I'd buy shorts before the trip, but here (Thailand) there are 2 choices: 1) Too much polyester, or 2) 100% Cotton and expensive. Both have poor construction quality. Seeking mid-range quality and price, 100% cotton. Far enough out of fashion that teens or 20-somethings wouldn't wear, but it's what their dads wear. Seeking store names. Bonus points for easy access by public transportation and proximity to the CBD. Just to be clear, I need outerwear, not underwear.
Can you recommend a good book about Simone Weil, possibly also about her brother Andre? [more inside]
Flat Earthers fascinate me. Mostly because it's such a pure conspiracy theory; it's good to see someone standing up to Big Sphere. What kind of experiment could I carry out for an open-minded Flat Earther that would demonstrate the Earth isn't a disk? There's the old "ship disappearing beyond the horizon" thing, but that's something you rarely (if ever) see with your naked eye. Presume that I'm willing to throw a little but of money into this. Planning to make Thai curry paste this weekend, but my partner came home with shrimp sauce instead of shrimp paste. Is it an acceptable substitute? [more inside]
Essentially 1) Do I need to know technical details of creative writing? 2) Am I disadvantaged because I don't have an MFA? 3) How do I work in relative isolation? 4) Are online writing courses useful? [more inside]
I'm picking up a Wii U, and want an external HDD to go with it. Portable hard drives need a USB Y-cable to draw power from two of the Wii U's USB ports at the same time, and some people say they have stability issues / drives die from constantly powering the console on and off. But could I run the Y cable to a wall outlet (eg a 5A phone charger) instead, running the data part of the cable to the Wii U? That way the drive would stay powered when the Wii U shuts down.
Last night it seemed I lost control of my cursor. As i tried to click it off it became obvious I’d been hijacked. I have disconnected from the net and don’t know what do do now. [more inside]
Help me figure out how to draw boundaries with a friend who is also a customer at a business I help manage. [more inside]
I know this may make me sound entitled but tell me if I’m over reacting or thinking out of place regarding work environment. I’ve worked at tech companies for most of my career. My last companies had pretty good facilities and would often have snacks and coffee at a minimum. Most of them would buy us lunch at least once a week. From what I read about other tech companies, this seems like the norm. [more inside]

Are these ducks escaped domestic ducks of some kind, or are they a weird species of wild duck that I'm unfamiliar with? [more inside]
My esteemed mother-in-law is headed down to Clearwater Beach, Florida from late January to the end of February to avoid the Massachusetts winter and would really like to find some activities to occupy herself while there. Anyone know of any good beginner art classes, nature classes, short-term volunteer opportunities in food banks or the like, anything else that could help her feel like she was using her time well?
What’s the best Scrabble app for iPhones? Ideally ad-free, but minor ads would be okay. [more inside]

When I Google my name, there's a link right on the first page to an activity in my past that I wish would be forgotten forever. Short of asking Google to remove the page from its results, what can I do to bury the news to page 90 of the search engine? [more inside]
What do you recommend for creation of HTML emails - newsletters for example? Not something that's too constrained by preset templates (e.g. MailChimp), but something that still helps you create responsive emails that will work in most clients. I've got Dreamweaver but I don't really feel confident in using it. Windows preferred.
I'm always curious, when I take the Chicago Metra, who takes it one or two stops -- from Union Station to Western Avenue, which is like 3 miles and there are cheaper buses. Or a little farther -- but there are still cheaper buses, and CTA train options. Have you done this, or do you know who does? I'm sure there must be a million reasons -- I'd like to know a few! Non-Chicago commuter rail answers okay, more deets within. [more inside]
I have a set of tasks I absolutely need to do that are very challenging, will take a lot of time, and that I dislike working on a whole hell of a lot. (Think something along the lines of writing a thesis on a subject you dislike intensely.) I'm really struggling with finding the motivation to even get started, and time is running out. How can I force myself to grind my way through it? [more inside]
Last week I broke up with my best friend largely due to his response to sexual harassment allegations. I'm still reeling from my decision and don't know what to think. [more inside]
My apartment is an old warehouse that had walls constructed to divide it into units. I have two holes in the walls that look like this. [more inside]
What is your alternative to the dreaded Chair - you know, where you put all the stuff you will wear again but don't have the energy to re-drawer/re-hang? [more inside]
Years ago, I read an account (presented as true, I think) about a group of drama students who went to a class on this date in 1963 and were immediately told of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. They decided that this must be an exercise in improvisation and began acting out the grief and shock they would feel if such an event occurred, not realising that it had actually happened. I can't remember where I read this, and Googling it just brings up general stuff about the assassination. Does it ring a bell for anyone?
We are using an old CMS (soon to be retired) and something very odd is happening that I can’t get my head around. [more inside]
I'm putting together the sound effects for a play and the script calls for the following to be heard on the radio. I believe it is taken from a real news broadcast and there's lots of recordings of them on archive.org, YouTube etc. but I can't find the one with this specific section. [more inside]
I'd like to do some comparisons of abridged and unabridged books. Can you suggest some books that have abridged and unabridged versions that are both available as ebooks? I'm open to all genres/periods/etc, but I have a preference for books that would appear on a list of classic or must-read books.
I have made an idle hobby out of photographing open cellar doors in New York City. What neighborhood in New York and at what time could I go to get the most bang for my buck? [more inside]
I'm wondering about the acceptability and frequency of hand-kissing by strangers. I was recently at a friend's casual gathering and was introduced to several persons, and kissed on the hand by one of them, as a farewell. Is this a popular or trendy thing to do these days, or was just a strange episode? The kisser in question is Western European, so perhaps it is more common there? (Although he didn't kiss anyone else, which is why it struck me as a bit odd). [more inside]
My 10 year old and I have been taking turns hiding one of those incredibly annoying screaming rubber chickens (yes, like the one Adam Savage used for his Ultimate Duck Army) to try to surprise and scare/annoy each other. So far he has gotten me MUCH worse than I have gotten him. I need to up the ante and come up with some creative new ways to annoy him with it. The more ridiculous, unexpected, Wile E. Coyote-esque, and over the top, the better.
Looking for an affordable hairstylist in Philly who can shave an undercut and cut mixed hair. [more inside]
I need to crowdfund some airplane tickets to visit my dying grandma. :( She is in Toronto. I'm in the UK. I'd like to crowdfund using a site that would get the money easily to a UK bank account, and would let people from the US, Canada and the UK contribute. It would also be nice if I can take it down afterwards for privacy. I want a reputable and well known site that will reliably send the money. Thoughts?
Are there any sub $60 luggage trackers that are worthwhile? Have you, or someone you know, had luggage lost by an airline that was then found via the gizmo? This is for maybe twice yearly travel, so a yearly access fee would not be viable.
My five year old has some mild sensory issues (mostly aural) and is on the autism spectrum (high functioning / mostly social behavior related issues). His school class has a trip to the movies later today to see Coco, and I'm checking if anyone can confirm how loud it is / how scary it is relative to that age group. [more inside]
We ordered Blue Apron (through one of those 100% free week offers!) for the first time. The food came late, they are crediting the account so we get a free box next time, and I need some help to determine if I can still safely eat some/all of the contents of the box. [more inside]
I inherited a 1960s steel Army footlocker from a relative, but no one has a key. What is the best way to hire a locksmith in the Brooklyn area who could help? [more inside]
Two weeks ago, my mother bought two pints of oysters at Costco. They look just like this. The "Sell By" date is today, and we're planning to cook them in a casserole for Thanksgiving dinner (tomorrow). I'm not worried about being one day past the "Sell" date, but I am worried that she bought them two weeks ago! They've been refrigerated the whole time, and the containers are sealed. The plastic lids are very slightly convex, though. Should I toss them out, or are they safe to cook and eat? Thanks for informed advice!
Yesterday, when my wife picked up our 6 year old son from his after school program, he was crying and shaken up because the supervisor of the program had angrily grabbed him by the arm and scared him. He had been playing with a toy that he had received in the previous period as an academic reward from his teacher. The supervisor informed my wife that they'd been having problems with our son playing with toys in the program, which is not allowed, though this is the first we've heard of it. [more inside]
What are subscription boxes that are under $30 and preferrably under $20 a month that you find are worth it even at that price as gifts? [more inside]
My middle school kid is a keyboard player and loves it. He's been playing for years and is in our city's local version of "The School of Rock" where young musically-talented people get put together in bands and practice/perform regularly. The problem is that he's in a band of mostly metal and heavy rock-influenced kids, and though they've been receptive to what he's been interested in playing (they did kickass Joy Division and Jesus & Mary Chain covers last time), he's interested in trying to find harder, more rock oriented or upbeat stuff to try with them. [more inside]
I run a three-month program that kicks off with a new group once a month, and it involves a lot of moving pieces, including scheduling meetings (that I can't schedule until the new folks have started), and sending instructional emails at a certain time for each cohort. [more inside]
I have spent years looking for a good, buy once, wallet. They are generally too small (Credit cards don't fit) or the leather is shoddy and falls apart. I will pay top dollar for a really great leather wallet. Suggestions please.
Anyone know of any? I know it's a long shot but this is something I'd like to try. Doesn't have to be the whole week. Needs to accommodate beginners. Prefer something heavy on silent meditation. Thanks!
My workplace is absolutely awash with people who are constantly jockeying for position. I am in the really fortunate position of having now been promoted to the job I want at the level I want to stay at for the rest of my career. So how can I be one of the people who manage to put their egos aside and quit playing these games? [more inside]

Please help me bleach a part of a website! I'm looking for sci fi short story compilation recommendations. I've read Wandering Earth by Liu Cixin, which I really enjoyed for it's engaging read and what felt like fresh topics to me. Are there others that folks would recommend? Hoping to curl up with a book this Thanksgiving.

My oldest sister (B) and I are hung up on what to get as a holiday gift for our middle sister (C). The fact is, C has been so distant from B and me for so long that neither of us know her very well. But since our parents died, C has been at least trying to stay connected with us and that's a huge improvement that we want to nurture. [more inside]
Apologies for the lamest question of the day, but is it possible to see who has liked or forwarded a tweet? I know you can see how many people have liked it. Hovering over or clicking the likes doesn't show who liked it, though. Is there a to see who liked or forwarded a tweet? [more inside]

I'm planning to buy a new printer/scanner soon. I'd like to keep it under $100. I print mostly text documents (plus the occasional picture), and want something that will do auto double-sided printing. Oh, and NOT HP. When I look around online, most say they are wireless. I have a desktop computer and no WiFi. Can these wireless printers be attached to a computer the old fashioned way? Any recommendations for what to buy and/or what to avoid would be greatly appreciated.
I have an old computer not connected to the internet (Mac OSX 10.6.8) (not my main computer) with some old audio files (Audacity 1.3.14-beta) archived on it. I would like to hear some suggestions for the easiest way to share these audio files online. [more inside]

I just bought a new flat and I can't get the combi boiler (hot water / central heating) to start up. It turns on, and although it is old I have no reason to believe it shouldn't work. I don't want to look like an idiot calling out a plumber for something stupid I don't understand. Details and photos inside. [more inside]
I started reading "Secondhand Time" after seeing it recommended in another ask, and I'm curious about a "trick" that involves a rotary phone. The trick was "so that the KGB agents who tapped our phones wouldn't be able to make anything out" [more inside]
My parents have asked me for a Christmas list this year, and they do a format of something you need, something you want, something to wear, and something to read. I have no trouble filling out small, reasonable gifts for need, wear, and read, but I absolutely cannot figure out something I 'want'. My mom really likes this format, so I'd like to stick with it, but I can't figure anything out this year. Small details after the jump, but without all too much detail to try and get a lot of ideas. I love collections of photos that document the ordinary parts of everyday life in other places, like traffic cones in Japan. I’m not really looking for art and cultural examples, like the masks of Mexico, but a collection of the baguette delivery boxes of Moorea would awesome. Please share similar web sites, instagram, anything else not requiring a log in that you enjoy!

I would like an app that keeps track of how much time each person in a conversation, meeting, therapy session, etc talks. This could be done manually. It doesn't have to involve speech recognition or anything. The interface would be something like a chess clock in reverse. There's a spot for each person. When a person starts talking, they tap their spot and the app begins running up their time. When they are done, they tap their spot again to stop their clock. Alternatively, if someone else jumps in they can tap their own spot and the app starts running up their time and stops running up the previous person's time. [more inside]
I am a 32 year old gay guy from Argentina. I work for a big company and some weeks ago I was offered a temporary position in Europe for 9 months, with no extra pay as I would only cover a coworker during her maternity leave. Once I finished it, there was a chance they would want to keep me there or send me back to Argentina to a different city. [more inside]
A number of my favorite books and stories are eerie tales of the sea - China Mieville's novel The Scar, John Wyndham's Out of the Deeps, the boat parts of the Earthsea Trilogy, ghost stories that take place on ships, the Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland, etc. Eerie tales of the sea are extremely restful, for some reason. I especially like tales of Antarctica, such as Ursula Le Guin's "Sur" and Birth of the People's Republic of Antarctica. I would like more. [more inside]
With my last long term full time employment, I was subject to some rather unsavory behavior by my employer. Human resources had to be involved, and I wasn't told very much about the situation and they were not terminated. Most applications ask A) may we contact supervisor and B) why did you leave. Officially I was laid off, as that was really the only retaliation they could legally do (state employment). I obviously won't be getting a good review from that person even though my employment reviews were quite good. What do you say i this situation?
Can anyone suggest an information source for learning about disability/handicapped accessibility resources in other countries? Are public buildings/facilities set-up or required to have ease-of-access entry? I have family members that would like to travel but are concerned about a lack of access. In particular, they are mobility-impaired and use either a walker or scooter for most of their daily activities.
I'm looking for an affordable 2 in 1 laptop that can serve as my primary all purpose machine. I'm not a heavy gamer but I do like to play occasionally. I do some light coding - no seriously computationally expensive stuff. Weight isn't an issue. I'd prefer a larger screen. I don't want a Chromebook or iPad. [more inside]

I ran for years. At one point my knee starting really hurting. I went to the doc and they told me that I had tendinitis. I would take a month off. The pain would stop. I'd run again and it would come back. Ibuprofen would help, but the pain would come back whenever I ran. I tried again recently, after years, same result. Is there anything that I can do to still go running outside? If not, what other forms of cardio can I do? Other info inside. [more inside]

Had severe, treatment-resistant depression for a long time. Recently, after a few suicide attempts, there are two new diagnoses on the horizon: my psychiatrist thinks I may have bipolar 2 rather than depression, my therapist agrees and is pretty sure I also have borderline personality disorder. I've got a basic, Tumblr-and-Wikipedia-level understanding of both of those. I know they're treatable and the stigma they carry is often unfair. I know DBT for borderline is A Thing. What else should I know about living with either of these diagnoses? What books or articles should I read? What resources should I make use of?
YANMD, but I slipped 3 discs in June, and have been in physio twice a week for most of the time since then, with two spinal epidurals in August and September. I feel like I should be better than I am by now, and would like advice on what other kind of treatment to look into. [more inside]

Why was freedom of movement one of the founding principles of the European Union? Just that--I think it's part of the classic canon, like Bukowski or TS Eliot or something. Might've even been quoted in a television show like Mad Men. Would love to read the full thing again.
My wife and I would like to get a dog. We're both fond of pretty much all kinds of dogs, but there are a couple of practical considerations. First, we have a cat, so we're looking for a gentle dog with a good sense of humor (the cat is pretty funny.) Secondly, our house has lots of stairs. The dog would need to be able to handle stairs, certainly in the prime of life and, hopefully, when older, too. Given that we may need to carry the dog up the stairs in its senior years, though, maybe we should look for one that weighs no more than, say, 50 pounds. [more inside]

Is there an organization that helps people like me work this out?

We, a family of four with two adult children from New Zealand, are spending two weeks around Christmas and New York in New York City. What is not to be missed, and indeed to be avoided, from a Christmas point of view? We like food, music - classical and jazz - and museums. Any thoughts on where to have Christmas Eve or Christmas Day lunch? We have some pretty strong family traditions (mainly Hungarian) at this time of the year but these are normally based around our home. It will be exciting to try something new. We will be staying in Williamsburg if that helps. All suggestions welcome.

Over on the blue, this thread is discussing wartime experiments in undersea tsunami-creating bombs. A while ago, I found a reference to cold war Soviet plans to nuke the North Sea, wiping out the oil field infrastructure and causing a massive tsunami that would devastate the north-eastern UK coast. This was before the Russian revelations mentioned in the thread. I've been unable to re-find my original reference or anything else related. Fantasy? Fiction? Real plan? Any atomheads know more?

I'm going on a ladies' weekend next week. We have a woman who doesn't eat red meat, and an egg allergy. I need a luxurious hangover type breakfast that doesn't have eggs! I'd intended to make an overnight type casserole (bread soaked in egg overnight, with ham and cheese) but that so doesn't work. She does eat turkey bacon. Any ideas? I'm a great cook but not experienced with the no egg thing.
When I first got my rescue dog, Huggy, mefi was very helpful in assisting me as a newbie dog owner. Thanks! I've had her now for almost two years, and it's been wonderful. Until yesterday, I would have said the one thing I was sure of in her training was that she was responsive to the recall command. And she always has been, until she wasn't and the consequences could have been dire. Is there anything further I can do to strengthen it, or is she simply doomed to life on a leash? [more inside]

Last night I added some vegetables (broccoli and green peppers) and canned tuna to a jar of commercial pasta sauce, heated the whole lot until the vegetables were thoroughly cooked, ate half, put the remaining half into a loosely covered container about an hour later, and then forgot to put the container into the fridge (grrr!). It was sitting out for about 8 hours in total. Is this safe to eat?

This thing must have been for a phone at one point. What I don't understand is the space below. It looks like some kind of speaker grille but I can't figure out what it would have been for. There's a big hollow space behind the grille but there's no obvious way to open it. Maybe the previous owners screwed the shelf on in such a way that prevents it from being opened? If I were to access that space, can anyone think of something useful / interesting that could be done with it? Thanks!
I migrated my photos from Apple Photos to Google Photos and hate it. I can't migrate back, so now my photos are in multiple places. While we were having a fight, my partner kicked me accidentally and I don't know how to feel about it. We usually get along well (we are both very anti-confrontational). I grew up with a verbally abusive parent and I am used to smoothing things over as much as possible. I feel like I don't have any perspective from which to look at this incident and tell if it is really worrying, or just an accident, or a small red flag to keep an eye on. Any opinions are welcome. Now, much more sober, we are not connected, and I see the default "Add Friend" button on their profile instead of the "Friendship Request Sent" icon that usually shows up when a request has been sent but neither accepted nor rejected. I know one possible explanation is that the request was already received and rejected -- but what if I actually never pressed the button? [more inside]

I'm thinking of doing some locums work for an agency and would thus become an independent contractor (1099). I understand this means I will have to pay my own social security and Medicare taxes. It sounds like I also have to pay taxes quarterly--how does that work? Is there an additional self-employment tax I'm required to pay? I am married to a non-resident alien so I always file 1040 married separately, can I still do that? What else is there to know, and what else is there to watch out for? [more inside]

Last year I asked people to donate to the ACLU in my name as my gift. I'd like to do the same this year, but I want to add a feminist organization (for obvious reasons). I'm looking for something that will use money effectively to get women elected to office and/or end harassment. Basically, a respectable way to smash the patriarchy. (I thought of NOW, but I don't know if they've gotten top-heavy and ineffective like so many long-lived organizations.) Thanks!
I'm curious how radio stations made voices like this and how I might do that today.
I'm a home chef looking for new and different recipes that will challenge my lately-underused cooking skills, or at least encourage my creativity in the kitchen. Intermediate to advanced is OK. I have no dietary restrictions. Anything goes, but bonus points if 1) it's fun to cook [and eat, of course], and/or 2) doesn't require too many expensive ingredients. Doesn't have to be fancy or haute cuisine - could be anything from chicken & waffles to, well, consommé. Prefer direct recipe links online (with photos) over cookbook recommendations. [more inside]
Until this morning, I used the Morning Coffee firefox extension heavily. You click the button on your toolbar, and all of today's websites load as tabs (different days of the week can be customized). So, I just got a haircut literally yesterday. I'm not from the USA and am not really aware of style trends there. The haircut I got looks very much like this. It looks good on me and it's not going to raise any eyebrows where I live, but it just came to my attention that this haircut, or ones like it, are now being associated with neonazis in the USA. I am going to the USA in one week to attend a wedding. A Jewish wedding. Is my hair a real problem, or is it just an overblown internet thing? Do I need an emergency head shave?

They're telling you to do something (verb) but they don't conjugate. Are they a conjunction? Something weird?
My grandfather had a habit in correspondence using last names only. Thus, in 1931, he was in Berlin, attending a gathering of the International Women's League for Peace, where spoke: "The Ohioan (we should guess Czech) Brode [who] propounded the program of his own city society – a league emphasizing the word “progress” - and tried to get a Berlin branch started." I'm looking to make some DIY, teenage-y/college student music. Like the stuff people make in their bedroom alone by themselves. Particularly dreamy/slightly twee/electronic pop. Some bands I'm interested in are Crying and Stars. I don't know anything about music theory. I don't want to do anything complicated until I understand this stuff better. Where do I start? Should I buy a mini synthesizer? Toy piano?
We've had a newborn living with us for the last 6 months or so (previously), and the time is quickly approaching for him to transition to living with his birth family. This is all being handled by an Organization who does These Things and we're working with a team there that has been really great throughout this process. The transition should go smoothly, but we're at a bit of a loss of what to do when we come home that first time without the boy who has been (and will always be considered) our son. [more inside]

This may seem a bit silly but I've never had the flu before that I know of. Two nights ago around 8pm I felt a sudden very sore throat with some swelling and closed-throat feeling, plus significant muscle/joint pain. I took a sleeping pill and slept all night and most of the next day, by last night I felt 90% better and am back at work today. The weird part is the exact same thing happened three weeks ago. Is this what a flu is? Something else? I do tend to be a worrier.

I just woke up from a dream in which I was sitting in a used bookstore, absorbed in a novel that was printed like a coffee table art book - a big heavy hardback in which more than half the pages were printed with beautiful reproductions of colorful 19th through 21st century paintings; but instead of text about the paintings, the text was a contemporary novel. Has a book like that ever really existed?

My bf of a year and a half have had ongoing issues over his dog's aggressive behavior, including snapping at my face and lunging and growling at several people. Multiple requests to get her trained have gone nowhere. BF also shuts down and withdraws any time this comes up, to the point I feel like I have to prepare for a breakup every time I initiate the discussion. No one else seems to have an issue with the dog, so maybe I really am the one in the wrong? [more inside]

Sending a Christmas package with snacks/sweets that my friend in the UK can't get over there. I don't want to ask her favorites because I want it to be a surprise. Suggestions? Lighter weight is better, as postage has gotten ridiculous. I saw this thread but it's been three years and maybe more stuff is available over there now.
I buy gifts for a local kiddo every holiday season. This year the nine-year-old girl I was assigned asked for craft supplies. I want to put together a kit of amazing, fun stuff for her to get creative with! But I am at a loss, and all the "craft buckets" seem lacking and sad and full of only pom poms and googley eyes (which are great but kind of have limited creative range)! Assuming a $50 budget for craft supplies, help me put together an AMAZING group of gifts to make my very own craft bucket for her. [more inside]

Would someone mind breaking this into down into to understandable terms, please? My friend has asked her district appointed agent who advised her to move her savings from a 403b to a Voya account several times and yet she still have no idea why these rider fees are more than the interest accrued, or even what they are (and why are they in parenthesis)? She is retiring soon from a district position. She and I would like to know exactly what is going on here. (Details below) Thanks in advance! [more inside]
For the last month, I've been looking at the DSA as a political organization. I was impressed by their multi-tendency nature and their willingness to work within other parties (mostly the Democratic Party) in order to achieve goals. After their sudden surge in the Nov 7 election, I decided to check them out in person. I just went to a small local meeting in my area (about ten people) and saw what at least the locals are about. Now, I want to know, should I start paying dues and join them? [more inside]

I'm a full-time employee making a comfortable salary, and I have been taking courses one-at-a-time at a local university (through a certificate program in the same department) since 2015. I've been getting a generic medication from the same CVS for a couple years, but just moved to NYC. When I picked up the prescription from my new CVS, the copay was about $30 more than usual. Very basic question about real estate purchases and buyer/seller brokers in New York/Western Massachusetts. Recommendations? I'm looking for some fantasy, historical fiction, regular fiction, or sci-fi novels to read for the purposes of escapism. I'm open to webcomics, too, and podcasts/audiobooks, and kid's books, and movies. Anything where I can really sink into another world and lose myself. [more inside]
Alright, so I've had a good thing going with someone, I'm 26, he's a bit younger, it's just that it's long distance - lasting for cca 2 months now. And we really have not much time for each other, but i've felt good more or less so far. I did not have a feeling I was being too clingy, of course i write to him sometimes. The thing is that he shares the room with a friend and we can barely talk relaxed. Today as I called him, he told me he ''needs to be alone a bit'' because ''his roommate is gone'0.' because i mentioned that we don't really talk a lot, je claimed he didn't want to hang up on me because of that. ''I don't want to talk to you too much because we'll get bored of each other then and i feel uncomfortable when i have nothing to say.'' [more inside]
My hair likes to hang in strands. I can brush it, and then for a little while it will be curtain-esque, but then it just returns to being locks. It's wavy hair (probably around 1c); can look almost completely straight when brushed, but tends to air-dry in wavy locks. I do see other people with hair that is more of a homogeneous mass, and I think it looks nicer. Why does my hair not do this? Can I get it to do this?

If you were an auntie who was asked to be the mystery reader for your favorite 4 year-old's preschool class, what would be a funny book or one with surprises in it? It must be short enough to read in 15 - 20 minutes, have good pictures for sharing, and not be one of those books that every 4 year old has already read. (Mystery has nothing to do with the genre of book, BTW -- the reader is a surprise to the students, but a mystery would be great!)
I'd call this inside baseball, but it's inside ice dance: how do the ISU world rankings work? Inspired by the documentary Venus, I'd like to make prints of my vulva (by which I mean: brush paint onto vulva, press paper against vulva, voila). To make this as safe for delicate tissues as possible, I'm curious as to the best paint recipe out there to use. Considerations: viscosity, should be sugar-free, no unnecessary ingredients. I was thinking of either an organic flour/salt/water paste + color, or tempera (egg yolk + color). Coloring agent: beet root powder, carrot powder, turmeric? Are there any better ideas/dangers? I've seen paint that is supposedly safe for sex, but it has too many ingredients for my liking. Thank you!

When I use my iPhone in cold weather, it sometimes turns itself off. I thought that was because the battery performs poorly in the cold, so I got an external battery with a cable, so I could keep using my phone while the battery stays warm in my pocket. Growing up in the early 80s, my hippie parents and all their hippie friends had this gold-plated elephant with red rhinestone eyes on their mantels next to the incense burners (not always literally, just setting the scene). Do we know why or how the hippie home decor market got flooded with them? I have weirdly fond memories of them and I'm curious.

Trying to put together a detailed map of Barcelona with all the places that I want to visit pinned to a saved map. Managed to create the map but all of Google's suggested restaurants and shops are also showing up, in addition to my saved places. Is there a way to remove that layer of suggested businesses? I don't really care to see the McDonald's or other random restaurants on my map layer.

I developed unusual and prolonged sinus damage last year around the same time that I spent a few consecutive weekends packing-up and moving my elderly parents. Both are incontinent and lived in terrible conditions to which they had become accustomed. I will spare you the details but imagine the worst. Now double it. The smell alone was terrible and overwhelming. Could my exposure to these conditions have had anything to do with the sinus problems that still plague me today? [more inside]
Looking for a fiction book about love. The catch - not a book about new love, puppy love, unrequited love, etc. I'd like a book about people who have been in love for a decade or more and are happy (or end up happy). The love story doesn't have to be a main plot in the story, but it would be appreciated. [more inside]

I'll be alone, which is sort of the whole point. After reading A Pattern Language, I noticed it was up on archive.org. Things on the Internet Archive are generally in the public domain or are otherwise noted, but I also know that anyone can upload anything to it. Christopher Alexander is still alive, but is this somehow in the public domain? I'm hoping to do a project with it, and it would make it way easier if this really was in the public domain.
Macbook Pro user for the last 10-12 years I have about 200 gigs worth of mp3's & other music on a mac formatted portable hard drive.. Mac book finally died.....Decided to go with a PC laptop... PC is not recognizing my mac formatted hard drive and therefore I have been unable to rebuild my itunes library....Stupidly cancelled my iutnes match a year ago....Murphy's Law, I know. Anyways I have tons of live shows and super rare music that is not replaceable via spotify, itunes, amazon music or whoever... This music resides on my portable hard drive? Did a bit of googling, but not sure of the best and safest option to transfer these 'mac' mp3 files to my new PC. Hellllp?
I'm a teacher with a small, outdated programming background who wants to build a website for my own students. I have a couple of very large lists of vocab, ranked by frequency/approximate difficulty. I'd like to use these lists to create a web game exactly like the one at freerice.com for my students. I need to be able to change up the lists without too much trouble down the road: if I find typos or want to change a definition, for instance, I'd like to do that without a colossal inconvenience. I thought it would be fun to learn how to do this myself. What programming language or tools should I study? Is this something Python could do? Thank you! [more inside]

Yeah, so I recently glanced through the rooms offered section of Craigslist and noticed one that was directly advertising to single parents and encouraging them to move to Dallas. In conversation this evening we were talking about the use of nauseous vs nauseated. Often I hear “I am nauseous” when from my understanding the correct usage is “I am nauseated.” However, the former is so prevelant that it has become an acceptable usage. (**Not here to argue about what is technically correct or incorrect,**) This reminded me of another example that’s been on the tip of my tongue the whole night but I can’t quite recall. It is a similar situation in which a different form of the word is used incorrectly but it is done so often that it has become an acceptable usage of such. The example I am thinking of is very similar in that “I am....” Can you think of any examples?

I took over a year ago as Chair of the Board of an established non-profit organization whose previously excellent reputation has been slowly degrading over the last decade or so. Over this year, it’s become clear that things are out of control behind the scenes. I’m worried about possible malfeasance leading to liability on the part of the Board members. I recently came across the husband and wife rating scales published by a psychiatrist in 1939 and was surprised to see that a husband would score 20 points for "ardent lover--sees that wife has orgasms in marital congress," as I didn't think there was much professional or personal insight back then into female sexual satisfaction. What would sex have been like in different centuries, and when did it become important for women to be sexually satisfied? [more inside]

I am somewhat ashamed that I have to ask this, given that it's 2017 and I'm a grown-ass, educated person, so please do not laugh. When I am streaming video (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) does it use more data to watch it on my 48" TV than it does to watch it on my iPhone? Assume that I mean the same degree of video quality in both cases. Is the small screen view drawing less data to make me a smaller picture, or is it the same amount of data just sizing up or down as necessary?
I have a designed a pair of sarong-like pants where when you complete "putting them on" you finish the process by tying a shoelace/bow knot behind you just below your lower back. Because of this you cannot see the knot being tied. Is there neurological/Health benefits tying this unseen knot?
I have family who like to visit (great!) but sometimes will stay for over a week. They never say specifically how long they'd like to stay. I just learned that my recent ex had been lying to me about various things, great and small. So I'm heading around the world for three months. I bought a luggage set and it fell apart, luckily, before I got going. So now I'm looking whatever the biggest checked bag is that I can take with me. Ideally it's strong, light, rolls well and isn't black (ideally red or brown). So I can find it on the luggage carousel. What's the right Joe Vs. The Volcano luggage for me?

My wife has an older Mountain Hardwear rain jacket with pockets that zip shut; these zippers were not sewn down to the surrounding fabric but instead were bonded with some kind of glue strip, and that glue is no longer holding. I'm writing an obituary for my father and I know it would be important to him to get the details of his time in the US Marine Corps right. I (early 40s) have been dealing with depression since HS. I tried therapy once in college, but couldn't really bring myself to go into anything because it all just seems so dumb compared to people who really have problems. I have my first therapy appointment since then booked for this week. Any advice for pushing through that reluctance?
Recently used a recipe where you could make one creamy chicken base and use it for several different recipes (pasta bake/pie/something with spuds). Minced beef and tomatoes is another common one. What other bases could I make a load of and then make several different things out of, depending on whim?

Hey guys. Listening to my music tonight, I noticed many of my favourite artists are almost more talking than singing, though it's definitely not rapping either. What would you call this? This morning I pulled a tick off of my 5-year-old daughter's scalp. The little bugger can be seen in these pictures, with a dime in the shot for scale. I know you're not my doctor, etc., and we're in touch with her pediatrician - her course of treatment isn't going to change based on this question. But is there any way to estimate how long the tick has been attached and feeding, based on how engorged it looks? We're in Western Pennsylvania, and I guess this is a deer tick.
Looking for experienced winter bike riders with bike light recommendations: what works for 60 minute commutes (each way) in cold winter temps (down to 0 F / -18 C)? Ideally I'd like front and back lights that are USB-rechargeable, quick-release, 120-min+ runtime, steady & pulse options, and a long lifetime. For the headlight, I need something that's bright enough to illuminate (not just "be seen"). [more inside]
Which iPhone is the least likely to break when dropped? Right now, I have an iPhone SE (which I love and doesn't break when I drop it) but I've been noticing that my photos are terrible compared to everyone else's. I'd love an iPhone X, but all of the media coverage is about how dropping the phone means cracked screen & back doom. I drop my phone multiple times a day, and I don't want to get a case for it. Could other phone droppers advise on the best way forward?

I have been using Ivory or Dove or Irish Spring type bar soap in the shower my whole life, but sometimes when I'm visiting friends, I notice that they have soap that feels much more decadent: it's a more substantial (larger/thicker) bar, with a more pronounced arch and rounded corners, and it feels kind of creamy. Also, I am open to literary magazines and literary journals that focus on social movements and activism too. Thank-you!
I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks, and some voice actors are better than others. Two I like are Tom Weiner and Enn Reitel. Can you recommend more?
I've been working with a psychotherapist for about a year and a half and I'm feeling stuck. For the past two sessions we've been talking about the therapy, and I'm not feeling comfortable with his answers. I'd like help in evaluating them. More details below the fold. [more inside]
I'm finally reaching out to see if I can find a therapist. But I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for. Hoping you all can give me some ideas about whether it's CBT I should try or something focused on anxiety or if I have real unresolved emotions that need a lot of talking through? [more inside]
I'm searching for a flared or A-line sweater dress with partial wool content. For under $200, which seems like a reasonable thing to ask, but where are they? [more inside]
Can you please recommend an at least somewhat charming, very clean not very corporate hotel under $250 within easy walking distance (< 15 minutes) of Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, 2660 Woodley Rd NW Washington DC. We could stay at the Marriott or Omni but prefer something less giant/chain. Difficulty: Not The Normandy (which October 2017 yelp says has bed bugs - do not wish to risk this) or Woodley Park Guest House (which is full the dates we need).
What are some resources to help experienced/advanced amateur photographer develop craft even further? From an aesthetic perspective, not technical. [more inside]
I started taking Zoloft a month ago, and I’ve noticed a difference between taking two 50mg pills and one 100mg pill from the same manufacturer. Am I crazy? [more inside]
Strikes seem to be impending for various unions in my part of the world. I am looking for what needs to be communicated to the general public by the union during or right before a strike. This is mostly a US question, but experience from outside the US is also welcome. [more inside]
Asking experienced parents: I have a three month old baby. Other than the sleep deprivation, caring for my baby has been great so far. I am able to write my novel while he sleeps, and sometimes when he is awake too. When does he get more active and I have to entertain him full time? [more inside]
My three-year-old son is going to be in a wedding (he's the ring bearer, as he'd be the first to admit), and I want to buy him a real, tie-it-yourself (not clip-on or pre-tied) bow tie. Where can I them for sale online?
I can't find any motivation to do anything with my life. Now that I’m in my early 40s, is it too late to change? [more inside]
How do I move on from arguing with my therapist? [more inside]
Please recommend: recent science fiction books (and stories) that are based on sciences and disciplines other than the usual 'hard' ones like physics, chemistry, astronomy, math, biology, computers and engineering. Looking for things like musicology, linguistics, sociology, philosophy, criminology, economics, etc. [more inside]
I want to make the clay covered pens seen here. What is the best, least expensive clay for this project? [more inside]
We have a new employee who has somehow avoided using computers over the past ever. Any particular recommendations for an online course that teaches the basics: Navigating via keyboard and mouse, finding your way through drives and folders, basic commands like copy and paste, using menus, email, navigating and searching online, etc.? Additionally, the basics of Microsoft Office would be good in the same or a separate course.
We're moving and will need baby gates. What are the best options that are very safe and can absolutely be opened with one hand by an adult carrying a rambunctious monster but NOT by the monster herself, even if she is very clever? Complication: wide doorway. [more inside]
I bought some sealed plastic containers of freshly-cooked lentil dahl on the evening of Tuesday 31 October and put it straight in the fridge. Just now, the evening of Thursday 2 November, I put it in the freezer. The ingredients are lentils, oil, tumeric and bay leaves. [more inside]
Haven't used it in years yet I still get emails about posts, and because I don't use it, I don't want it to exist for other people's use. I just want to delete it with a minimum of fuss. If you've done this recently, do you have any tips?
No one at the office is particularly interested in doing a gift exchange this year because it seems frivolous. The part that feels good is the giving, but receiving a gag gift or candles, socks or wine doesn't do anything for us. Instead we'd like to give physical gifts to people in need and I am way overthinking the logistics. [more inside]
I received an informal job offer for a job I'm really excited for. I've negotiated salary and a start date. Can I give notice at my current job without having the formal offer letter in hand? [more inside]
We are a dozen women of mixed beginner/intermediate skill in a weekly tap dance class. We want to develop a fun routine to do in the spring show, and we need inspiration! Video searches come up short. Help us make people laugh. [more inside]
Hyper-extrovert, adventuring parent here with a *gasp* introverted child. Want to not torment him too much, please share with me what it's like to be a book-worm, shy, introvert, mellow kind of person, as well as what it was like as a child. [more inside]
When I last used Google Arts and Culture, there was a way to compare two images on the same screen. I cannot see how to do that now, and all of the sources that say it's possible are old. [more inside]
So, I'm watching the world series with my grandfather, we see car commercials and he tells me about being in a GM engine plant (where he worked for 40+ years) repairing a machine near a crew shooting a commercial where a nickel balanced on top of an engine doesn't fall over when the engine is started because IT'S JUST SUCH A SMOOTH HIGH QUALITY ENGINE. According to him, they had to shoot it about 1000 times. Anyway, anybody know how to find that commercial? I thought it'd be fun to watch with him.
I got cited for expired registration on my car (just plain forgot about it). I now have it registered. The court date is Friday. That officer said that if I show the judge that the vehicle is now registered, that the judge will probably drop the charge. If he doesn't ... I noticed that the citation lists the vehicle as a Subaru. It is not a Subaru, it is an Audi. Would it be worth mentioning this technicality to the judge?
For a feminist art project, I’m hoping to find all (or at least a lot) the depictions of nude female bodies in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Since gender isn’t that simple: I’m looking for depictions of nude bodies of people who likely menstruated.) Is there an easy way to search their collection by content that might reveal these images?
Like many people, I'm getting increasingly frequent scam calls. Sometimes I'll search unfamiliar numbers online and will come across dozens of sites where they've been reported: 800notes.com, whocallsme.com, whycall.me, shouldianswer.com, whoscall.in, etc. What's the deal with these sites? They don't have any differentiating features. Are they their own scam?
I have an interview next week for a Lead Business Analyst position and the HR person said it would be three hours long - the first part with a panel and the second with the hiring manager. The job description is IT-heavy and is frankly a stretch, but when I spoke on the phone with the non-tech gatekeeper yesterday it sounded like something I could manage via filling in gaps in my knowledge. Now I have to convince a panel. [more inside]
Landlord just gave notice they plan to raise our rent by $100 next month. We are also required to give 30 days' notice if we plan to move or we forfeit our deposit. Can they do this? [more inside]
After twelve years of wonderful monogamous sex exclusively with one other person, and never the faintest hint of any erectile or orgasm problems, my first and second attempts at intercourse with a different person have been so humiliating that I fear I now have a hangup that will make it forever impossible. I am ordering some stickers for packages of toffee I make every year and the design-decision-making part of my brain has overloaded. I am using Moo and have a basic design I like, but could use some opinions on the text (color, font, justification). Some choices. [more inside]
I have an old Vanguard Simple IRA account with less than $10k in it and I have not contributed to it in a long time. Should I cash it out? Should I roll it over into an active 401(k) account (it's not Vanguard)? Should I start contributing to it again on my own? [more inside]

Last couple years we've bought health insurance on the exchanges. We're already on the cheapest plan sold there. This year we are facing a big increase in premiums, big enough that we're considering dropping coverage altogether. We'd like to explore our options though. [more inside]
I've got a Steam credit and would like to use it to purchase a game for my 11" Macbook Air. I'm looking for something that can play nicely on that and doesn't require a lot of coordination (no first person shooters, etc.). Games I've really liked (some are boardgames but they give you an idea of what I'm after): Skyrim, Carcassonne, Discworld, Journey, Ticket to Ride, Splendor, Twilight Struggle, I Love Hue, Portal, Tetris, and anything wordy or puzzley. There is so much choice on Steam, even when filtering down to Mac OS, that I'm really lost and could use some recommendations please. Thanks!
I have been offered a job under funky circumstances. I think I have to decline the offer, but I don't know exactly how to word it, and also -- I'm not 100% sure I ought to decline it. Please advise! [more inside]

I've been on a reading spree* trying to understand the American origins and recent political consequences of libertarianism/free market fundamentalism, and much of the earlier history seems to involve a reaction to either the labor movement or the New Deal. I'd like some reading suggestions on either of those histories. [more inside]
I'm currently in the middle of shooting a series of hands-on tutorials and have built a nice little camera set-up. This set-up is hands-free, gives me control over framing, and packs away quickly. But I also live in Scotland and by mid-day it is now too dark to take photos indoors (and too wet to go outside to set up). Talk to me about a good way of adding much-needed light to my photos. [more inside]
Who do I get to install a new gas wall oven where the current unit gas wall oven is beyond repair? Needed parts are no longer made and "universal" parts don't fit my oven. [more inside]
So, our kids have iPads. We have a house rule that they need to ask permission before buying anything. In fact, until recently they were UNABLE to make purchases without getting approval from one of us. Somehow was changed, and in the last week out daughter racked up $300 in charges on some stupid High School app. [more inside]

Months ago I volunteered to provide the food for our local shelter's art fundraiser. Normally I'd cook, and enjoy it. However, work and life has thrown some curveballs, and it's become clear I'm overextended. The event is from 4-7 on a Saturday afternoon, so I'd been thinking mostly heavy, savory bites. Non-heel-wearers of MeFi, help me find my shoe unicorn. The "stylish" and "no heel" part seem to be the most complicated. Sometimes durability is an issue too. Assume price is no object. Examples inside. [more inside]
The deep web is hundreds of times larger than the surface web. Something so enormous has to have some beneficial or interesting things, doesn't it? The dark web is only a teeny, tiny part of it, and I have no interest in anything that happens there. But I have a lot of interest in seeing what else there is on the deep web. What do you guys think?
I'm in a legal domestic partnership (Wisconsin) with my favorite and best, and thanks to Scott Walker all state employees' domestic partners, including me, will be losing health insurance coverage effective Jan. 01, 2018. Me and mine are considering our options, including getting a marriage license to retain current benefits, and we have a couple of questions to resolve before we do anything. [more inside]
Last night, our landlord called to make sure that we didn't have anything stored in the basement, because apparently the former first floor tenant that just moved out took a bunch of stuff that wasn't hers...including the light bulbs. What? Why on earth would someone take light bulbs from a common area when moving out of an apartment? [more inside]
