Intellectual property question. A married couple are both coders who have the same software skills (let's say in coding OCR software). One spouse runs Company A (sole proprietorship, OCR software). The other works for Company B which is now contracting with Company C to work on their OCR code, so that spouse is being required by Company B to sign an NDA (no noncompete) which protects Company C's intellectual property. What do you call the opening quotes that often preface a novel? Many thrillers, mysteries, and what-have-you include a single quote in the book's front matter, something to capture the story's essence or set the stage. Sometimes these quotes are literary, and sometimes they're drawn from pop culture figures. But other than "opening quote," is there an official name? All the other pages and parts of a book have a formal name, but what about the quote?

Does anyone have experience/recommendations for any of those? Thanks!

What's a fair finder's fee for someone who sent me a buyer for my used car? The mechanic who services our family's cars is a super nice guy, and does a terrific job as well. Recently we mentioned to him that we were selling one of our cars (a 1998 Camry, if it matters), and he mentioned it to a number of his other clients until he found someone who was interested in buying it. The deal went down today, and I'd love to toss a few bills his way to thank him for his help. What's an appropriate sum and/or percentage? I was thinking $300, which is about 5% of the sale price of the car. What do you guys think? Oh, and I'd also like to say that I'm REALLY proud of the title I came up with for this AskMe. Thankyouverymuch.

I guess the question should really be, "how to overcome a MENTAL roadblock that has taken the form of a person?" I guess my situation can be likened to those age-old stories of someone not being able to forgive a parent for a bad childhood, and blames the parent for his/her failures. But my story is about an unwelcomed competition from a cousin, one that instead of facing I've always cowered to, and have thus grown in resentment and have become stifled as I continue watcihng my life unfold in misery, Wondering how to reclaim a personal sense of power regardless of her presence in my life, even though it seems it keeps "haunting" me. A friend has a 10-year old Lexus (with only ~50k miles on it!) that gets driven 2-4 miles per week. Is there any harm in this? (It is a second car for one person.) (sediment?) Would any other problems be likely?

I'm trying to remember what the title of this movie was. I think it was made in the 1960's or 1970's in the U.S. I remember watching it on TV on the Sunday Matinee show in the 1980's. The plot involved this millionaire who wanted to attack the Soviet Union, he had a small force which was to attack Russia by driving trucks across the polar ice cap. All I can remember was that in the end of the film his plan is thwarted by the Soviets, who send planes to bomb the ice, and the trucks sink to the bottom of the ocean. Any ideas?

I'm looking for examples of collaborative document editing. I've read through most of the older threads on this topic, but many of the examples seem to have gone out of business. Are there any newer examples out there? It would be good to have a document "owner" that integrates comments and changes from many contributors, so I'm thinking that a wiki might not be ideal. The ability to compare revisions is a must-have and it'd be nice to have it show not only text changes but image changes. Doesn't have to be hosted, or even online, though if it is, that's probably better. [more inside]

The caulk along the floor of our shower had started to get moldy after a couple years in a new house, so we removed it and recaulked (with a "kitchen-and-bath" adhesive caulk). Worked great along three of the four edges -- but the fourth edge, along the metal frame under the shower door where the 1" metal frame meets the lip of the shower floor -- wouldn't seal (wouldn't even cure -- was still mushy) after 72 hours. Pulled it up, and discovered that although the area had been dry to the touch, enough water had still been under/inside the frame to soak a paper towel slid through the joint between frame and the floor. She and her husband have plenty of family in the area so I'm sure they'll be handling meals, etc. The children's hospital is nearby so they won't be staying in a hotel or anything. Have any of you been through something like this? What helped you out during hours in the waiting room? (The irony is, I have young sons myself so I should be able to put myself in her place, but the whole idea of being in her place scares me so much I can hardly think about it.)

Please help identify this childhood book. I'm 90% sure it was english, otherwise it could have been written in spanish. The book was wider than tall, probably 15" by 10", very colourful but dark and weird at the same time. The only page i remember is one where s the main character is walking through a cave or forest and all these very interesting animals/creatures looking at him. (I think there's also page with just eyes surrounding him in the dark). The creatures are oddly drawn and very interesting and it was scary if anything. I believe this was a hand-me-down but eitherway I had it late 80's early 90's. I know the details are vague but i'm just hoping someone out there can bring me to peace. Thankyou

I have just read an article in the New Scientist about the Chile Whaling Conference. The article describes how Japan is allowed to catch 1000 whales each year for scientific purposes, yet has been accused of allowing some of the meat to make it's way to the dinner table. I lived in Japan a couple of years ago, and every supermarket seemed to sell small quantities of whale meat, and it wasn't a particularly rare sight in many restaurants. Would this meat be part of this, presumeably illegal, "for scientific purposes only", catch? Or do they have a separate quota for food use?

I believe i came to a complete stop but believe the officer could not properly see the sign or intersection from where he was standing. ( they seemed to be pulling lots of cars over: i watched three get pulled over in the short time i was stopped) How can i decide whether to contest this case? In my mind the key variables are: keeping a clean driving abstract so my insurance rates don't go up versus the hassle of going to court and potentially losing the case ( i am planning to photograph the site to see how strong my evidence looks and don't know yet). How would i discover whether this would affect my rates? In hawaii. Geico is the insurer

I'm trying to figure out how to be less paranoid and obsessive and how to not replay past and future negative scenarios in my head constantly – eventually getting myself in trouble. Often, I go over negative things that I've overheard or have suspicions about, and negative recent occurrences (like getting fired recently or conversations that might have left me in a bad light in someone else’s view). I feel paranoid about anything I cannot control and have ever had problems with perhaps. I was recently fired from a job for generally being too confrontational with my boss about things I saw going wrong and things I was feeling paranoid about. The thing is -- the paranoia is somewhat justified, and I have a hard time believing that it's possible not to worry about stuff all the time. And now at my new job I feel that I’m at risk of the same behavior, feeling jaded already about my new work situation and worrying constantly about everything in my life (and about not having a life, and even about worrying too much itself!) – how can I feel more relaxed and just chill out? Last week Obama eschewed the public financing system for the general election. It seems that many of the articles I am reading are saying that he is the "first major party candidate to reject public financing and its attendant spending limits." Do they mean in this election, or ever? If they mean "first-ever" (since public financing started) and public financing means a candidate can't raise private funds, then why is there always so much talk of candidates hosting various fund-raising events like $x,000-a-plate dinners? Are the publicly financed campaigns having their PACs raise money or what?

Brokenrelationshipfilter? Two weeks ago I found out that my girlfriend of a year had been seeing an acquaintance of my best friend for the past two months. They're over, and she told me, asking that we stay together. I'm not sure now if we're going to or not, but we agreed to six months more to see if we can make it work. I'm pissed, frankly, and she's suffering from horrible post-breakup depression; crying, insomnia, apathy, the works. I do, I believe, love her, but I'm having trouble seeing how we'll get through all the smoke in the air. How do I reconcile wanting to pursue what I want to do with the years I have left, with staying around in this area for my daughter (my ex has custody, zero problems with visitation, etc.). By the time she turns 18, i'll be in mid 60s+, which i know is not the end of the world, but...am i being selfish for wanting to pursue what I think will make me happy, versus "doing time" here just to be physically close to my daughter (we have a great relationship). Genuine feedback appreciated.

A good friend of mine called me the other day. He wanted to see me (he is a good friend, but I haven't seen him in many years, we live in different cities) and ask me for help. We met, and he told me his wife has cancer, one of the most difficult ones. He spends a lot of money in treatments, but he realizes that the chances are minimal. The worst part, he said, is that he is completely out of words for her. He doesn't know if he should try to give her hope, or if they should face the inevitable fact. He is despaired, she is more despaired. What can he say to comfort her? What can he say to make her feel better while she's still here? They have two daughters, 8 and 12 years old.

I just got my Macbook back from the Apple Store today after they replaced the logic board on the unit. I've noticed that every song I play in iTunes seems to skip. Finding this odd, I opened up the Activity Monitor and looked at disk usage. It seems like whenever a read to the disk is made, iTunes seems to begin skipping. Furthermore, I have the same problem after trying to play mp3's via mpg123. I'm worried that the skipping could be a sign my hard drive might be failing. I recently installed a brand new 250 GB hard drive from Newegg about a month and a half ago, so I'm somewhat skeptical. Is it a reasonable concern?

I use Outlook 2003 at work, and I have several rules created to automatically sort my incoming mail into specific folders. I usually create a folder for each department and sub-folders for each person within that department that I communicate with. My question is: Normally when an incoming mail message is recieved and sorted automatically into a folder, the folder's name changes to bold and a number is displayed in blue indicating the number of unread messages in that folder. An example would be I have a Jason Johnson subfolder in my Human Resources folder. The Jason Johnson sub-folder goes bold when I receive a message from him, but not the Human Resources folder it is contained within. Is there a way to make the "parent" folder go bold to indicate that a subfolder within it has a new message? I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance for your help.

I just reinstalled XP, and on first plugging in my little mp3 player / USB stick (a Samsung YP-U3), I declined to go through any of the "install new hardware" process, figuring it would just show up as an external HD and I could manage my files like that. Well, it doesn't - the display on the stick reads "connecting", then it connects, then straightaway the display assures me that the USB is safely disconnected. As far as my computer's concerned, it's invisible. Running the bundled software does no good either - the stick's just as invisible through the Samsung media manager program as through Explorer. On any other computer than mine, it works perfectly, and I can see it no trouble. So - is there any way to render my poor stick visible?

I have a job interview on Wednesday for a very interesting non-profit organization involved with animal research (for good purposes). All of my suits are skirt/jacket combos. I'm very short...too short for pant suits, and no time for alterations. The skirt suits wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have a huge tattoo on my leg. In my former career in creative arts, tattoos were acceptable and even commonplace. I'm not sure if this is a big deal with the new field. Nylons look silly over the work, and tights make me look like a little girl. Plus, it's very hot out. Is showing the tattoo something I should worry about? Do you think it will be viewed negatively? It's impractical for Mom to go home and come back between drop-off and pick-up, so she needs a place to study near the Institute. Suggestions please for a place to hang out and work - read, write and internet - within an easy walk of Chestnut @ Jones. This will be every day for the next month; low cost is essential. Maybe a library or better a laid-back cafe where not too much coffee needs to be bought. Wi-fi is needed too, preferably free.

SetPaintingFilter. When I was in college theatre, our sets were never finished until our company technical director walked the set, paint brush in hand, adding texture to the platforms with what seemed to be a very ordered splatter pattern. He'd do this alone, the night before we opened. The textures didn't take away from the set, but added depth. So what was he doing? I've seen the phrase "splatter wash," but can see no details on the method, the mix for the paint, anything. [more inside]

I'm heading off to college in a few months and I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the myriad of point-and-shoot cameras on the market. I ran through some pictures (well, actually many pictures) on Flickr to try and get a feel for what I was looking for, but some pictures are naturally more appealing than others and the quality is affected by various factors, so I ruled that method out as an objective option. I'm pretty sure more megapixels isn't always more quality and that there are other factors to account for, such as noise and shutter speed, but I'm at a loss at what really matters in a digital camera. I hope I don't sound completely uninformed, but I've scoured previous topics and while they're very helpful, they're a little outdated. I would really appreciate recommendations on a compact/ultracompact camera that takes pretty pictures! I'm willing to spend up to 300, but hopefully no more than that :) Thoughts? Suggestions? Jeers? :(
I'm planning on making gag gifts to sell at stores that contain dirty items, such as cigarette butts. I'm helping manage a project which has a lot of different document types contributed and edited by a lot of different people. Program code, bitmaps, text documents with homebrew markup code, PDFs, and a whole lot more all need to live together in the same repository. I was using SVN, but many of the people on the site are pretty non-technical. I had to switch to a mailing list from a real project management forum, because people weren't consistently able to get the RSS feed working for the forum. I know people are likely to say we should use a wiki, but I haven't liked any of them--they're great for documentation (and that is a lot we're working on) but they don't really handle things like programming code and desktop publishing files especially well. Ideally, the source control would look just like a local directory, and users could load and save files to it and the merging and versioning would happen transparently. As close to that as possible would be great. A specific wishlist is inside. Any ideas? [more inside]

I'm in a long-term relationship with an girl, and things are both great and awful. She's seriously dependent, I need my alone time. She wants a farm house in the middle of nowhere, I want to be close to the city. I'm the always-connected gadget-fiend type, she thinks tech is dumb. We could probably compromise on these, but we have some relationship scars and problems in the bedroom. But, we're on the same page on most moral issues, have a ton in common, and she's beautiful.
