We have a case of bananas. What can we make with them that is shelf stable? We have a big food dehydrator and a well-stocked kitchen, but no freezer or fridge space to spare. (Also, vegetarian.) [more inside]
I earned my BS in Mathematics-- I especially love abstract math. Apply it to nothing, it is beautiful because it is. Then I earned my MA in in Library Science because I didn't know what else to do. I've been working as a Librarian I (i.e. Untrained social worker) for the past 14 years at a public library and I hate my job! I've been looking for research jobs, but where? I'm not interested in moving. My skills are ones of logic. What have I not considered?
I'm seeking suggestions for thoughtful additions to care packages for the homeless. What note could I include that would be of most value to them? [more inside]
We have worms trying to break in through our bathroom window - wtf? [more inside]
I want to take my sick mom on an awesome Sat drive tomorrow. [more inside]
I have sensory processing issues and am kept awake by even quiet snoring. Most snoring solutions seem to be designed to muffle loud snoring. I've tried a lot of solutions but nothing seems to work. My partner's snoring has been keeping me awake for years, and now that we're going to be in a new living in life situation I'm extra concerned. [more inside]
My car was repossessed right before I started a new job. I'm broke. What can I do? Is there any chance of getting my car back before Monday (discovering this on a Friday)?
We have been part of a very close knit group of families that all met through our kids' school. We are mostly in our 40's (some 30s and 50s). We have all been friends for years. I have been very active in keeping the families together and socializing now that our kids have scattered to different places. One family (The Family) has a second waterfront property and we used to be invited a 4 or 5 times a year to go stay with them and were always included when they would invite a group of the families out to camp on their property. [more inside]
Specifically wondering about self-guided ports of call exploration versus signing up for excursions; also wondering about dry suit snorkeling and zip lines in particular, or recommendations for HAL excursions in general. [more inside]
We're considering installing solar panels on our house. I'd like to learn about the pros and cons of different equipment types, financing, and installers. [more inside]
I'm a single black woman, 34 years old with natural black hair. I'm going on a trip soon and wanted to get a style that would be easy to maintain during the week. The stylist suggested cutting it along the sides and leaving the top part longer, in a tapered look. He showed me pictures from Google and I liked what I saw. I didn't have much of a shape to my hair before, so I was excited to give it a try. [more inside]
I share my WiFi with my neighbor, and with my wife of course. Will my neighbor's browsing habits be conflated with mine if my ISP tracks and sells our browsing info? How about my wife's? If so, is that a problem? We can separate the WiFi if necessary.

Brief summary: do you have any anecdata (or actual data!) on whether a person can move from seeking validation from external sources (e.g. romantic partners) to seeking validation from internal sources (e.g. developing a solid, positive self-image, achieving personal goals), and HOW this is best achieved? More inside... [more inside]
I am looking for scholarly commentaries on Bible stories, particularly the Old Testament. These can be Christian, Jewish, or Muslim (since there's a lot of overlap between the Bible and the Koran). [more inside]
I like guys who don't check out women in public or when watching media. I also like guys who don't watch porn. Where do I find them? [more inside]
I'm in Albuquerque next week for training M-T during the day, and have the evenings available. I'd love to do some Breaking Bad-related wanderings/touring/etc, but formal tours seem to be during the day, and I'm OK with doing things by myself. [more inside]
In terms of impact, is it better to have a lot of smaller marches attended by some number of people, or is it better to concentrate the people into fewer but larger marches? [more inside]
Are there any creative opportunities for convincing my strata and their plumbers that a shower could be added to a washroom? [more inside]
I have an older Android phone that I want to replace with something newer (or perhaps another type of smartphone) on my current phone plan. I want to keep my existing plan with this provider. Can I buy a phone from someone else and get it linked to my existing Verizon account? Where should I look for a good phone without spending a lot of money? What are some smartphones I should be looking at for comparison? Thank you!
Leaving tomorrow night for a week in Brussels. It kind of snuck up on me and I have questions! Please assume I know nothing about Europe, because I don't. I do travel to Asia a good bit, for what it's worth. [more inside]

My wife and I own a property in California, but live elsewhere. Long story cut short, we got into a financial pickle, and the house was foreclosed and sold at auction. What happens next? Specifically, I believe that the house sold for more than the amount of the outstanding loan, so I would like to see if we can get hold of the surplus amount. [more inside]
I work for a pretty big private university in a smallish Japanese city, and have a permanent position (I’m tenured, plus it’s generally hard to fire employees here). However, this doesn’t mean that all is well. [more inside]

I am looking for resources for following and understanding Canadian politics. I read the news regularly but I would like to have a better sense of political news, specifically what is happening, why, and when. I am also looking for ways to be more involved. [more inside]
Sometimes, while driving, I notice a dangerous situation — another driver who, I worry, hasn't seen me and will cause an accident — and I do nothing, hoping for the best. Afterward, I berate myself for this dangerously passive behavior. How can I improve? Is there some way to practice defensive driving other than just more driving? [more inside]
I used to have two YouTube accounts - a personal and a professional one. At some point a number of years ago, Google wanted to default me to using my professional one and I remember it took repeated selection efforts and whatnot to eventually get it to use my personal one instead. (I would prefer my personal browsing, subscribing, and liking habits be unlinked to my professional account, and I rarely use my professional one as evidenced by this years-later question.) Now I have no idea how - if at all - to access my old professional one. [more inside]
My husband and I bought a foreclosure last fall and after extensive interior repairs we are ready to tackle the outside. My husband couldn't care less about this so I'm the queen of the castle. Here is the house in question. It's a modular ranch. We live in southern Maine. [more inside]
I'd like to have somewhere other than the couch for guests to stay when they visit me. I live in a moderate climate (PacNW). Expanding the house itself is not an option, but I do have a long driveway. So my thought is some kind of minimal room-on-wheels with windows, electricity, and insulation, and not much else. Who makes such a thing? What are my options? [more inside]
I am an abstract artist. For a regional collaboration event, I'm paired with a research scientist and am to make a few paintings based on her work. My researcher does computer modeling of proposed pharmaceuticals, namely those that work on the sphingosine kinase 2. I have some good work so far but am struggling finding ideas for more. More inside. [more inside]
So at work, I was joking around, and I asked my coworker if he saw a certain movie, and I asked if he remembered what happened to a certain character, and he said yes. That character got killed in the movie, and so I told my coworker to not let that happen to him. But I guess he heard it the wrong way and walked away as if he was insulted. I guess he interpreted it as if I hoped it would happen to him. Of course, I did not want that sort of thing to happen to him but he misinterpreted it. If he happens to go to my boss, would that be something that I can get in trouble for??? Like maybe lose my job because it's wishing violence on another person?

It had a round vertical chrome base and then a chrome piece that intersected it horizontally. The face of the clock had four squadrons and there was like a liquid inside that changed color as the hands went around. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I think it was by a famous designer I need to find a picture of it.
I always kind of had it in my head that Republicans and Democrats switched beliefs after the civil rights act passed in the 60s, but I think it may be more complicated than that, so what did the parties believe at various times in history? [more inside]

I've been wondering lately why I don't enjoy fiction or stories, by and large. Furthermore, I wonder what most people do get out of fiction (books, movies, TV, or any other sort of story-based medium)? I ask this because I honestly don't know what sort of stories I might enjoy, or if I even enjoy stories at all. [more inside]
I'd like to find more music like Fool's Gold's "Surprise Hotel". I've liked this song for years and now as I get back into African music I'm wondering what African bands make/ made like this? Or what genres should I look into? [more inside]
My mother recently had surgery for a cancerous tumor and a long-ish hospital stay after. I'm her only daughter, and it was just me and her, battling through it, for what seemed like months but was actually only 12 days. It was scary, stressful and wonderful, an altogether strange experience. Crisis brought out the best in me, and I'm wondering how to hold onto those feelings and this new, better way of being in the world. Details inside. [more inside]

My wife and I are looking to buy a small farm in New Haven County, Connecticut. We've found a property we love, but there is a conservation easement which prohibits subdivision of the land, and per the realtor it limits the ability to build anything that could function as a residence (regardless of whether it can be subdivided). The realtor was very skimpy on what COULD be built on the property. How do we find out what what we can build? [more inside]
I am researching the development of monopolies/conglomerates at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Standard Oil, I.G. Farben, etc.?
This is kind of a vague brainstormy Ask for the hive mind. Last summer we bought a house on a corner lot in a tight-knit city neighborhood (we've been in the neighborhood for many years, we just moved around the corner to a bigger house). The yard is a total blank slate right now. As I work over the next few years to bring it to life, I want to put in features that welcome and delight passers-by and that somehow give something back to the community. [more inside]
I just received a letter notifying me that an examination of my 1044's for 2011 and 2015 is about to begin. The letter is asking for a ton of information some of which I have no idea how to get. We have always been above board, filed our taxes, and paid what we owe. We did live overseas for part of 2011 and stuff got complicated. Looking for advice on having fun while attending a IRS party! Zen Masters, help me? What's a great introductory program for meditation? I need something that will give me daily assignments (ideal would be every day for a month, but I can adapt). It can be a book, an app, a website, whatever. And yes, I know there are many different types of meditation and I will be learning for the rest of my life. I just need something with a bit of structure to get myself and a friend into the habit and hold each other accountable. Thoughts? Thanks guys.

Asking for a friend : my friend is in charge with her team of a women-only event. Her teammates want to present the event as « girls only ». She pointed them the fact that using the word « girl » instead of « woman » is infantilising and implies women are inferior to men, that their intelligence, emotions, and expertise are less valid. Her (male) team mates don’t see where the problem is (ugh). To them words are just words and they're are uncomfortable with using the word "women" instead of "girl" because "that's what we're used to" (ugh again). [more inside]
Hi everyone; So,I want to buy a flat screen TV(53"). I have never owned one before. Anyhow,my concern is that I have heard they are very difficult to set up. I work co-leading a busy team of 30 professionals. We have literally hundreds of active projects at any one moment, some urgent and requiring several of my staff to work regularly (daily/weekly) on them and others only getting sporadic updates (monthly/annually). My co-lead and I are looking for a way we can track all of these projects at a glance (and our team can easily update and also check in on shared projects). Microsoft Projects was suggested - anyone have experience with that app or any other ideas? [more inside]
For the next 18 months or so, I will be living with a sofa that is not to my taste. E.g., I prefer lighter furniture with simple lines, including exposed legs and this behemoth is a queen size sleeper-sofa with green and cream plaid (not exactly, but close enough) fabric. I want to temporarily reupholster the piece without spending a fortune on upholstery fabric. [more inside]

My younger sister is dying from cancer. I’m told she doesn’t have much time left. We’ve said our good-byes, but I can still visit her every few days for now. When I went to see her last night at the hospital, she was sedated and drifting in and out of consciousness. I’m not a chatty sort of person, so I took a couple of books of Dennis Lee poems I used to read to her when we were kids. Reading those aloud was good for a two-hour visit where she was aware I was there, but she wasn’t able to talk. I got some smiles from her, though. Taking the same books again seems low effort, but regular books have a narrative that I don’t think she’ll be able to follow. I think nice words without much of a storyline would work best, but I don’t know much poetry. I was wondering if folks had some suggestions as to what might be appropriate? She is religious (Salvation Army), I am not. She's read a lot of fantasy and romance.
I'm celebrating my 40th birthday next month, and it'll be an homage to my own Arrested Development. Fans of the show, help me come up with some AD-themed cocktail names! [more inside]
I have a side business that has surprised me by doing really well these past couple years (yay!). I am also employed full time (yay!). Today I told someone on the phone that other people in the room were shaking their heads. She asked if they were shaking no or yes. Another coworker remarked later on how weird this was, and how I said "nod" deliberately later in the call. So it made me wonder, in English (especially in US English), is "nod" vs "shake yes" a regional variation?

I have an FSA to which I contribute (for example) $10 per month for a total of $1200 for the year. FSA rules allow me to use the entire $1200 before the end of the year, and the ongoing deductions from my pay will eventually fully fund the account. What happens if I use the entire $1200 before quitting my job on, say June 30? I will have paid in only $600. Am I responsible for the rest? [more inside]
OK, so I have fiction project. To do it properly, it's going to need factual, reality-based insights into a field I'm not an expert in. My buddy is, however, and he's going to consult to get the non-fictiony bits right. Cool! But this isn't like a retired detective doing some fact-checking and correcting process-based details. It's consultation on some core thematic & big idea stuff. Like imagine Orwell tried to write Animal Farm but only had a Wikipedia-level grasp of the USSR. How do I credit that?
Hello hive mind, especially those with project management expertise! I am at the starting line of a quick, three-month sprint to revamp a large website. I am looking for your best practices, tools, tips, and tricks for managing the process(es) to get from "terrible, ancient, overgrown website" to "well structured information" -- not at the information architecture or navigational levels but in terms of getting the best content on each page. More details within. [more inside]
It’s been about five years since I last thought about birth control, as that is when I had my first IUD put in. It’s been great not having to think about it at all, but all good things must come to an end in August. Before getting another one inserted, I thought I'd check and see what other methods people use and like. [more inside]
We're loading up the car and heading to North Carolina for a wedding in late June, from Long Island. I'd love some ideas and tips for things to do, places to stay along the way. We're planning to break the trip up quite a bit and make an event of it. We've never roadtripped with the li'l dude before though and we don't really know how he'll handle things like hotels, long drives, camping(?), etc. Any thoughts and ideas are welcome. [more inside]

I'm enrolled in a weekly beginner's Tai Chi class and I am honestly truly terrible because I have co-ordination and balance issues. The class is mixed ability and quite large and I want to be able to practice on my own at home. There are tons of videos on youtube and websites but I can't tell which of them are yay! and which suck. I just want something for the first 10-15 movements so I know when to turn my wrists and when to drop the invisible ball!
I know it's probably an absurd question, but if I don't graduate with highest honors from my university, how badly have I hurt my chances of getting into a top grad program? I have a very checkered academic past, and I worry constantly about needing to prove that I've turned my life around. I'm working on coming to terms with that, and with what I understand to be a very common confidence problem among students, but just for the sake of hearing it, how much does it matter to graduate with highest honors? My partner's beloved pristine white 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood was recently totaled (and it wasn't his fault-not that it matters). I salvaged the hood ornament and a Cadillac emblem. I'd like to frame it as a surprise birthday gift. Needs to be displayed on a wall because space is limited. The ornament and the emblem are not connected. A shadow box display would be okay but I'd love to find a unique or inventive or even whimsical way to frame and display it. Thanks!
Who is this? The photo shows up early in the movie when we are shown Sebastian's apartment, and then at the end on the wall of Seb's.
I have a adult male cat on trial adoption from a shelter- today is day 7 of 10. He was considered too shy to be in the actual shelter so was in a foster home. He's really warmed up to me and is mostly doing normal cat stuff, but is yowling off and on all night, every night. He's got food, water, clean litter and access to the whole house (including my bedroom) while doing this. Needless to say, I can't sleep and it's making me crazy. [more inside]
We and our 6 month old baby live in a 1930's built house in AZ, it's a little ramshackle but we like it fine. For the elementary-aged McGees (7 and 5, one with special needs), can they go through security holding a parent's hand? I want to be at the airport early enough to make the flight but not SO early my kids lose their minds with boredom -- how early? More details within. [more inside]

For the last few months, I've been situationally depressed – I've been dealing with a breakup, shake-ups at work and other life stuff. I need some suggestions for restaurants in Midtown that will accept a reservation of 15 people without going through the catering/special events departments and reserving a private room and all that. This is for a casual business meeting of high level execs who are not all that fancy, so a midrange bar & grill-type place is fine, but I'm not looking for like, TGIFridays in Times Square. Main priorities are 1. Not wildly expensive and 2. Have a liquor license. [more inside]

My first thought is to approach FIDM (Fashion Institute) Calling on MeFites for suggestions for other local possibilities/solutions.

You're not my doctor, but I can't get in touch with him right now. I typically take 15 mg of Prevacid (the only mg sold OTC that I can find) but I am having breakthrough heartburn a few days a week. I know prescription Prevacid comes in 30 mg, but the boxes of 15mg all say "Do not take more than 1 capsule a day." My plan was to take 30 mg all at once at the usual time I take 15mg (once a day.) Is this acceptable? Does the delayed-release aspect of the OTC Prevacid make this a bad idea?
Need a restaurant for Chicago, for dinner, this Thursday, for 7. Must have: good cocktails, at least one vegetarian option that is not pasta. Not be south of Congress, not be north of Montrose. Budget is pretty flexible, looking for nicer or something with a little wow factor, like a view. One diner really hates shared plates--so no small plate communal eating thing. [more inside]
We recently received a fruit basket that contained a container of what I now know were greengages. I had never seen them before, and now we want more. We go to Fairway on the Upper West Side regularly and have never run across them, and I've never spotted them in Whole Foods either. Hoping someone has seen them either recently or regularly, ideally in Manhattan? Dean and DeLuca? Chinatown?

When I need to rest my brain, I tend to play NethackW (the tile interface, not ASCII). I have a 5 year old, going on 6 who spends a lot of time on the internet. This has been pretty great for him- I'm sure his language skills, maths and general knowledge are far greater than they would have been without them. However I'm concerned that he will inevitably encounter things that I'd rather he didn't. Tools or rules for balancing giving him the freedom to explore without being too laissez-faire? [more inside]

I am in a dire situation with my mother in law who is poor and (now) homeless. She has been in the hospital for the past month+ due to a suicide attempt, which has also resulted in her being denied return to her independent living home. The hospital has decided she is no longer a threat to herself and needs to be discharged. The hospital social worker has been unable to find her low-income assisted living and is now threatening to put her in a cab and send her to a homeless shelter unless my husband and I take her in. We can't. What can we do? [more inside]
I've been following an organization in my town closely for a while; they do awesome work in a field I'm interested in. A few weeks ago, they posted a job on their website. I sent in my resume and cover letter, but heard nothing. I checked the website a week ago and the job posting has been removed, replaced with "we are not currently hiring." I really want to work there, whether in that specific capacity, or another role. It's a small nonprofit (only 3 fulltime staff), so the staff wear many hats. I believe I have the skills and work experience to make myself a valuable addition. Assume this is my dream job. What can I do, if anything? Reach out to the director directly? Offer to volunteer? How much contact from a prospective employee (hopefully) is too much contact before they get annoyed?
I'm a woman in my early twenties who is experiencing attraction to women and I'm confused. I’m feeling attraction towards my best friend who is bisexual, but I’m not sure if I should act on it, due to morality and fears that she won’t be receptive. How can I explore this identity without acting in ways I might regret? I’d like to build my confidence before I become apathetic towards myself or stifle a part of myself. [more inside]

I do not think strategically, for reasons. Mostly principles, as it feels like manipulation which is not my jam. I am noticing that a colleague is getting ahead through strategy despite low quality work (lots of missed deadlines, typos, red flags in internal audits) and questionable technical skills, because she is managing up with the supervisor. It is clearly a "sucking up" approach, with a clear agenda in all conversations where boss is present that reads as this artificial "I am your friend and you really like me." I am wanting to start an online literary magazine on the side while I pursue a MFA and intern in the coming fall. I am wondering if it is worth starting a literary magazine to make some pocket change? I know some magazines struggle, and I am wondering if there's any advice on how to make an ample amount? My first aim was non-profit, but there isn't much money in it, unless donations are given. I suppose it depends on the philosophical motive. I want to share and preserve the literary works, but I also want to make some money while doing this. Literarure and poetry are my two greatest passions. It's a lot of work to design and market this out of free labour; I do a lot of volunteer work myself, bur some extra cash with this project is something I would like to pursue. Some people may not view literary magazines as a business franchise while others may do so. Thoughts? Thanks, RW.
I generally fall asleep very quickly. Kiss my husband, light out, head on pillow, and I'm out. My husband finds this remarkable and says it generally takes him 15-30 minutes to sleep. Google tells me most people fall asleep within ten minutes, and falling asleep too quickly can indicate over-tiredness, but I've been like this forever and don't feel tired at all. Because my husband has always been so surprised by this (even after many years bedsharing), I am curious to know how long it actually takes others to fall asleep! More sleepflakes within. Gmail has been deleting all emails from a particular sender and I can't figure out why. The obvious answer is that there's some filter set up which is causing this to happen, but if so, I can't find it. There's no filter set up, that I can tell, which would move all these emails to the trash. Is it possible that there are filters somewhere else in gmail that I should be checking? I've been looking in the obvious place--under Settings, in Filters and Blocked Addresses--and there's nothing that would explain how this is happening. (The address is not blocked, either.)

For reasons, I lost my 4 front teeth in my early teens. My parents couldn't afford much in the way of fixing this. The dentist very kindly built me a "flipper"; what was supposed to be a temporary piece until something more appropriate could be acquired. This is done in both Vanilla Sky and in Captain America: The First Avenger. Please tell me there's a third movie out there that does this same thing!
I want to replace a drop ceiling with a regular ceiling in my house. I can't DIY this. Who (what kind of professional) do I need to call?

I miss writing a blog - the creative outlet it gives, the community that can develop, and the way I can focus and deepen my ideas by putting pen to paper, so to speak. So time for a new blog with a short, catchy title that is available as a .com! I'm planning on writing a personal/lifestyle blog, with a focus on parenting/relationships (but NOT a mommy blog), minimalism/simplicity, outdoors, adventures, and developing habits to lead a good life (however one defines it). Anon Jr. knows a transgender boy from her high school who's asking everyone if he can crash on their couch. I supervise an activity that they're both involved in and yesterday the boy spent the entire time talking about how he needs a place to stay, how his therapist (anon jr. thinks a school therapist) was late so that's why he was late to the activity, just literally crying out for help. I've searched previous questions, and while helpful, there's not quite enough recent info. I'm looking for a moving company for a move within NYC that will also pack up everything for me. That part is most important; I don't want to have to do my own packing. [more inside]
I'm managing an event where we're inviting people to test out some super rad bouncy sneakers by using this bungee swing (like this but hanging from metal scaffolding). We want to give them a cool takeaway video that would ideally be a Boomerang (if you're not familiar with the app, it turns your short video into a back and forth loop, like one of these). I think this is the perfect format to show the experience : boing! BUT, we want these to be professional. Like shot with a real camera rather than an iPhone. And we want to slap our logo on it in post. With a possible zoom-in on the shoes. Is there a way to do all this? My research is showing me that the app won't let me fiddle with an existing vid (I think). We can put a person or two with a computer for editing there on site but I'm also not sure how fast this would be, or how many people we'd need. Solutions?
I want to say naughty adult things to someone on my iPhone but my 11yo son uses it a lot to watch youtube videos and I don't want him to see it. I don't want to delete the message thread because I like reading it back. Is it possible to hide a single message thread in between comments?

I love my new cardigan, but it's just a tad bit itchy. It's 50% viscose, 25% polyamide, and 25% wool. Will washing it make it softer, or should I just return it? I'm disappointed that such a low percentage of wool would bother me, but here we are. Is there any way to treat wool-containing fabrics to make them softer?

I'm ready to go from sedentary to starting regular exercise again. In the past, one of the things I've noticed that often kills my motivation to exercise is that when I start cardio I'll start getting pretty itchy all over my body - in some cases even a rash/hives would develop. It's a huge motivation killer and probably at least partially responsible (outside of weak will) for halting many previous attempts at exercise. Have you encountered this? Tips to overcome it? I would like to know what changes I can make to look and feel better. I have two small children under 2, I am in my mid 30's ... I don't always feel 100% and I think I could feel better (obviously- I've just had 2 kids!) I want things that have a lot of bang for their buck... For example- daily light stretching or teeth whitening- neither take a lot of time but they do a lot to make me feel and look better. Sauna a couple times a week is a bigger time commitment but is VERY good for my skin and also helps me deal with stress. What other things can I do or changes can I make? [more inside]

We've had to ban Hamilton from our lives, temporarily, because it was starting to make us all crazy. So, I'm looking to find some new musicals we can listen to in the car. One of the things that really worked with the Hamilton soundtrack was that the kids could follow the plot. It wasn't just a series of songs that only made sense if you already knew the story. What other Broadway soundtracks share that quality and might be appealing to kids ages 5 to 11?
I'm not sure if it's possible but I'm trying to grow the beach roses (Rosa Rugosa) of my Maine youth, outdoors in the ground, here in central South Carolina (zone 8a). They're going to get a lot of afternoon sun. Are there things I can do to help them live through the summer? TYIA!
We went for Korean food recently, and with our grill we were served a red dipping sauce - it was bright red, had a paste consistency, and tasted slightly spicy and quite salty/savoury. The waitress said it was called 'dengu', but I must have misheard as nothign comes up when I google. Any idea what this was?
I have a neighbour (in a small community) who is high-strung and nervy and now has some kind of strong reaction of dislike and judgement towards. It's her own story, and she does this regularly with people. I've been ignoring it but I find my response is to avoid going where I will be around her and to withdraw into my shell. It affects me more than I would like it to. I would feel much better if I could somehow make peace. Ideas?

I remember seeing a one-off comic strip a few years back, in a sketchy style, where two cats were either fencing or dueling with swords, in panel one they adopted the en garde stance, in panel two they lunged at each other, and in panel three they were both on all fours curiously sniffing at the tips of the swords as all cats tend to do to any outstretched finger or object [more inside]

My daughter has for some time been very interested in medical topics and the body, and is learning anatomical jargon the way some kids learn the names of dinosaurs. I'm sure there must be some great iPad apps to indulge her curiousity, but I'm confused by the choices. The field seems to be dominated by anatomy apps aimed at medical students on the one hand, and crappy or creepy and not very educational games aimed at small children on the other. Do you know of quality apps suitable for a 10 year old?

From "The Third Man" by Green. Martins and the police are in the sewer chasing Harry. Martins said," It's odd thing-I don't even know your name." " Bates, sir." He gave a low laugh in the darkness. "This isn't my usual beat. Do you know the Horseshoe, sir?" "Yes." "And the Duke of Grafton?" "Yes." "Well, it takes a lot to make a world." My questions are..what the Horseshoe and the Duke of Grafton are and, what this Bates's last phrase means. I wonder if both are the names of the popular places like Sherlock Holmes House.. in the UK and if they are located in his usual beat ?? I googled them, but I couldn't find the answer.Thank you for helping me.

We spend a lot of time together, have a lot of fun and good sex, but he's not the most romantic person in the world, in large part because he's not very emotional. The other day a good friend of mine told me that she felt like my boyfriend and I were "just friends" and that she didn't think I should be very invested in a long term commitment with him. We will be driving from Chicago to Daytona this weekend to spend spring break with my parents. Last year, we traveled the same route, setting out on Good Friday (along with a glut of other Midwesterners) and found terrible traffic jams due to construction on I-24 in Chattanooga (mid-day) and on I-75 in Atlanta (at rush hour, duh). Are these routes still under construction? [more inside]
A strange series of events has ended up with me needing to provide the text that will appear on a "handy general information" spread of a 365-day planner book. I have a diagnosed vision problem and a diagnosed learning disability. The symptoms for both are very similar. Over the past year I figured out how to upcycle interesting clothing out of thrift store finds. Now that I've outfitted myself and my partner with more than enough cute one-of-a-kind shirts, I am thinking of ways to expand this hobby to others who have expressed interest. Someone at work was joking around and said that he “needs a SWAT team”. My other coworker mentioned that using the word SWAT is inappropriate to use in the workplace since the W in SWAT stands for “weapons” and in today’s news, there are a lot of crazy things happening. And I told him that he is crazy, it’s totally fine to use that term. But he then went ahead and said that it refers to violence, and anyone who uses the word SWAT at work in that way can get in trouble, and possibly lose their job. He also says that any other word that refers to violence can get someone in trouble. What does everyone else think?

Today, and a few times in the recent past, I have seen cars with a bumper sticker with a stylized "AA" in a circle. The logo was red, white, and blue. Unlike the most common variants of the Alcoholics Anonymous logo, however, there was no triangle in it. This looks like it except for the color, though it seems to belong to some sort of German drain company (why this would be on a Honda hatchback in the US is anyone's guess). This generic auto-generated logo almost looks like it. What could it be?

Hi MeFi! Someone I know recently mentioned that they were performing laser removal of some sun damaged skin to "prevent it from becoming cancerous". I didn't know this was even a thing, and as a bit of a hypochondriac it caused me to worry a little. About 15 years ago, I went on a trip to Mexico and got some horrible sunburns on my shoulders, causing them to become very permanently freckled and (I think) making the skin on my back quite a bit more sensitive. I never really worried about it, but my acquaintance's comments made me think that maybe I should examine the area more closely. I know you are not my doctor, but is there anything to worry about if it's been 15 years with no real issues, or is there still an increased risk of skin cancer even all those years later? Also, I've never heard of laser removal for this sort of issue, and I couldn't find much on Google about it. Is this actually a common procedure for sun damaged skin, or is my acquaintance just being overly cautious? Thank you!

I'm surprised how hard it's been to find this by googling: a reliable source that simply lists common foods (basic ingredients, including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, etc.) along with the nutritional content of (defined quantities of) each. The list would ideally be sophisticated enough to distinguish between cooked and uncooked versions of the foods, and include dozens of foods, if not hundreds. At the moment I'm only interested in protein content, so that needs to be one of the nutrients listed. Anyone know of (hopefully free) sources that offer this?

The upshot: we are first-time homebuyers. We were diligent in asking questions and turning in our paperwork, but our loan officer dragged his feet and gave us misleading information about the loan process. Interest rates have been climbing...and we ended up on the wrong side of this week's rate hike. I am so angry that we didn't get better guidance. The extra costs aren't going to kill us, but thinking about how much it's going to cost us in the long run is making me sick with anxiety. How can I deal with this? [more inside]

What are some fiction books you've read that changed your outlook on daily life after you finished them? I'm thinking of books that have the potential to make daily life seem more interesting and adventurous, or to give a new perspective on the seemingly mundane. Is there some benefit to using a mortgage broker that we'd miss out on if we went with the cheaper, online option? All mortgage shopping or condo/townhome-buying tips are welcome!

I'm a professor in a dance department. We're making a new gallery website. As a recruitment tool, we want to improve our Google search hits when people search for the phrase "dance departments." The URL for the site is a long bureaucratic monstrosity. But we've also bought the domain OSUdance.com. If we distributed OSUdance.com and had it bounce to the long university URL, does that diminish our SEO—that people searching for "dance department" would find us any less than if we had distributed the long URL? Thanks so much for any guidance.

We have a 2-year old son who is in daycare full time during the school year, and three days per week in the summer. Recently, the room he is now in has introduced special "camps" during the day for holidays and special events - like Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and there was a "Winter Fun Camp" where the kids got to watch a movie and have a treat. The camps all cost $10, in addition to the regular cost of daycare. Our concern is that, while we can pay for the camps, we don't think that all families can do so, and we are uncomfortable with there being differences between the kids who go and the kids who don't. Right now, our son is too young to recognize the differences - or even care about going to the camps or not - but eventually he and the other kids will figure it out. So, my question is what do other parents do in these types of situations? [more inside]

I'm leaving next week for a 45-day treatment program. Friends are staying over to watch my place and feed my cats. I need to figure out some way to inform my onsite building manager of the situation, as well as advise her that she won't be able to contact me during that period. (She generally contacts me via phone or email once or twice a month about various matters, and in rehab I won't have access to my mobile or a computer.) I'd prefer, of course, to avoid divulging any embarassing or potentially incriminating details. Can anyone help me think of an appropriately euphemistic explanation?

I did a Skype interview for an assistant professor position this past Friday and I believe that it went really well, committee said I will "definitely" be hearing from them within two weeks. Two weeks from my interview is my due date, exactly. The camera was aimed (as is usual) at my head and shoulders, so my 9 months pregnant status was not visible nor did it come up. I emailed a short formal thank you to the committee at the end of the day on Friday. The position is at the same university where I already work, but in a different department. It's a non-tenure seeking, teaching oriented position. I've just been to the doctor today, and she confirms I'm on track to deliver at or around my due date. Today is Monday, the first work day after my interview. My questions are within! [more inside]
I was at a nearby megamart that prided itself on being bi-lingual, everyone spoke Spanish and Portuguese! Apart from their excellent on-site fishmonger and butcher, who were very helpful and friendly, their cookware section had a lot of culinary knives of a pattern I hadn't seen before, and looked outlandish to my French/German/Japanese/Indian sensibilities (The Bonti, with coconut scraper, is the one kitchen utensil I really, really want, but know I am just not equipped to use it.) When making popcorn on the stove, I always pop in a couple "tester kernels" with the oil while it is heating. I was taught that once those kernels have popped, the oil is sufficiently hot and the rest of the kernels can then be added. Why is this necessary? Doesn't the act of adding a bunch of room-temperature kernels bring down the temperature of the oil anyway, causing the oil to have to re-heat? Can't I just add all the kernels in at once and let everything heat up together? The testers never appear to taste burnt or off to me- in fact it's impossible for me to tell which ones they were once all the other kernels have popped. [more inside]
I would like to purchase a bible that is easy to read, is clear on intent and can educate me. I am not religious. I would like to read this historically. I want to understand why people think that their personal beliefs are more important that other peoples personal beliefs. The concept confuses me. I would like to read a bible that is just direct and specific. What should I read?

Going into commercial on season 24, episode 12 of Saturday Night Live, there were three short parodies of VH1's Behind the Music promos. One was Gwyneth Paltrow doing Joan Jett, one was Chris Kattan doing John Oates, and one was Jimmy Fallon doing Colin Hay. I have looked in vain for these for years. (They are cut out of the episode replays.) The closest I've come is a deleted YouTube video. Are they out there somewhere?

I would really like to know: 1. How should the restaurant have handled this? 2. What should my husband and I have done? (semi)Short story: While we were in a vacation town this weekend, a server lost our debit card between charging our card and returning it to us. We were not notified right away, when we sought out an assistant manager, she was unaware of the situation, the manager in charge was notified even later, and then did not apologize, got defensive, and escalated quickly. She was making the scene in the restaurant, not us. The police came and asked us outside. We found out the manager had told the police that we wouldn't leave and wanted them to escort us out. She had never asked us to leave and we were still waiting for information! We ended up filing a police report, and clearly we won't ever go back. What *should* have happened? [more inside]

So much so, I thought, that I shouldn't self-publish, because it would seem like I stole her scene. Can you help find that passage? [more inside]

Lately I've been trying to understand a weird issue with my perception. I've had episodes of it throughout my life, mostly when I've been going through stress or emotional change. Usually I feel as though I'm not really connected to my surroundings and I zone out when I try to focus on them. It's like there's some sort of invisible barrier keeping me from grasping the reality of the things I see and how they relate to myself, rather than just seeing them like pictures. [more inside]

How did people – especially women, working class students, people of colour – go about getting a BA, and sometimes also a PhD, in the pre-WW2 era? I'm a 31 year old male who is Filipino and living at home with my dad, step-mom, and step-grandparents. I've been wrestling with the idea of moving out, as men in western society face a major stigma if he is still living at home especially within the dating field. However, it's the opposite in Asian culture and making it out on your own (having your own place without sharing) in Los Angeles is a major challenge if you're not a nurse, engineer, business owner, and etc. I work as an Admin assistant at a UCLA clinic, and I am also working as a per diem MRI assistant on the weekends. I have already filed my taxes, and my gross income didn't even reach 40k last year. I realized that it didn't make sense to move out and have a whole paycheck go to rent. We bought something together as a gift for the house, agreeing we'd split it 50/50, and now she refuses to take my portion. I'd like to build a shop light/tinker light out of cheap LED COBs, but I'm confused about how to size the driver. COBs have wattage, voltage and amperage ratings. To my understanding, to run 3 10w COBs, I would need a driver that puts out 30 watts. The voltage seems pretty straight forward, it's represented by a single number and the driver should be capable of delivering that. The amperage is where I get REALLY confused. [more inside]

We're brainstorming about housing options, from renting an unused vacation trailer to WWOOFing (he'd do the work part). Help us think about what might be possible, and what might make sense in that context.
I'm looking for Cat + Jack, but for adults: cute, colorful, comfy clothes at normal prices. (More clothes I like but are only for kids: Tea Collection and basically everything in this thread.) I get brightly colored leggings from Forever 21. T-shirts are not my favorite; I really like tunics or dresses over leggings or with tall socks. I know about Hanna Andersson (still, the adult clothes are not as good as the kids' clothes) and Gudrun Sjoden, but I'm not spending $100 on a jersey-knit dress; I want to pay ~$30. Please hope me.

So I'm following the US Healthcare debate a bit (from Germany) and what I am wondering is where all the money the US is pouring into it is going. It would seem that *somebody* has to get extremely rich under this system. I think this can be a very complicated question, but are there any statistics about which Healthcare entities, in comparison to other countries are "fatter"? [more inside]

I have been a longtime fan of Celebrity's work. Though Celeb is a household name in their home country, they are more of a cult figure in my country, and as such, it's been relatively easy for me to meet them briefly a few times over the years. In the past year, however, I have found myself in the exciting (but also somewhat surreal) position of developing both a professional and personal (non-romantic) relationship with Celeb's Sibling. I've had the great soul ballad "Rainbow Road" caught in my head all morning and it's bugging me that I don't know the proper name for the device used in one of the verses. "Him" could refer to either the judge or the man with the knife. What is it called when you intentionally use an ambiguous pronoun for rhetorical effect? Is there a specific name for doing this between two other nouns that it could refer to?

In the mid 2000s my parents took me to see a foreign film set in a boarding school, where a kid rebels against his parents (who I believe run the school) by setting up a co-operative to distribute banned items. I mainly remember a scene at the end where, in a school assembly and/or meal, a large number of pupils and teachers spontaneously declare they are members of the co-operative in front of the kid's parents in a kind of I'm-Spartacus/Captain-my-captain sort of moment. What film was this? [more inside]

I love shopping for my one-year-old at Tea Collection. The clothes are stylish yet practical, durable, and fairly-priced for the quality. I also really like that the designs are inspired by cultures around the world - it keeps things fresh and interesting. Where else can I find similar kids' clothes? I prefer to shop online but all suggestions are welcome!

Heading to Paris for a vacation in a week. Would appreciate any tips you have for a pair of Americans in their late 30s (traveling without kids) on proper etiquette in France—the kinds of things that might not be obvious to travelers from the U.S. Regrettably we do not speak French, but any advice is welcome. Thanks!

Grisen (The Pig) is a danish short film directed by Dorthe Warnø Høgh. I saw it at a short film festival years ago and I would like to watch it again. I found it on YouTube but without subtitles. Any ideas on where I could find it ? It's okay if I have to pay for it.
I'm creating a training for young software engineers on the topic of quotidian negotiation within a team (so, not like buying a house or negotiating salary, but more like negotiating project scope or distribution of tasks across a collaborative team). I'm looking for examples from media (movies, TV shows, books, podcasts, sports, other things I'm not thinking of) of negotiations with happily unexpected outcomes, especially where the outcome wasn't on the initial set of proposals. But, really, any examples of high quality, collaborative problem solving would fit.
Yes, it's time for your regularly scheduled "what novel is like Helen DeWitt's The Last Samurai" question. My husband and I really like quiet novels about intellectual, introspective, somewhat solitary main characters in which you also learn something about a subject you might not have known anything about before. Bonus if it is beautifully written. What are some novels that might scratch that itch? [more inside]
I am trying to get into to the IT field but my main priority is work life balance. Working no more than 40 hours a week with weekends off would be ideal and bonus would be holidays off ( especially Christmas and new years). The job title doesn't matter to me nor how entry level or how much the pay is. Does such a job exist in tech where you can work 8:00am to 4:30pm M-F with very little to no overtime? Reason: Family and Boyfriend time on the weekend is important to me. [more inside]

I need to create a line graph for work. The left side should be numbered 1 through 15. The bottom would have fifteen names on it. There would be three lines tracking people's performance in three metrics. This doesn't seem like it should be that hard, but I keep coming across tools that are either too limited to allow fifteen names or three lines or are more complex than I need and require a learning curve that is too steep for this simple project. What should I use?
My psychiatrist has suggested one of the following drugs to treat bipolar II that hasn't responded well to previous treatment: olanzapine/fluoxetine combo (symbyax), aripiprazole (abilify) or sodium valproate (depakote). After much lobbying, the council has planted some trees on the London housing estate where I live. Three years on, some are doing well, others less so. Some have been planted in grass-covered areas, and the grass has regrown up to the trunks. Could this be a major factor in why they're not growing very well? Is it likely to make much of a difference if I remove the grass around the base of the tree? Do I risk damaging the roots if I do?

Late at night, I love beautiful sounding spoken word. Please help me find some more. The content is far less important than that it sounds good, and beautiful verbiage is more important than meaning. English is optional. Background sound is fine, as long as it doesn’t overwhelm the text, and good production is a plus. My canonical examples would be: the velvet voice of Joe Frank; the closing, spoken word segments of the Late Night Tales mix series (Stephen Rea, David Tennant, Cillian Murphy); Alan Watts - though he loses points for seriousness of content. Thanks!
How do I get motivated and start moving with a new job search? I am quite tired of my job and ready to do something else - I'm tired because there is too much to do, and I've been in my role for awhile, and I don't see a future at my confusing jumble of a company. But I'm dragging my feet, for two main reasons: 1) I'm afraid of change (what if every place is like this??) 2) the possibilities are daunting because I could move anywhere (where do I go, how do I even search when I think I'm open to many locales??) How do I calmly, effectively focus efforts on finding something new?

I've played some games where a goal, or sometimes THE goal, is to get an NPC to fall in love, or lust, with your character. And this is accomplished by ME learning a lot about THEIR likes/dislikes, giving gifts, doing quests/favors, saying just the right thing at the right time, and putting up with a lot of rejection for some puny scraps of romance. Shades of real life! Just once, I want to be the one being courted, not have to do all the work in this relationship myself, damn it! [more inside]

Asking for a friend who works at a large non-profit (400+ staff). It seems there has been a lot of turn-over in staff and change in executive team structure this past year. I'd be glad to hear from anyone, doctor or not, who can help figure this out. The symptom that bugs me most is the constant pressure in both ears that I’ve been feeling since October. Accompanying symptoms that started about the same time: often my earlobes burn, my scalp feels tight and itches, my exterior ears itch, and I get headaches. The ear pressure is constant; the others come and go in no particular combination. Sometimes my face and ears feel very hot to me but not to someone else’s touch. I’ve felt like I had a fever several times but the thermometer showed 97.5F. [more inside]

Hopefully, we will be closing on a house at the end of the month. On the front door, there is a door knocker in the shape of a treble clef. In the last year or so I've noticed that there's something going on with my feet when I exercise or even do a moderate walk. They will start to ache all around, with the acheyness frequently stronger on the outside edges. The acheyness eases up when I tie my sneakers really loosely, which tells me it might be a foot swelling issue. That was pretty manageable when all I was doing was walking or indoor cardio, but I've been taking a tap class and my shoes need to be pretty tightly tied for that. [more inside]

My partner and I lost our beloved kitty of many years, and after taking some time, we're starting to think about adopting a new cat. Today we visited a local shelter and met a sweet, loving 1 year-old kitty who is missing one hind leg. We know that "tripod" cats tend to get along quite well and we'd take care to provide steps and a good soft bed. But my partner and I are both usually gone during the day, and we're wondering if a three-legged kitty might be more prone to falling, and whether she might be better off with more supervision than we could provide. Are we worrying too much?

We have a fairly fast wireless network but our house generates a lot of interference from various systems. Without changing our router, what TV streaming device has the best caching system to cope with intermittent wireless slowness? E.g. I want to watch a movie on Amazon Prime, which systems will fetch and cache as much as possible on the device itself, so playing does not freeze the moment there is packet loss? Currently we have an older model Roku and are considering upgrading. Mostly we watch Plex or Amazon Prime. If this is all mediated at the app level and the device itself gets no say in caching, that would be useful to know.

But with the food industry always seeking the latest spin on novelty for selling the same food products in different ways, why haven't we seen coffee sold in tea bags (which seem like they're basically the same material as coffee filters), and why don't I see tea being marketed to be used with coffee pots or french presses (which seem like they're basically the same as tea pots)? On February 13, my blog traffic, as measured by statcounter.com, increased by more than 10 times over what it had been for a long time previously. This is the second-largest number of hits I've ever gotten. On February 14, traffic was back to normal again. On February 15, it was about three times normal. From the 16th onward it's been normal. I'd like to know what the hell was happening. [more inside]

I'm a single lady doctor. I've been on tinder for a few months, but haven't run into anyone I work with on there because I worked about 20 miles from where I live. Now I'm working in my home town and feel weirded out about patients seeing me on there. I have a distinctive name and look, so it would not be difficult. Is there a way to anonymize tinder more effectively? Should I just delete my profile? Is there another dating app that would suit me better?

Does anyone have advice on how to get over this? Thanks. [more inside]
We're trying to pinpoint the origin of this modernist geometric encaustic tile design pattern. It's still produced in Spain (where they're called baldosas - or losas - hidráulicos, one factory calling it "Lebrija". In those colours in particular, it's reminiscent of futurist graphics in the style of Balla or Depero. But it might just as likely just be a regional Spanish-moresque standard? [more inside]

There was a roach in my Frosted Flakes this morning. Which sounds like a line from an Insane Clown Posse song, doesn't it? Anyway, it quickly scurried away and I don't hold a grudge, but now I have to decide whether to throw everything out, or throw out just the bowl and eat the rest of the nearly-full box, or eat both because insects run over everything and this is probably just a case of ritual contamination, not a health risk. What would you do? And does it make a difference if it wasn't a cockroach but a generic bug? I couldn't quite tell either way.

I broke up with my fiance two months ago. Of course I've been reviewing our relationship, and it just dawned on me that my ex may have manipulated me into believing that I asked him to choke me during sex... While we were having sex one day, he choked me (lightly). He didn't ask me first whether he could do that. Afterwards, he said "dyou know where the choking came from? You were putting my hand around your neck the last time we had sex, so I thought you'd like it this time". I have no memory of ever putting his hands around my neck, or asking him to choke me . It's not the kind of thing that I would ask for. But at the time i believed him: I figured that maybe i must asked for it before and forgot about it. Now, I'm thinking that he straight up lied. Im feeling confused, and I feel like it was an abusive thing for him to do (if he in fact was trying to manipulate me). I feel like confronting him about this. Is it a bad idea to tell him that I think he lied? [more inside]

Hi Metas... I have a very nice white pottery barn armoire that I love but I am ready for something a bit different. I just want more of a distressed antique look (still in white), and have watched a few tutorials on distressing and using chalk paint. My question is, I want it to remain white so if I use the white chalk paint and then distress it using sand paper around edges and elsewhere, will it even look any different since it is already painted white? Do I need to distress the paint that is on there now but sanding a bit to get down to the wood first, and then paint with chalk paint over and distress again?
