My plans for new years eve might be falling through due to flaky friends. Where can a single lady go in Seattle to have a fun (and not too crazy) new years eve celebration?
Who should I go through to buy a domain name? New to this part of internet-dom. (Both using MetaFilter and owning digital real estate) My plan is to have a domain name where I can post my as-yet-nonexistant blog as well as build my own personal brand. Are there any suggestions for a newbie as to who I should go through to buy the domain? A friend has offered me hosting space, but any advice on that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!
I baked a potato (skin rubbed with olive oil and kosher salt before cooking), and stupidly left it in a cold oven for a few days. Looks ok (kind of shriveled, but not bad). Is it safe to reheat and eat?

I lucked into a half of a side of some beautiful pasture raised, grass fed, organic beef from a local farmer for cheap! The good news is that we ended up getting this killer beef for less than $2 a pound and that it all fits in our chest freezer. The bad news is ... well... I've realized we don't really actually eat all that much beef. What are some interesting things to do with ground beef and potroast? [more inside]

How can I translate thousands of files written in an old Macintosh word processing program called WriteNow, into a format that is easily accessible, probably Microsoft Word or RTF? It's a problem. I'm a writer and I used WriteNow exclusively for about 15 years. Now it is unsupported and an orphan. A translator program I used to use, MacLink Plus, no longer works on the current Lion operation system for Macintosh. Here's a link that describes WriteNow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WriteNow

"It hadn't been raining all morning, but drops began to fall at lunchtime."- is the bolded clause grammatically correct? Is there ever a case where it could be properly used in a sentence? If the person wants to say that there hadn't been any rain that morning, wouldn't he say "It hadn't rained all morning, but drops began to fall at lunchtime"? On the other hand, if the person is trying to say that it had rained that morning, but not non-stop the entire morning, how would he say it? He still wouldn't say "It hadn't been raining all morning,..." would he? Or would it be correct in that case?
I've committed to barbecuing an 11-pound bone-in prime rib tonight. Should I cut it up into individual steaks or grill it as one giant roast? My grill is a hybrid gas and charcoal, if it matters. Any advice is helpful; I've never done anything this big. The diners' preference is for medium well and dinner will be in about seven hours.

I've been working with a group of 2 other senior engineers for several years. We each have about ten years experience doing web development, mainly doing high volume e-commerce sites. Our work is client services based, companies come to our company to build sites out. We'd like to do this for ourselves. Our question is very basic, what our options for bidding work or getting clients? Do recruiters ever have projects they give out to bid? Bonus: the other two engineers are female, so we'd qualify for any contracts that give weight to women owned businesses. [more inside]

My computer was just infected with the JS/blacoleRef.Q trojan. Microsoft Security Essentials was able to flag and quarantine the infection and allow me to download and install the latest malware definitions, (mpam-fe.exe), disconnect from the web and do a full system scan. Another computer was used to go online and research JS/blacoleRef.Q. This trojan was described as not being removable by (most?) anti virus programs. The registry changes that were expected from this infection were not present. A change in a quarantined Firefox file located in my Application Data file had been removed. This system was infected when I clicked on a photograph while doing a Google Image search for plumbing fittings. How can I find if this trojan is still present and active in my system? How, if it is still active in the system, can it be removed? I am very uncomfortable about making changes in my registry. I am also uncomfortable with making random selections of malware removal tools on the web. Help!

My girlfriend drinks very little alcohol, but eventually she will drink a glass of champagne and maybe a beer today. We are having a private new Years party for the both of us and I want to do a little drinking game just for fun, maybe 30 min with shot glasses of beer. So does anybody know a fun little game? It should not be something kinky, or like "drink or tell". All the drinking games I know are quite hardcore and not suited well for this occasion. It may include some acrobatics, like running around a table or some such as we will have no bystanders. Thanks! (Our New Year's eve is in 6h, she comes home in 4, so hurry up)
I am currently (still) using a CRT monitor and would like to move to an LCD panel. My primary usage is for photography and web browsing. I have spent the last three weeks or so researching monitors and have found out that (1) I will need to buy an IPS panel, (2) having looked at monitor sizes in the store I really would prefer a 27 or 30 inch monitor and (2) I have resigned myself to the fact that I should expect to pay at least $1,000 for a good monitor, possibly closer to $2,000. What monitor would you recommend? Is it really worth upgrading to a really high-end monitor ($2,000+)? More questions and details inside. [more inside]

Does your profession or hobby have a pithy saying that encapsulates the work or its ethics? For example, "Make no little plans" (Daniel Burnham) resonates with city planners. Perhaps "First do no harm" (or Primum non nocere) might be an example related to physicians and other health care workers... or is it just outsiders who think so? What about "Serve and protect" for law enforcement? The quotes can be funny, ironic or sincere... it doesn't matter so long as they are short (think something that could be engraved on a charm) and people in the profession recognize the phrase as somehow emblematic of their work. Thanks in advance!

Hello, hive mind. I have a dear friend who recently left an abusive marriage. Although she's working two jobs, she barely makes ends meet and may need EFT/SNAP and housing assistance. I've pulled together resources from the official website of the CT Dept. of Social Services, but cannot seem to find local, low-cost counseling services. Southern CT State University used to offer clinical counseling as part of their graduate program for the public, but I cannot find it. Any resources for low-cost counseling would be great. In a small city in Illinois, last night we saw a hearse in the driveway of a neighbor down the block. No other cars, police, or activity were in evidence. We know this person is elderly, but we don't actually know her. Because I've seen a cab come to her house, I believe she doesn't drive, and I have seen a second, somewhat less elderly person come by and do yard work for her occasionally. This second person's car wasn't there last night either. We don't actually see our neighbor very often, especially in winter, so if she's still there, we might not see her in passing for a while. I was under the impression that if someone had died at their home, an ambulance would transport them; I don't think I've ever seen a hearse at a private home before. Was this the end for my neighbor, or did her hypothetical niece the hypothetical mortician pop in for supper in a company car or something? Anyone have any knowledge about hearse customs?

“one of the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it”
I'm getting the following message: “one of the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it” I post the message not because it is informative about the problem but because it's the recurring symptom. It occurs sometimes when I plug in a device, but even more often on devices that have been connected for some time. If I ignore it, the device might even start working again. (Most annoying are the message that tell me I have to reformat the device as I am afraid the cat will walk by and click on OK and wipe out my data.) The most "interesting" analysis online suggested that some kind of timeout for a device that hasn't been used in "a while" tells the system to "renew" which fails and results in the message. This may even be true, but who knows? [more inside]

My work computer just upgraded to Firefox 8 (which I've had at home for a while and that's been fine) and I can't figure out how to do this one thing it did in old Firefox. So in whatever version I was using previously, I could click on a tiny downward-pointing arrow on a tab (or right near a tab, I don't remember, or maybe right near the back button) and get to that tab's recent history, so I could go back to recent searches or whatever else (the regular Recent History doesn't work for this, as I have multiple tabs open at a time, and the titles appear the same on my internal database). How do I bring this magic arrow back to new Firefox? I really need to be able to view a specific tab's recent history.

Canadian-filter: I'm a petite American woman, of French Canadian extraction by some small percentage. The last few times I went to French Canada, especially Quebec, I saw several women of exactly my size and shape (5'3," roughly 105 lbs.) Thus encouraged I found and purchased a lovely xs leather jacket--something I'd been looking for in the States for several years--without much effort! (I've also purchased Canadian shoes and boots several times, and have noted that unlike their American counterparts [and despite similar climactic conditions in much of the States], they are often lined--and not just with little wisps of rayon!) A similarly longstanding quest is purchasing flannel long-sleeved pajamas, or other kinds of sleepwear meant to keep one warm, but still be, you know, faintly cute. Although they do occasionally turn up in xs here (I have an oversized pair from Land's End; Gap has been advertising a pair recently in petite extra small), they inevitably swim on me, and the Gap pair are made out of embarrassingly thin flannel. Where could I mail order pajamas that fit from Canada? For that matter, where could I mail order petite small/xs/size 0 clothing from Canada in general? [more inside]
On Christmas eve I discovered that my (US) passport expired last month yet I had a trip to Canada planned two days later (no time to renew). Well, I am in Canada (no trouble crossing the border). Now do I have to spend my next few days renewing the passport so I can get home? I guess I'm wondering how much leeway border agents have. I have the passport, my birth certificate and driver's license.

Once I reboot it, however, I can manage a decent 4.0 Mbps. I've bypassed the router, tried different computers, and the issue persists. How can I (or anyone) stop my friend's mother-in-law from sneaking alcohol to my friend's infant daughter? Alice and Bill have a baby, Clarice. Alice and Bill used to drink heavily, until they had Clarice, who is now about a year and a half old. Bill's parents, Dave and Edna, guzzle wine all day long. Alice hates this, and prevents it when she's around, but she can't be in the room with them every single second. Just this evening, I was holding Clarice when Alice stepped out of the room, and had an awkward stand-off with Edna because I wouldn't let Clarice do it. What should I do with my hair? White, male, 32. Hair is dirty blonde and wavy but not quite curly. I've never had good luck getting it cut, so I've always gone back and forth between shaving bald and just letting it grow. It's been growing for most of the year and looks like a fro, with the back almost to the shoulder. That was great in my 20's but I'd like something more professional and consistent. As is, it's all messed up and lopsided by lunchtime. [more inside]
Why is off-ball movement such a difficult basketball skill? The more I watch college, and even NBA, basketball and focus on offensive plays rather than just the person with the ball, the more I realize that most of the guys on the court are not moving, and it results in stagnant offenses. So why is off-ball movement such a difficult skill to develop? I would think that, at least in set plays, coaches would script out the off-ball movement for not just the key players (like the person who is going to make the backdoor cut) but for the rest of the team as well. Yet with rare exceptions, you only see one or two players moving at a time. Why?

Long ago (late 80s? early to mid 90s?) my sister had a videocasette tape of something that was presumably recorded from Showtime or HBO. It seemed to be a "special" of some sort that involved a guy in a very stage-like unrealistic bedroom interacting with large monster-like puppets and singing strange comical songs. I think at some point he also swung on a vine from one area of the room to the other. There were a lot of musical segments. I think at one point he was dressed up in a safari outfit, but I'm not certain. I know I haven't provided a lot of details here, but maybe you know what I'm talking about?

The name is what I'm most interested in RE 1, and the reasoning for 2!

I sometimes hear about someone winning a prize where somehow the taxes due are somehow offset by the giver of the prize. How is that offset calculated? Do they just add money to the prize until the post tax amount would be the same as the intended prize (so say 10% tax on $5,000 prize they end up giving $5,555.56. This involves the additional being taxed iteratively since it is all income to you. Or do they somehow just pay the government the money you would owe on the intended prize amount and the offset doesn't count as income. So for 10% on $5,000 they'd just pay $500. Or a mystery third option?

As serious as global warming is, and as close as we've come to the point of no return, I find it incredible that there isn't at least a moderate-scale boycott against the oil companies that are behind the public misinformation campaign and lobbying against legislation. And if not a boycott, at least some sort of active protests. Am I just looking in the wrong places? Wouldn't a boycott of say ExxonMobil (from what I've read one of the largest supporter of the denialist machine) by a few tens of thousands have an impact? Or is their revenue just too big?
Is there something like Gilt Taste that is based in Australia? I'm especially keen on their artisanal sweets and chocolates and cakes.
Recently, I said some harsh things to an ex whom until recently I had remained very good friends with. These things had been boiling inside me for months and I had to say them at this point. However, ever since I said them, she has disappeared from her online profiles (which she updated multiple times every day), I have no way of contacting her, and I'm worried. Obviously there's a lot going on, and some of it may be serious. [more inside]

There's a few recipes out there but what are the awesome ones? I'm prepared to try a confit but I know that the amount of oil/fat wouldn't go down too well with other people. Long, slow, cooking is more than okay.

Anyone have experience switching from a smartphone to a feature phone? My current phone is a Blackberry. (Its Blackberry-ness isn't the issue.) I pay AT&T $90 month. I bought an iPad 6 months ago and my use of the phone has dropped precipitously. I initiate one or two voice calls per week and just a few texts. I never user it to browse the web. I do use it to check mail but I never respond to or initiate email on it. I travel with the iPad, so that relegates the phone to the bench on those occasions, too. In other words, I have much more phone than I need and I'm paying ATT $90 each month for services I barely use. So, I'm thinking about terminating the contract and going pay-as-you-go with a cheaper phone. Has anyone done the same thing for the same reasons? How did it work out? Did you regret it?

Back in the early days of my Internet forays (1996? 1997?) I subscribed to an odd mailing list whose messages were pseudo-autobiographical posts by a small circle of friends. They formed an ongoing narrative, I believe one was named "Alex," and it continued for at least a couple of years. By the time blogs hit the scene it had slowly faded away, and I can't for the life of me find any of the archives I thought I'd saved. Under the instruction of a personal trainer I strained my rotator cuff. A couple family members said that one of the reasons of having a personal trainer is avoiding this kind of thing and that I should find a different one. I'd never worked out or used equipment in a gym. The personal trainer was aware of that. He had me doing dips on a piece of equipment that kept my legs up and in front of me. I was definitely straining, he was pushing me to keep going and then my muscles gave out and I dropped. It didn't hurt right away, it was several hours later that the pain came so we continued the regimen. This was my third session, second working upper body. Should I get a different personal trainer or is this just something that happens and can be brushed off?

I've heard bipolar meds can effect peoples's creativity, has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything I can do about it short of coming off the meds (which I definitely don't want to do)?

What is the most effective way for a woman to respond to street harassment by men? Obviously if I feel unsafe, I run like hell. But often it happens in public places where I'm easily able to stop, turn around and say something to the perpetrator. I realise these may be contradictory goals, and I would like to better understand what goes on in the minds of men who harass women on the street. Often I want to go from Southampton UK to Islington. The public transportation system in London is awesome! There must be a better way than the white-knuckle drive through the city I currently do... Given that I want to do the first leg of the trip via car, I expect there is somewhere in SW London I can park and take public transportation, and get to Islington relatively quickly (~1 hour) and cheaply. I've played around with Google maps, and there are a bajillion options.... anyone know one that is near optimal? Ideally with free/cheap parking, and outside the congestion fee zone.

Gmail and Word Question: just recently, perhaps since the new look Gmail, sometimes when I compose a long email in Word, then copy and paste the text into an email reply, it looks fine, then I hit Send, and it ends up being sent without the proper line breaks. Specifically, the blank line between paragraphs (two paragraph marks from Word) become just one new line, and the email looks like a huge wall of text. There didn't seem to be any way for me to know that this would happen, as it looked fine when pasted into the reply box before I hit send. Also, if I compose a new message and post the text, it seems to go through fine; this only happens with reply. Is there an easy fix that I can do every time to stop this from happening? Can anyone explain this? Thanks.
