Probably a common story: I graduated with a liberal arts degree and a mediocre GPA from a mediocre college a few years ago. Now, after working for a few years, I've grown a lot and I've realized that I'd prefer a "hard science" career - and I'm seriously considering med school. [more inside]
I found an old bottle Anchor Steam porter in my basement today that had a copyright date of 1974. Possibly stupid question, but would this be drinkable? The cap does not seem to have been disturbed or altered at all.

Does the Americans with Disabilities Act apply to landlords who accept Section 8 Vouchers?
I have Leopard and Windows 7 (7057) installed on my Late 2007 (possibly older, I got it refurbished) Macbook Pro 15". My problem is, every time I boot into either OS, I get a kernel panic or BSOD respectively. The fact that it happens in 2 different operating systems makes me almost positive that it's a hardware problem. Unfortunately, I don't know very much about computer hardware, so I don't really know what to troubleshoot first, and I don't want to void the warranty by opening the case (I plan to take it to the Apple Store if nobody here can solve the problem). Specifically, either operating system will crash about a minute into booting up. I don't think the problem can be too serious because everything graphically looks fine and all my files are intact. This leads me to think that maybe it's a RAM problem, and that it runs out of memory and crashes during bootup. [more inside]

I'm reapplying to college six years after dropping out. I left, in part, because I had developed a drug problem. Bloglines is broken again. When it works, rarely, seldom perfectly, even then not for long, it's an excellent service. I dislike Google reader, it lacks, for me, the ease of reading. Maybe I need to try harder. But I wonder why someone doesn't buy Bloglines and make it work. Who ever runs it now can't seem to do it properly. Why doesn't someone buy it and fix it, or why isn't there a competitor that provides a reader that works. Besides Google reader are there any readers out there I don't know about?

My wife and I will be in LA for a few days (June 26-29) on the way to Hawaii and I have a few questions. I looked at some old posts but couldn't find a good answer.
- Is there a reasonably priced hotel that we can stay at that help us get places easier (see question 2)
- Do we have to get a rental car or will public transit be ok even if it's slow
- Is there anything can't miss on that weekend I haven't heard of from half a country away
I need recommendations for where to take interesting pictures - I love taking photos of flowers, shadows, interesting architecture, people (candid, mostly) but I'm also getting bored with the first three. What are some things I can take pictures of that are interesting and challenging? I'd like to experiment with pictures of things in motion, urban decay and grafitti. Bonus points if you can recommend locations in and around San Antonio, that are free, open to the public and where I can spend a lot of time (ps- already did the Tea Gardens).

I'm a freelancer who mostly lives by writing web content on a wide variety of topics for very low pay. By doing this for some time, I've learned quite a bit about SEO, social marketing, and so on. I also know a bit about web design and the technical skills required. So, I'm thinking it would be really nice to go into business for myself instead of making a small percentage of the revenue that my content generates...but the one aspect of this that I really don't know anything about is the business aspect. For example, figuring out how likely it is that this plan could be feasible at all, and what my overall strategy should be. [more inside]
I've got a holocaust survivor coming, and I get to ask one question. For some reason, I can't think of a question. We've covered most of the stuff in class, and I just can't think of anything to ask him. He's 82 btw, and hes coming to my college.

Advice: Do I move to Colorado? My wife and I live in Boston. She is going to change jobs. I have a good job. Almost all of our college friends live nearby. We are very happy. However, we feel like we'd really like to move out west, where some other friends and family are, just to try something new. I'd rate Boston an 8/10, and my Job here is an 8/10. Colorado would be a 10/10 location. I don't know if I could find an 8/10 job out there... So the question is: "Is it worth sacrificing a good job for perfect location?" (I know every locale has its warts, but I've wanted to live in CO since I was about 5, and visit about 3 times/year already). Thanks for the advice! Rob

Could anyone recommend me a pair of cheap (under $50) and very durable headphones for lending out at a library? It should be designed with the goal of surviving some gratuitous quantity of abuse and then being cheaply replaced. Other criteria include around-the-ear cups, a long (3m minimum) cord, and a standard (2.5mm?) computer audio plug. Noise cancellation, great fidelity, and adjustability not essential. Pretty is a downright disadvantage, since we don't want people walking off with them. What happened to those massive abominations of puke-colored shatterproof plastic we used in elementary school, that could facilitate a multimedia class and a game of catch equally well?>

Since I last posted I've been feeling much better, but now have very new and strange symptoms. I've been seeing flashes in my vision, felt like I was misreading text or having difficulty expressing myself verbally (words came a bit more slowly than usual), and went to the ER when I saw (and a friend confirmed) my pupils were unevenly dilated. I've also had a recurring, painless rash of tiny red dots that is only ever present on my right hand, and comes and goes rather quickly. All symptoms started two or three weeks ago. I can't see a doctor for a week or two, but when I can, what kind should I see and what should I ask about? [more inside]

How can I cool off my NY studio apartment this summer? Our building has central air conditioning, and while it's cold enough when I sit right next to the unit, the rest of the apartment gets boiling hot. During today's heat wave, when it was 82 outside, a thermometer sitting on the unit read 70 degrees. On the other side of the room, it was more like 75, and on the other side of of the apartment, almost 80. The building doesn't allow window air conditioners. This is making living here really uncomfortable -- what else can I do to cool this place off? [more inside]

Generating XML documents help? I work with the county health department, and have been asked to come up with a way to create, store and manipulate metadata for various datasets we store internally on a network drive. Preferably I can do this with infopath 2003 or free software, and using the Dublin Core standard for metadata. I've seen the 5 year old answers on Dublin Core Metadata from this Ask, but I need to let my coworkers create the data first, and that mostly covers storage/database solutions. I also feel like I'm being stabbed in my urethra, constantly, and my bladder area and kidney are very tender to touch and ache constantly. UTI, right? Apparently not. More inside. [more inside]

How do dancers achieve body flight? I'm amazed at how many pros in dances like Carolina shag and west coast swing look like air hockey pucks gliding across the floor, and I'd like to learn this skill. I have worked with local pros in private lessons, but nothing has clicked yet, and so I'm asking the hive mind for drills and breakdowns to develop this degree of body flight. Theoretical explanations of how body flight and glide are created are welcome, but my primary interest is practical: I want to learn how to do this!

Name this book, I thought it was a Stephen King book, but going through a list of his books, I couldn't pick it out. Basic story line: A group of people traveling through the northeast after some sort of outbreak that turned folks into mostly zombie types, who initially only come out at night... There's a residential school that some of the travelers come from (boy's school?). One individual is searching for his wife and son who may or may not be infected.. The group is looking for sanctuary....... They arrive at a huge gathering of the "zombies", there's a bomb involved at the end... Someone PLEASE tell me what this book was!

Does anyone know of a local bike shop in India, at least connected to email, who will ship small amounts of bike parts by mail out of the country? It seems to me a local shop would have access through the normal distribution channels to parts from the big companies in small quantities. This stuff is vital to repairing old British bikes, there being virtually no domestic manufacture there anymore. I know that there exists lots out there from bikes that have been parted out, but finding who has it when you need it is difficult.

What movie did I see at least 10 years ago? (probably more) There were cannibals who kept their victims alive and just cut off arms or legs as necessary. One guy tried to escape and went hopping off on his one remaining leg. He was missing either one or both of his arms, and had this hopeful look on his face like he was really going to make it. One of the cannibals stood up and walked after him with an annoyed look on his face. I don't think the movie was about cannibals, this was just one small scene that has been haunting me for years. I'm hoping if I can identify the movie maybe I can purge the scene from my mind and never ever watch it again.

What about 20 minutes? Fifteen? An hour? Would I be better off just getting up and having that much extra time in my day? [more inside]

My daughter (age 4) is convinced we visited a website - with the following components: You choose a character - boy or girl; a professor gives directions; the chosen character comes out of a "pod" at the start. It probably plays out tamagotchi style: feed the avatar, play with it, keep it happy and healthy etc. That's about all she can remember. Now, of course, we can't find the blimmin' thing - so, I appeal to you.

For a while I have been using the SETI@home screensaver. I do not know much about computer science but my understanding is that the purpose of the program is to create a virtual super computer by breaking up packets of information and then sending them out to all of these computers all over the world which then run them through the program and send back the information. So you end up having the same computing power as a super computer through a large number of home computers. I think this is a fascinating concept but I have 3 questions: 1. How much additional energy does this utilize? I mean is my computer now using the same amount of energy as when it is normally running? 2. Do limits to this system exist? IE what can this kind of system not do that a super computer could? 3. Anyone know of any other programs like this which allow your computer while you are not using it to be searching for knowledge?

I'm trying to identify a book. The book was called, I believe Aeroflot, and it was a diary written by an American expat running a bar in Paris just after WWII. The book's packaging was a brown cardboard restaurant ledger on which the diary entries were written -- it was bound in a tall, narrow pad of restaurant cheques. My attempts to search retailers for "aeroflot paris" have only turned up aviation-related books. From what I recall the book was published in the mid-90s, but I don't have an author's name. Does this ring any bells?

I'm giving a big presentation in a couple of weeks and it has to be impressive. I have a fabulous idea for a graphic, inspired by the facebook friend wheel, where I want to wrap perhaps 100 words around a circle and draw lines to connect them in illustrative ways. The drawing lines part is easy, but the wrapping text around a circle part is hard (without doing it one element at a time, rotating and aligning each one just so). I *know* there's an easy way to do this, but am not quite smart enough to figure it out in omnigraffle or find another program that can do it. I can use Mac or PC. If you point me to a workable solution, you'll get your name in lights (if you wish) in addition to my unending gratitude.

Hi All, I just got a second monitor at work. Yay me! My second monitor is a widescreen (my main one isn't). I'm still getting used to it, at the moment I have put email on the right hand screen, and everything else still in the main one. I'm only really struggling with Citrix applications - they seem to like to pop up in the middle, splitting across screens. But I'm after any dual monitor on Windows tips in general. I've already installed the free MultiMonitor Taskbar which I really like. Thanks!

I need ideas for modern groomsmen gifts. My groomsmen don't really smoke, drink, golf, or wear french cuffs, which eliminates 99% of the results for "groomsmen gifts" from Google. Mainly our common interests include coffee, photography, design, and vaguely geeky 30-something interests (1980s Spielberg/Lucas movies, Tron, Atari 2600, Apple products). (We're not the kind of geeks that wear the term with some sort of goony pride, so ThinkGeek is right out. So are things like knives, flashlights, and AirSoft toys) Any ideas?

My front yard slopes down from the street to our house and driveway. There's always a wet streak on the driveway where water from the yard is moving over the driveway to lower ground on the other side. I'm looking for a way to determine if the water is rain runoff or maybe is from our septic tank's field lines which are in the front yard. The amount of water increases after rain and slows down during drier times, but never completely stops. I've tried smelling the water and muddy dirt but I can't be sure one way or the other. Is there a cheap but reliable way of finding out what kind of water this is? Thanks.

Three-part Question: 1. How much is a 2004 Volvo XC70 with 103000 miles on it worth? Craigslist and Cars.com suggest in the $8000 - $14,000 2. I own the car and don't need to make any payments. Assuming insurance, etc. will remain relatively the same, at what point does the annual cost of maintaining the car become excessive? I currently pay around $3000/yr to maintain it. My sense is that I'm past the value threshold for this car. (Hint: I think the trade in threshold occurs BEFORE repairs equal the total value of the car). 3. I love the Volvo in principal: All Wheel Drive, Lots of Cargo Space, Comfortable Interior, but hate it for practical reasons outlined above. Please help me find another car. Or maybe they're a different kind of chicken? Or maybe it's something else? I obviously tried googling, but I couldn't come up with a good string of keywords. Is this really obvious and I'm missing it? Help please!
