I'm a video game designer looking to switch careers and maybe/maybe not industries in the near future. I'm looking at a specific program for a computer science degree and want some input from general software engineers and video game programmers (or others with relevant knowledge) on whether this program will adequately prepare me for the switch. Specifics inside. [more inside]
I'd like to find a way to collect data from continuous integration builds for a non-profit project and graph the execution time of multiple tests in the simplest way possible without requiring manual intervention. The codebase is Python and source is stored in BitBucket. Can spend a little money but I definitely don't want to do anything that involves talking to salespeople or a complicated infrastructure project. Ideally, I'd post a set of data over HTTP and there'd be a publicly accessible URL where people could see the results of tests by commit. [more inside]
In my childhood, I was given a set of classics, about 12 volumes. These were children's versions of classics like Tom Sawyer. The trick was, there would be one book on one side of the volume, and another one the other-- upside down. So I'd read one story, then turn the volume over and read the other book. I want to find a set of these. [more inside]
Looking for the name of a YA book series about people who, unbeknownst to them, live in a dry Mediterranean basin; and it is slowly filling. It features big cats and the environment lacks of wood (an intact log is a king's treasure). Anyone recall the name? [inspired by this front page post] [more inside]

I don't think this is a job for a "handyman," but I don't know of another kind of person who would be the right person to call for this kind of thing. I have a TV, and I have a sound-bar-and-bass-thing, and I want them to go. I hooked them up with a digital audio cable and then rage-quit. Where can I get someone to do this one thing, in Chicago, without it costing me a lot of money? I searched TaskRabbit with some keywords, but nothing comes up. [more inside]

I want to make a site with the exact same functionality as this one: http://stealstrategies.net In other words, I want a Tumblr site with one lead image. Clicking it takes me to a random post and so on and so on. Is this custom code or is there a randomization/shuffle feature that I’m overlooking? Thanks so much.
We used to have a singing candle in our family that we'd light every birthday. It's shuffled off its lighted coil, and now I can't find a replacement. The closest I could find are these kind, which seem like one-use to me. Where can I buy one? Or how do I DIY one?

I have a somewhat unusual way of feeding myself. Each week, I pick a menu of two recipes that share ingredients, and cook in one afternoon 10 servings of each recipe. I love buying in bulk, and I hate measuring volumes. And I really, really hate the "US customary" volumes. Are there recipe sites that (1) publish recipes scaled for 10 servings, (2) suggest recipe pairings that share ingredients, and (3) specify ingredients by weight? [more inside]
I've been searching Google and Adobe forums and part of the problem is in explaining this: basically, black borders appear on the sides, and the edges of layers in the film show (at least I think that's what's happening). I will upload one version to Youtube if that helps explain it. It works better when I do it as an AVI but then the edges, which, since my video involves layers, makes it look like the edges of the layers are showing on one side. [more inside]
I was quite fascinated with the FPP on AWK, and the commentary that it's A: only good for a couple of things, but B: seems to be -really- good at them. What other languages are like this? Equally, the comment on Humdrum interested me enough that applications of that one-trick would also be very welcome.
My house from 1979 needs a new tub and toilet. Badly. Due to some water damage, it's going need to go down to the studs. I'm going to need to do a good chunk of work myself. Where do I start to get a handle on this? [more inside]
Most cultures love to tell stories: spoken or written accounts of specific individuals who go on a quest/endure a challenge over a linear time frame, culminating in a resolution. But what other kinds of story-like practices have been reported in human societies past and present? An example might be the lists in Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book. Other made up examples: stories about concepts not people, stories with no time axis, stories with no ending; stories made of material objects; stories in Q&A form; etc.
My almost four-year-old and I will be flying out to meet the rest of my family in a big Airbnb in Flagstaff. And I've got no idea what we're going to do once we get there. [more inside]

My wife and I are moving to Manhattan in the fall with our three-year-old. We're Canadians; she's been accepted to a 10-month master's program at Columbia, and as a not-allowed-to-work-dependent, I'm weighing doing stay-at-home-care with our little guy vs. putting him daycare. I feel like one year in New York offers opportunities for a fun, exciting year — but I have no idea where to start. What's the stay-at-home parent lifestyle like in Manhattan? [more inside]

Are there any vegan chocolate brands that attempt to taste like conventional American candy bars? I love all varieties of chocolate but mostly have fancier dark chocolate bars with figs, almonds and sea salt. Are there brands that offer reasonably good approximations of milk chocolate candy bars like Kit-Kats or Snickers? [more inside]
You know how after a camera flashes in your eyes, you see a sort of after-image of the flash for a while before it fades? I see something like that all the time, but my eye doctor doesn’t see anything and a brain MRI didn’t show anything. What gives? [more inside]
I have accepted that I am 47 years old and I will never be a vegetable fiend. I do not want to/can't make juices/smoothies/etc. Can I drink low-sodium V8 Juice and pretend I'm at least getting SOME veggies? How much of it do I need to chug to, say, get a full day's worth of veg per the USDA??

I have a First Alert SCO7 smoke/carbon monoxide detector, built in June 2011. It tests just fine. On the back, it says that it will give a specific warning beep when it reaches the end of its life, yet “replace unit after 60 months” is printed next to it. Aren’t these units supposed to last 7-10 years? Why would it say this?
I'm dead broke and yet still need to eat. I'm having trouble staying full on my budget and I worry my overall value health is suffering for it. I'm looking for suggestions for filling, high calorie food that can be purchased for next to nothing. [more inside]
A while back I asked how much fossil fuel it took to walk. I built a calculator. Can you look over the math and sources of information and tell me if there's something better/more accurate to use, and more generally if there are things that I'm overlooking that I could include (without getting too into the weeds). [more inside]
I'm looking for good books about the history of California (or the West coast more generally, or Los Angeles in particular). They don't need to be tours d'horizon. They can focus on a specific time/place/person/theme. To give a rough idea of other "local history" I've enjoyed, this question is inspired by Robert Caro's The Power Broker, but I also enjoyed Gotham and London: The Biography. I've read Kevin Starr's one-volume California, and would certainly be interested in thoughts on his other books.

A few local-music podcasts would like to use a cover song I posted on their podcasts. All their podcasts are distributed on Spotify and Apple Music. I’d like to get the rights for the song, but after reaching out to the publishing company that owns (?) the song, I think I may be in over my head. I’ve started looking for a lawyer to help me deal with the rights, but I have no idea what to look for. Has anyone gone through this? What should I look for in a copyright lawyer?
How can I perform well at work, to eventually get some benefits of being recognized as a strong performer, without making enemies from competition? How do I know what "my place" is? Can I "fight back" if someone makes me look bad or do I have to "pay my dues" by accepting this from a high status person? [more inside]
I have a touch panel from a 1991 AT&T home security system complete with wiring harness and supposedly in good working order. I'd like to somehow use common household batteries as a power source to illuminate the panel's lights. Is this possible?

After 10 years in our downtown offices, our administrative offices are moving to our clinic location and I do not want to go! How do computers "think" about irrational numbers? If I tell my computer: √2 ^ 2, does it first calculate the square root out to a certain decimal place, then square it, and round the answer up to 2? Or does it somehow understand the irrationality of √2 and not perform that part operation? I don't have a CS background, so this question might be pretty naive. Links to articles/ discussions are welcome, my googling didn't go so well.
Asking for a friend. 2 x 5lb prime ribs, already bagged for sous vide today. Something happened last night - either 2 quarts of hot stock or a cracked door - and the fridge warmed up, and the prime rib temped at 50 F at 9am today. She immediately put the prime ribs in the hot bath. Can They Eat It?

How can I build a life that allows for a reasonable degree of comfort and mobility by working from home? [more inside]

I'm back again and struggling with how to disconnect from my 72 year-old mentally ill alcoholic mother. I've come to the realization that my sense of "obligation" to my mother is what's preventing me from moving the hell on from her. But... I feel "obligated" to "take care of her" in some way or other, because *literally* no one else will. [more inside]
What kind of work and resources go into producing a long-form journalism piece like this one? [more inside]
I bought a new computer for a business I help run with my SO. Hes paying me slowly back overtime. I'm very much about keeping it like new and well managed for as long as possible. I don't like kids behind the desk and that goes for his child as well. I take the business very seriously so when I saw the child was on there, I said "oh, no kids on there." And he got very very annoyed and felt I was ordering him around. So he said I should just take the computer back. I said we need it for the business. I feel hes making my job harder than it needs to be. He feels I'm talking down to him. Was I wrong to say this?
I realize that sleepless nights are *great* practice for having a newborn, which I'll have in a few months, but I'm pregnant and need relief from the RLS I've developed. I tend to have shallow emotions. I don't think it's quite the same as depression, as I've been depressed and gotten better. Most times, I have a rather numb baseline feeling. This doesn't go away so easily. I'm pretty much unable to cry and worry I don't react strongly enough to deaths and sad events. Sometimes, I think I sort of fit the definition of alexithymia, although it's a difficulty in feeling and not just a difficulty in describing feelings. I'm uncomfortable in realizing that this quality seems to be something seen in pop culture sociopath characters. I can't help but shake the idea that this could be part of me, and I'm not sure how I'd be comfortable with that. [more inside]

I just looked at my iPad's photo roll and I see that there is a screenshot of the lock screen taken on 31 January, 4, 18, 19 and 23rd February, and 23rd March. At 12:03am four times, once at 12:02am, and once at 12:09am. There are none prior to January 31. The timing makes me think it must be automatic rather than e.g. me pressing the wrong button trying to log in and accidentally screen shotting. Does anyone know what would be causing this? (I don't think the iPad does automatic updates that often, so I don't think it's that.)

Inspired by this question, I'd like recommendations for a replacement for my Jawbone UP wristband. What are my options?
So for $Reasons we have a rotation of large clay ice packs for various pains that crop up ... foot on one person, sciatic nerve on the other, occasional sports strains ... but our ice packs seem to be less cohesive than they used to be. I have an Acer Chromebook laptop. It's a few years old. Last year even when plugged in the battery wouldn't take a charge. Given my pathetic income, my next step was to use it when it was plugged in and ignore the battery issue. This worked for awhile until it would intermittently shut off even when plugged in. My next step was to bend, twist and hold the pin into the port with tape just so I had use of the computer. Welp, that's rarely working now. [more inside]

At last, only six years into my membership, I must engage in a MeFi rite of passage. Can I safely drink Bailey's Irish Cream, purchased probably March 2017, that expired in September 2017? For how much longer? If I do, will it be gross? It is opened, and was not refrigerated but was stored in a cabinet with no exposure to sunlight. Yes, I know that Bailey's would tell me the answer is no.

I've been reading about the sense of smell. In particular there is the idea that the olfactory system goes directly to the limbic system. They say that the very first time you smell something, your emotional reaction whether positive or negative becomes permanently imprinted. You will have that same reaction to the smell for the rest of your life. So what's the truth? What's the scientific consensus on this?
A friend trying to work his way out of poverty has asked me to help him buy a car. I'm concerned that the amount he wants to spend is going to get him deeper into debt because of excessive maintenance costs involved with the car. How much do you have to spend on a used vehicle to minimize the chances of getting a lemon. (If it makes a difference, he's in Jacksonville, NC.) There's a similar Ask from 2007 that puts the figure at around $2,000, but 2007 is a long time ago. [more inside]
Bullying has really ramped up with my second and third graders and I am struggling to know the appropriate action to take. I want the kids in my class to know that bullying is something I will not stand for, but there is obviously so much going on when I am not there. How should a primary school teacher respond to bullying? My classes are small so it is hard for the children not to interact with each other and to avoid his/her bully (which isn't the ideal soluation anyway). [more inside]

For several years, we’ve hired a company for weekly housecleaning. For a long time, the company has sent the same person most weeks: Someone we like, who does a great job. We were contractually forbidden from hiring her independently of the company. But now the company is closing, and that restriction is gone. The housecleaner would like to work with us (and other clients) directly. That sounds good to us. I’m looking for advice on how we can best make this work for all concerned. We are in Canada (Toronto) if that affects any legal concerns, etc. [more inside]
For something I'm writing, I'm looking for examples of the complexity (and expense, if you have any details to share) of the type of lab equipment used to research and develop complicated new technology that addresses major world challenges. The tech might be radically more efficient solar cells, a new treatment for Alzheimers or cancer, nuclear fusion, the hyperloop, etc.—anything with lofty aims. Can you share an example of what's needed to develop a particular technology? I want to contrast developing this type of technology and developing something like an app that requires very little equipment at all.

Should I mow it now, spread anything, leave it alone until...? [more inside]
Hello! I think it's a fun idea to have a bit of a sled to get through my crawlspace instead of literally having to crawl. I have felt the need to switch to another platform for: keeping up with others socially (events, birthdays, general status updates), posting pictures & interests, writing / journaling. Outside of the news of late, I felt a sense that Facebook was just becoming not only a suction of time and maintenance, but now even worse some shady bias practices. I made a statement in a post as such, and many friends said they'd be willing to follow to another platform if I found such. Does anyone have any recommendations (I'm thinking like old-school LiveJournal, or Tumblr, or something of the likes) that can be a safe, enjoyable, social space either for a small group of people or potentially a wider audience? I've been contemplating guided-tour biking vacations, but I'm also cheap, and I happen to live about 100 yards from the East Coast Greenway. I coordinate projects for an unusual recycling industry that is trying to expand. Random people contact me when they have suitable material available, and I'd love to have a streamlined way to share this with lots of industry members who may be interested. In the past, I've shared these alerts to an email list, but then I never know if anyone followed up, whether materials were ever recycled, or if it all got lost in the void. I keep wondering if there's any team communications app that I could use to post new listings, see who saw the post, and allow people to "claim" items on a first-come, first-served basis. Bonus difficulty: people in my work world aren't generally tech-savvy, so it would need to be really straightforward and simple. While I think a Slack discussion etc. could theoretically work, I'm looking for something with a ridiculously easy interface: see post, click yes or no. Does something like this exist?

Based on my own research and discussions with family/friends, I am convinced that I fall somewhere along the spectrum of ADHD inattentive. I brought this up with my PCP, who has suggested that I go through the process of formal ADHD screening with a psychiatrist. She won't diagnose me herself, since it is easily misdiagnosed. However, all of the psychiatrists I've looked into offer out-of-network services only. Most tell me that the cost of screening will run me at least $900-$1200, and it likely will be much more in the event I need medication management follow-up appointments. I've made it to my 30s without pursuing a diagnosis or medication, relying on my quick wits, hyperfocus, and procrastination-induced panic-urgency to get things done. But, I've reached a point where I think this may be preventing me from living my life in the way I'd like, because I can't sustain interest in anything, including lifelong, beloved hobbies and a decade-long intellectual pursuit. This is causing me a lot of distress. It will take me months to save up for this process, not to mention how much mental energy it will take me to follow through with appointments. Have you been here? Was it worth it to you?

So the women at my work are in a bit of a bind. We're experiencing what we believe is sexual discrimination, but the only reason we can say that is because the women are treated differently from the men, and tasks are prioritized differently. That's one problem - it's not blatant, just a pattern - which is obvious to anyone who knows about sexual discrimination, but harder to understand for people who don't take it as seriously as they should. The second problem is that it's technically a "subordinate" - although we are not their supervisor, they are supposed to be taking requests from us. And most sexual discrimination laws seems to be discrimination from "employer/potential employer". The person has been reported to their supervisor (which is our supervisor), with no results. That is potentially the only avenue that I can think of to take it to HR - that the supervisor has been informed of sexual discrimination/bias and has refused to take action. Thoughts? Advice? I have begun requesting documentation from the supervisor as to what they've done - actual specific steps and it's all very vague. [more inside]

I have written innumerable papers and essays throughout my academic career, but upon entering grad school writing a papers have just felt like a struggle. How can I stop worrying about the structure and just get on with writing my papers? [more inside]
Suppose you were exploring the boundaries of the Second Amendment’s grant of the right to bear arms, and wanted to pose a continuum of weaponry from muzzle loaders to nuclear warheads and biological weapons, to see where someone might finally say no, that shouldn’t be in the hands of civilians. What types of “arms” would you place on this continuum? Let’s limit it to ten.
My friend- a lawyer from DC- is coming into SF for a work trip and we're trying to get together for dinner and a drink at around 8 on Monday evening. I'd like to take her somewhere special that shows off SF dining a bit but that is not too pricey, and after a long day she wants it to be walking distance from her hotel in Union Square. Many of the restaurants recommended in previous Asks are really expensive (Fleur De Lys, Masa's) or closed (Ponzu, Lulu). Any local favorites that you would recommend? Thank you!

We moved near NYC on the Jersey side 3 years ago when our daughter was born. Since then it's been juggling responsibilities and life. We currently find ourselves looking for a richer social life but aren't sure how to find good new friends anymore. How do we find groups that we can have regular activities with? How do we build actual close friendships when we have comparatively less time? What has been your experience? What worked and what hasn't?
I've been curious about a sensory deprivation float experience for awhile, but mild claustrophobia has kept me from it. When the populations of China and/or India are referred to, it's always "over a billion people." Is there common agreement about whether that is a thousand millions or a million millions? All I find is references to America and Great Britain. What about the French? Or the Chinese, for that matter? This is a number, even if an approximate number. Surely it doesn't change depending on my geographical location.

I read a sci-fi story that probably came out within the last 10 years about the challenges of effective immortality and divergent evolution on a generation ship, with some people preferring to die rather than use the new tech to become immortal. The ship eventually meets other humans, only to discover that they are now incredibly advanced to the point of being barely human, and now the immortal-gen-ship generation is faced with the same quandary as the generation who chose to die off at the start of the story. What is the name of this story?

When I Google replacing aglets on shoelaces, the results are all kludges involving glue, tape, or heat shrink. Is there not a way to professionally replace an aglet (specifically the clear plastic variety) on a shoelace? I've been using the word "bemused" wrong my whole life. I always figured it referred to affable, amused thoughtfulness. I'd imagine someone grinning a sardonic grin, comfortably seated in an easy chair, drawing on a pipe. Lost in thought, a bit detached and aloof, but grinning in self-amusement. Sort of a combination of "beguiled" and "amused". But no. Bemused, it turns out, is more of an expression of defeat. You don't know the answer, and you're probably not going ever know, and that's that. So what is the word I'm looking for?
Angel on one shoulder, devil on the other? I think I have Fred Rogers on one shoulder and General Zod on the other. I swing back and forth more than I would like between my kinder/agreeable/respectful side and my contemptuous "This planet must be cleansed with fire" side. I'd like to find a way to practice mindfulness/meditation (not sure I am using those terms right) to tilt my temperament more towards ol' Fred, but I'm wary getting started because I'm resolutely non-religious/non-spiritual and I don't want to sift through a bunch of woo or corny self-help schlock. Still there must be some way for me to find inner calm. Anything you would recommend? Books, CDs, whatever.

I'm looking for a book I read around 1981. It was a children's history book told through stories of a fictionalised English family - the same family over several hundred years. One chapter described children being allowed to wear more comfortable clothes as a result of changes in fashion following the French Revolution. There was a fold-out family tree at the end of the book. My copy was a fairly thin hardback without a dustjacket, and I'm sure it was a British publisher. It was more of a fictionalised textbook than a children's novel.
Howdy. I will make this as succinct as I can: If I have an array in PHP, like $filenames = ['filename1','filename2','filename3',...] and another array, $indices = [0, 2, 6, 9, ...], is there a way, other than using a loop over the indices array, to create an array containing elements from filenames at the indices in $indices? You know, something like this: $result = [$filenames[$indices], $filenames[$indices], ...]. I'm prepared to use a for loop, but I thought that there must be a more elegant way. Thanks!

In NYC, the Natural History Museum would be perfect, but I am in the Maryland/DC area. I know about the Smithsonian Natural History museum. Where else should I go?

I recently purchased a 10" Windows 10 tablet. It works well for most things but for whatever reason many websites I visit in Chrome or Edge or Firefox have a scroll bar at the bottom and require me to scroll left and right to see the entire page. Some sites work fine, like Metafilter's front page (it renders nicely without a horizontal scrollbar but this question submission page isn't fitting properly either) but Google requires scrolling back and forth just to see the full search bar. What the? [more inside]
I just found out that the six-hour work road trip I'll be taking tomorrow will be in an older car that doesn't have bluetooth, and I'm not sure it will have an AUX port. Wondering what HR people prefer: I'm helping someone fill out a job application. We need to summarize the primary duties from previous jobs. Back in the mid-90s I recorded (via VHS) a fragment of a music video from the LA TV show Are-Oh-Vee. I've been haunted by the song ever since, I get it stuck in my head about once a week, but all I have is that one fragment and I missed the name of the band and the song. [more inside]

Given my recent interest in Cold War-era technothrillers, I'm also interested in games that depict conflicts in the period. One is Northern Fleet, a simulation of a hypothetical war in 1996. The catch is that this map is required for play, and not available in a screen-reader accessible format. It seems to have a bunch of grid squares, but they're apparently laid out in a somewhat unconventional way. How can I get the information I need from this in order to plan effective strategies? One of my few bits of brand loyalty I've retained from my childhood is to Pride of Szeged paprika in the red rectangular tin. In the Midwest in the 90s it was — so my parents claimed — the only kind worth cooking with, and I've kept that prejudice. But American grocery store spices are a lot better in general than I grew up with, at least in diverse coastal cities like the one where I now live. Is Pride of Szeged still the best you can get without going to a specialty retailer, or has the other stuff on the grocery store shelf gotten just as good and I'm making a stink over nothing?

I just want a bit of color, without shimmer. I've been duped before - sample swatches and packaging that looks like it shouldn't be shimmery, but as soon as I open the package the actual lip balm is. Do you have recommendations? I'm looking for drugstore brands, but if you have a favorite from a fancier brand, I'll take a look at it too. Oh, also, I don't want lip balm you have to touch with your fingers to use.
We have kitchen shelving with these lamps built into the underside of them. They take halogen bulbs with two little pins. Is there any fix for this, short of replacing the lamps? [more inside]

I'm looking for a book I had as a child (1970/80s). It was a color illustrated children's book that showed the history of an English town from prehistoric to "modern" (1970s?) time. Each page had a scene showing the state of the town from prehistoric settlement to Roman town to medieval city, etc through to modern city. I have vague memories of the title being "Story of a town" or "Life of a town" but my Google-fo has failed me.
Often, I delay going out to run errands till after lunch because I don't want to have to grab a lunch from a fast food joint. This is terribly inconvenient. The fix would be to pack a lunch and eat in the car or perhaps eat two small meals before and after the errand run. A packed lunch isn't very appealing and two small meals isn't as appetizing as a substantial meal. Do you have some work around that I'm missing?

The only time my acne has come back was during my pregnancy when it looked pretty bad. In the North Carolina mountains, we put a bean in a jar for every August fog and use the bean count to forecast the next winter's snows. We also race hundreds of fuzzy caterpillars at the Woolly Worm festival each year and forecast the coming winter's severity based on the fuzziness and blackness of the fastest caterpillar. I'm not sure if we are unusually silly around here or if there are gleefully non-scientific forecasting methods everywhere. Is there a local folk weather forecasting tradition where you live?

Cleaning out my closet after many years of thrifting, I discovered a handsome pair of 1920s-era knee-high leather boots--but unfortunately without laces. I am a short lady, so "knee height" is 14" from the sole to top of the boot. The boots have 4 eyelets and 13 hooks, so 17 holes total. What is the proper length of a boot lace to tie these boots, and where can I purchase a pair, ideally in black leather to match the boots? I searched the interwebs, but all the charts I found stopped a few holes shy of 17.

OK, I lead a very small group in a very big company. I was told last week that most of my group will be laid off (not me.) We are tight - we've worked together in a very different way than the rest of the company, and it is going to be brutal. I honestly believe the layoffs are unfair, but they are what they are. Moreover, the HR person won't let me inform people (either individually or as a group) in any way but the most legalese, robotic form. I'm not even allowed to answer questions, I have to defer them to the HR person. I guess I understand that, but it isn't my style. I could do it, of course, but.. I've been given the choice. Either I can do the layoffs myself with the HR person present, sticking to the script - or I can have my boss, who decided on the layoffs, do it. [more inside]

So, someone is living on a deserted island, far in the jundgle, manned with everything they need to set up a small clinic - from microscope to morphine. They would like books and resources on how to diagnose and perform simple procedures that require one set of steady hands, how to do microscopic analysis and much more. Think Albert Schweitzer but with 2018 technology. Please post the definitive books and resources on the subject. TIA
I've been friends with a couple for about 4 months and I thought we were just friends, but I received a text from them today saying that they would like to discuss relationships when we see each other next. I'm not sure how to feel about this. [more inside]

I'm an American who lives in Seattle and I have a trip to England coming up. Two audiobooks I have enjoyed include You and Tampa. Each of these books is narrated by a single narrator. In each case the narrator is a terrible human being who is intelligent, has some wry observations about modern culture, and plots and executes one or more evil deeds. What are some other well-written audiobooks that are like this?
I have a friend who's interested in playing some games on Linux, for accessibility reasons, the Windows versions aren't super friendly as a blind user. I want to perhaps set up a server for her so she doesn't have to learn an entire new operating system just to play a game. I'd appreciate some guidance. [more inside]

My photography habit has me filling up hard drive space faster than anything I've done before. I need some way of expanding storage and backing things up that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. My husband and our 2 year old daughter would like to spend 3-4 weeks this summer living in a Spanish speaking country. We would like it to be relatively cheap, safe, and ideally have some cool archeological stuff semi-nearby. We've thought about Mexico, PR, and Costa Rica, but we'd love to get some specific suggestions from people who have done something similar. Spain isn't out of the question but we are coming from the U.S. so shorter flights are better. Thank you!

I want online instructions but not printable (pinnable) patterns for garments I can make (for) myself. Where are they? Every google search takes me to pinterest! DESPERATELY seeking recommendations. I promised a visiting uncle and aunt that I would make reservations for dinner somewhere good, near where they're staying on 421 W. 7th Street, for March 28. Can I move these 2 drives into an external enclosure of any sort & have it recognize the RAID configuration? Or is the only device that will recognize an Apple software RAID the Mac that it’s built on? [more inside]
I really like the bright colors and wild patterns on a dashiki, and the general fit, and I LOVE the front pockets. But I'm a white woman and wearing one seems racially insensitive at best. Is there a line of shirts out there that is loose-fitting, light, 100% cotton, colorful/interesting patterns (without being just pop-culture T-shirts), and has large front pockets down low (NOT up on the boobs)? Pockets could be one-big-one or two-separate. Thanks!

I'm running a brief table roleplaying game set in the late 1970s in the Midwest US. One of the players was alive and conscious that decade. I'd love to include a few specific, fun details about the time that would make a survivor of the era smile in recognition. These could be food items, ubiquitous music, a kind of car, a "that guy" that was common. I'm especially interested in details that would reveal a character to be kind of a dirtbag.
I am a new mom, who at 35 has only ever dabbled in make up and certainly was never taught to apply it. I have been feeling glum about my appearance and thought I might give make up a go. I live in an old apt which I love, but in summer it's a pain to sleep in my bedroom, and the obvious solution is to not sleep in my bedroom in summer. I'd like to expand my repertoire of desserts to include fruit pies, which are both my favorite dessert and s/th I have no experience making despite being an otherwise quite capable cook. At first glance, it seems some pies would be inherently more difficult than others to make from scratch. Lemon meringue, for example, includes the not-always-easy-to-stiffen-and-peak meringue, as well as getting the filling to gel just right. Pie made with whole fruit--apples, for example, would seem easier. What do people think? Are there better starter/first pies than others? Thanks, and happy eating!

Have any teachers done this before? What is the easiest way to manage stock market simulations? Do you have web sites that make it easier? Thank you for your time!

Selling a condo in Orange County, California. Section 7.C.2 of the contract references "owners title insurance", which our agent says will cost around $1,400. Europe preferred (as that's where I will be based) but open to US/Australia/Canada as well. In fact, any background info about where to start looking or personal experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I rent a car parking space in the basement of an apartment building near my office, and the concierge used to keep a big bowl of these amazing tiny, individually wrapped candies on his desk. I just finished Beloved by Toni Morrison and it was astonishing. It gave me, upon almost every page, the sort of palpable literary rush I received when reading Wolf Hall for the first time or Gilead or The Hare with Amber Eyes. I am unclear why I neglected Morrison for so long but I am hungry to rectify this immediately. So: where next? Continue with the loose Beloved trilogy (Jazz and Paradise), start at the beginning with The Bluest Eye, jump into the middle with better known books like Song of Solomon, go for some essays...?
My birthday is approaching, and I would like to take an overnight camping/backpacking trip to celebrate. I want relative seclusion, not-too-freezing weather, no super strenuous hikes. For the last 4-5 years I have co-published a certain puzzle game that has gone viral many times over, so much so that it's become a full-time occupation for some in our company. For the last year we have been desperately been trying to move our production away from China and lift the quality of our upcoming releases, but having a real hell of a time finding a new factory. I know this is a bit of a longshot on the green, but can anyone recommend one at all? [more inside]
I'm about to move into a new 10ft x 10ft office with a roomie (I'm his manager.) We share a slightly larger office now. I get to buy some new furniture and set it up. I'm always on the phone, my roomie is sometimes. I'm thinking of Jarvis sit/stand desks, a couple decent Ikea office chairs, and perhaps a room divider thingy, and putting our desks so we'd be facing each other (that way we each get some window to our left-hand-side). And maybe a white noise maker? Any tips or tricks or recommendations for making a small office work for two people? Thanks!

Where are the reasonably priced women's 100% cotton jeans? The last pair I had came from Madewell but the only all-cotton jeans they have now cost $495. Is there some kind of denim aggregator out there that will let me sort by fiber content? If it matters, I think I am looking for straight or "boyfriend" jeans without any shredding and whatnot. Ideally under $150. Just, you know, jeans. Like from my youth in the 1980s.
I've been going through a small Tom Clancy re-read, and realizing that while I enjoy his plots, even some of the improbable ones, the conservative politics rubs me a bit the wrong way. Is there anything which might scratch a similar itch, light-ish military thrillers with clear good vs. evil, but not as much political soapboxing? I like the older Cold War and early 2000s-era Clancy, but haven't been able to get into the post 9-11 stuff, let alone any of his collaborations. Bonus points for a few personal thoughts on why I might like a particular author/series.
I really like Amaro Averna and would like to try some others that are a little more off-the-beaten-path. I've tried all the big names (which for me is Fernet Branca, Cynar, Campari, Aperol) and Averna is far and away my favorite. Luckily for me, there's a bar and a few liquor stores near me that have many rare and unusual amaro options. If I enjoy the chocolate and coffee notes of Averna, and its slightly sweeter flavor, what might I be a fan of that I haven't heard of before?
I have a concussion, so pretty much all I can do is read -- tv/computer screens make it worse -- and I can't focus on anything even slightly complicated. I'm looking for engrossing books with one main plotline and one narrator and not more than two timelines. Some domestic thrillers fit, cozy mysteries, maybe YA romance? I'd like to stay away from anything with significant worldbuilding, so no SFF please.

I have perfectionistic/grandiose traits that can keep me from doing simple tasks ("I'll probably burn the omelette, maybe I'll just have toast") as well as complex ones ("this idea for a blog post is cool! But you know what would be cooler, if I could get a PhD in it and then hire someone to create an app! No, wait, I can never do that, I guess I'll forget about it.") Are there workbooks or courses that might help me work through these traits? Did you do something for this that you found helpful? [more inside]
My husband and I have recently moved to Toronto from Sydney with zero furniture. We have an Airbnb rental and are currently looking for a long term lease. We've found somewhere that looks promising - yay! - but this also means finding furniture. I'd really like to avoid furnishing the entire place with Ikea if possible. [more inside]

I went to the SPCA this weekend planning to adopt a relatively sedate, middle-aged cat. Instead, I came home with a petite young loudmouth. They estimate she is about a year old and that she may not get much bigger than her current size, which is just under 6.5 pounds. She shows a lot of confidence and is very chatty. The shelter named her Black Panther which I think is not a good fit at all. The names that come to my mind are Cassie and Delphine. What might this kitty's name be?

The offending site is a popular (though not usually malicious) click-baity site that I tend to avoid, and unfortunately, despite clearing "cookies and data" a million times, the offending site still pops up after typing a certain word in my Safari search bar. Yes, I know I can just turn off Siri suggested websites, but how did the offending website (which I won't call out by name unless I really have to) weasel its way into Siri's suggestions, despite the fact I never actually navigated to it? Why doesn't deleting history, cookies, and data do anything about it?

I just want one that doesn't waste a ton of water.
My wife is doing some volunteer work, and she would like to be able to make calls on her personal cell phone so that her ID shows her from the organization she is working with. If you have been a recipient like myself, what did you conclude was the likely reason for being given free stuff? [more inside]
I am a queer woman of color in my early 30s. I, erm, have recently realized how much I LONG for a role model. But I don't want to just pigeon hole anyone who checks off those same identity category boxes; I know how annoying that can be. Is there some sort of a mentoring program like that? Online or IRL? This poster was acquired in a random pile of things I salvaged from an artistic horder friend. I took it for its aesthetic value. It would appear to have something to do with the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. Beyond that, I know nothing about it. I do not know what politics it reflects, nor the meaning of the phrase on it. Any insight is appreciated!
As part of a journey to the final frontier of frugality, I have some white pumpkins to eat. Regular American pumpkins, not Indian white pumpkin. Are they the same as orange? Can I make a squash soup with them? Or do you have some other ideas? Thanks!
2 nights ago, when I got home from training I noticed pain in my right leg, outside of the shin, a few inches up from the ankle. It was sore and a little throbbing at rest, mild discomfort on plantarflexion and dorsiflexion, quite sore on eversion and a sharp pain on inversion - about a 7. I iced it straight away but the pain got worse. There is a tear drop shaped tender spot that feels very bruised but there is no bruising or redness. Pictured [more inside]

I'm headed south to warm waters with pretty fish at the end of the month and am considering purchasing a full-face snorkeling mask and waterproof camera bags. I'll use them at least 4 times on this trip and probably once or twice a year after. Do you have any recommendations or cautionary tales? I've been reading Amazon reviews and am on the fence. I'm in Canada so our Amazon options are slightly different than the US ones but any input welcome. [more inside]

A friend's drag/burlesque troupe once teamed up with a taste test organisation to run some meat-testing sessions in return for funding from that org. It was the first time many of us had heard of this option and we found it pretty novel and creative. What it says. I'm considering uterine artery embolization to treat fibroids, and there are some complications re: size and location. In addition to (of course) wanting a skillful practitioner and one who would treat the resulting pain appropriately, I'd like to be able to get the best, most up-to-date advice as to whether it's even feasible for me. My GYN is clearly leaning a bit towards surgery (pending MRI results), but that's, after all, his practice, not IR, and so his idea (and his intuitive preference) of what would contraindicate UAE may not be state-of-the-art. Any tales of personal experience would also be welcomed.

During my first trip to Ireland last year I fell in love with the brown bread. Unlike the Irish brown bread I've had in the US, it was not dry and sandy and crumbly. Instead, it was moist, nutty, and hearty and amazing with butter and marmalade. I've looked at lots of online recipes, but rather than try 50 different ones in search of a great one, I thought I'd ask if anyone has a great standby formula they can personally share. Thanks!

I'm looking for recommendations for either online resources to have a good life nevertheless, representations of permanently single men and women in fiction or on film whether uplifting or downbeat, or good how-to guides on living alone. I am an independent voter in Illinois, and have strong opinions on which Democrat I'd prefer on the ballot in November and which Republican I'd (really, really not) prefer. Illinois is an "open primary" state, so I can choose either party's ballot to vote on. But I can't take both. That means practically speaking that I can only vote halfway in the primary. In a two-party system where the Democrat or Republican will win a national race 99.999% of the time, the ability to only vote for primary candidates from one party feels disenfranchising. Through a random event I googled my cell phone number. Wow. It showed my name and variations of my name. It also showed some backgrounds on these people. Some had lawsuits. Some had several wives. Some had prison records. And none of this is true for me. [more inside]

I'm a young smallish woman that takes the subway every day. I've encountered my fair share of manspreaders, who really make me uncomfortable. I understand that personal space is at a minimum on the train, but I don't like when guys take up my space with their legs splayed out. What should I do to confront these guys? I don't want to spread my legs out because it bothers me so much for some guy's leg to be touching mine. It feels very sexual-harrass-y. [more inside]

I've just replaced the battery on my iPod classic, but because it was a pain to open and I had to pry the thing apart, there is now a gap at the sides between the front plate and the case (here's a pic) I can live with how it looks as I'm going to put a silicone case on it, but I'm concerned that it might leave it vulnerable to damage. What can I put on there to 'seal' the sides? [more inside]

So I am oddly googlefu-less in trying to find a Mad Magazine gag from my youth which comprised four anticlimactic stories, loaded guns which might save the hero or heroine if they went off, but they didn't. The one I particularly remember is the naive young couple honeymooning in Vegas. They're about to take in a show, and the bride sends the groom downstairs while she gets dolled up. He loses their entire dowry while she gets ready, and he's in utter despair. As he heads back to the room to confess, he sticks his hand in his pocket and finds a last silver dollar, just as he passes a slot machine the jackpot of which is almost as much as he just lost. He says a little prayer: if he could only get it back, get most of it back, he will never do anything so stupid again -- he and she will live responsibly and reasonably and lovingly and happily. He puts the silver dollar in the machine, pulls the lever, and... three lemons. THE END

The title says it all- I've encountered THIS type of multi-pin connector a few times and don't know the proper name for it. (i.e. "Molex" "DB-9" )
I have ADHD and I struggle with managing the projects on my plate. I understand the "micro" stuff for staying on task in the moment (Pomodoro technique, playing fun music, etc.). The "macro" stuff is still a huge challenge to me, though: project planning and time management over weeks and months, keeping track of what projects are actually on your plate, and so on. What help is out there for people with ADHD trying to manage the big picture, not just the minute-by-minute focusing? All tips, resources, books, websites, personal anecdotes welcome!
I am looking for feedback on the plan I have in mind, and hoping that others can offer fresh perspectives which may help me improve this plan, or perhaps alter it completely. I am in the UK. [more inside]

I have Netflix and mostly use the DVD queue. I get that if the top thing on your queue is listed with a "wait", Netflix will skip to the next film and send you that. But...what happens to the "waitlisted" film when that happens? [more inside]
I'd like to improve my ability to connect and work with kids. Something I see teachers and some parents have down pat. Is there actual training that can help? Or is this just something that I'll just have to get experience? I'm looking for actual training rather than tips and anecdotes. I'm in NYC if that helps. [more inside]

Recently, I have somewhat randomly discovered two food items that I didn't know existed: coconut aminos and chickpea pasta. I have been amazed at how well they sub in for their "unhealthier" counterparts and have been on a search for more food items like this that make me feel like I get to have my cake and eat it too. So if you know of any, please throw them my way!
I was reading the news and saw this snarky headline: "The White House chief calligrapher has a higher clearance than Jared Kushner," I thought "there's a White House chief calligrapher?*" and Google led me to the White House Graphics and Calligraphy Office. Which leads me to my question: How many other government calligraphers are there? Do the Senate and House have some, state and local offices, Governors? How can I find out? *The White House chief calligrapher is the award winning Pat Blair.
I stopped therapy due to coverage reasons a few months ago, and realize that I am so much happier and balanced and far less ruminative without therapy than I was while I was in therapy (on/off for the past several years). Now I have coverage again... but do I restart therapy? [more inside]

I've got a 2017 Honda Rebel 500 and I need to use these straps to secure this bag to the (stock) cargo rack and/or frame. They're all made to be used with each other, I'm just having some real spatial challenges figuring out how to do this, and the manufacturer provides no help. [more inside]

Librarians of metafilter, how do I find more than a brief biography of this psychologist? I collect notable Margarets, and came across her in a textbook and while I've found a scan of her own short autobiography, what I really want is a thoughtful biography, preferably scholarly. I can't find anything in print, but surely as the first female psychologist with a PhD, someone wrote a thesis about her that's sitting on a shelf somewhere?
A relative's adult son injured his foot badly and lived wth her and her husband for seven weeks. Husband blew up and said she had to choose between him or her son. She refused to kick her son out, so husband filed for divorce last month, but wants her to continue living with him and take care of the house, cook meals, etc.—all the "wifely duties." Needless to say, she's having none of that. Any recommendations for a divorce lawyer and resources for emotional and financial support in the Cleveland/Strongsville, Ohio area?
The strangest thing just happened to my wife and I. We hired a company to provide us with postpartum doulas. We’ve had two ladies come for the past month or so, dividing up the week. Due to staffing issues we’ve had someone new for the past week. We received an email today from the company immediately terminating our relationship due to “words and actions they consider harassment.” [more inside]
I need a rug for my kitchen, to cover up some problematic flooring that I can't fix until later. My first attempt -- using an area rug I had on hand -- failed because I quickly realized the rug was a real bear to wash, and that any rug in my kitchen is going to get dirty because of cooking messes, spills, etc. Which rug can help me? I will be in downtown Austin March 17th and 18th with the late afternoons and evenings free. It won't be worth buying a SXSW pass for that limited amount of time but I know there's usually other events that run concurrently (as well as St. Patrick's Day). Any recommendations on things to do and things to avoid? [more inside]

I'm lazy vegetarian. (I eat dairy and, rarely, eggs. I'm also OK with animal rennet cheeses.) I work from home and am alone a few afternoons a week. Since I don't feel like expending a ton of effort on myself, I could really use some suggestions for low-key vegetarian lunches that I can make in small batches.
I'd like to purchase a Raspberry Pi kit for two kids (ages 10 & 12), but I have no idea how to begin or what other accessories they may enjoy. All I have so far is a very nice monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Assume my budget is $100-$200. Any other Raspberry Pi related links, videos, etc. that may help first time builders would be great. Suggestions to other related questions I should be asking would also be great! Thanks!

I've decided now's the time to buy a house. But I was way behind on filing and (sort of) paying taxes. If I am paid up and in good standing with the IRS when transcripts are pulled, will that red flag me for getting a mortgage? More (U.S.-based) details inside. [more inside]

Asking for story research, not a nefarious plan. UK-filter please. If you live in a mortgaged house, and you disappear without a trace, what will happen? Presumably the mortgage provider forecloses and auctions the house, but how long would that normally take? Would you need to be declared dead?
I found a tiny little bird lying in the snow beside my back door yesterday. He probably flew into the glass door. I thought he was dead but when I picked him up I saw he was breathing but was too weak to lift his head. After a bit of googling on how to care for an injured bird I put him on a towel in a basket and covered the basket. After some more googling I'm pretty sure he's a goldcrest, apparently they're one of the smallest birds in Europe. [more inside]
