I am turning 40 this month and the only thing that I have been certain of all my life is my desire to have a child. For a bunch of reasons, mainly poor planning, I have no way to make this dream happen any time soon (financial reasons, no partner, etc.). I'd like to look into freezing my eggs so that a couple of years from now I might still be able to make my dreams come true. Does anyone have experience with this? What is the cost? Is it a complicated procedure? Whatever information you might share would be very much appreciated!

I've been playing with a promising idea for a website for a while, and I feel I'm ready to get things moving. I've got a fairly clear idea of what I want, who would use it, and why it would take off. I'd like to learn more about tripods. Whenever I visit a camera store or a store site, or Manfrotto's site, I'm bewildered, and I'd rather not be. Instead of asking for recommendations based on my criteria (as in previous questions here and here), I'd like to understand tripods (and heads) as a category so that I can figure out for myself what I need for whatever it is I have in mind, whether it's my digital SLR, a MiniDV video camera, or even a small apochromatic refractor or spotting scope. Are there any resources online, or any books, that I can start with?

I just bought a Panasonic TH-50PX77U. Great tv so far. I have digital cable service and wanted to hook up my cable/dvr box (supplied by cable company) to the tv via HDMI. No signal, which I assume means the port is blocked. I heard that cable companies disable a lot of features on their dvrs. So, I had to connect using the standard coaxial cable I used with my old tube tv. Since the digital cable service is coming into the dvr via coaxial, is it still digital going to the tv via coaxial? Do I need a digital coaxial cable? Should I start griping with the cable company to open up HDMI? All help is appreciated.

I think all of the exhibits came alive, but I most vividly remember the Visible Woman.

I just moved to London from California last month and I'm keen to make the most of my time here by hitting as many European cities as possible. Any way to be notified about cheap weekend fares from the UK would be fantastic. Thanks to the hive brain. - Alex

These were apparently some type of multicolored painter's cap sold at Wendy's establishments in the late 80's(possibly 1988ish). There seems to be no trace of their existence online. Phone calls to the Wendy's Customer Service hotline have come back with a "try eBay" response. A few good but ultimately fruitless tries to track one down can be found on the comments to my blog. Thank you so much i really appreciate any and all help!!!!!
All my life I've never felt comfortable singing and it sounds horrible. I don't know much about music but it seems like my voice goes flat and I have a hard time hitting high notes. My husband says it sounds like an alien trying to imitate the singing of earth people. I would like to learn how to be comfortable enough with my singing where I could sing karaoke and possibly Irish folk songs. Right now I am very very far from being able to sing in public. Is it possible to get better starting from being terrible or are singing lessons just for people who already can sing but want to get better? [more inside]
I love risotto. I've tried to cook it a number of times, and always manage to get the creamy texture and flavour that I expect - however, the rice itself doesn't seem to absorb the liquid as much as I would like it to, and ends up being hard/crunchy. I tried a few different recipes+methods and always end up with hard rice. [more inside]

My family owns a small business. We manufacture boxes, which we sell to other industrial clients. We've hired a salesman, but he has no sales experience. (We're okay with that.) We're teaching him about boxes, but we'd like to get him some sort of training in sales. We don't have traditional expectations (we think of the job more as "customer relations"), and aren't going to demand that he meet quotas, but we'd like him to have grounding in the basics. Can you recommend some good books on sales? How about training seminars in the Portland (Oregon) area? Any web sites he should read? Info on how to approach cold calls would be especially helpful. (So far we're just going with the "baptism of fire" approach, which has its pros and cons.)

Looking for a recommendation on a decent vac suitable for cleaning toner-messy laser printers. It seems a regular run-of-the-mill vacuum does not play nice with toner due to the amounts of static charge that builds up when sucking up the toner. Can fry the electronics and all, so I have read. Most seem to run in the $200 ballpark, but then I saw this one for $15. What gives? Okay, it doesn't have all the extra attachments and all, but, jeez.... it's $15. Is this a decent vac, or am I "getting what I pay for"?

Suppose a cost of around $1500--the cheaper the better--including return airfare to Toronto. Note that I like seclusion but I also don't drive so it needs to be someplace close to the necessities.

The graduates had a much higher rate of getting out of the cycle of poverty than the traditional school system. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

I have a web site using Wordpress and I'm trying to figure out a css problem with IE. The first thing I'm doing is creating a seperate IE stylesheet. I've followed all the instructions found in the Wordpress forums but can't seem to get IE to pick up the new stylesheet. (I've already asked this question there but haven't gotten back anything that worked.) Here's what I've added to my header.php *below* the call to the regular style.css: Here's my code: <!--[if IE]> <link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php bloginfo('template_directory'); ?>/style-ie.css" type="text/css" /> <![endif]--> I know that IE is picking up the if-then, because I added a random text string in there and IE showed it. The way I'm testing whether or not IE is getting the style-ie.css sheet is by changing the color of the menu bar from orange (non-IE) to white (IE). I've also tried hardcoding the path to the other css sheet and that didn't help. I'm at my wits end. What am I doing wrong?

Some time last year I read an article—a first person account, I believe—of a griefer in a pre-WoW mmo, possibly UO or EQ2. The griefer described his discovery that a low-level character could drag a train of mobs across the world and through the main town, killing everybody in its path. The griefer, however, playing a low-level character, could not be killed by the higher-level players. Apparently his tactics resulted in major changes to the game-playing mechanics and rules. My normally proficient Google-fu has failed me on this one. Does anybody know what article I am talking about?

MusicvideoFilter: Animated mid to late 80s brazilian(?) music video on MTV, what was it? This has been bugging me for decades. There was a video shown on MTV for a while in the mid-to-late 80's that I'd love to see or hear again. I think the band was Brazilian, or at least latin. The video was animated colored drawings on a black background and did a lot of morphing from one thing to another. Can the hive mind mind put me on the right track?

I have a macro that takes an un-styled document, and tries to put text into the right styles based on what its formatting is. So, I would like to transform a Word document into an un-styled version of itself-- but one that retains ALL of the original formatting (italics, small caps, font size, spacing). What would be the most correct way to do this? I have Word 2003 (which the macro needs) and 2007, as well as Word 2008 for Mac. Also-- HTML doesn't work, as it doesn't retain small caps.

Also being able to reply to the incoming messages is a bonus but not essential.

Hi. The geniuses on here have helped before with a seemingly impossible question. About 10 years ago, I downloaded an African song (I cannot remember what country the artist was from or even what particular "style" it was in) that was called something like "T'wala bimsu". Somehow I lost the song and I would be very gratified to find out the artist's name and the song's true name so that I could buy the CD if it exists somewhere. The song is upbeat with a lyrical hook floating over a percussive "bassline" for lack of a better word. I vaguely remember another song by the artist concerning a yellow bus. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks!!

I am starting a new career in a profession that is in demand, and I am just beginning the interview process. I feel confident in my skills, and I am aware that my resume looks pretty good. I need advice from MeFites who have better job selection and salary negotiation skills than me. [more inside]
I have directv and occasionally they give customers free access to pay channels to tempt us to sign up. I was watching one of the channels, which I think was called Universal, and there was a really funny show that I think was Canadian, about a middle aged guy on his second marriage with two kids from a previous marriage and two little kids, and a really hot 20 something sister. The scene for the show was this: An annual family reunion BBQ to celebrate the wedding anniversary the 60 something grandparents, and preparations for it. The plot, the old man gets drunk and announces that he wants a divorce because his wife is a nag. Very very funny stuff, sibling rivalry, at all levels, awkwark moments between ex and current spouses, some touching moments about the older children being the spawn of inferior breeding, very very funny. I want to stream it, but I don't even know the name of the network, let alone the name of the show. [more inside]

I have an old bose acoustic wave radio serving as my PC speakers. Powered but not connected to the computer the speakers produce a gentle hissing. When plugged in (via a 3.5mm to RCA cable) I hear noisy static -- not pure white noise, far more annoying -- and an intermittent whine that changes pitch depending on what's going on in the computer. For example, if the processor is under greater than 30% load all the noises go away. This does not happen with headphones so I think it is some combination of noise in the computer circuits and the amp built into the radio. My question is how do I make it stop? [more inside]

Assuming cost is not an issue, is there anyway for my wife and daughter to make the trip legally on Sunday? I am looking for practical advice for someone in the NY tri-state area.

My 14 yr old son seems to be developing into a reasonably talented musician...he seems to be able to make music come out of whatever instrument he picks up. He has been messing around with audacity...laying down tracks with multiple instruments using nothing more than a simple mic plugged into a laptop. My musical abilities are negative but I am reasonably technically competent. I would like to custom build a hardware/software solution that would only be used for his music and will really allow him to stretch and experiment. I have built a number of computers and I can make the hardware and software work. I just dont know what pieces I need. [more inside]

I haven't watched The Simpsons regularly since about season 12 or 13, but in those episodes I did happen to catch on TV, I have never seen them directly attack President Bush. I do remember back in the 'golden age' they used to regularly poke fun at Clinton (to name but one example, Clinton playing the sax and Moe telling him to "get back to work"). I'm wondering if regular watchers of The Simpsons can point me to episodes from season 13 onwards where they did directly parody or attack Bush.

I recently saw an article by some docs on Oprah that give recommendations about taking care of your skin at certain ages. It says that in your forties and fifties most people need Renova or retinol. I have mild rosacea and dry fair skin and am 48. Do you think I should see a dermatologist to get a prescription or just use an over the counter product with retinol. I do not want to waste my money on an over the counter product if my 48 year old skin would benefit by the prescription. I have lines and dullish dry skin with a few age spots. Thanks.

Help me help my friend remember the title of a movie. (Or documentary?) It starts out with a voiceover over a dark screen - and the voiceover is interrupted by someone saying that voiceovers are lame (or something) and they should cut it out. And the voiceover-over-dark-screen ends. The movie (or documentary?) then progresses in a similar manner, being "edited" in that way, as they go along. Some well-known actors or director was involved. Also, it may have been filmed by a cast or crew member the same time they were filming some big-budget movie. Er, and that's about all I know.
