I have a personal goal to do karaoke in the future. It's not because I enjoy making a spectacle of myself in public or want to show off my singing voice (to the contrary!), it's because I currently have severe social phobia. I think doing something that anxiety-inducing would be a great stepping stone and I'd also like to use that hopefully positive experience as a marker for how far I've come. What songs would suit an otherwise mediocre female voice that surprisingly sounds decent singing There Is A Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths and most of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen? I'd prefer if the songs are available on your average bar's jukebox, but feel free to suggest obscure songs. Genre does not matter.

Las Vegas Shared Housing Monthly Room Rentals... I realize that Las Vegas has been hit hard economically, but are these shared housing monthly room rentals I see on Craigslist for real... $350/$500 for what appear to be rentals in very nice single family homes, etc.? Thinking of "picking one up" as an inexpensive escape as a second "home"... feedback appreciated re red flags, etc. Or have I simply been out of the rental mkt too long and don't appreciate opportunities that exist...

Some time in the last 12 months, I watched a BBC programme in which the presenters visited an event held outside a pub somewhere in England. According to my vague recollection, the point was to fish a rag out of a bucket of beer using the end of a broomstick, and then fling said beery rag at bystanders. I had thought that the programme in question was Oz and James Drink to Britain, and that this had taken place in Lewes, East Sussex, but even with variations on those things as search terms I can find no reference to this online. Has anyone heard of this? What is it called? Where and when does it take place?
How Do You "Break Up" with Another Dude? I think I remember my present problem turning up on Seinfeld or Friends or something, which makes sense because it's kind of absurd. When a romantic relationship no longer functions, there are some established processes and social mores. When a regular friendship maybe needs to end or be heavily renegotiated, the way to proceed is much less clear. Help? [more inside]

About once a week, I wake up with a searing pain on the inside of my top knee (if I'm sleeping on my right hand side, it's my left knee that hurts). The only way to get out of it is to physically hold my knee, take the weight of my leg, and move it into a different / straighter position. Once I've done that, the pain completely goes away and there is no after-effect at all - I can get out of bed and run around with no residual pain whatsoever. But I don't think this is normal... Closer look here.

I finished reading Richard Belzer's hilarious book UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Don't Have to Be Crazy to Believe and it has gotten me interested in the JFK assassination. I then looked at a YouTube video that basically used a computer sim that showed the shooting coming from the book depository. My main question: Can any mefite recommend a book or three (of the million written) on the subject that they enjoy and find convincing on the assassination? I am open to any suggestions. Feel free to share your thoughts on the subject.

Why has the cost of milk gone up so rapidly, proportionally speaking? Five weeks ago, I could find milk for $2 a gallon; yesterday, the cheapest I found was $2.49 a gallon at Costco, and that was only if you bought two gallons at once. Everywhere else it's been higher - I even saw a store selling whole milk at $3.99 a gallon! This is just milk. Nothing premium or otherwise meant to raise the price point about it. Other dairy products have gone up in cost, too, but not so drastically (that I've noticed). [more inside]

A little over a hundred years ago, William James wrote in Pragmatism that "the philosophic stage of criticism [as opposed to the scientific] ... so far gives us no new range of practical power. Locke, Hume, Berkeley, Kant, Hegel, have all been utterly sterile, so far as shedding any light on the details of nature goes, and I can think of no invention or discovery that can be directly traced to anything in their peculiar thought." (Emphasis mine.) Is it still -- or, for that matter, was it true then -- that there are no inventions made possible by the works of philosophers?

Workout Question - A few years ago I went away from my cardio-only gym routine and added in weight lifting. I did chest press, lat pull downs, shoulder press, etc. I'm a girl, btw. I lost a little weight but now my arms are bulky, not super muscly but just bulkier and sometimes they don't fit in my shirts. I enjoy lifting weights but I feel conflicted about it if my arms are going to continue to get bigger and bigger. My question is - how do I continue to lift weights without my arms getting bulkier and bulkier? I would like to also make my arms less bulky if possible.. Are push-ups a good option?

One of my aunts has a slideshow of her life (meaning actual slides in a slide projector) that has been matched with some music on cassette tapes. My aunt's family would like this transferred to DVD. They lack the technical know-how and money to get this done, so they've turned to me for help. If I had time, I could convert the slides and cassettes to digital format. I don't have time. I do have money, though. Can you recommend a company in Portland, Oregon that will convert an analog slideshow to digital? Cost is no object, really. If there are no good options in Portland, I'm willing to consider shipping this elsewhere to get the work accomplished.

Am I missing something?

Where should newlyweds travel over the Christmas holiday? My fiancée and I are going to spend our first Christmas together as a married couple apart from our families. We are trying to decide where we should go. We aren't looking to do something on a super small budget (like no hostels, shared showers, etc.), but we also can't spend an obscene amount. We enjoy beaches, food, culture, and maybe some adventure. We are going to Mexico for our honeymoon so that is out. We are traveling from NYC if that influences your ideas. We welcome all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I struggle greatly with anxiety and am on a crazy amount of meds simply to sleep and relax. I am doing things to get through such as exercise, yoga and breath/meditating. One of the things that I read and have been implementing is answering 'cognitive distortions' with reality-based answers. Basically, I think I'm helpless (it spirals from an event to "I'm going to lose my job" all the way to "I'm not going to make it"). I've read the books like Feeling Good and do techniques on paper but am not sure how to think realistically and come up with any responses that I believe. This has been going on for some time. Any others who struggle and have tips on how you have tackled cognitive distortions (aka Bullshit Thoughts)? I am not in a hurry and am willing to put in solid effort. I am asking for help but am willing to try to believe I'm not helpless in the long haul. (BTW, I haven't been able to afford a counselor....yet.)

SO, my question is, are dangerous gases perhaps being released? I'm wary of course of getting aluminum in my bloodstream and catching Alzheimer's, but any other dangers I should know about?

I've just run Malware Bytes and run their Norton; Malware picked something up and killed it, but then it tried to install something again and I ran Norton, but that only found one cookie. Help?

I've had brain surgery that involved cutting out a quarter-size hole in my skull and peeling back the dura-matter and layers of other tissues, drilling through bones connected to my ear, then putting everything back with a titanium plate. The surgeon forgot to order pain meds. and I was in misery for two hours before the first shot. This was NOTHING compared to the migraine I barely endured two days ago. Unfortunately we lost some of the source code so recompiling it is not in the cards any time soon. Installing VM lite or the windows virtual pc is not an option unfortunately. These users would need access to this program concurrently. The VMWare solutions are far too expensive and the VMLite product that might help we won't be out for some time. Thank you for reading my post. Have a great one.

What are some good Chicago-area catering options for a group of 10 people? We are hosting a small group of relatives at our house for the weekend in May, and we want to have some classic Chicago dishes for people to eat. But, we also don't want to spend the whole weekend in the kitchen working on deep dish pizza, either. So, we're looking for suggestions on places to check out that we can bring food home for about 10 people. It definitely isn't "Tale Of The Bunny Picnic" (though that looks pretty cute, too). Bonus points if there's a streaming version anywhere online - I'd love to show this special to my bunny-obsessed niece. Thanks, all.

Ok I admit it, I’m a cheap drunk, a lightweight. One beer, one glass of wine, and I’m feeling good. Any more than that, even another half a beer or half a glass of wine, and I’m starting to get buzzed. So I’ve always been very careful with my drinking. I’ve never been stopped for suspected DUI, and don’t plan to be. That said, I’m curious about whether my blood alcohol level actually increases more quickly than most people, or do I just feel the effects of the alcohol more quickly without my blood alcohol level rising very much. IOW, over a period of an hour, you drink two beers, you’re not drunk, and your blood alcohol level is below the legal limit. I drink two beers in an hour, I’m pretty buzzed, enough that I would not drive. Is my blood alcohol level probably over the legal limit? If it matters, I’m a fairly normal-sized adult female, 5’5”, 120 lbs.

It's a combination of the "it's hard to learn when you're old" thing, the "rural place so no dual carriageways" thing, and the "oh my all those cars seem to go so fast" thing. What can I do to make this easier? Are there any "learning to drive for dummies" books that are worth getting? Or should I just stop panicking, bite the bullet and book myself some lessons?

Can anyone identify these splats? My friend found them in her Ann Arbor MI (USA) townhouse after having been away last weekend. They were on windowsills as well as the bathroom floor. In addition, a few small items on top of a tall piece of furniture were knocked over. While she was gone, the interior motion-sensor of her alarm system went off twice, but the service tech found and replaced a bad wire, so this may or may not be related. We assume it's animal droppings of some sort, but have no idea beyond that. Can you help?

I had a tooth extracted last week and despite being on antibiotics for four days, it's infected, and the infection has spread, making it painful to swallow. The solution: a different antibiotic has been prescribed. I don't like antibiotics, so my question is: what would happen if I just didn't take the damn things, took the painkillers, braved it out and waited for my body to handle it alone? Would that just be stupid? I appreciate that it's probably hard to advise without specific details, but any comments welcome.

What is the best photographer fee approach for portrait photography? Mrs. dyno04 is getting into the photography business and is trying to figure out how to best price sittings, prints, etc... We don't really like the sitting fee + price per print approach. So we are thinking about either a sitting fee + price per print + after X amount of prints receiving print release rights or sitting fee includes print release rights. If you were going to pay someone to take pictures (she is targeting babies, families, possibly pets), what kind of fee structure would you like to see from a photographer?

If it matters, I'll be recording musical performances in a controlled environment.
I have been dating the same man for 4 years. We've been monogamous for about 3 and a half years. When we became monogamous, I had the full round of STD testing done, all negative. Since then, I've had regular yearly pap smears that included testing for HPV. All negative. Until today, when my doctor called me to tell me that the pap smear I had last week tested positive for HPV. [more inside]

I got a spam email from my friend who has a hotmail account. It looks like the spam has been sent to everyone in his hotmail distribution list. My question is, how did the hackers do this? Did they need his password in order to get access to his distribution list? As far as I know he is still able to use his account which puzzles me. Wouldn't a hacker (if he had the password) quickly change the password so that they could keep sending spam out on that account?

Is it worth it at 40yrs. old to take out student loans and go back to school full-time for 2 years? The profession I am interested in has a starting pay around 45-60K and is in the healthcare profession, so jobs are plentiful. I would be taking out about 30K in loans and of course, losing my current salary. My spouse and I both make pretty good money, we have a 4 month old child, we own a home and have 2 car notes, but no other debt. Considering these factors is it worth it to take on that amount of debt at 40 to make that kind salary? Is having a more satisfying career, being a happier person, parent and spouse (not that I am unhappy personally, just very dissatisfied with my career) worth the loss of salary and debt? Is that fair to my family?

I have Strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes which causes double vision. It's a condition I've dealt with my whole life but which had largely only manifested itself during periods of above-average tiredness, fatigue, or intoxication. As I passed through my 20s and now into my mid 30s, the condition has worsened to the point where it affects me every day, and I want to fix it. I'm considering eye muscle surgery, but I'd like to hear some personal accounts as to the effectiveness of this treatment. Positive or negative experiences are welcome, as well as non-surgical treatment ideas.

I built and maintain a fairly basic website for my daughter's nursery school, and I need to know the simplest way to integrate a blog feature (to be utilized by the teachers), as well as a way to allow the school's director to make updates from time to time to a particular page of content without having to teach any of them how to use Dreamweaver CS4 (this is key), which I use to maintain the site. I am by my own admission more of a designer than a coder (the technical stuff is not my strong suit), and on top of this I have a pretty limited time frame in which to accomplish this. Other than hiring someone else to do it for me, can anyone offer suggestions? I thought about using Wordpress - either integrating it into the site as is, or starting over and rebuilding the site in Wordpress. But I haven't come to any conclusions yet (obviously!).

We have a two-year old sofa that looks terrible and needs to be cleaned. The upholstery is 100% light-colored polyester that looks like linen. The problem is that any water leaves a very noticeable ring on the fabric. Although we're pretty good about keeping food and drinks off the couch, we have a very drippy-nosed greyhound who has left dozens of little drip marks all over the cushions. Cleaning with water and a wet rag only makes the problem worse. I also tried using Goddard's Dry Cleaning fluid (a solvent), which just left a whitish spot. Any suggestions? Would hiring a professional do the trick?

About a year ago my cat developed the habit of chewing on fabric. I can't leave clothes anywhere in his reach now, because anytime I do he chews on them (I have had to throw out many articles of clothing due to this.) My bedding is also full of holes, and I'd like to get new blankets and sheets but know there would be no point as long as he'd just chew them up too. I can't spray my whole bed with anything bitter, and I'd really prefer not to have to start shutting him out of the bedroom because he usually sleeps at the foot of the bed. What can I do to end this behavior? Help
