I do already plan to buy dinner specifically for these friends, and to pay for my own food the rest of the time.

Longshotfilter: I wanted to know what was the name of the show back in the 90's, that featured a final episode (or I think it was) based around this computer web system with a female voice. She instructed some teen to disconnect her because the human population was dying and there were only two left. Does anyone remember?

I have the proofs from my first book, and would like to cut out and make a collage of all the pictures, glue them to an old hunk of countertop that i can stick some IKEA legs on and make into a coffee table. I guess what I need is best practice as far as glue, and what to cover it in. I understand there is some sort of stuff you can spray/paint on to seal it...or I could go with the stick a hunk of glass/plastic across the top. any info will be greatly appreciated.

In Friday's issue of The Australian, the Entrepreneur lift-out had an article about two (Melbourne?) investment bankers who fell foul of the GFC then started their own clothing business, based on a wildly successful business model from France - something about factory seconds, or end-of-season stuff from high-end labels. I think they have something like 250,000 subscribers, and last month they turned over a million bucks. What was the name of the Melbourne start-up and what was its French inspiration?

How do I get my browser(s) to stop back tracking? When I use both Firefox and Chrome on my office computer, the browser will automatically flip back to the previous page (as if I hit the "back" button) after about 30 seconds. It will actually keep doing it until it gets back to the first page I opened in the browser. It doesn't happen with all web pages (Gmail and Metafilter seem fine), but it's particularly a problem with media sites (e.g. local newspapers, the Atlantic, Good Magazine). I mostly get around it by holding 'ctrl' when I click a link so it opens in a new tab and can't back track. But it's a pain in the butt. Is there a way to stop this?

I removed my range hood to replace it with a new one. The old range hood was duct taped to the duct which I guess carries the smoke from my cooking out the roof vent. The next day, the entire duct had fallen down onto the new stove. I pushed it up and braced it in its hole but now I need to put the new range hood on. Does anyone know how the duct work is supposed to be attached to the vent on the roof? I could duct tape it to the new hood then bolt the hood in place but that doesn't seem right. Some construction help please... Thanks.
At one airport, the scanner always beeps if I pass through without removing my shoes. The same scanner lets my colleague pass without removing shoes. At another airport, our roles are reversed. My three-year-old daughter just saw a dead guy. On our way to daycare we discovered a man who had apparently jumped from the top of our apartment building and died. Clearly dead, blue face, blood coming out of ear, but nothing "gory" per se. She only saw him for a second before I turned her away, but it clearly freaked her out a little. I tried to tell her he was just playing, but it's hard to tell what her inner reactions are. I brought her to daycare because I had little choice, and she seemed surprised or confused, like she had seen something she knew was Not Good but had no further understanding of. How can I help her avoid being adversely affected by this?

There's some game on the 360 that exists or was in development at some point in the past year that is a strategy game using hexagon shaped "towers" of land as a board. I think it was turnbased and used words (but not sure about the words part - but I think it involved a scrabble like setup) Somehow you would "stomp" the hexagon shaped towers and they would slowly lower until a certain point then they would fall making the play area smaller. My university (that I just graduated from) wants to purchase something like 20 of my photos to use for a new brochure they're making and also for the website. I have a good relationship with them and don't want to be a jerk overcharging them, and while I've sold photos to publications before at a fairly standard price of $150 for a limited use quater-page print, I think doing that for 20 photos might be much, especially since a lot of these are just photos I took during school and I haven't gone through the usual process of getting model releases for any of my fellow students. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has sold photos in "bulk" like this before and what might be a good price to charge.

A couple of months ago I bought a used 2007 Ford Ranger. I love the truck but it only came with one key. When I went to the local Ford dealer to see about getting a spare key made, they quoted me a price around $140 because it has the Ford SecuriLock chip built into it. That's a lot of money for a spare key, so I had a spare key made at a hardware store that will let me into the truck in case I lock my key in the cab, but if I would happen to lose my key, I'll be screwed. Is there anyway I can get a spare key from somewhere and program it to work in my truck's ignition without spending $140?

The flow from our (two-handled American Standard) kitchen sink faucet has recently changed slightly but annoyingly - when I turn on the water, it kind of tapers on, and similarly when I turn the water off, it tapers off, taking several seconds to completely stop flowing. This happens exactly the same for the hot and cold water taps, so I don't think there's a problem in the valves under the handles. The sprayer still works, though the switching of water to the sprayer and back when you press its handle is lagged as when you turn the water on and off. Any ideas what could be causing this problem?

I'm 19 years old, a guy. I was wondering what has happened to my sexual attraction. Typically during the college and high school years in the past, I used to be more sexually attracted to different guys (yes I'm gay). Right now it's summer break and I spend most of my time at home and not really in the presence of different people. Now when I occasionally go out, I don't seem to have the sexual oomph that I've had in the past. I do have success with my self, but it doesn't seem as strong as before. What is it a problem with? Is it low sex drive? Is it that I'm going crazy? Is it that I'm not seeing enough people? Is my attraction limited to types of people and is that normal? I think it is.

Looking for either really interesting music (Abner Jay) or incredible stories (Peg Leg Sam) from that era/place. Both artists considered themselves part of the last great Southern black minstrel shows. Where can I find more stuff like that?

Should my girlfriend and I move from NYC to Seattle? ComplicatedFilter: I'd have my current job relocated, she would not.
My (wonderful, amazing, perfect-for-me) girlfriend and I have been together 9 months (though we've known each other for several years), and are currently living together. Some background: I was born and raised in NYC, she's a transplant from Wisconsin (but went to college in Vassar). I'm 31, she's 28. Recently, my job has become frustrating and monotonous. Some of this is because the bulk of my department is located in Seattle. They recognize this, and have mentioned to me that it may be possible to relocate to the Seattle office and adjust my position. The gf and I are currently discussing the opportunity. [more inside]

I'm looking for resources on how to do this without dropping hundreds of dollars on antique planes or tools.

Dwight's Journal of Music, Boston, Sept 1, 1877, p. 84 (v. XXXVII no. 11). Do you know where this was first reported? Or do you have an earlier citation to a different person using comparable language? Perhaps it was in a German publication, which I can't read, but I'd still love to see it.

The consulate wants my passport to issue a visa but I am afraid I will not get it back in time: what to do?
I am in a bit of a bureaucratic bind and I need some advice. Short story: I leave for a trip in 10 days and at this point have no visa for the country that I will be living in for a year. The consulate just emailed me a couple of hours ago and informed me that I need to send my passport to them (who are located in a city 12 hours away) in order that they can issue me the visa. My boyfriend and I are about to take The Bar Exam in less than a week. A few days ago, my boyfriend was having severe anxiety attacks and suddenly decided he'd be better off at his folks' house. We talked about it, I supported it, and he flew home that night. Now I'm alone in our house and I'm freaking out dealing with my own depression and anxiety. I know (I know, I really know) that what happened isn't his fault, and that he needs to do what is best for him, and that this doesn't mean he doesn't care about me. But my irrational me keeps feeling abandoned. How do you get brown spots out of white furniture? We have white dresser drawers that we just bought my daughter. They are high end wood dressers from a company called Pulaski. There is some kind of laminate on it because it is very smooth. We put a CD player on top of it and on the bottom of the CD Player there are little rubber like pads on it so that it will not scratch furniture. It is a common, regular CD player and the pads look common enough. Our own clock radio in our bedroom has the same kind of rubbery pads on the bottom. So anyway, it has been very humid, and within a week of buying this expensive set, I saw brown stains in the shape of the round rubbery pads on the dresser. How do I get them out? [more inside]

Should i sell my books or keep them? We're moving to a smaller house. I own way too many books. Most are expensive and i won't be able to afford to replace them in any near future. I have loads of slipped discs and lifting loads of small boxes of books will be agony. I own hundreds of v.specialist books i might need IF i get a job needing a particular language, or onto a masters in that area of psychology. They're big, they're expensive (normally - i picked up cheap ones along the way for possible future use). I live in a remote rural area with no nearby shop, so they have to sell on Amazon in the next 4 weeks or go to charity shops, probably get pulped. I would use most of them eventually. There are also my massive language dictionaries: there are online dictionaries, but often i can't afford the internet, but i don't know if i will need ever them or not, depends what job i get (have had jobs abroad). Really, it's a philosophy of life question: gather no moss, be a free spirit? Or plan ahead, be cautious? Which works best and why? I probably saw it on HBO or the like sometime in the mid 80's. It was probably released around the same time.

When my girl returns from a 6 week trip, I want to do something cool and quirky and romantic for her as a surprise. Nothing necessarily big and tacky or public and embarrassing. Any ideas? She doesn't like "objects" too much -- she's more of a road trip, beach night, indie-mix-cd kind of girl. We write a lot, so I don't want to do anything like that. I made her a CD for the flight there, so not that either. It could be a gift, or an experience. We do not live together. It doesn't have to be something immediately when she comes back. I just wanted to do something sweet that was a little more out of the ordinary for us. [more inside]

You're taking a public speaking class at a college located in the U.S. The instructor advises the class that glasses are not to be worn when making a speech, because the audience needs to be able to see the speaker's eyes. What is the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of approx. 40 lbs. of meat that has been frozen for 7+ years? [more inside]
Most animals don't recognize themselves in a mirror. Yet, they obviously can recognize another member of their species. E.g., if you have a cat for a pet, and introduce a new cat into the mix, both will likely do more than just notice each other. Same with dogs. Cats, dogs, et al, are able to tell the difference between cat, dogs, et al. Obviously, this ability to distinguish members of your own species works out nicely, especially for breeding purposes. But, how does it work? How does the old cat in the house know that the new addition is also a cat and not a small rabbit?

Why do I feel like crap when I wake up from a nap? I love sleeping but hate napping (sleeping for less than 30 minutes) because almost without fail, I wake up disoriented, incredibly thirsty, and with my heart pounding, and it's deeply unpleasant. It feels sort of like a panic attack, actually, and takes me 10-15 minutes to recover from. Does this happen to anyone else? Why does it happen? The card machine also asks me that -- in fact it forces me to choose a payment type -- but my choice doesn't do anything (apparently). I choose debit and checking account, enter my pin number, decline cash back, accept the amount... and then the clerk asks, "Debit or credit?" And when I say "Debit," he pushes a button on his side of the counter. Why?
