I work for a services solution company. Recently, I've been interviewing heavily within that company at other units/accounts that are not my own. The other day, I had an excellent interview with a District Manager and she made many comments about me being exactly what they were looking for. Since then, I received an email from her saying that she had not selected me for that position, however, there is another position within her district she would like me to apply for. [more inside]
On a walk through the alley behind my apartment building, I discovered a beautiful vintage vinyl-upholstered bar next to the dumpster, abandoned by some craigslist-averse neighbor. Unfortunately, it appears to have absorbed several gallons of this morning's downpour. There are a few tears in the vinyl, and the foam beneath is saturated- ditto for the plywood shelves. Is it salvageable? Should I try to use a hairdryer, or will that only hasten the development of dry rot?

I've never ice skated in my life. In a week, I'm starting lessons, in the eventual hope of learning how to play hockey and joining a club league down the line. I am 39, 6'3" and around 250 pounds. My exercise regimen is walking/running 4-5 times a week, 3-5 miles at a time. I have questions, as a total novice to on-ice sports of any kind:
- What is going to frustrate me the most?
- What is going to hurt the most (and how do I treat it?)
- What's the most important thing to remember, so I don't get frustrated?

I've played every version of D&D and am wondering, is there an RPG that doesn't take 3 hrs to make a character, where combat can be resolved in less than an hour and doesn't require a dozen books? I'm flexible on the genre, but fantasy or scifi is what I'm most interested in, something that can be used over the longterm, not just for a few games (RISUS and it's pals appeal but doesn't seem durable enough), with enough flexibility for me to mash things together but without me having to design my own homebrew from 2 or 3 systems. I've done that. Lots more inside... [more inside]

I've been accepted to PhD programs in neuroscience at NYU, University of Chicago, and into an MSc program in medical biophysics (with a heavy neuroscience focus) at the University of Toronto (most people reclassify into PhDs). The difficulty: 1) No one program is exactly perfect. 2) My partner-in-crime is a med student in Toronto, and she will be in Canada for minimum the next 6 years. So what's my best move, considering 1. I hope for a career in research (academia/industry) or science writing. 2. I could see myself spending my life with this girl (but that said, I am 25, for what it is worth) 3. I am concerned that staying in Toronto will limit my career opportunities [more inside]

I'm familiar with scripting languages like python and ruby, but I have no art talent whatsoever, so i'd prefer that whatever I use have art assets available, and I don't want to write an engine from scratch so I'd like to build off of an existing framework. What are my options? Free or paid, doesn't matter. It might be an RPG engine or an adventure game engine, or even a 3d engine, but whatever I use, I'd want something that would let me focus on writing and designing and less on programming the framework.

I'm 22, male, 184 centimeters (~6ft), 70kg (161 pounds), 11% body fat (as judged by one of those imprecise electrical gadgets), and, until recently, fairly sedentary. I'm now running three times a week and plan to start lifting weights another three days a week. For the past two weeks I've been assiduously tracking everything I eat with this software (note: I'm not at all interested in "caloric restriction") and a gram-precise food scale. I'm trying to become generally fit - increase cardiovascular endurance, gain muscle, start fencing again. With all that in mind, how do I decide on nutritional targets? [more inside]

What kind of therapy or self-help can I do to stop picturing all sex taking place in a room where I was abused? [more inside]
I recently asked a relationship question, and came to realize that the main problem was actually my debilitating anxiety and the fact that I need to sort that out before being able to seriously wrestle with my relationship. In one week, I met with 2 different therapists who are very different in their styles, and I have an appointment set up with a psychiatrist for next week (my primary care doctor recommended I see an actual psychopharmacologist.) I am very serious about getting help now that I realize I have been wasting so much time denying the severity of my problems and the genuine abuse I grew up with. My question is, can I see two or even three doctors about these issues? My main fear is getting only one or two perspectives on my problems, and I think I can trust the process more if I feel like I have a diverse set of views, perspectives, and mental frames. Is that outlandish or within the realm of normal behavior? [more inside]

I can't believe I'm asking this, but I couldn't find an answer anywhere: what do the daily high and low temperatures provided with weather forecasts mean? Which is it?

Thanks to a previous post I've been able to get back to the gym and get a great workout going. Now I have a snag. I hurt my rotator cuff years ago (due to a poor benchpress technique or lack thereof). I do the advised exercises for it but regardless, I am unable to lift above my head without injury (and the doc advised against it). Eventually surgery may help. Shoulder presses prior to injury would really bulk up my shoulders but because of this injury I cannot do them anymore. I do dumbbell front and side raises which help but is there any other exercises that might bulk/round the shoulder? I am not going for extremely heavy weights. Just enough to continue to challenge the muscle. Any thoughts?

A little over two years ago, my ex-boyfriend broke up with me. A couple of weeks later, he passed away unexpectedly. The whole situation, the break-up and his death, was incredibly difficult for me. For almost the past two years, I have been in a relationship with someone else; this relationship has gotten really serious over the past year and a half or so. We were friends when my ex-boyfriend and I split, so he has been with me through this whole situation and knows how hard it has been for me. Generally, over the past couple of years, he has been very supportive and understanding of what I am going through. Since my ex passed away, I have had pictures of him and me together in my apartment and as my facebook profile picture. [more inside]

If simply eating too many calories caused me to gain weight then I should be permanently gaining weight every time I eat a pizza and feel stuffed. Yet, I don’t. What factors decide a person’s natural weight? I was watching a documentary about Rocky (the most recent one) and how Sylvester Stallone got in shape for it and did the last part of the movie first while he was still in good shape. It sounded as if his body was going to just lose shape the moment he stopped training. That made me wonder if even people like Stallone have a natural weight that they must fight against every second of every day. [more inside]

Is someone were moving to Denver and having a celebratory party, what would be a good Denver-themed song to play at the climax of this party, i.e. as the cake is being brought out? Rocky Mountain High by John Denver is an obvious choice, but it's kind of slow, not exciting. Something like Elevation by U2 or Gold Digger by Kanye West are better, more upbeat and indirectly related to Denver, but I'd prefer something a bit more obviously connected to Denver. It should also be a song a group of 20-40 year old American geeks would enjoy.

To make things more complicated I lived in NYC and worked in Connecticut. Therefore, I have NY State, NY City and CT state taxes taken out of my pay check. Then I moved to Wisconsin in August of the same year. What do I do/What state should I claim I was living in when I was received my final pay check? 1. Claim I was living in IL? 2. Claim I am not a resident of any state when I was last paid? 3. Claim I was living in WI? 4. Another option I am not thinking about? I run a medium sized (70 room) hotel with my family. The cost of our utilities is a continuing concern for the hotel. Guests routinely check-out of their rooms and leave all of the lights on, heater/air-conditioning on, television and radio playing. There are also incidents where the tap water is left running. We realize that there is a mentality that once the cost of the room has been determined, the guest assumes that they may "use" as much of the room/utility as they can. My question: is there a way for the hotel to place a small sign by the light-switch or the door that advises guests to help us conserve energy without being perceived as rude or cheap? Are there gender-reversed examples of this, ie, single-father + daughter + heroine? And I'm thinking more of action/adventure type stuff, and not straight dramas.

So... nineteen years ago I recorded the top 30 countdown on Mars FM, a radio station in L.A. Four years ago I dumped those cassette tape recordings to MP3, and in the process I found this song that I've been wondering about all this time. The end of the tape comes right as the announcer is about to say what it is. All I can tell you, which I highly doubt will help at all, is that it was #16 on the Mars FM Top 30 for January 4th, 1992. I asked some friends about it at the time, but nobody knew what it was, and Tunatic wasn't able to decipher it, so I forgot about it for a while, but just the other day I remembered it for some strange reason, so now I'm posting it here to Ask MeFi. Can anyone name this early-90s rave anthem?

I'm looking to purchase a new hockey stick. My favorite shaft is the Louisville TPS Tricore 3 but they've been discontinued for a while. Do you know of a stick similar to the Tricore? There are pictures of the Tricore on this site: http://hockey.inlinewarehouse.com/showthread.php?t=10557 As for me, I play forward, 5'7", 150lbs. I take the occasional slap shot but I'm more of a stick handling, dangling, deking, wrist shot type of player. I realize stick choice is a personal preference but I'm really hoping there's something similar to the Tricore out there somewhere.

A real estate/math/tax question. I sold my house for $210,000. The buyers wanted a new roof but wanted that included in the loan so the sale price was changed to $217,000 and the $7000 for the roof was paid out of escrow. When I do my taxes next year do I need the receipt for the roof or do the buyers? I believe that since I technically paid for the roof, the cost of the roof could be used to offset the capital gains on the house. What do you think?

How do I get a loan with no interest? I was thinking that I could buy an item on my credit card and then turn around a sell the item. As long as the credit card was 0% for 12 months then it seems to me that would be a free loan. The only question then would be 'What item could I buy that could be sold for as close to the purchase price as possible?' Also, are there any other ways I could get a no interest loan? I was thinking I could put the money into a brokerage account and earn interest off the money - then pay it back at the end of the year.

I have witnessed road rage and I want to complain about it. How should I go about this? Or should I just leave it? I live in Vaughan, Ontatio (a suburb of Toronto). I witnessed a man get out of his car (I didn't get the plate number but it was a company van with the company address and logo on it) and yell at the other driver, hit his window repeatedly and then opened his door to yank the driver out of his car. Luckily the other driver managed to let go of him and shut his door. Then the aggressor went on to kick his driver side door. It was a traumatic to witness this incident for me. I wonder what the poor driver of the other car must have gone through. All he did was block a lane to get into a lane from the gas station that would make a left turn. The other driver obviously angry that his man blocked the lane (mind you the light ahead was red). So how should I go about this? I have never reported such an incident. Should I call 911?

There is a wire hanging in my yard. It appeared about 2 months ago. I have not had any new services installed in my home. It runs from a telephone/ electric pole at the corner of my property and is draped over my bushes then runs down the alley out back. I have a dog now and worry about him chewing on it. Who do I call to have it removed? I called Comcast (we don't have cable) because they had been doing work in our neighborhood about the time it appeared but it is still there. I looked at the wire up close. It reads commscope F677TSVV Xpress Prep. Any clue what it is for? I have touched it and didn't get shocked- but I worry the dog will eventually notice and find it a fascinating tug of war toy. I am on the verge of cutting it, but don't want to get electrocuted. My boyfriend and I have been fighting/bickering quite a bit the last couple months, but he says he has never loved anyone like he loves me. That being said, we haven't had sex for almost three weeks, and have only messed around twice in the shower. I initiated both of the shower incidents, and I've made my concern about the lack of sex known. He blames it on stress at work and being tired after work and then the gym. But, I can see that he's looked a porn almost every day for the last 10 days. Am I being sensitive by being upset by this? I feel like if he's horny enough to look at porn, why shouldn't he be saving that energy for me? [more inside]

With the invention of eReaders and iPads I thought I would come across more fictional books online that are more interactive. The latest example of this that I read was Corey Doctorow's free PDF of Little Brother, which I loved becuase it hyperlinked to maps, destinations and really brought the neighborhoods and events to life. It also was great for reading at work, since I was viewing a PDF. I also saw this type of merging of fiction and references with our own Mefite Dobbs, who back in the day had a amazing email communication called Victory Shag, which were these weekly emails he would send that were about "his" fictional love life that often times had musical tracks and maps and neighborhood references embedded in the interactions. There must be more options out there. I don't own a eReader or an iPad, but just thought that that I would come across more talented writers that use more interactive oppurtunities. I might be out of the loop though, so suggestions would be much appreciated.
No amount of hydration, sleep, cucumbers, teabags, fancy gels and creams will get rid of the very dark circles under my eyes. Last year I cancelled my American Express card after almost 20 years, just before it expired. It just didn't seem worth the annual fee anymore, and it doesn't contribute to your credit score. I then went out of the country for several months. When I got back, I was greeted by a collections agency (Allied Interstate) who told me I owed American Express several hundred dollars, all of which seem to be late fees accrued on the annual fee. I explained the situation to them, and they suggested I contact Amex, which I just did. More details below, but Amex just told me I had to call the collections agency - how can I get them to talk with one another so I can at least talk with someone at Amex about this? [more inside]
