Is there a compact camera that is as good as the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S6 but is considerably cheaper than the S6 itself? [more inside]
I've never read any Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett, but am now in the middle of Good Omens and really enjoying it. An attempt years ago to get into the first of the Discworld series failed early (I'm generally a lukewarm fantasy fan at best), but for some reason, this hits the spot - what other titles from either of them should I try next?
I recently quit my job and started another, with my termination date unfortunately a day before the company purchases shares for an ESPP. So I now have a good chunk of money originally set aside for investing in my (now former) company. Any suggestions what I should do with it? Single-stocks, mutual funds, robo-advisors (e.g. Wealthfront), Roth IRA, index funds? About me: I'm 29, single male, renting, no loans or debts, and make a decent salary as a Silicon Valley medical device engineer, so I'm not pressed for cash or anything and are more open to risk. No need for specifics, just some ideas.
Hello New Yorkers, I have two friends here in Spain who will be visiting scholars in the US for 4 months between October and January. The catch is that one will be working in NYU and the other at Princeton. Ideally, they would like to stay in or near Manhattan, but in an area that makes it as easy as possible to travel to Princeton. [more inside]

I recently applied for a job in the pharmaceutical industry as a statistical programmer. I was told that if I successfully move to the next stage of the selection procedure, I will need to set a "quality control" test, in addition to a programming test. I would like to know "quality control" means in this context, so that I can try to prepare myself. [more inside]
I’m terrible at striking up conversation with people that I don’t know. Some of this is my thought patterns and attitudes, some of it is my anxiety, but I’m realizing more and more that I just never quite learned how to properly do it. [more inside]

How do I convince my stepfather that Hillary Clinton is not actually an evil, "ice queen", and might be worth giving a second chance? [more inside]
I want to know where gun owners tend to keep their guns. As I reason, there are only a few places that can be; (1) at home, (2) in their car or (3) on their person. Are there any statistics or studies that show where people keep their primary firearm - one they may say is mostly for protection as opposed to hunting or target practice (even though that firearm may be used interchangeably by some owners)?
Is it OK to eat the shells with soft or hard boiled eggs? [more inside]
Don't know who wrote it, though Mark Twain and Robert Heinlein came to mind. It's about boys working on a task, possibly in a frontier or rural setting. It goes something like: 1 boy is worth 1 boy, 2 boys are worth 1/2 a boy and 3 boys don't get any work done.
Hello everyone, I was wondering if you could help me as I'm feeling a bit lost. My family are encouraging me to become a teacher, as I've been in the education system for three years and I am good at it, but I do not enjoy teaching children... More inside [more inside]

A year ago, I bought a car from my family in Alabama. I brought it to my home in New York, and got it properly registered here. This involved giving the New York DMV the Alabama title document and being told I'd receive a New York document in the mail. The New York title document never arrived. What do I need to do to get it? [more inside]
I grew up in a relatively dysfunctional living situation, and didn't get a chance to pick up on many life skills growing up that one might expect an adult to know. I'd like to fluff out my "life skills resume" resume so I don't feel like a fraud every time I remember that I'm already supposed to be an adult by now. What should I know by now, as an adult, that my parents probably should have taught me? Please limit suggestions to those that you view as essential for a successful adult life. [more inside]

The fates have conspired to give me a week off with a car to myself and no plans. I am starting out in Wenatchee, WA and need to be back in 7 days to catch a train home. Given my rough draft itinerary, where should I eat and what should I see while I'm out there? [more inside]
I have long, dark hair. I know that I will be responsible for a long trail of shed strands and hairballs, possibly for the rest of my life. Thus, I've developed various coping mechanisms: constant vigilance about certain areas of the bathroom, tying my hair up during food prep, &c. I'd like to know what habits you other longhairs keep in order to reduce your hair-trail in home/professional environments -- and on your clothes. [more inside]

My cousin's friend recently discovered a small, petrified animal embedded in a tree. He chopped down this tree near Marquette, Michigan, and was cutting firewood when he made this discovery. He describes the animal as about three inches long, and rock hard. Though maybe not visible in the photo, he believes that it may have hind legs. What might this animal have been, and how might it have gotten embedded in a tree? [more inside]
Hello. I just got confirmation from my Uni that their accommodations are setting me up with a flat in Shadwell. It was my 3rd choice and 2 trains from my college. But just reading online, I didn't realize that Shadwell doesn't have a good reputation, has had some violent crime in recent months and has some... 'Extremist' possible group activities going on there. Therefore I was wondering if anyone has any feedback, insight or experiences w/ this and these neighborhoods in the SE London/Lewisham area who can let me know which may be better options? Here is a map link to my Flat/Dorm building. [more inside]

When I was in Crete recently, the owner of our B&B made us some delicious cheese pies. I would like to know what they are called so I can find a recipe. They were each slightly larger than a pack of cards, made from pastry (I don't think it was filo, but maybe) folded over some sort of soft salty cheese like feta or similar. It looked like they were deep fried or shallow fried in a lot of oil or butter. They were piled in a bowl and drizzled with heated honey. The B&B owner served them with rakomelo and said that was traditional for these pies. [more inside]

Two months ago, I dropped a pair of shoes (value ~$100) off at a cobbler in my neighborhood. He told me he was having problems with his vision, and to give him a couple of weeks to finish the shoes, because he needed to see the doctor that week to fix his vision (cataract surgery??) before he could work on them. That should have been sufficient indication of what was to come.... [more inside]
My definition, based on my admittedly limited experience, is that the per diem is paid as a lump sum, either up-front or after the fact, for [per diem amount * days worked] without regard to how much the recipient actually spends. What this company offers is reimbursement for actual expenses up to [per diem amount], with receipts required from the contractor/employee. [more inside]
I'm trying to find a replacement for a lightbulb in my bedroom. Pictures 1, 2. Couldn't get a great photo of the text. I don't see anything indicating wattage. The other side of the bulb is stamped that it is made in China. Can anyone provide the search string I need to replace this? Thanks!
Nearly a decade ago I discovered that I might be a British dual-citizen. I finally sent in the paperwork, and my application status just changed to "your new passport has been printed and will be delivered shortly." Wow! Thanks, MetaFilter! I just had a big blow up with my husband's "mother" and while he's taken my side, the more I think about it, the more it seems his story doesn't hold up, and I feel he kind of provoked the argument, but maybe not on purpose. Looking back, this seems to be a pattern. [more inside]
I'm in my late 20s and have been a bit of an eternal student, but I'm finally graduating and hope to find a job soon. I don't know what field it'll be in at this point, but office work of some sort. Do you have any good home remedies for hair loss in women? I have noticed that my hairline is receding somewhat. My part looks a bit wider and you just see a bit more of my scalp generally. I cannot identify a cause but it happened over the course of 4-8 months. I eat a good diet with plenty of protein (eggs, etc.). Thyroid tests normal. I have noticed a bit more hairs shed in the shower, but nothing that unusual. No hairs on the pillow, but some on the floor. Scalp okay but a bit of dandruff. I have been using a new hair color but I can't imagine it would cause my hair to fall out at the roots when rest of it is long and healthy looking. The loss is mostly at the temples and top third of my head. I used to have A LOT of hair. Any suggestions or home remedies are welcome!
My job is awful — and I mean really awful. I can’t get a full night’s sleep, take care of myself, or have a life any more. I’m suffering mentally and physically, but the exit door isn’t clearly marked. I could use some advice...and also, a new job. Lots of shitty snowflakes inside. [more inside]

So....I'm a bit of a plant nerd and have a nice collection of rare palms and fruit trees in my garden in New Zealand. I also have a nice web-based database where I have information about each plant such as the date I planted it, what I paid for it, and horticultural info (told you I was a nerd!). What I'd really like is to: 1) create a video of the garden, zooming in on each plant, where the viewer can click on that plant and be taken to its relevant webpage for more information. 2) have a textbox appear with the name of tha plant 3) have the option of displaying pictures (e.g. of that same plant in previous years) on screen. Trying to find a book I saw a review of: there's a huge number of humans at this point (trillions?), either living as uploaded minds in virtual reality, or in actual different physical/constructed realities. In the inciting incident, a main character is told there is no originality anymore: plenty of people across their society are simultaneously, in their own studios, creating pretty much the same thing, independently. I'm working on a hybrid genre writing piece that incorporates all the uncanny things I can find related to Abe Lincoln, especially his assassination and death. I want to uplevel my vegetarian cooking. Today I bought a fantastic salad for lunch that includes kale, quinoa/pepper salad, avocado, pickled onion, beets, carrots (which I generally hate but somehow they are awesome here) and zucchini. I was speaking with a former US Representative about carbon pricing and she basically said "it's never going to get through Congress, the fastest way is to get Obama to issue an executive order". I asked a few other politics buffs and was told the same thing. Is this former Member of Congress not sure of what she's talking about?

When I was five, I got up out of bed to bug my parents about something, and accidentally saw some unusually violent footage on the evening news. The awfulness of it has stuck with me, even though I have no idea what it really was. This would have been around 1983 - 1984 (possibly troubling details within). [more inside]
I saw a music video which I think was a grime video (it's been a while, so maybe I'm mistaken) which had two musicians driving what looked like cardboard boxes around a computer graphic background. The musicians faces/hands/necks were darkened. I believe they had sunglasses on. The colors were highly saturated/day-glo. Anyone know wot I'm talkin' about?

I am in treatment for severe anxiety. At home, I self-soothe by wringing my hands and rocking, but that's not appropriate for the workplace. I need to be typing so worry stones and spinner rings are out. I need to elevate my legs so foot tapping is out, too. What are some subtle physical things I can do at my desk to calm myself?
I've always been told I'm skinny by my peers. I'm a female, 5'8", and currently 129 pounds. But I feel that my fat percentage overall is definitely rising, although look-wise I might look relatively the same. Ever since I stopped playing sports I've been getting a little flabbier. My friends say don't worry you're still so skinny, but I want to be toned and lean, instead of "skinny-fat". Whats the best way? [more inside]

Coming to San Francisco next week for a conference and staying near Union Square. Usually it takes me about 30 minutes of lying awake in bed before I'm sentient enough to do basic things like walk across the room and put on my clothes. I submitted a bunch of rent checks to my housing non-profit for six months ahead. One of these was a counter check—printed in-branch by the teller without name or address, just my bank account routing code. Unfortunately, it seems that the teller didn't properly review all the checks before giving them to me, and one of them did not have my account info on it. Neither I nor my housing non-profit noticed this omission before the check was deposited, and of course it was returned by their bank with "Unknown Account" on it. My housing authority chose to consider this an NSF check, and are requesting that I pay their NSF fee. Is that a reasonable request? [more inside]

I feel like I have to watch what I say, especially since these days people tend to overreact and cry out racism all the time. It seems as if people try to make something racist or blow everything out of proportion. Can these comments below be perceived as racist? 1) People from India love the heat (since India is a very hot country). 2) Greek people like olives (because good olives are from Greece) I bring up these two examples because a friend of mine said that making absolute statements and referring to an entire population is racist. But these statements sound neutral to me. If they were negative statements then I think that would be racism.

I have a brother who needs to learn about feminism. This is important because we have delightful conversations other than when he says things that make me want to shake him until his teeth rattle; he's got some fairly fucked up unconscious assumptions about women. Having dealt with my own unconscious assumptions on many occasions, I've found that I do best with resources that have me as their target audience, especially when the ideas are new. I'd like to give such a resource to my brother--one that is therapeutically gentle/learning oriented with where he's starting as a man, but which also helps him get some of the feminism basics down. I'm not looking for general feminism 101; I'm hoping to find more male-targeted resources. Engaging tone is preferred to academic, but I'll take what I can get.

Hi Metafilter, I am trying to spiffy up the monthly newsletter that is put out through my local mothers club. One feature I want to add is a monthly interview with a mothers club member who owns their own business/is in business for herself. I was thinking I would ask the same set of 3-5 interview questions to each person. I would love suggestions for questions that you think would be interesting in this regard. Also, I want to feature a different member family each month. Instead of asking them to provide the usual biographical blurb, I'd like to ask each family the same fun question each month. I also would love suggestions for what this question could be. Thank you!

Punch suggestions also welcome!

Compiling files is much faster on my SSD-equipped laptop than on my iMac with a traditional hard drive. I'd like my desktop machine to blaze like the laptop. But I wonder: would this happen with just an external SSD drive and all my files moved over to it? Or would I need to replace the internal drive?

I recently discovered this rendition of O Magnum Mysterium on tumblr and it took my breath away. I mean that truly - the first time I listened, it gave me goosebumps and then brought me to tears. Something about the vocal harmonies coming together and then drifting apart and the sound resonating off the walls of the bathroom and aaagggh! I need more of this sort of music in my life. My (very) new boyfriend told me Friday he isn't sure if he sees himself living with someone or getting married again. Later in the weekend, he backtracked and said he was stressed out about other things, afraid of losing me, and he could be open to it. Is this relationship doomed, or can "not sure" mean something other than "no"? [more inside]

I recently began taking Maryland's MARC commuter rail to and from work (Rockville-DC), and I'm noticing something I've never observed before in my years as a commuter. It seems that a lot (really, a very high percentage) of these passengers have come to know one another, and have formed little communities throughout the rail cars. From what I can gather, these people don't work together, and few if any of them socialize outside of their daily commute, but they are simply thrilled to see one another every day, and they swap stories, jokes, and affectionate barbs with one another in a way that reminds me of nothing so much as a cadre of barflies who've been regulars at the same watering hole for years (today, actually, several passengers passed around a bottle of wine). I hadn't taken regional commuter rail until recently; my commuting experiences have been limited to bus and city subway systems. At any rate, I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS! [more inside]

Purchased a house knowing the supply line from the water main was lead. Options are purchasing a cooler for potable water, buying a whole house filter and replacing the hot water tank, or replacing the supply line and HWT. Assuming that the third option is beyond our means at the moment and the first option is a stopgap, please recommend a whole house water filtration system available in Canada that is durable, practical, and won't need to be replaced in three years because 'they don't make those kinds of filters anymore' or similar nonsense.
You are not my ophthalmologist. I'll see my doc again in a couple of months. I am asking (pretty please) for experiences/advice with wearing multifocal disposable contact lenses. Did they work for you? This might seem like a dumb question, but I am trying to figure out if I need a different Rx, or if these kinds of contacts just won't work for me. Not long ago, I was traveling on Interstate 35, driving north from Laredo, Texas to San Antonio. On the way, I saw a line of about six late model cars traveling together. (e.g., am I allowed to contribute money to Momentum? Can I write letters protesting the NEC’s disenfranchisement of new party members in the upcoming election?) What about when I visit the UK in late August?
My wife, 12 year-old son and I will have a free afternoon and evening in San Francisco this coming Thursday. We fly in the afternoon before from the UK, will probably take bikes over the golden gate bridge in the morning, and we'd like to soak up a bit of SF in the afternoon and evening, before we head off on a road trip for the following three weeks. Yay! So what to do? Where to go? And perhaps somewhere relaxed and nice to eat in the evening? [more inside]
I am traveling to Groningen, NL, for work in August. I am planning to stay an extra whole day to take in the city. It will be Friday Aug 18th. What should I put on my itinerary? I have looked at travel websites and the like and I'm sure I can find a good list of interesting things to see and do, but I'm looking for your personal highlights of the town. Less critical, but any suggestions for quirky places to stay? Hotels that are central seem very reasonable, so I'm not as concerned about that.
After reading Andy Baio's adventures of "educating" his son on video game history, I'm interested to get a plug-and-play type system to play old arcade games with my soon-to-be 5 year old son, but I'm not sure what to pick. Details inside. [more inside]

I just got back from a long vacation which was mostly great. I stayed with friends in a few places and at AirBnBs or hotels in a few other places. We had a house guest who loved cologne and left his bedroom smelling of it. Even with the bedding, mattress, and dresser drawers removed from the room, the smell persists, and it's strongest around the dresser, which is made of wood, as is the floor. I've tried regular wood cleaner and a vinegar-water solution on these, and have set a dish of coffee grounds on the dresser. Any other ideas?

To this question I typically respond "well". My girlfriend says grammatically it should be "good" if I am not also including "I slept..." preceding. We both agree that "I slept well," is grammatically correct, but who is correct when the verb is omitted?

I love computer RPGs, especially Bioware, but I don't really love combat -- so maybe what I want is one of these "visual novels" I have heard about. Can you recommend any that can stand up to Bioware -- that kind of excellent writing, and beautiful graphics (!important)?
My friend is celebrating his five year testicular cancer-free diagnosis in December, and I'd really like to get him something amusing and wonderful as a gift. He's a pretty big nerd with a wonderful sense of humor about being post orchiectomy, so I'd love to get him something that's both commemorative and slyly hilarious - something he'd see and smile at every day that doesn't scream Lance Armstrong's missing testicle. I am a widow and my boyfriend had a very painful and messy divorce 5 years ago. We got together a year ago (right after my husband died) and it has been so amazing. We have an LG fridge that needs to be defrosted overnight in anticipation of moving house tomorrow. However, the plug is in the back and we're not sure how to move it. Is it simply a matter of stretching a bungee cord around the back and pulling? Alternatively, would we be able to get away with perhaps turning the temperature on the fridge to the warmest setting and letting it defrost that way overnight? Anything else we should know about fridge moving? I already know to keep it vertical.

Do you lift people regularly onstage? If so, what are your best tips for doing so safely? In the opera I'm currently rehearsing, I have a comedy fight scene which involves lifting another singer. How does one remove a dying mouse safely? When I last checked, it was moving (which may or may not have caused me to shreik) so I'm not sure if it's strong enough to try to escape, although it has visible puncture wounds from my cat's teeth.

What's the correct way of the completing the LGBT acronym? Should it be LGBTA, LGBT+, LGBTQ, LGBTI or LGBTQ+. I've seen all of them lately and I want to get this right but numerous style guides and sources offer different options.
With the recent events in Dallas, there's been renewed talks about gun control vs. second amendment freedom etc etc. So that got me wondering: in which US State could I, as a foreign passport holder on a tourist visa (and therefore not a resident), just walk into a store and buy a gun without any question asked? Or is it not that simple? I'm looking for specific states where the legislation makes gun purchase as easy as is being reported in the media.
I'm basically looking for the opposite of Forever 21 cheapy disposable stuff. I don't want designer fashion (and especially don't want their astronomical prices!), but I'd like clothes that I can wear to work or more casual shirts and dresses I could wear on the weekend. I used to shop at Ann Taylor and Banana Republic, and I still do on occasion, but I'm wondering if there are clothes that are higher quality that don't cost too much more. For example, Hanna Andersson's women's clothing intrigues me, especially the dresses in pima cotton.
I live in the UK and laundry here is just different from in the states for a number of reasons. I hang my laundry to dry, which mostly works fine except for my long-sleeved t-shirts, which always smell musty. I space them out all over the house, they feel totally dry and don't smell at all when I put them away, but a few days later when I pull one out to wear, they smell of mold. [more inside]
Some insects live short lives and don't eat or even have mouths. How do they breed? Wouldn't you run out of insects eventually if there's no input into the system of insect breeding as a whole? If I built and set free autonomous robots programmed to "breed" by assembling new robots out of each other, and they built other robots without picking up any spare parts or materials, wouldn't I eventually run out of functioning robots? What am I missing that this is so confusing? There has to be a logical answer to this.
I am looking for an old website (at least 10 years old) that did weekly art challenges for members only. [more inside]
This dingleberry left a watermelon in a bag in her car on a hot day. Even more stupidly, I covered it with my favorite jacket. The watermelon must've fermented/exploded, then whatever sludge was left gave my navy blue 98% cotton, 2% spandex trim jacket (with gold metal lobster clasps and some similar hardware) some funky bleached-out patterns that haven't come out after two washes. How can I mask the damage so that the jacket is a solid color again? [more inside]
I'm going to be in San Francisco tomorrow morning until Friday night to meet some relatives of mine from Sweden, along with my parents. Most of those two days are going to be spent with the family but my dad wants me to show my 17-year-old relative around so that we aren't with "the olds" the entire time. I haven't been to SF since I was 14. My friend told me to stop by the venue he works at, Thee Parkside. [more inside]
I love L'Oréal's Sublime Glow for fair skin tones. Unfortunately L'Oréal has stopped making it, curse them. Jergens Natural Glow turned me orange. I play the bass. Haven't played much Blues music. For the purpose of study and emulation I am looking for Blues recordings where the bass playing is masterful . So, I bought a cheap Wacom graphics tablet (Intuos) to make it easier for me to do photo editing. But I've found that it's really jittery (the pointer jumps around a little bit on the screen, even on a slow setting) and in some ways a mouse was more accurate. Do I need a more expensive model, and if so, which one? Or do I just need more practice?

I am trying to locate a short story I read sometime in the last few (1-3) years. Kids living around us are fascinated by the occasional time we have taken our ferrets for a walk. A few of them have asked whether ferrets are haram. AMZN was going along fine, close to an all time high on Amazon Prime Day today, when it suddenly dropped 1.5%, accompanied by huge volume. Didn't see the same drop in other stocks, so something Amazon related must have happened. Just curious. The market always responds more quickly than the news outlets, but maybe investors or brokers have heard something.
Are there any wireless gaming 7.1 headphones for PC (think Logitech G933) that can also be used with a phone without changing any connections? I've seen some that have the ability to have multiple simultaneous inputs, but I'm a little fuzzy on if I can use the same cans hooked up to my PC and to my phone at the same time so I don't have to switch in order to take conference calls.

How does one go about doing this? Thanks!
Meet Jill, the terribly shy, but sweet, 11-month old shepherd/lab (?!) mix we adopted last night. I think she needs 2 syllables. We like old-fashioned names. With all this outrage at Pokemon Go, I was trying to think of examples of past past times (or just new technology) that there was a degree of public outrage that seem a bit silly now. I found a few examples of hula hoops scares ("Chiropractors and osteopaths are noticing more business from the hoopster set"), I know there was a bit of hub-bub about the "new wireless radios", and I remember reading some something about an old thinker complaining about students wasting their time on chess. What are some other examples?

Extended family that I visit (I'm in Canada) and stay with a few times a year have started the application for a "pistol permit" in New York state. I have a toddler who's never met a button that he didn't press or a latch he didn't fiddle with. I know it's unlikely a gun would be accessible during a visit but I've seen the statistics. My gut reaction is to not visit anyone who has a gun (maybe having one locked in a gun safe would be ok) but I don't know if that is excessive. They are buying the gun "for protection" so I am assuming it will be carried and I want to get a handle on my feelings before I discuss it with them. Have you been in this situation? How did you manage it?

I'm moving to a new office at work, from a rat-maze cubicle-farm cube in a room with very tall ceilings and surrounded by windows to an office with a door in the basement. My 15 year old cat is becoming more of a jerkface. He's always been a bigmouth, but within the past year he's ramped up the yowling. I took him in awhile back and the vet said there's nothing physically wrong with him, he's basically just an asshole (the vet was a bit more tactful). Now he's started attacking my other cat - they've been together for 10 years. What gives? What can I do? [more inside]

My wife and I both used Pantene Flexible Hold #1 hairspray for many years. Now that it has been discontinued, I'm hoping you guys can offer an alternative spray with those qualities. We don't want hair helmets or bees buzzing around our heads! Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

In 1996, Sierra released a program called "Power Chess" for Windows 95 and 98. It was based on the WChess engine and had a fantastic teaching mode. Your primary opponent, the King, would learn from you as you played. Games would get progressively harder as he tailored his strategy around your weaknesses. Once each game against him ended, you could play it back move by move and the "Queen" would explain his strategy and suggest how you could have played differently. Power Chess is no longer supported by Sierra/Activision and won't run on Windows 10. Does an Android or Windows equivalent exist? [more inside]

For the past two weeks, I have had a blurry spot in my left eye. Whenever I look up and to the left, it looks like there's an after-image there, as if I've been staring into a light or the sun. When it first started, there was a pressure verging on pain behind my left eye, and what felt like a muscle strain every time I moved my eyeball quickly, like when I was driving and needed to check my blindspot. The pain has gone away. On the advice of an Urgent Care doctor a few days ago, I got a CT scan, which was negative. Various doctors checked my peripheral vision when I was in the ER waiting for the scan, and they told me my vision was normal. My vision is not normal, though, because I do not normally have a blurry after-image spot in my left eye. What do I need to do to pursue this? [more inside]

If 'Intro To Post-1975 Poetry' is too impossibly broad, a survey of Canadian poets in specific would also appeal to him.

I've noticed that all of my dogs (and most puppies in general) have had some irregular, dark splotches on their bellies and underarms (underlegs?) that fade with age. Curious because I've noticed them on all of the dogs I've ever had, but nothing turns up on google, except for pathological conditions.

Seeking examples or lists of writing that have inspired writers to write. Not "I read Orlando and wanted to be a writer," but novels, stories, or non-fiction that, when read, inspire one immediately to write, either on a one-time or a repeated basis. I write regularly; I'd like to have a shelf by my desk that I dip into more or less randomly before writing to prime the pump. While I love many books or stories, I rarely remember the ones that make me want to write.
All of my devices cannot connect to websites other than Facebook, Google and Yahoo Mail, and to Skype. Why and how can I fix this? [more inside]

The smallest dose Vyvanse comes in is 30 mg. That's too much for me, and makes me speedy. Opening the capsule and taking a much smaller dose gives me the concentration I want, without the side effects; my doctor approves of this. My guess is that 10 mg- 15 mg is the right dose for me (I understand this might change over time, but that's what it's been for a while). How do I keep the dose consistent? [more inside]
I recently completed my master's degree, and have spent the past six weeks looking for a relevant job. This week I received my first offer, but am torn about whether to accept or keep looking. [more inside]
This is both a postpartum and a period question -- since having my child last November my period seems to stop or pause when I try to use tampons (or a diva cup). It's been going on for five cycles so I'm pretty sure it's not just in my head but I don't know what this is called or if it's worth talking to my dr/ob about. Gory details to come. [more inside]
I had a friend hire me for a job, and quickly use her position over me to cut my hours and cause me undue stress. I'm at a loss as to what is actually going on, and how to proceed from this point on. [more inside]

I'm in Bangkok on a short work trip, and I'm potentially interested in getting my teeth whitened while I'm here. The dental clinic I've gone to before (and been very happy with) offers Zoom!2 and Plasma Cool-Light procedures. Does anyone have knowledge, or first-hand experience with either of these? What would you recommend? Zoom!2 seems faster and less likely to cause tooth sensitivity, and I'm inclined to go with that--but should I even get my teeth whitened in the first place? [more inside]
I would like to find more non fiction comics. I don't care if they are online or paper or some other format. I'm particularly interested in ones about science/math, but history, memoir etc are also interesting. I particularly liked ‘Primates,’ by Jim Ottaviani. I also like XKCD and Larry Gonick.
I have a BA and MFA in English-Creative Writing. Currently, I teach English at a community college. While most of my job experience is in education, I no longer want to work in this field. What are some jobs to which I'd be able to successfully apply/career change? Thanks.
I live in North California. Moved into a new neighborhood house a month ago. Since moving in, I haven't really been able to use the backyard because of what I believe I've identified as 50-75 hovering paper wasps! I have a 2-year-old, so I'd like to get rid of them so that we can enjoy our backyard again. [more inside]

I am contemplating upgrading the memory, which leads me to ponder: Am I crazy to attempt this myself? If so, what should I do instead? If not, what type of memory should I install? Also, what do I do with the SSD currently in my computer if I install a new one? [more inside]

I have been running (off and on) for nearly 20 years, and completed a half-marathon about 10 years ago, albeit in an embarrassingly long amount of time. I have always run extreeeeemely slowly; currently, we're talking 4mph, though I can do so for a whole hour, and I do this about 4-5 times a week. It really seems like I should be able to do a 12-minute mile, at minimum, though, right? Right??? I feel like I'm missing some crucial step in understanding how to reach this goal. [more inside]
I have a condo with this 6'x6' window in a box jutting out from the side of the building with another sloping window at the top along its length. There's a baseboard heater right below the window, but the current location of the mini blinds traps the heat behind them, meaning the heater has to do more work keeping the room warm. How can I set up a shade that doesn't have this problem? [more inside]
A few years ago, I had One Of Those relationships, and ended up with an irrational distaste for health smoothies/shakes, among other baggage I am mostly successfully recovering from. I have a long history of physical illness. I have a chronic medical condition that causes frequent loss of work, which my boss knows. Seeking good descriptions of insurance jobs that are as gripping as I know they can be -- ideally, not life or health, but more like writing policies or investigating damage/loss to property. A fact-laden account of the work performed by real people would be best, but fictional is okay too. I remember television's Banacek, and the Thomas Crown Affair, as being interesting but not much about the nitty-gritty; incidental characters as in Groundhog Day (watch out for that pothole!) not as helpful. Thanks!

Okay, so I don't like recurring monthly bills. I've had a TracFone flip phone for a few years but they're discontinuing 2G service. You have bad news/concern about yourself. You tell someone about what's going on. The person says that it is your own fault - which is true, but seems like a variant of I told you so. You tell that person it seems like the wrong time to say that. The person doubles down on the statement. You walk away from the person - swearing to yourself that you won't ever talk to them about bad news/concerns about yourself. This feels like a big case of "I told you so", which I hate. How could this have gone better? [more inside]

I am coming to terms with some incidents of abuse in my childhood. I have an excellent treatment team. I am a logical, problem solving sort of person. I read various literature about the reporting of assault. Now, I feel confused. I do not understand why reporting these incidents to the police is something I should not do. What is it that stops people from doing this? I talked with the perpetrator, who remembers and agrees with my description of the incidents, but does not agree that they were criminal acts. I am reasonably confident that they were. I do not know if they would plead guilty were it to come to it. [more inside]

Last month, in Scotland, people were waving at friends across the way by extending their arms up and forming a hand-puppet shape with their hand. (With the 4 fingers parallel to the ground, at a right angle from the arm, thumb under the fingers. I have about 2000 images (100 GB of RAW+JPG) that I shot on my two week vacation. What's the best free or cheap software for reviewing and culling the best shots? My goal is to prune them down to my 100-150 favourite shots. [more inside]
I am a new owner of a brie baker, courtesy of my mom's de-cluttering efforts. Aside from baking brie a million different ways, is there anything else I can make in a brie baker, or is this a single-use item? If it matters, the brand is Village Gourmet, and its never been used. Google is failing me (I'm just getting the same brie recipes, no matter how I ask the question). Thank you!
I've been gardening and hiking in the Pacific Northwest for a long time, but I have never seen this flower. It was growing on a moist, shady bank under oak trees. What is it?

My husband's parents are divorcing and they are in their 60s. His mother has had ill health over the last 20 years and some mental health issues. The divorce has sent their finances into some disarray but they have not been open with us about the particulars. Now his mother is starting to ask for financial help – small things like splitting airfare for her to come visit. But she's also apparently enlisted his sister to buy presents on her behalf for the kids/extended family and then sent checks that bounce. My husband is very anxious about needing to financially support his mother but I don't like this gradual slide into support especially since we do not have a lot of extra money. [more inside]
I really love British panel shows. I want to volunteer in a cafe or lunch club for at least 3 months, partly from believing in the causes of the ones I am applying for, and partly because I need a current reference (we all do things for a mix of altruistic and self-interest reasons I guess). A couple of weeks ago while with a group someone took an order for 8 teas or coffees in their head including whether sugar or not and milk or not and I was mightily impressed! I'd like to be able to learn this with hypothetical orders friends throw at me for practice, and then demonstrate my ability at an interview for a voluntary job, but I need to know the memory techniques that make it possible. Baristas or chefs etc, how do you remember multiple things without constantly referring back to paper? [more inside]
We are going to be moving into a new house, and while the house is still empty and pregnant with possibility before we move all our stuff in, I was wondering if anyone had any advice for minor improvements they've done to a house that really made it feel homey or comfortable, particularly things that might be more inconvenient to do once we've moved in. We especially want to do better with organization because things are cluttered in our current house and it always feels chaotic. Links to pictures or websites would also be great!

Over the last few months I've noticed an annoying quirk with my iPad's autocorrect suggestions in iMessages/FB Messenger. It has started suggesting truly off the wall "corrections" for correctly spelled words, to the point where I started keeping a list. Some examples: I wrote "Anytime" and it suggested "Vanities." It has suggested "Vapour" instead of "Happy," and "Ochoa" for "Oh." I didn't even know what that last word was, so it's not like I somehow added it to my autocorrect dictionary. Hello All: I am looking for a light weight vacuum for home. I was thinking of stick vacuum like the link below. I have a small place, so I need a small vacuum that can fit in the closet. I have hard wood floors. I had a shark vacuum before that was an electric two in one and it worked great, but they no longer make it. Thanks! LINK.

I am renting a very large 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath house in a touristy area of New Orleans. I am considering renting out my guest suite on AirBnB for 1 or 2 weekends a month to make some extra cash. What do I need to be thinking about? Should I or shouldn't I consider this? [more inside]
His unemployment benefits just ran out, and he likes to use the coping skill of avoidance. He clams up for conversations about money or what he is planning to do. I'm pregnant and cannot support both of us and a child without overextending myself. I want to be supportive, because historically I have lost my cool around these issues. But I also don't want to be so supportive that he isn't motivated to do everything possible to fix things. [more inside]

Last year my okra had happy full leaves that kind of looked more like this. This year most of it looks like this. It's still producing okay but l imagine the plant would be happier if it had nice full leaves. Raised bed, good soil, no pests in sight - any ideas? It's been super hot - could that be it? Thanks in advance for any ideas!
Almost a year ago, there was a very public humiliation for myself and 50+ other people, mostly women, in our medium-sized town. It was sexual in nature. Now someone, unrelated, is literally making a musical comedy about it. Auditions were last week and the playwright is not responding to our very vocal opposition. What's the most effective way to stop, or thwart this? [more inside]
I was recently tested negative for a celiac blood test, yet an allergist applied skin testing and it appears that I'm allergic to rye. What does this mean? Should I avoid all breads, crackers, and pastas in general? I haven't eaten breads, crackers, or pasta in two years. I wonder if the celiac blood test could be a false negative, since I haven't eaten breads in a few years? [more inside]
My dad is dying of cancer. I live a very long way away and have a small baby with health complications who probably shouldn't be flying just yet. Should I go sooner to see my dad before he gets too bad and leave my little baby behind? Should I wait for the all clear to travel with the baby and risk my dad getting really sick or dying without me seeing him? [more inside]
We've finally saved up enough money to go on a little holiday, hopefully abroad, meaning outside the UK. The thing is, we have a five year old and a one year old, so the things we might like to do to have a relaxing holiday don't really apply as sitting relaxing beside a pool or on the beach with a book or newpaper simply wouldn't work. We also can't go somewhere really hot as our one year old would disapprove. We would never go to a "resort" and stay in a huge holiday complex whether we had young children or not! [more inside]

I took out a 12 month contract with Sky in early June. It's not getting installed until 26th July. I've changed my mind, can I cancel it? Does the contract start from when it's installed seeing as I'm not paying and don't have the service yet?

A friend of mine is taking a group of 20 high school kids to Orlando this month. Does anybody know of a good reliable company that will send a driver in a 20-30 seater on time each day to drive them to and from the airport, and around Orlando and surrounding areas while they're there? They're going to all the usual attractions, and all they want is a company that will show up on time, won't kill everyone onboard, won't traffic the students to an international crime ring and won't charge through the nose.

I've recently moved to a new city. I've met a few cool people that I'd like to make friends with, and I'd love to invite them round for brunch. The only problem is, since the last time I was doing this, I've reached an age where most people have kids. I'm totally happy to have the kids around but I don't know how to do it?! - what food for them, but also how to keep them entertained while the adults chat. [more inside]
My father has been diagnosed with cancer and will probably die within the next year (two years if we're lucky), all I think about is about his impending death. I'm an only child and, to me, his death will mean that I'm completely alone in the world. I am so scared of losing him, but I am literally helpless. I feel like I'm waiting for him to die and I don't know how to cope with it. Any advice? [more inside]

I enjoy taking in funny stuff as a relaxing escape from my intense social service job. Perhaps I can distill my personal sense of funny to: cerebral, not reactionary/racist/misogynist/etc, sometimes weird/surreal. I am a little bit snobby. I don't like violent comedies. Not so much looking for websites but that's OK in small amounts. International/subtitled OK! Please advise: [more inside]
Some time ago, there was a rendition of the Game of Thrones theme performed using squeaky toys. Apparently it has now been wiped off the face of the internet due to a copyright claim by Colosseum Music Entertainment GmbH (if indeed that is the one i am looking for). [more inside]
My father and I have a growing tradition of doing a hike in the White Mountains each summer, and we try for the biggest trek we can find time for. We're both experienced, but our condition isn't great. We've hit upon the idea of doing a Presidential Traverse—a 23-mile hike that summits ten(ish) of the Whites' tallest peaks. We think we're up for it if we take it slow (three nights) and plan carefully. Difficulty: we want to camp in the backcountry each night. [more inside]
Somebody ordered an unknown expensive object (UEO) from a large national retailer (LNR) with my wife's credit card. Our wonderful bank (OWB) believed us that it was not us and refunded our account. I'm in a new place, and my daughter just pushed the privacy lock on the bathroom door before closing it (she is outside the bathroom, thankfully). With most of these knobs you can just push something through the hole to pop it, but that is not working. There are no keys over the doorframe. There are no exposed screws on this side of the knob. The door hinges are on the other side of the door. Please help! [more inside]

Can you recommend a natural-beauty vacation locale that will be warm over (American) Thanksgiving? International destinations are fine but total travel time needs to fit into 5 days. Snowflakes: no (or not just) beaches, hiking should accommodate a range of fitness levels.

It recently has started to grow a few unusual nodule/bud things, and we haven't been successful at pinpointing exactly what they are from Internet research. We love kids' movies; hate watching a movie in a theatre with kids. Does anyone know any place offering a child-free showing of Finding Dory?
My ten-year old son wants to understand everything. He is a voracious reader and doesn't confine himself to kids books. He loves reading the newspaper (NYTimes, Boston Globe), fiction, and non-fiction books. He's old enough to really learn things by reading. Agatha Christie is fun, but he's ready for more than that. He's full of questions about society, politics, science, economics. I'd like to get him some books that will expand his mind, begin answering his questions, and show him how the world fits together. I have recently become responsible for keeping an old Nortel Option 11 on life support for the next 6 to 9 months as we transition to our new Cisco VOIP system. Hi, we have guests visiting us in Minneapolis for the 4th of July holiday weekend. We've got a minivan and designated driver and we'd like to drive around and visit a number of small breweries/brewpubs tomorrow. We took them to Indeed, Fulton, and 612 last time they were in town. Where should we go? Surly seems like an obvious possibility, but where else?
After moving from one corner of the country to the opposite corner 3 months ago, selling one house and buying another and spending $8000 on the move, we need to not live here because my spouse is absolutely miserable and staying will put considerable strain on our marriage and negatively impact our mental health (his in particular). I am very concerned about both the career implications of making a move so soon, and also that another move will put us into financial ruin. Snowflakes ahoy! [more inside]
So I took a job to change my life and industry back in January. There were extended negotiations and a massive interview process and even a couple of test (take home) that pretty much doubled as free work. In person, there was a lot of body language and communication I didn't get but I finally have now. The worst of it is, we're at the point where I said we'd renegotiate or I'd leave and now I find out it's all been blown to hell. [more inside]
