TheGlitz&GlamourOfHollywoodFILTER: I’m part of a small start-up that films celebrity interviews and slaps sponsor’s logos on them. Well, in theory, anyway. Up till now, we haven’t had any sponsors. I've been receiving a lot of strange calls/voicemails from equally strange old men lately, who are all horny as hell. They're responding to text messages they say they received from my number, and these texts are evidently of a porny nature. But I haven't sent them! I can't find evidence of any such texts whatsoever. I actually tried to talk to one of them to find out if the texts are actually FROM my number or if they just MENTION my number, but the guy was so flustered and embarrassed that all he'd do was stumble over his own tongue trying to protest his innocence. So, what's happening? Is this a known scam? Can I do anything about it other than change my number? [more inside]

Business etymology: When and how did the word "project" get turned into an all-purpose business word? Why does it seem that "work" is now just a series of "projects." Is this word choice shifting the way business is done, or is it the other way 'round?
I am considering a wooden ship model as a housewarming gift, the giftee just bought a grand old Connectcut home on the water and loves sailing ships--and has nothing like this at all. I know nothing about these models, but see that there are many sellers online. I am willing to spend money for something that is great. It appears that models of classic America's Cup yachts are popular (and do appear impressive). Any suggestions? what ships are best? Ok to buy online? a good gift?

Real Estate Pricing Strategy Question. So we're looking to sell our condo in San Francisco. After meeting with a broker, he said that we should ask $575k - $625k. He showed us numerous "comps" that seem to support his suggested price. But ours does have some unique features that make me think that it could go for as much as $650k. But I'm not a real estate professional. Considering that a broker, even one we trust (he came highly recommended) is motivated to make the sale quicker, does it stand to reason that based on his range, a higher price is reasonable, even if it means that it takes longer to sell (and the broker has to work harder)?

Starting in about a month, my wife and I will both be working from home a fair amount. We are both on the phone a lot. We want to pay as little as possible and are trying to figure out how to deal with the phone situation. I currently use Google Voice and make and receive most of my calls on the home phone, which works well for me. I'm not sure how to deal with the apparent need for 2 phones. Both of us have cell-phones, but we're on the phone so much that we'd rather not be on the cell phones all day. We could obviously just get a 2nd Google Voice number for incoming calls, but I'm not sure how to deal with receiving or making calls while the other person is on the home phone. Thoughts? Should we get a Skype or Vonage number? Just get a 2nd landline? Any good free/cheap options that I'm missing? We're in Portland, OR if that matters. Thanks!

I am a guitar player who has a hard time playing in front of other people. When I play by myself, I am really pretty good but as soon as someone enters the room or I am in front of even a small number of people, my fingers freeze up, my mind goes flying and the music doesn't work. I do want to play in local open mikes, so I am not seeking stardom for sure. I just want other folks to enjoy the music I make. Suggestions?
Why does iTunes hate me? Not me specifically, but my iMac G4? Twice in the past month, I have had to wait as my entire iTunes library loads, as if it is loading for the very first time. iMac G4, 1GHz, 1.5Ghz SDRAM, OS 10.5.8. iTunes 9.1.1 just installed. 235Gb music files on 750Gb USB external drive. After several years of soul searching, I have decided that at best, I'm agnostic, and am borderline atheist. The main reason can be traced to too much skepticism and rational thinking - I simply don't believe that a supernatural god can bend the rules of nature. Then they directed me to an AT&T Wireless retail store to go buy the equipment. But can they force me to buy one of their routers? What if I can find a comparable one cheaper somewhere else? Can they refuse me customer service or deny me installation help (which I will need - I'm hopelessly n00bulous in this department) if I don't by an "official" AT&T router? [more inside]

Is there anywhere online where I can commission a poem? I’d like to set a price, pick a topic, pick a format, and get a poem in return. Sort of a work-for-hire thing where I own the product. (If I ever did anything with it, I’d always give full credit to the author, but having to deal with royalties sort of defeats the point of commissioning the work.) I know there are places to do this with code (rentacoder) or products (ponoko) or even design and music (crowdspring and musikpitch*), but is there anything analogous for writers? [more inside]

I'm a mid-twenties, relatively-tall, relatively-fit (6' 1", 180 lbs...but I run a lot) guy who has a shirt problem. During the colder months I really like wearing long-sleeve cotton shirts as a sort of base layer under other things. My problem? I can't find any brand that fits...either the arms are too short, or the shirt maker seems to presume that I'm going to have a beer belly to go along with my longer than average arms. I.e., what I'm looking for is something like the small size of this, but with longer arms. I realize I could get larger shirts tailored down or go the bespoken route, but both of those options seem kind of overkill for what should really be a pretty standard product. Are there any brands that serve guys in my size by default? [more inside]

The area I live in is artsy but fairly economically depressed. As a result, there are some cheap strip mall type storefronts and office spaces available. Since I've always wanted to go into business for myself, I'm especially tempted now that their are some inexpensive places available. The main questions is this: What types of business thrive in "poor areas" ? I've thought of the obvious ones; Liquor Store, Gun Store, Coin Laundry, Check Cashing, Cash Advance, Tax Prep & Porno Shop, Buy Here Pay Here car lot. None of these really interest me. Can you help me think of some other types of (legal) business that tend to thrive in poorer areas? Thanks!

I've had serious depression for bassically my entire adolescence which has steadily been getting worse. After a particularly bad episode last year I went on a high dose of venlafaxine which triggered, what I'm now realising was hypomania. It was actually a pretty great experience - it bassically just made me really high functioning. I didn't do anything irrational or dangerous and I made tons of friends and did lots of creative work. That's worn off and now I'm depressed again. Does this mean I'm bipolar? I've had depression for a long time but I've never had anything close to a manic episode that wasn't triggered by drugs. If I am bipolar, are future hypomanic episodes likely to be as pleasant or could it turn into full blown mania? My uncle's bipolar I so I know what that's like.

I have an antique copper pot that has lost its luster. It's an ordinary enough saucepan, but it was made and then brought from Russia by my great-grandparents in the 1880s. My own parents just recently passed it on to me and I'm proud to display it in my home. But it is rather dull-looking and is not as pretty as it could be. I would love some advice about how to polish it. I'm not interested in restoring it to a point where it looks like a knockoff, I'd just love to reveal the warm coppery glow I'm sure is lurking under the dullness.

His idea is, once he has a lot of people in the group, he'll have a URL set up with ads on it, which he can tell his group to click on. His question is: what's the next step? He doesn't have a bank account yet, he's not sure how best to stake out a URL, how to parlay clicks into his college fund, or if there are other, more effective ways to implement this. And I am of little to no help; what steps can I take to help him?

Just looking for some opinions on the housing market, specifically the condo market in Chicago. My husband and I are considering a purchase - we are renters now - before the tax incentives expire. We are living on a fixed income now. A longer term ARM, 7/1 or 10/1, seems to offer the best rates, but as we don't want to sink our whole nest egg into a down-payment, we are a little worried whether the market has really bottomed out and what will happen after all the incentives for first-time buyers disappear. I'm strongly considering putting in a offer on an income-restricted HDFC coop apartment in Brooklyn. I just straddle the income limits for 2009, but am well below it for 2006, 2007, and 2008, and the agent has assured me that won't be a problem, given the board an lawyer for this building (meeting the spirit of the regulations, if not the letter). I can afford to put down a large enough down payment so my monthly costs end up being slightly less than what my rent is now (with significantly more stability in cost from year to year). cmchap and I intend to spend this summer in San Francisco, but we still haven't found a place to stay. We're both undergrads, so we figure looking wherever undergrads (specifically Stanford or UCBerkeley) live during summer classes and the like is a good start. The question is: where does the Stanford or UC Berkeley undergrad population that stays in off-campus apartments for the summer live? Additionally, if we can't find anything there, where should we look next? Or, more importantly, where should we avoid? Neither of our jobs are location specific, but we'd like to be near public transportation. Thanks!

Now, we know we'll get sick of the hotel scene by night 3 or night 4 (but have already paid for it and are getting a good deal), SO can anyone recommend a nice cottage/B+B/lodge where we can go to wind down our vacation, somewhere relatively luxurious (no more than $400/nt please) and not packed with tons of people? FWIW, I looked on VRBO and there are sooo many choices my head spun. A lodge would be fine and if you happen to know of any vacation rentals that would be good too. I found this previously and have contacted the 2 places mentioned...they're taken! Anyone been to or know of the type of place I've described? Many thanks in advance!

I once read something, perhaps a comment on this very site, that compared the united states to a ten year old boy. It might have made similar nation to person comparisons. I'm allergic to cats. I've been to an allergist and gotten the expensive, full-panel series of sensitivity tests to objects ranging from grass to (it seems like, after so much effort) spaghetti and meatballs. Only cats trigger my symptoms. I know that extended allergy shots are a possible solution, but there's no way I can afford them. I've read about sublingual (under-the-tongue) treatment with allergy drops (with extract of cat dander.) I can't find a local doctor (Los Angeles, amazingly) who offers this. But it seems pretty straightforward - get the drops and do it myself. Bad idea? Where can I get the drops? Thanks.

Why am I so emotionally attached to someone that I ended a relationship with? Six months ago I broke up with my daughter's father for the third time. The first two break ups happened before my daughter was born so my feelings are not simply for the obvious reason of us sharing a child together. He is such a wonderful person; I look up to him, he is smart, caring, and we have a similiar outlook on life; morals, values. However, whenever we are together, I lose all physical attraction for him and everything he does drives me insane. He has never put an effort into our relationship. We don't share the same sense of humor and I have never felt like he was my partner in crime, something I always hoped my life partner would feel like. [more inside]

My best friend and his girlfriend both seem to have a rather unhealthy relationship with food. This isn't currently at a critical level for either of them, but I think in the past it has been, and I'm worried that it could get like that again. Where all the bad guys are perfectly bad, all the heroes completely virtuous, and everything absurdly predictable within a certain trite political worldview. I feel like 'melodrama' doesn't quite get to it, and neither does 'propaganda.' The film equivalent would be 'Crash' I guess (not Cronenberg's, of course).

Of course, the universe being as it is, I've found myself in a situation where I've fallen pretty badly for a coworker who reciprocates my feelings. We cannot decide if this is worth pursuing. I have a wonderfully large dataset that I'm working with for a long-term project. I am analyzing a small section the dataset for my masters thesis. In meeting with my thesis advisor last week, she suggested I run some statistical tests of significance on the 4 tables I'm working with. She knows that I am yet to be versed in quantitative analysis methods (I've done solely qualitative work thus far) and that I'm under a massive time crunch to get this done. She suggested I seek help from others, as she doesn't want me to get bogged down with figuring out this step, and would rather I concentrate on analyzing the other aspects of this data. To this end, I'm wondering if somebody might be able to suggest the best type of test of significance to run, the easiest way to run it, and a good, simple resource for what the resultant values mean? For the past 3 years, off and on, I've had pain in the left shoulder blade area, radiating toward my left rib cage. There are no triggers like breathing or laughter. What I feel is sharp stabbing spasms at unpredictable intervals. It is mild in the morning, intense by evening. Usually icing takes care of it, but not always. I've seen my doctor, gotten massages, gotten acupuncture, tried exercise and stretching -- but the pain returns. Massage helps most. Any ideas, hive mind?

The part in question just slides right off. The part that attaches to the shower door is hard plastic. The "squeegee" part is somewhat flexible. Can anyone help me find a replacement?
