Any tips for getting grout residue off of hardwood floors? Some previous owners of my house had carpeting in the living room, and tiles that they placed around the fireplace hearth (tiles were 1/4" thick and brick-like, in case anyone cares). I removed the carpet and the tiles to reveal the hardwood floors underneath, which is in fairly good shape in most areas. Except right around the fireplace where some white residue remains from where the tiles were. Is there anyway to reduce or remove this completely other than refinishing? Or should I just put an area rug over it until that time comes? [more inside]

I'm looking for more of a karaoke box setup where participants are able to enter a number on a remote to add a song to the queue or to use a laptop to remotely add songs, rather than a bar-style KJ setup that needs maintenance. I have 7 very ripe hachiya persimmons in my freezer, frozen solid. They were READY TO EAT! when I got them (all delicious and snotty), but had to go out of town for the holidays and didn't know what else to do with them. Now I'm back and at a loss as to how to proceed. Can I thaw them? Will they shatter my blender as-is? I've made ice cream with persimmons before, but am still fairly new to this glorious fruit, so all suggestions are welcome.

Dystopic Mental Reprogramming Filter?: When I was about 10 years old (1987) in Los Angeles, my mother sent me to some kind of "therapy" which involved me laying in a small, completely dark room, on strange tables (one rotated, one moved in sort of elliptical motions, I think one clanged back and forth--I was on one kind of table during each visit), with one ear plug in, and listening to discordant sounds like clanging scraping silverware. I don't know how long this went on, but I think it was over the course of some months. [more inside]

My LLC is going legit January 1st in Michigan. I'm a brand new business owner in an economically depressed state and I'm starting to turn a profit which means dealing with taxes and the IRS. I found and immediately lost a link the other day that talked about a device that made mp3s sound richer, deeper, perhaps like vinyl (or at least not as compressed as they truly are). It was a rather simple device and the article talked about one brand as low as $150. I don't expect anyone to find the exact page especially as I am not being too descriptive. It was on an audiophile site and was recommended...not one of those 'buy this cheapie/crap product that screws up your music' sort of thing. If anyone knows what I am talking about or has something else that they know that works for improving mp3 sound through stereo, I'm interested. Pardon me for the nebulous post. It is the best my brain can recall. Thanks for your techie/audiophile input.

Cheesy, early 80's flick set either in the present or near future where punks (outrageous makeup and outfits) played some sort of videogame tournament on platforms, in a darkly lit arcade w/ huge joysticks sticking upward from the floor. It wasn't a straight comedy as I think there was dire consequences for losing. Death or something. I think I remember somebody losing and trying to escape their fate by running away into a nearby room w/ a girl while the crowd freaked out. I can't remember a single actor from the film but I think I might have seen it on USA's "Night Flight". I know I don't have much to go on but would love any/all help to figure this out. I've searched and searched but come up empty. Thank you!

To be a little more specific, I am a college student who doesn't have a ton of money to spend, but I'd like to get the largest bang possible for my buck as far as clothes go. The sort of stuff I'm looking for fits somewhere on the spectrum between what Urban Outfitters has to offer, and what Tom Waits wears - if that makes any sense. Hi friends. Planning a RTW trip with no time limit. I have a good amount of funds set aside, but I'd really like to settle somewhere in SE Asia (prefer Thailand or Vietnam) for at least 3-6 months and survive on about $10-$15 per day. Is it possible for an American to find decent (i.e. not too dangerous or dirty) accommodation and eat at that price? I'm not including any party dollars (alcohol, night life etc) in that amount...just the basics to survive. Would prefer to live near a city, or at least a small town...just not too far into the country side. Also, I will be splitting the expenses with a friend. We are having some visiting Serbian friends over for a late (by our standards) Christmas meal in a few days. They will literally be on the other side of the world in New Zealand at this time. I'd like to play some Serbian Christmas music that they would enjoy, music that says "Christmas" to them, especially so far from home. I understand that the actual Serbian Christmas is not until January 7th, but I'd like to play music that lets them know we have gone to some trouble to help them enjoy Christmas. Any recommendations, especially those accessible via iTunes or YouTube, would be most welcome.

Identify a science fiction/fantasy novel from the 1980s, possibly YA, where they lived in the trees and where talk of killing others was taboo?
Can you identify this book? I read it in the mid-1980s. It may or may not have been a YA (Young Adult) title. The protagonist was a young girl, and her society lived peacefully up in the trees. She was interested in seeing the world down on the surface. There may have been another society down there. At one point she lost her temper with someone (a pet?) and blurted out something like "I would like to dead you!" at which her family was shocked and horrified at her violent thoughts. I particularly remember being struck by that part, that she understood the concept of killing but didn't know the verb. [more inside]

Finding a new wolfpack(s) -- Looking for advice on finding mentors, professional, exercise or party friends
I'd prefer to not be a one-man wolfpack, but I am rather introverted and take some time to get close to people. Due to friends' babies/marriage/moving for jobs I've found I'm in my 30's now and am looking for a new group of friends to run with. My best friend (also my last close adventurous homie) has been ensnared by a female. And she's ready to breed. So after I fulfill my Best Man duties, I probably won't be seeing him too much anymore and am looking for advice on how to find new friends in four areas: exercise, professional, party or mentors. (Detail and more questions below!) Useful feedback is welcome with open heart and ears; mocking my parenting decisions just means you want Karma to kick your ass too. [more inside]

How can I find a way to get along with my family again? When I'm around my family for big family occasions like Christmas, everyone seems to fall into long-ago-established patterns of behaviour in which I'm treated like an awkward/over-sensitive/"difficult" twelve-year-old. Anything I do seems to reinforce that impression, and (although I try hard to prevent it) I'm pretty sure that the more they see me that way, the less calm and less inclined to make nice about everything I become, making the whole thing worse. NameThatRecentObscureMovie: At some point in the film, a young girl (the protagonist) dressed in a nightgown has a nightmare where Nazi bears chase her through snowy woods. A Nutcracker toy alerts her family that she needs help. She defeats the bears by throwing a glass angel figurine at the leader, which stabs him. Then, an owl-man appears and takes her to a magical ballroom where couples are dressed as birds dancing ballet-ish-ly. I think it's set during WWII, her father is serving in the war and comes home at the end of the movie. Saw a snippet on TV in a restaurant, did I dream this?

My elderly 84 year old mother-in-law did not get my husband or I a Christmas present this year. She did get the only other person she has contact with, a lady that comes in once a week to clean for her, a Christmas present this week. Last year she did not get her son (my husband) a present (she asked him what he wanted and he told her to take care of herself would be gift enough) but she did get me one. Please understand it is not getting a gift that has crushed me, but "it's the thought that counts" is what is painful to me. I do everything for her - pay bills, laundry, fill weekly medicine box, take her to doctor appointments, do grocery shopping, pick-up medicine, help with her bath, I even take her dog to the vet. When I went down this Christmas morning and gave her a Christmas gift she said "Why did you do this?" and of course I said because it is Christmas (my husband and I have been married for 15 years and the tradition has always been the same!). She did not say a word about a gift for us. My husband apologized for her when I told him, but how can I put this in perspective and not take it personal? (Why did she get her cleaning lady a gift?)

My brother works at a record/DVD chain in Louisville. My laptop (Acer Aspire 3810T) fell about 2 feet onto a carpeted floor. It was closed, but now I have a black smudge on the bottom right corner of the screen (by the way, the smudge disappeared after a few minutes, but has now reappeared and is not going away). It is annoying but I can still work with it since it is not completely opaque. After extensive googling and chatting with Acer support, I think the LCD may have ruptured. However, can I continue using the laptop or is the display going to get progressively worse and die soon? Although it is still within the warranty period, I think I may have to pay for repairs (since the techs may figure out that it was dropped). Thank you in advance.

Husband and I were at a Farmer's Market for breakfast today, and thought we noticed an older man taking photos of children as they passed by. In the hustle and bustle of December 24th no one else seems to have caught it, and we felt kind of sick about the situation - there's no way of knowing the full details of why someone is taking pictures. But we notified a security guard, who said he'd keep an eye on it. The question is, in these kinds of scenarios is it always better to tell someone and risk making some innocent person's life miserable? We're a bit shaken up about it. [more inside]

How to get the best conversion rate (GB Pound to US Dollar)? I've been working in London for the past year, trying to save up money for grad school when I return to the states. I was told that December was the best month of the year to do a GBP to USD conversion (not too sure how accurate that is). I bank with Barclays (England) and Chase (US) and am in the states at the moment. I've brought the money (in GBP) over because I thought it would give me more conversion options. I know that it can get complicated with conversion rates changing, various banks with their own exchange rates, etc. I'm willing to open an online bank account if that's the best option to transfer pounds to dollars. Are there any conversion geniuses out there who can help give me any tips? Many thanks! D

The only hitch is that the device still thinks it's a phone with phone app icon. And when connected to iTunes it shows my wife's phone number. I think this is only an aesthetic issue. Doesn't bother me that our niece knows her aunt's phone number. Are there any other issues to consider? Will a SIM card be needed for future updates? Should I attempt jail breaking? It's running the latest iOS, for better or worse.

I feel like a basket case. I'm 47 years old, and I've been in a 20-year same-sex relationship with another man. I felt like it would last forever. For several years, the relationship was sexless; we did all the normal couples things together - cooked, ate, washed dishes, stressed about the bills, laughed, cried, and took care of each other, but there wasn't much physical attraction any more. I've always been somewhat bisexual, and 2 or 3 years ago, I met a woman on match.com who was cute, seemed nice, and was accepting of my situation. We started dating (with the knowledge, and as far as he acted, the acceptance of my partner). At first, the two of them were sort of circling and sniffing, and I was afraid they would hate each other. As time passed, they became really good friends, and eventually they slept together, which was fine with me. (lots more blathering inside) [more inside]

We are traveling to India this January and are seeking some advice on where to go to get away from the big cities for a day or two. We have tickets for an arrival and Delhi and a departure from Mumbai and will have a total of 11 days in country. So far we have plans to explore Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. Where can I find a rechargeable flashlight that plugs directly into the wall socket without a separate adapter? My father had a flashlight that he loved for gardening and for power outages. It was a normal flashlight that plugged directly into the wall, so he didn't have to worry about cords. The charge lasted more than an hour. Now that that's broken, I'd love to find a suitable replacement for him. Any ideas?

Help me plan a 3-day trip to Joshua Tree (CA). Or alternatively, suggest another really cool natural area to check out in Southern California in late January. I am in my cousin's wedding in the L.A. area and am coming with my girlfriend. We decided to take a few extra days--she's never been to California and I've only ever kept my visits to family time, usually in the OC area. We're renting a car, so we'll have transportation. Is late January a good time to go? Do you have any recommendations for gear rental (doubt I'll be able to climb, unfortunately)? I have gear at home in Michigan, but I'd like to travel light. If you have alternative suggestions--they can be around L.A.--I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

LongshotFilter + RecommendationFilter: I'm looking for two specific 1000+ piece jigsaw puzzles from my childhood. Descriptions are inside, but since finding them seems unlikely, I'm also looking for recommendations for similar large, difficult puzzles. My tastes in jigsaws run to muted color palettes; I'm trying to branch out from replicas of famous paintings and generic landscapes (although particularly striking architecture is fair game); I prefer photorealism or intricate geometrical or abstract designs, rather than the "giant collection of loosely related objects which is difficult mostly because it's so visually busy" school of puzzles (so, like this, but not this); I'm unlikely to be interested in things smaller than 1000 pieces. I'd prefer specific recommendations if you've got 'em, but links to general suppliers are ok too. [more inside]
