentionally) when her insurance changed and her old doctor won't accept the new one. The permanent solution is to find a new PCP and get a new prescription, but she can't get an appointment for at least a month with any of the doctors we've called. Does anyone know of any alternative options to deal with this more quickly? [more inside]

I work in screen printing, and have worked for this company for 3 years. I got my foot in the door by taking a very low paying job, without a degree. In one year they promoted me into the position of scheduling both the press, all of the work for the artists and juggling the responsibilities of running the art dept. without actually calling it management. When I was promoted I was given a raise to twelve dollars an hour. In my area, that's barely making it, and fifteen would be 'average' for this type of work. Since then I have not received any further raises despite one 'stellar' job review. We do not get scheduled reviews, or raises, or even much of a chance to discuss a raise. Besides the easy answer of going elsewhere, what would you do? [more inside]
Small, local restaurant chain agreed to pay wage theft penalties in the millions of dollars (unpaid overtime, missed breaks, etc). My husband doesn't want to eat there anymore because of the worker abuse. If every customer does the same, the staff will be abused again without tips, fewer hours and maybe job loss. What's the correct approach?

Frozen lo mein was with me in the car as I ran errands after work. Outside temp in the low 90s. The car wasn't off for more than 5 minutes at a time. When I got home to put it in the freezer, I did notice that it felt not quite as cold but not warm, as if it had partially thawed. This is PF Chang's shrimp lo mein kit. So, will it still be good when I cook it?
When I was a college student, my dorm had a yearly special event where the dining hall (Aramark) provided frozen pizza dough so we could bake our own pizzas. The dough came in flat rounds, not a ball or tube, so all you had to do was thaw, put on toppings, and bake, no rolling out required. Also, this dough was not par-baked; it was completely raw once you thawed it out. Does anyone make pizza dough like this that is commercially available?

I'm doing a radio show on the theme of Altered States and am looking for suggestions. Especially obscure stuff, including recordings of rituals or chants or whatnot. Of course I'll include a few drug/insanity songs (eight miles high, manic depression, drone music) and some recordings by Timothy Leary, Stanislof Grof and Terrence McKenna, and the theme to "Altered States" but beyond that, I'm coming up short on Youtube. Any suggestions?
I am a gal (69) who "met" a great far-away guy online "dating". We shared a 7-month FB messenger and voice companionship: several times weekly, often all day long. Trajectory was fuzzy but we grew a deep warm connection. He just died suddenly. Close friends support me here but I'm flattened. Connection and any potential gone. How do I mourn/grieve a man I never met, whose friends/family don't know me and vice versa? (Other than FB.) Please respond if this resonates.
My daughter is looking for her next book to read! Sci Fi she really likes: Douglas Adams, Dr. Who, Stranger Things and Welcome to Night Vale. We’re looking for more science fiction writing, preferably with a humorous element (dark humor is totally fine), and of course anything with a female protagonist would be a bonus. Series or standalone, novel or short story, as long as it’s a rewarding read! Thanks for your help!

From what I've been able to find, U.S. farmers plow under much of their unsold crops and the government pays subsidies to them in many cases. I know Trump has set aside $12B for subsidies as a result of the tariffs he has imposed. Why can't at least some of that food be distributed to food-insecure people, at least regionally? Is it just because of the expense of moving the food? Is it because most of it is feed-grade? Or are there other reasons? Thank you.
I have dental anxiety, and usually manage it by picking a well-reviewed office/dentist and then just going along with whatever they say, because left to my own devices I'd object to everything and never come back. I’m a pharmacist working for an insurance company. My job involves reviewing prior authorization cases, basically deciding whether or not to cover a non-formulary drug. It’s a pretty good position, allowing me to work from home (WFH), but it doesn’t have good job advancement potential. I recently interviewed for a WFH internal position that is the same pay rate but it has great potential for job advancement and looks great on resume. I heard from a reliable source that I’ll most likely be picked for the job. [more inside]

Hello! I am in Richmond, Virginia and I saw this sticker near a 7-11. Do you know who this is supposed to be? I've image-searched endlessly and can't find anything remotely like it. To me, it looks like a Futurama-ish version of a possibly real person. Many thanks.

I read a book a few years back but can't remember enough identifying information to look for it again. I'd like to re-read it and find other books by the author. Basically, the main character starts as a kind of Droog in a dystopic, post-nuclear city, leaves the urban area and remakes himself into a mystical demi-demigod with a mutant, simian friend. I believe it was written in the late 70s to early 80s and the author's last name started with an 'A.' [more inside]

I've had my IUD for nearly 5 years and haven't thought much about it. Yesterday I saw the Netflix documentary about botched insertion/removal of (or just generally harmful) medical devices "Bleeding Edge." The documentary insists that people within the pharmaceutical industry pushed Essure onto the market despite concerns that it could cause harm. [more inside]
With a scheduled performance review coming up, it has been suggested to ask ahead of time for a rate increase. What is the normal timing for this? The company has had some difficulties and for several years had a freeze on salaries. Currently working at the same rate for the last 3 years, with an excellent record and 12 years with the same company. Is asking for a 10G increase on 80G reasonable? Last increase was 5G.

We have a romantic history that has played out in nonstop conversation over several decades. Then this past year, we got serious. Most of our relationship takes place over daily email and phone calls since he lives in another country, and I live in the U.S. But we recently met up, and had a fabulous time. The trouble is only a few weeks after I got home, my partner suddenly wrote and said he doesn’t want to provide for me if I relocate to be with him. It turns out, he is counting on a possible inheritance to provide for me instead, and has been giving me advice to help make that happen, all of which he disclosed in his note. My long-distance partner is diagnosed with Aspergers and is currently dividing up his assets as a prelude to divorce. Can you give me your best guess as to how he is reasoning? [more inside]

Sometimes a central element or character from a story becomes a figure of speech that is used as a shorthand to describe similar things and situations. Examples of this include ugly duckling, Gordian knot, Achilles heel, and Trojan horse. When you use one of these phrases to describe something, they bring along with them the full story that they come from. All the examples I can think of are noun phrases, though there may be some that aren't. What are these called? The closest term I've found is metonym, but is there something more specific? On my daily commute back home, I drive past ~15 gas stations. In my country, gas prices change daily and vary a bit from one station to the next. So that got me thinking: What would be the best method to decide whether to fill your tank on the station you're currently in front of or lose the current price forever and take your chances on the remaining stations? Assume each station sets their daily price randomly (but they are all within a $1 range), and we start with the reference of the price we paid last time. Note: I can easily keep track of the lowest price on my way to work and then fill up on the way home, but I am more interested in the math problem than the practical issue.

My parents are in their 80’s and managing to remain pretty independent, but will probably need an increased level of support in the near future. While it seems like a better option, I want to help lay out all the possibilities. [more inside]
Three months ago, my husband’s job led us to move from a mining town in Ontario to Montreal. This is the latest in a very long series of moves I have made in my life, and instead of getting better at managing them I seem to be getting worse. My dad, 60-plus, wants to get in to editing family videos that he has taken on a camcorder. Looking for advice on- Minimum spec for a laptop to do handle this (ideally someone saying "buy this laptop for £x and it'll do a decent job"). What software should he use- does windows have a bundled video editing program as standard that would do the job, or would a modest purchase of some bespoke software be so user friendly that it is worth the price? (I'd rather stick with Windows rather than Mac because of price, and because I'll no doubt be the helpdesk for any issues, and I'm more familiar with Windows than Mac.) Topline budget of £500 for laptop (and software if reqd) seem reasonable? [more inside]
I need to line up counseling to improve communication and problem-solving skills between two adults. I was supposed to have some Very Important Papers couriered (via Fedex International Priority) to me today. Apparently the delivery person didn't bother trying the buzzer on my building, so they left a door tag telling me I can sign for my package at the nearest Fedex location... tomorrow afternoon. This usually isn't a problem, but in this case it is very much not ideal. Is there anything I can do to try and get these papers sooner?

I remember seeing a comedy parody of a commercial in the early 2000s. It seems like it could have been a In Living Color sketch. I had our 30 y/o tub reglazed 10 months ago. For a few months it looked great, then we got a little fleabite, then we had lots of fleabites. Now it looks as my husband puts it "like a Motel 6 tub". Our tub is our only shower, so it gets daily use. Is there a way to get it reglazed that is more enduring, or do we need to replace the tub? (If the latter, we just installed new tile surround - is there a way to replace the tub without destroying our beautiful 10 month old tile?)
My basement bathroom floor has 12” square slate tiles, and for a few in front of the shower stall, I get a disturbingly hollow sound when I tap on them. I glass ball hummingbird feeder that hangs from filament off a 10 inch hook on the side of my house in front of my library window. Ants quickly figured out the path from the side of the house out the hook down the filament and into the feeder. As this old answer suggests, I've put vasaline on the filament to repel the ants, but when temperatures hit the low seventies, like they did last night, the vasoline hardens and boom, ant soup for breakfast. What should I do about keeping the ants out of the hummingbird feeder on cooler summer nights?

I need to rehome an adult cat in Palm Desert by Monday or my mom will be evicted. The Humane Society of the Desert and every other place we can google is full. Our friends can't help. Who do we give this cat to and what do we do? Fighting the landlord is not an option and neither is moving, but driving a couple counties over is.
This is also motivated by a suspicion that I will very much need to be doing something active if I don’t want to completely lose my mind. [more inside]

I really want a Thai soccer team Wild Boars jersey modeled off of their media appearance. The question is--how to get one and not be exploitative of anyone involved (or if that's even possible). Preferably how to get in touch with the artist, how to get any money made to the team and their families, or to the family of the Thai diver who gave his life to help, etc., any ethical considerations (please read explanation!) My wife and I carry passports from different EU countries. We are considering eventually retiring in a third EU country (timeframe >20 years). We have never paid into the social security systems in either of the countries we are citizens of, nor in any material way to any EU country. We are for all intents and purposes Americans who happen to be the children of immigrants. How would healthcare work for us? Is it really as simple as registering with the authorities as legal residents? Is there something we should be doing today? Does property ownership matter for us? [more inside]

Ok. I just realized that the one program I really, really want to go-to tomorrow at Comic Con is in a room I've never lined up for (6A). All I know is that the line is on the Bay side of the center but I don't know where it starts because none of the maps show it. I am prepared to be at the Con before 8am. Where do I need to camp at in order to get in to this room for the first two sessions?

Once upon a time, when I was working on quitting smoking by going to lots of Smokers Anonymous meetings, I read a book I really appreciated. It was an ordinary paperback about the pros and cons of smoking. It had a several chapter long section on all the scientific reasons that smoking is pleasurable, the release of dopamine, etc. The second half of the book was about the negatives, though I remember none of that. This was probably in the 1980s and the book had an especially lengthy title. [more inside]

I will be heading to Irvine, CA this weekend and wanted to get some ideas on fun things to do. We are a group of three adults and wouldn't mind driving an hour or so out of Irvine, unless there's something we must absolutely visit that's a little farther out. We're looking more for things like nature-y experiences, festivals, cool museums, etc. rather than shopping or sitting on the beach. I'm not really sure what Irvine has to offer so would appreciate any suggestions at all.

I have done cursory research on this, but it may just be a rumor or wishful thinking. Thanks for any suggestions.

Before you answer this question, please go to Wikipedia and look at a picture of a house centipede. I am not talking about millipedes or any similar creature with many legs. I haven't cleaned my house for years (to be clear, someone else was doing it - I wasn't living in filth). I recently bought a new house and I'm feeling a pleasant sense of accomplishment in taking care of it myself. For however long this is the case, I'd like to ride it out rather than hiring someone. Several days after a leak that came through a fluorescent tube light fitting, my mother's told me there's no problem with the light as she's turned it on and it was fine. I'm not happy this is safe. [more inside]

I've been performing interviews and hiring for a few years at my job now. I'm not very good at it. Essentially, I ask them a few questions about their experience and then go into a long speech about the company, job requirements, hours, dress code, bore fest. How can I make things more interesting and also get a lot of information? [more inside]
I have a cat and a small condo. Right now one entire bathroom is basically unusable because it contains her litter box and therefore is gross. I'm hoping to make some adjustments so that I can start using that bathroom, and I need your help to perfect my plan! [more inside]
I'm looking for a watch that is small, not bulky. I want it to be digital, preferably colorful or with a design. It being waterproof or water resistant is preferred. I would like something like this watch in a bright color or design. I don't care if it's women or men's, although feminine and not super sporty would be nice. I don't want a baby-g. I hate the round face and the super sportyness of it. [more inside]
I am looking for an inspiring talk (or something!) by someone who has grown up in what would be considered a "rough"/poor/"low ses" environment with not much opportunity, and through hard work and dedication, made their way into the middle class as a professional, but without disowning or disavowing their past. I have WhatsApp installed on my phone and primarily use it for communicating with friends and family. Recently, a series of business contacts/customers (up to VP levels!) have found me on WhatsApp and seem to think it is appropriate to use this medium to communicate and request information that I feel should only be transmitted via Work Email. This makes me uncomfortable. How can I get them to email me instead?

My bathroom needs some redecorating work and to save money I'd like to try doing it myself. I'm trying in vain to figure out how to automate, in Word, highlighting all instances of each numeral in a different color (e.g. 1 = yellow, 2 = cyan, etc.) to ensure consistency in translation work. Apparently when recording macros, it doesn't record what you search for, making it much harder for me to figure out how to actually go about this. Any suggestions and/or solutions? For what it's worth, I'm running the newest Word 365 on macOS.
I have an appointment tomorrow to get a REAL ID, as my ID expired earlier this year. I need something with proof of social security number, but cannot retrieve my social security card in time. I also can't find my most recent W2. The only one I've found is from 2012 - is this too old? [more inside]

A rolling stop is when someone approaches a stop sign and slows, but doesn't come to a complete stop before going through the intersection. Like this. In Southern Oregon, where I grew up and learned to drive in the 1980s, this was called a "California stop." I can't imagine that it's called that in California, or in states that don't share a border with California. Hence the question -- what is this kind of stop called in other parts of the US/world?

Where in the northeast should we go for a much-needed hermet-esque working holiday/retreat from humidity and distraction? I'm only asking for what, e.g., any music app does -- to add to "Now Playing," or whatever Ytb wants to call it. A "current playlist"...

I've had a Panasonic Lumix GF1 since 2010; it's given me some good pictures using the 20mm kit lens and also, recently, a nice 45mm Olympus fixed portrait lens. But I've been given some money and told to buy something memorable, and I'm thinking of buying a new camera - in particular, I'd like something that will work better under lower light conditions, which is where the GF1 and my phone camera both fall down a bit and where I would probably benefit from a larger sensor. What I'm looking for is something that is ideally under £500, although I can go up to £1000 in principle. I'll be mostly photographing people; I like getting candid shots so speedy focusing is pretty vital. I'm perfectly happy to buy a second hand camera. [more inside]

Most pool players experience this from time to time (and I'm sure it's true for other sports as well): We find themselves inexplicably playing worse than usual; then, this becomes a negative feedback loop, as we lose confidence in our playing and then do even worse. The next day we play all could be well again, but while this is happening it's very hard to shake, and very frustrating. What tips do people have for shaking it, or at least making the most of it?

I am a professor of information science, and I am teaching a special topic first-year undergraduate seminar this fall called "Data Doubles and Digital Traces." Are there any good museums, plays, movie screenings, or events related to surveillance, privacy, data, computing, and/or the self in New York City or Philadelphia in September through November of 2018 where I can take my students? I recently noticed that the grout between my kitchen floor tiles was not actually supposed to be dark (shudder!), but after a good scrub, it's a floor I'm proud to use the five-second rule with. I seem to be nesting and I'm wondering what other hidden yuck I'm missing in my house. Inside and outside chores are welcome--yucky/picky/finicky/forgotten ones especially--but nothing that requires permanently changing the structure of the house, as I rent. Thanks!
I've taken the Metro North to NYC from New Haven plenty of times on weekends, but the few times I've done it on weekdays the parking garage and attached lot were full and I've had to park farther than I'd like. Now it's summer and some commuters are probably on vacation... Do I have a much better shot at getting parking right at the station on a weekday morning? If it still typically fills, around what time does that tend to happen?
I went on vacation with a group of friends recently. One friend made numerous annoying comments about her looks and eating habits and I'm trying to figure out the root cause of those comments. [more inside]

Years ago, on the web, I came across a test question that a college professor posed to their students, sort of asking them what information ought to go onto an ebook reader/mobile device that oppressed peasants could use to make their own lives better, but subtextually demonstrating that this problem is very very hard. I can't find it now -- anyone got a link? [more inside]

My trans daughter needs estradiol pills today. Her prescription estrogen refill was automatically denied by her doctor until after her next appointment--which isn't until August 6, twenty-five days in the future. Unfortunately, we did not realize it had been denied after we requested the refill last week, as the pharmacy didn't notify us, and we had a disconnect in which prescriptions needed to be picked up when. She is out of pills as of last night. What can we do? [more inside]
I’ve being seeing the same therapist for almost 2 years. They are fairly new to being licensed, but are great, and have helped me through an extremely rocky time in my life including divorce. They have recently moved office, and I'm concerned about privacy in the new space: our sessions have been interrupted three times by people knocking on the door (and in one case walking in.) My therapist is very apologetic each time it's happened, but I'm still pretty shaken by the interruptions. I am torn as to whether I should chalk it up to growing pains due to her new space, or if it's a deal breaker. I'd appreciate any advice or guidance. More details below. [more inside]

I'm seeing a new therapist on a referral from someone who thought it would be a good pairing. I kind of get the vibe that this person might have voted for Trump, which would, frankly, be a deal-breaker for me since it would make it hard for me to ever trust them. Is it reasonable to ask them or is that too personal a question?
My S.O. considers the Internet a force of oppression. I don't disagree with her that it functions that way, but I want to show her what else it's capable of. What I'm looking for is non-tech-utopian examples of ways the Internet has [checks notes] "made the world a better place." Bonus points for anything involving inequality or social justice.

I was out of the country for six weeks, so maybe something happened in an update, but ever since I've been back (a couple days) YouTube and Twitch videos have been having problems. Other than general “don’t make a big deal out of it”, any suggestions for what I can do to help him know this isn’t a huge deal for me and that I think he is awesome. I'd also love any suggestions for me to make sure I am giving him the absolute most I can during our "interludes". [more inside]

What would you do to treat this small rust spot on my car? It has been like this for years and not spread. I'm not looking to spend a lot of time and effort to completely fix it, but I don't want it to cause any major problems down the road. Also, because of the car color (gold/tan) it is hard to find regular touch up paint. What would you do? (Also, would a rust neutralizers/converters work in this situation? And what would you use to remove that rust color under it?)
I want to make one of these things to play this fun game. But I want it to look cool & nice! How? How can I attach the ball to the rope without it looking janky? I need to wear a maxi dress due to mountain-biking bruises on my legs. In an FAQ about a laundry detergent (ECOS), I found an assertion that cocamidopropyl betaine deposits on clothing (due to clothing's negative charge). Is this true? I know hair is negatively charged too, so if the above is true, I'm wondering if hair would also retain a residue of surfactant? I'm a little concerned at the idea of residual surfactant on either my hair or my clothes, as I have sensitive skin that probably shouldn't be in contact with surfactant. (See inside for a cut-and-paste of the assertion I found.) [more inside]

I bought my home 10 years ago under a home rennovation loan in which I rolled a certain amount into my mortgage for basic home rennovations (it was a foreclosure). I've unfortunatly had some circumstances in which I have had to refinance once, but I am in good standing and it is a very affordable home for me. I believe it is in a great location that if I were keep it, and add some sq footage on and another bathroom I would make more equity and my daughter and I would be able to stay a little longer in that home. I love the area, and I have a yard, and it is very affordable given the high costs in my area. My home is one of the few homes in the neighborhood that hasn't had some sort of rennovation done, and still only has one bathroom. If I were to sell the home as is, with a few updates, I would walk away with a little under 100K to put towards a new home. But, if I can come up with a way to roll 100k into the mortgage for me to add square footage, a bathroom, and much needed exterior/interior repairs, I think I would end up making more and it would help me out in not have to move to a more expensive area. I am just not sure what sort of loan would allow me to do that, or what would be my best options- has anyone had experience with taking out a different loan for a project that could run me 100-125k, and rolling it into mortgage, or using equity?
You guys were so helpful with my last post, I was hoping you could help me figure out what's wrong with this one. Some leaves are bleaching. Others are solid green and wrinkly. Western Japan has been exceptionally rainy in the last few days and flooding seems to be affecting infrastructure like railways and roads. I'll be in Japan for about a month starting tomorrow, and my original itinerary included five days driving around Kochi and Ehime prefectures (specifically flying into Kochi on July 25 and driving to Cape Ashizuri, then along the west coast staying in Otsuki, Seiyo and Matsuyama and visiting Ozu, Uchiko and Uwajima), then flying to Fukuoka on July 30. Will this still work? Or should I go elsewhere in Japan? [more inside]
I (33, F) am getting my tonsils out in 5 days and I'm still trying to get a sense of the financial burden I'll bear afterwards. I have been at this for 1.5 months, with numerous back and forth calls between the ENT, who's based in Washington, DC, and my insurance (Anthem BCBS of Connecticut; I live in CT). I am a very fat fat-acceptance activist. I also have some very real health issues that would be alleviated with some moderate weight loss, and I've grown weary of quite literally not fitting in to a world that wasn't made for me. I could lose a hundred pounds and still be very fat, still be part of the fat acceptance community that means to much to me and has helped my mental health immeasurably. Inspired by Roxane Gay's recent essay about her weight loss surgery, I'm working on rectifying within myself the desire to continue to be a loud advocate for fat acceptance and critic of the diet industry, with the desire to make my own life a little easier. The problem I'm finding now is that there's no community I can find where it feels like these goals can co-exist. [more inside]

I used YouTube's auto-generated captioning to get the timings right for subtitles for a video of mine -- with aims, after a long clean up, of burning subtitles into the original .MP4. YouTube positions two lines of captions on the screen. My partner has decided to take the career leap into becoming a home inspector. My question is, for those that have experience in the industry: What are we missing? Is there a way to make sure that she is being set up for success and not missing a crucial step along the way? Also, what would be considered fair wages for a home inspector? If you are a home inspector, what advice would you give someone starting in the industry? How to make sure that she isn't being taken advantage of by the person offering apprenticeship? [more inside]

There's a quote from somewhere I've seen a few times now, I think in the political megathreads on Metafilter and elsewhere, that discusses the fundamental difficulty of arguing with certain right-wing groups because you (the hypothetical arguer) are attempting to engage in good faith while they are not. Is there such thing as a co-op auto shop/garage in Seattle? I'd love to learn the basics of auto-repair, but the only classes I have found are full degree/certificate programs. Is there something more casual that an auto-ignoramus can access in Seattle? I'm not averse to travelling, but I'd prefer it to be in-city rather than the outlying areas. anybody?
I currently have a job with great quality-of-life perks, but it's low-pay, I'm bored and it isn't looking like there's much more career growth here. I want to move on, but I am lost every step of the way, including in deciding whether I should leave at all. [more inside]

I wish to improve fluency with correct pronouns. In particular, I want reinforcement of personal, gender-non-specific, gender-non-conforming, epicene they. I've narrowed my car choice down to a certified used 2016/7 Honda Fit with mileage <40k costing <$16k. I've test driven it and really like it. All previous Ask threads have been so informative to get me to this point. But I have several simple questions remaining. [more inside]
I've come to realize over the last couple of months that my favorite part of my job is when I'm just crunching numbers in Excel. I love organizing data and creating formulas and tables. Right now a lot of my position also includes interpreting everything and writing reports and detailing insights, which I find a lot less exciting and would rather just hand off to someone else. What are positions that would entail just the Excel part (or something similar to it)? [more inside]

A friend is moving to Philadelphia and I want to get her a gift that will help her settle in to her new life there. The thing is, what she mostly needs right now is money (she will be between jobs). I weigh 450 lbs (down from 470 already). My weight is carried very much in my front gut area. I wear 7X t-shirts, but they also have to be Tall to cover my belly. In Ocean's 8, Debbie (Sandra Bullock) has a handwritten checklist that she is protective of. It was never on screen long enough for me to decipher it; but all the items wind up crossed off by the end of the film. However, we don't know much and I'm not really sure where you learn this stuff. I am sure though, that the only way to learn is to do it. I'm a software engineer, he's a lawyer, he's got the contacts, I have the leadership skills. Nonetheless, I feel like we need more people, in my opinion we need another engineer besides me, a UI/UX designer and someone who's good with money, logistics and financing so that he or she can keep us from blowing all our money. I'm not sure where I'd find those people. I'm not sure how I will find clients, though me and my lawyer friend had some ideas but we're just making it up as we go along. I'm not sure if that's the best way of doing this. [more inside]

We're moving our largish 1 bedroom apartment's worth of stuff (furniture, dishes, books, decor) at the end of August. Our first pick would be to hire a moving company. But is there any reputable moving company under the sun? Every company has a slew of horror stories: broken and lost stuff, extortionist price hikes or inflated weight claims, massive delays. I know I can make a good guess at the gender based on the ending of a word, but those are just heuristics— isn’t knowing the actual gender fairly important?

What I want ultimately is that the SSD should be the Windows/boot drive, and the original hard disk to just be secondary storage. A friend has advised me to simply reinstall WIn 7 on the new SSD. I saw a humorous video on twitter (about 50 seconds long) in the last few weeks in which a gentleman addresses the camera in a New York accent, praises what he deems to be classic New York establishments like Starbucks and CVS, then samples the goods from the establishments and is very satisfied. Are you familiar with this video? My google-fu has failed me. [more inside]
My friend needs a novel to read that's funny along the lines of Jennifer Belle's High Maintenance. In the past I have suggested Crazy Rich Asians for her, and I just sent her The Good House By Ann Leary because it has a sort of "Wow this is so messed up" feeling on almost every page. But it's not as weirdly funny at Jennifer Belle's stuff. Any fans of Belle have other authors you are similarly fond of? Thanks!
We have always had two cars but could condense to one car, if only we could find one that ticks both of our lists. My car all along has been a 1994 Mazda Miata with a manual transmission. It's been a lot of fun to drive, but is really the "second car". Mr. DrGail has had a succession of Asian compact sedans as our primary vehicle, mostly Hondas. His current car is a Mazda3 at the top trim level. Is there a car out there that we would both love? [more inside]
It's become clear that it's time to replace my laptop. I'd prefer a windows desktop that can run a few games, but I'm hoping to find something with a quiet or silent fan. I'm completely out of my depth - are there any recommendations?

I’ve got some pothos that lives in water. I’ve just returned from ten days away, and I’ve found that it’s covered in mold. I tried wiping off the mold and putting it in fresh water, but a day later the mold is just as prominent. How do I make this pothos happy again?
I was packing for a trip yesterday. I was twisting my body while placing a book on my bed and I sneezed violently (Manchester fires, air pollution), which threw my hip out of whack—I felt a pop and my leg went numb. I laid on my back for an hour and then powered through. I’m now in Menorca and things have gotten much worse. [more inside]
I ordered a temporary "fast set" above ground pool that is supposed to be here tomorrow. It's 12' in diameter, holds about 1500 gallons and is 24" deep. My kid has been looking forward to it. Thing is, when checking how close I am legally allowed to put it to my house, I found that my particular town requires a building permit and inspection process. (For an inflatable, $59 pool!) Is there another pool I can get in time that will be legal but not be so small as to be obnoxious? [more inside]

I have decided to take the plunge (who can tell another what to do) and do it. I.e. become a life coach, that odd profession that is not quite therapy but also not not (no offense to my medical brethren, please). My background is in schools where people all naturally meet each other. Because of this, it isn't so easy - not like just putting up a profile on Psychology Today. Where do people go nowadays? Life coaching forums? Clearly MY strengths lie less in predicting market trends than emotional understanding, training and development and so perhaps YOU metafilter could coach me through it. I want to swap my coffee habit for a tea habit, for my teeth, my gut, and my anxiety. I drink an aeropress every morning and a cup or two of drip at the office. I've got instant hot water at my office. I'm looking for recommendations on teas to drink that would be super delightful. I like strong, malty beverages, and also herbal flavors - not a fan of fruit or artificial flavors in my teas. Thanks!

Looking for non-violent , entertaining and at-least-a-little educational electronic games for my kids. An alternative to the approx half hour of shows they watch per day. The 4 year old loves vehicles/police trucks / fire rescue, and doesn’t like things that are explicitly academic, but I thInk could be persuaded to play some kind of matching game (esp if it involves said vehicles). The 7 year old likes simple video games like those found on pbs.org. I like them too because they are innocent, non-gender-oriented and have a variety of options. Anything you recommend? Thanks! Ideally they can be played independently and with minimal adult supervision (so, no commercials or opportunities to spend money). Thanks!!
I just had a new heat pump installed up on the roof of my building and have cold air again! Hooray! However, while changing the filter I notice there is water condensation near the evaporator coil in the ceiling bit inside my apartment... and it doesn't all fall into the drain pain. Is the drain pain simply misaligned somehow? Here are two pics to give an idea of whats going on. I'm sure I'll have someone out to look at the evaporator coil but if anyone has guidance on what to expect, that would be excellent..

I am trying to remember the name of this philosophical short story I once read. If I recall correctly, it starts with a character with zero senses. Eventually he is born into a new world where he has a sense of touch and is piled on top of others just like him and can only feel their bodies. I believe that he slowly advances, gaining hearing and eventually sight. Does this ring a bell at all?

I volunteer with a local chapter of a national organization. We have in our possession a short documentary film that was made by one of our volunteers in the 1980s, beautifully documenting a project we worked on on local public lands. The filmmaker, a professional cinematographer, shot and produced this film as a labor of love and a gift to our organization. Until now it's only been shared among a small number of people directly associated with our activity. The person who produced the work passed away in 2010. [more inside]

I have a year-old cable modem/router. It has the latest technology and is a dual band. It has 4 wired ports as well. I have about 60Mbps download speed. I am trying to understand if it makes any difference in reaching that limit whether the devices are connected wirelessly (usually only my phone) or wired. The wired devices include the PC, PS4, Roku. These devices are rarely on at the same time.
Because of severely over-enthusiastic baking by several members of a local village church before an event today, yadda yadda yadda I have 238 pieces of cake in my fridge. It is ferociously hot here in rural England. Here's one of the tupperware containers of cake that currently line my fridge shelves. There is a variety of fruit cakes, ginger cakes, iced cakes, scones etc, all hewn into pieces of similar size. While I figure out what next, how long will they keep, and can I extend their life? I do not have access to a reliable freezer.

Within the last few years I heard a report on the radio about a chamber music ensemble that was radically reinterpreting Vivaldi. I think their premise was that he originally intended his compositions to be played with greater latitude in tempos, and with more improvisation. The samples played in the report were almost unrecognizable as Vivaldi. What group was this? [more inside]
I've been listening to an Italian classical radio station ("Radio Classica") which plays a lot of diverse, interesting music. Unfortunately, they don't publish a playlist (that I could find) and all of the talk is in Italian. They had a choir singing what sounded like a Christian Mass and I'm 90% sure they were from Kenya. Would anyone have an idea of what group it might have been?
It's been a terrible 4 years and I'm burnt out. On top of a lot of other things (caregiving for people with cancer; dad dying; big breakup; lots of upheaval) I recently abruptly lost my one big client, and I'm having trouble finding new work. I'm considering handing the notice in on my expensive flat and living out of a backpack for 2/3 months, while trying to work remotely. However, I worry this will burn me out even more. I'm already panicked that I have no money coming in. Plus I've started seeing someone. I'd love help on making a decision when my brain feels tired. [more inside]

What are some good exercises that can help me figure that out what I want to do with my life? I could go a lot of directions at this particular juncture in my life and I am finding myself paralyzed with ambivalence that comes from an abundance of choices and some definite depression (getting help with that!). Can you think of any life planning exercises that might help me get on with my thinking and maybe help me excite myself out of this rut?
