October 2015 Archives
I was dumped at the end of September. He paid rent for October, but moved out on the 15th. I have an arrangement worked out with the landlady to end the lease early and move out in early December. We all forgot that dumper and I paid first & last month's rent when we signed the lease, so technically his last month in the apartment should have been covered. Should I refund his last month's rent? More details inside you need 'em... [more inside]
My boyfriend is being sooper nice to me while in grad school and I want to surprise him with a pre-getaway getaway. [more inside]
We're about to come into a somewhat large sum of money. We've never really had money before, and we're not sure how to manage it. We've got a variety of debt, and a strong desire for a house. What to prioritize? [more inside]
News stories like this one say that Silverberry Mouhon is named after the author AR Silverberry. Fine. But Silverberry Mouhon was born in 1993, and according to the author's bio, AR Silverberry didn't start writing seriously until 1998 (and didn't have any novels published until 2010). So what's the deal? [more inside]
I wish I could remember this young adult fiction book, which must date back to the 1970s. I can only remember a few faint details, and I'm not sure I have them right. [more inside]
I've recently started working in a new office where everybody dresses quite well. Prior to this, I was in full-time student mode, so I never cared about what I wore. I want to start looking more put-together. It shouldn't be this difficult to buy about 5-6 basics to update my office wardrobe, but I am SO. PARALYZED. at the idea of having to spend money on more than 1-2 items at a time. I waste hours and hours looking at clothes online and never buy a single item. This needs to stop. [more inside]
OK, I have done some googling, but no good finds yet -- I need help with last-minute Halloween costume ideas using a short pink wig and my own glasses... I'm average weight and pretty short.
My favorite candy of all time appears to not be made anymore and my heart is full-on broken. Darrell Lea Ginger Licorice used to be available in the US at World Market stores; it's long gone from there and it appears from Darrell Lea's website that they don't make it anymore. I need to either find a stash somewhere or find a good replacement. Help! [more inside]
I realize this is slightly similar to the previous question, except it's about lipstick, and less about setting it than getting it to show up in the first place. My silver lip color is just not doing what's advertised on the tin. [more inside]
I bought a tube of silver cream makeup for my halloween costume weeks ago! I thought I was so prepared, but now I'm realizing when I apply it to my face, it doesn't really seem to dry. I'm not close to any costume stores, unfortunately, but I do have a pretty well stocked drug store nearby, what should I be putting on on top of this to ensure that my face is not wet all night? Or alternatively, have I just not been waiting long enough-- how long should this stuff take to dry?
What is going on in this animation? Is this real?
I have always held a deep love and excitement for the Southern Gothic literary tradition and its sundry themes. But I've long ago exhausted the likes of Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, Cormac McCarthy and most of the well known folks in between. I'm looking for more obscure or unexpected works, like Fred Chappell's "Dagon". Books as well as films. Does not have to be "traditional" Southern Gothic (see below fold). The more psychologically unsettling, the better. [more inside]
My husband and I were enjoying the new 'Godspeed, You Black Emperor' album, entitled 'Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress.' We were digging it. Then we got to song #3, "Lamb's Breath"... at some point in the song (hard to say when, and I'm too spooked to listen to it again) the keyboard drops into a long droning sound... [more inside]
I'm a lady. I need a bag to take to my semi-professional job. Please help me find the perfect one! [more inside]
Does anyone know why people are increasingly receiving rights now rather than at other points in history? Like, women's rights, Civil rights, gay rights, trans rights, animal rights, etc.? Jon Haidt talks about how Western liberals (among many others) have a morality loosely based on reducing harm, but how has that developed? Why now? I'm looking for any literature on the topic, ranging from academic to loose conjecture.
My friends son is sick and REALLY wants to go trick or treating. Help me help them find a wheelchair! [more inside]

After years and years of not getting the pasta right, everyone in my circle of friends and beyond seems to know that you need to finish the pasta in the sauce, including some of the cooking water. It's such a vast improvement. Do you know similar simple "tricks" or methods from other regional cuisines? I remember reading this thread about Japanese and Korean cooking with great interest, but I'm curious about other cooking styles across the World as well. [more inside]
I have a solution of (14%) sandalwood essential oil in jojoba oil. I also have pure jojoba oil. I would would like to end up with a 15 ml solution of 2% sandalwood in jojoba oil. How do I get there?
My elderly dad would like to listen to bird, owl, and nature sounds that are going on outside of his house from inside the house. Is there an outdoor microphone and indoor receiver (amp? speaker? I'm not quite sure what I am looking for here) system that will do this for him easily? [more inside]
Someone in my work environment screwed me over and behaved in a way that was seriously unethical. The person who was actually responsible is not someone I need to see day-to-day (luckily), but the person who benefitted from his actions is someone with whom I have a close working relationship. Assume there is no further productive point in discussing it with anyone, and no fix that can be made. Also assume I prefer not to quit my job right now. How can I best work through the anger on my own so I can behave professionally? And how can I improve my poker face while being around the coworkers in question? [more inside]
I have a coworker that I report to, and they constantly ask, "ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?!" But then they seem to want a literal answer and I have no good response. [more inside]
My nine year old son recently told his teacher that he sometimes hears a voice talking to him. Now what? [more inside]
As my life unfolds, there is in the short term a growing likelihood I may need to seek residential treatment / hospitalization for major depression. I’m finding it very hard to do research, as most easily accessible search engine results appear (to me) to have been gamed or SEO’d, and what few respectable websites I do come across are barebones or tight-lipped. Perhaps this is because of a wider turn from institutionalization or residential treatment. But still I have questions, and I’d be grateful for any insight... [more inside]
I just finished a trial run of my Donald Trump Halloween face makeup (like this) and I'm pretty happy with the results. However, given my personal opinion of the man, I don't want my costume to be some sort of homage, so I'd like to add a funny or ironic twist. Puns are acceptable. [more inside]

About a month ago I shaved my head and found the skin underneath wasn't in great shape, pimply and blotchy. I figured this was just a side effect of never seeing the light of day before, so I didn't worry too much about it. Now it's a month late my head is just as blotchy and pimply as it was the first time. What can I do to get it smooth and beautiful—or at least not embarrassing? [more inside]

Please help me find an old (older than 15+ years) probably political cartoon about children at their classroom desks praying (possibly before a test); multiple mainstream religions are represented but one student has a mini-bonfire on the desk doing what appeared to me so long ago as a pagan ritual.
Here is picture. It is either walnut or oak, I am not sure. I believe those are water marks on it. The marble top lifts off so it should be pretty easy to restore. I would like to keep the wood look, no painting. What would be simplest way to do this? I have never done anything like this before.
The stress of unemployment and the possibility of not having anymore money to live off of is taking its toll on our health. We seek the support of career coaches and therapists, we apply to jobs, we do the interviews, but almost always another candidate is chosen for the position. How does remain hopeful while in this seemingly endless cycle? [more inside]
When we close either door of our new French Door refrigerator, the opposite door often pops open, and doesn't close completely. The KitchenAid authorized repair guy who came in to look at it said that there's nothing he can do to fix it, because "ALL French Door refrigerators do that". [more inside]

I am still on the hunt for the perfect cafe in or around Los Angeles (preferably with a view of the ocean) where my husband and I can go read our books while sipping coffee. Google shows me lots of expensive beachside restaurants, but that is not what I am after. Outside Los Angeles within a 1-2 hour drive is fine, too.

I picked up a hideous hard plastic fanged ghoul mask at a central California valley supermarket for .49¢. It looks like this fellow, only more colorful. I want to "be" this thing for Hallowe'en, but I don't want to spend the night with gross slimy plastic on my face, especially as there are no breathing holes. How can I easily suspend a traditional plastic mask an inch or three in front of my face? It has big eye holes and tiny side holes to hold an elastic head band, but is otherwise a solid sheet of plastic.

I lost my purse while out shopping and realized that pretty much, my whole life is contained in my purse. If I hadn't found it, I really don't know what I would have/could have done next. I need tips, and tricks for what to do should this happen to me again. If you have ever done the same and have any anecdotes to share, it would be much appreciated. [more inside]

Louis CK is sometimes called a comedian's comedian; CPE Bach is a composer's composer. That is, they are supposedly admired by people in the profession more strongly than by people outside the profession. Who are some _____'s _____'s _____s in their fields, i.e. admired by the people admired by the people we lay consumers admire? (So far, I've only found an article calling Garry Shandling a comedian's comedian's comedian but I'm not sure if he really is.)

I happen to know somebody who is a wonderful writer, a recent honors-in-English graduate of a great college, who writes terrific blog posts about politics as well as many Facebook posts on political issues. He's currently working at his first job -- copyediting for a publisher. How might he get into the field of political speech writing? I assume you pick a candidate you'd like to write for -- but do you approach that candidate directly, or...what?
On two separate occasions I was robbed in Spain, and replaced my NL passport both times. The last time I was at the Netherlands embassy in Madrid they indicated to me that there may be some trouble if I lost it again. My passport is currently missing, and if it doesn't turn up with the Police here in Bulgaria I guess I will have to go through the process of replacing it. Does anyone know what the process is for replacement? What can I expect in terms of 'trouble' from the embassy?
I work for a large university in the Campus Life Services department, and we have a weekly e-newsletter that I would like to make more interactive. Our audience is mainly graduate students who are serious about their studies. At the moment, the e-newsletter we are offering is basically a regurgitation of the online calendar with pictures - I think it could be more. Please share your successful newsletter engagement strategies - thanks!

I'm looking for regular middle schools or high schools in eastern Massachusetts (i.e., the kinds with bricks-and-mortar buildings and classrooms with teachers and students there in person) but that also offer some courses completely digitally. E.g., students might go online to take an AP class or a foreign language not otherwise offered by the school. They might do so from home or from a computer lab at school or similar. [more inside]

I have blepharitis, a condition that makes my eyelids very prone to chalazions (warning: gross). As far as I can tell, this isn't something that can be cured per se, but there are things that can be done to lessen the symptoms. What works for you, fellow blepharitis sufferers? [more inside]
I have a small boombox that I bought brand new. After a while (we're talking Emerson here), it started skipping when playing cds and it skips in the same spots on every cd you put into it (around song #2/3 for most albums). What's the cause of that and can anything be done to fix it? [more inside]
I've been away from my place for about 14 hours and when I got back, I could smell a weak odd smell in my apartment. I figure this is gas since I noticed that both of my stove's top burner pilot lights are out. I've opened some windows and turned on the crappy exhaust fan. Can I relight the pilot lights now or should I wait for a while before relighting?

I'm looking for vegetarian recipes, without beans, which scale well relative to the level of effort. By which I mean: when you make potato salad, you can double it, but you're going to spend 2x the time peeling potatoes. That's bad. Chili (unfortunately, has beans) scales well: you don't need to individually wash every single bean, you just chuck in 2x the number of beans. Any recommendations for recipes? [more inside]

I have a learning disorder called and as a result my math skills are somewhere around a 4th grade level. I can't turn a 3d into a 2d drawing or vice versa and I really can't count money but for going painfully slow. Since I graduated high school I've been looking for a job that I could do where my cognitive function deficits will cause problems keeping the job. So far, lots of odd jobs and low-end jobs with nothing more solid or long term (or better paying). I've thought about going back to school but almost everything requires some kind of math or chemistry. I like working with my hands but my difficulty with math means that doing things like welding (which I trained for) are out because I can't handle the numbers.

We've recently started using an online application system at the company I work for and we're trying to set things up fairly so that some hired employees (e.g., in an admin, management, or HR role) can review unsuccessful candidates' and new applicants' files. Are there any protections we should put in place (legally or otherwise) so that new hires or other employees in these privileged roles cannot see the notes on their own applications, the applications and notes of their hiring competition, or applications and notes of fellow new hires? General advice welcome as well, e.g., if there are any potential use cases or other reasons as to why or why not this would be a good idea. We have the ability to fully customise the online application system as we wish. This is in the UK.

I find myself too invested in a situation which has turned out to be a No-Strings-Attached relationship . This person apparently has a huge social circle, whereas I am more of a loner. The bottom line is that I sense that she has plenty of options to choose from. I don't. And she has been explicit about this fact. The prospect of seeing her is generally the high point of my week. Her cancelling at the last minute because something else came up tends to be a real bummer. [more inside]
Sometime in the last couple of years I read a great description of the feeling of dozing off in the back of your parents car on a journey at night. I cannot for the life of me remember where I read it. The part which really struck me concerned the description of the feeling being somewhat uncanny, possibly slightly evil. Does anyone know what it might have been? It might have been something by Stephen King.
I’m looking for bags to use as a gym bag, that don’t look overly gym-y or sporty. I like stylish, pretty, feminine things (more along the lines of Anthropologie, J.Crew, Lululemon), but not overly bright girly/pink things (i.e. not Lily Pulitzer or Vera Bradley). Do you have any suggestions? [more inside]

I've just read When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. What an amazing book! Thanks to my ever-growing collection of nieces and nephews, I've enjoyed lots of middle grade fiction. It's been a few years years since I've picked up a good MG novel, though. Does anyone have any recent recommendations in a similar category or style? I'm looking for sophisticated middle grade fiction with strong crossover appeal.
The advice "The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls" can be found quoted many, many places online (all clearly originating from one ur-source), attributed either to the Ladies Home Journal in 1918 or Earnshaw's Infants Department (invariably identified as "a trade publication"). Which was it? Was it, in fact, either? [more inside]

My Mom is in remission for breast cancer which was diagnosed late last year. She's been in remission since this spring, and has been doing well. She had blood tests done on Friday for the first time since chemo, and was told by her doctor yesterday that "everything looks good." My parents' 50th wedding anniversary is coming up (just over a month) and one of the gifts is going to be a nice bottle of port from the year they got married (1965). Dry, red-wine ports are preferred, but I'm flexible.
I'm on the upswing(fingers crossed) after a year-long bout with depression. Finally found the right combination of medication + therapy to help me get to a slightly better place. However, now that I finally have the energy to start improving myself, I'm at a loss of what to do. I'm looking for concrete life changes that I can make now that I have the motivation to better. We’re heading into our neverending winter here, and I’d like some ideas for exercise videos or games that I can do with my 10 and 12 year old kids. As corny as it is, I’d love a modern day Sweatin to the Oldies. Does such a thing exist? Funny songs and laughing while we do cardio or strength training? We are not fans of most current Pop music – unless it’s being covered by Weird Al. And my daughter made a face when I suggested Yoga, so new agey is out. Any suggestions for videos or Youtube channels or other that could help us out? (We have a PS4 and XBOne, but not a Wii)

I recently completed the videogame Life Is Strange, which I liked very much. The game's conclusion features the song 'Spanish Sahara', by Foals. It's an absolute knockout tune - a sprawling, emotional epic that builds, builds, builds and goes somewhere truly breathtaking without resorting to walls of sound or some kind of 'epic' conclusion. It reminded me of my current favourite song: 'No Reptiles', by Everything Everything, which could be the soundtrack to a montage of a complex life. I'm looking for more songs like these. The more technical the description, the better.

I put the leftovers in a covered (but not sealed) container and forgot to put it in the fridge. I just found it this morning, so it was sitting out for about 12 hours. Can I eat this? I was thinking I could throw everything in a pot and boil it again, or perhaps microwave it.

My mom really likes this image of an elephant balancing on a ball and wants it as a poster for her office. Unfortunately, it seems to be out of print and I can't find it anywhere. She has rejected other similar images--she wants this one. None of the images I've found online are high-res enough to print as a poster. Anyone know where it can be found?
Now that I've gotten a new domain (thanks guys) I want to modernize and streamline my website. I basically want a single page with ' click to expand' photos that looks good on a tablet. Think a nice restaurant website. I have no idea how to do this, my incredibly creaky HTML skills are at least 15 years out of date, and template / design for you sites like Squarespace all want a hosting bundle package. I just want something drop-dead simple that will export an index.htm file at the end. Does this program/service exist? [more inside]
Several years ago I spent time with some German visitors, and after each dinner they passed out airplane bottles of liquer. The tradition, they said, was to drink it down, put the cap on your nose, and hang the bottle from your lip via suction. I've since wondered about this tradition and WHAT exactly was the liquer that they used. Here is a photo if someone could please identify it. Thanks!

I have a problem with remembering people's names. I've read previous posts on the topic and generally I can smilingly apologise and say, "Hey, I'm sorry but I am terrible with names." But my bigger problem is that I meet people in many contexts that don't overlap and all require various levels of professionalism. I don't mind apologising for forgetting their name, but to then add, "...and how do we know each other?" is veering into rudeness. Suggestions?

We are friends with a family that has a daughter the same age as mine. On a recent visit, my daughter told me that the father offered to leave her and her friend (both 10 y.o.) at home alone while he went to pick up his wife. My daughter didn't want to be left alone, so he had them hide between two of the van seats as he drove to pick up his wife to play a "joke" on her. I am not ok with either of these things. Once upon a time I was something of a photographic purist, lugging around a couple of pounds, not to mention, several thousands of dollars worth, of camera body/lens wherever I went. Now, with three young kids in tow, however, the need for convenience has trumped image quality, so, I now shoot most everything with my Moto-X phone. That said, I really miss the image quality so was wondering if there's a high quality, compact camera out there that can bridge the gap between a $3K SLR & iPhone yet still be pocketable?
I need to know if mentioning on an interview that I've just started working a new job is advisable or not. Is it frowned upon to be searching for a new job so quickly, or is it seen as being proactive? Are you supposed to stay on a job you don't think is a good fit just because it's only been a month? These are questions I am wrestling with as I prepare for an interview on Monday. If there are any federal employees or HR folks who can advise on this, I would be so appreciative. [more inside]

OK, so I saw this black metal ring sitting in a urinal at a grocery store. Kind of an odd place for one. I'm curious if this is some sort of sex-related accessory that I'm not familiar with, or if it's just some random chain link that happened to end up in a urinal. It was about an inch in diameter. There's a small break in it. Pics are here.

My good paying and stress free job is boring me, I am not sure what else to do but I feel like I need to try something new that will challenge me more. I am just doing repetitive tasks. Should I quit my job for a lower pay but more stimulating job? [more inside]
Side by side sinks, seen here, and one has a metal bar rusted out. The rusted one is now loose, as a unit (taps, faucet), but still seems to work. No obvious leak, but something caused the rust, right? Where the lines attach to the faucet seem tight. What needs to be done?

YANMD, but until I can see a doctor, I'm looking for guidance on what questions to ask. Student, mid-20s, male, non-smoker, somewhat overweight (not obese) but relatively healthy otherwise. Hi, Ok here's my situation. Last year around this time I was diagnosed with bipolar. I lost my job, my apartment, everything. To that end, I am wondering if anyone can recommend good, detailed resources on how mental health medication works. I know the basics of SSRIs, etc., but why does one work and another not? I know the answer is partly, "Molecules have different shapes! Some shapes fit better!" ...I would like more nuance. Please recommend resources? (And any expert thoughts are also welcome.) So I have officially been unemployed since 9/1. Very long story short but I had a very good career for the last 13 years with steady promos/raises/etc. now I am without a job. I was on severance for about 5 months - have been looking steadily - many interviews but nothing concrete. My dilemma is health coverage. I could go cobra or Obamacare but neither is financially feasible right now. I feel like I would be better off financially to work at a supermarket full time just to get a better deal on benefits. Am I missing something? Since I was on severance until 8/31 i am not eligible for any tax credit for medical since they look at full year income. Most temp jobs do not offer benefits and a lot of the jobs out there I am extremely over qualified for (on paper). I have applied for so many and no call backs. I have had call backs and interviews for higher level jobs but nothing has panned out - not an offer. It kills me how you jump thru hoops for the interview (or multiple) and not even a reply. I guess my bottom line question is do I "dumb down" my resume so I can at least get a job for benefits? Has anyone done that with success? I am also on LinkedIn so would I need to change that also?
The band Hot Chip recently posted a new video that uses archived footage from the 80's. I have tried in vain to find the original source for the "video dating" footage and the "Kids of Tomorrow" footage. I'm hoping someone on here has better luck/skill than me.
I am a paid intern for a small SaaS startup, and in the past month or so, I've been drowning a little at life. It was a children's picture book from the 1970s about a girl's day at the beach. Here's what I remember about it... The author is female, and the illustrations were watercolour. Dearest Hivemind - Does anyone know of examples where the rules of a community or society fall apart after the community becomes less cohesive (i.e., the members of the community come to depend less on each other and interact more infrequently)? I imagine, for example, an instance where you have norms for helping others out in times of need (like sharing food), but then people become less dependent on each other and those norms dissolve. Examples from the academic literature are especially appreciated and they could occur on any scale (e.g., a children's clubhouse, a hunter-gatherer band, an American mid-century town, an organization, contemporary Japan). THANKS!!

I think the cold was so bad because I was weakened from the gastro virus. Now, two weeks later, today is the first day I don't feel sick. However, I feel *really* tired. Normally I sleep five hours a night, but yesterday I slept for 10 hours. Despite that, I feel like I could sleep all day. Is it normal to feel so tired after a bad cold?

I have been a series of unsuccessful relationships where my feelings disappeared over time. I cannot feel love for my long term partner, but also no longer feel love for family members. I have a history of severe depression, which is clearly an issue, but am not currently feeling particularly depressed (by my own standards, if not those of most people). I don't know how to proceed in my current relationship, as I don't know if my feelings are masked, possibly recoverable or just gone forever. I have posted here before about other emotional issues, but I’m keeping this anonymous because the other threads would link this one back to me. The MeFi community was *amazing* last time. This is a much more complex issue, but I would still appreciate your views. Can I learn to love - my partner, myself, anyone? [more inside]

Asking for a colleague. A student is struggling to keep up with the standards of ninth grade English because the teachers are asking him to do in-depth textual analysis. His parents want a book that might help him to improve this skill at home. They are also considering other options but have asked me to research this one. I haven't met the student. Information from American education professionals would be most helpful. Thank you!

I've been listening to Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity. I like it, or substantial parts of it. However, I do not understand why it's an "important" record, as most people seem to agree that it is. I do not know anything technical about music at all, although I listen to a lot of it, and to a lot of "noise" records. Can anyone explain what this album is doing and why it is important? I'm opening up a popup shop in November. The building is not wired for internet and the landlord doesn't want to wire it as such due to the short-term lease. I know about mobile payment systems like Square, but none that I can determine can take Debit in Canada (they're credit card only). This does not work for me. Are there non-Square alternatives that do take debit in Canada? Thanks.

My good friend is in the hospital across the country. She is my age (mid-20s) and has a ton of potential. Because of school and money I only have one chance to fly out, so I won't be visiting her (she is also heavily sedated anyways). There is an at least 50% chance she will die of this (though that is an older number and it has likely gotten worse since then). I'm looking for quotes, poems, prayers, or stories not for her, but for her friends, to help deal with this uncertainty and stress. [more inside]

We just got a used 2012 Subaru Impreza hatchback that only came with one key. We'd like another one, but we don't really want to pay a Subaru dealer $250 to make it. We're looking for a "valet key," not necessarily the remote entry key—no schmancy fob necessary. I did a little googling and it looks like you can't simply take your key to the local locksmith. The key blank contains a chip that requires programming to match your vehicle, so it's not a simple fix like I thought. Is there a way to do this that's cheaper than just having the dealer handle it?

I've been a reasonably satisfied Verizon FiOS customer for a number of years, but they seem to be getting stingier with their discounts for existing customers. I've thought about doing the customer retention game again, but I'm not willing to call their bluff and go to another provider. I've read online that some people have had success canceling and signing up again under their spouses' name. Has anyone done this? If so, do they give full new customer discounts? Do you have to cancel service for some number of days, return equipment, etc?

I've long noticed a pattern in my industry that women get pushed out (or move out?) of creative roles and into "Mom" roles. The stop being compositors/animators/developers and become production assistants and production coordinators. Pay-wise and career-respect-wise, it's a lot like being the default parent - not much pay, and not much respect. Lately, I've noticed more stereotypically gay men (leaning toward the twink/pup variety) taking on production assistant/coordinator roles. Is this related at all to gender roles and default parenting, or am I noticing trends which do not exist? [more inside]

I've had this concept in my head that I'm pretty sure I picked up in economics/management studies but I can't recall its name: The division of labor between an executive and her direct support staff is that staff can advise the executive about decisions to make, but ultimately she makes the decision and they then have to carry out that directive or policy (regardless of whether it's justified in their opinion). I had assumed I was thinking of the principal-agent problem, but that's clearly something else. What is this concept called?
Three years ago we sold a house that we had bought thinking it was 1900 sqft but was actually around 1600 sqft. Metafilter provided excellent advice at the time. We're now under contract to buy a new house that we absolutely love and there's a square footage discrepancy between the property tax record and the MLS listing. The MLS listing is about 275 square feet more (2116 sqft vs. 1,841 sqft). Last time the square footage difference was due to a furnished basement. Hallo. I just arrived in London today for a conference and I'm very tired. I brought my Moto G (1st gen, I think -- not LTE) from Canada, and bought a pay-as-you-go SIM card from EE. Phone and text work fine, but data speeds are miserable -- 0.15 download/upload. It's only connecting on the EDGE network, and I can't get it to use HSPDA. Am I screwed re: data speed? The people at the EE store weren't very helpful; they variably said the speed would improve in a few hours, or that it wouldn't improve at all because it's a Canadian phone. [more inside]

On the spur of the moment, I swung my car by one of those Free Rock Chip Repair stands in a mall parking lot. Part of the process was taking a phone call from a rep from the Rock Chip company, who had to run my insurance to see if it could be covered. He said that he needed my date of birth and the last 4 digits of my SSN (in addition to my address, phone number, email address, insurance info, etc), or he couldn't check my coverage. I was wary, but gave it to him. Should I have not? [more inside]
I have a Wordpress blog, and I want to get rid of a large number (200+) of old, junky blog posts. The question is, should I delete and redirect them, or just noindex them? [more inside]

I need an app to help me organize my folders on my phone and help me know which to delete (I'm an app hoarder who is certain they'll all come in handy) . I remember on PC having a program that broke down how often I used each app and how much space it took up. Stuff like that. Mass deleting the apps that aren't necessary and organizing the ones I want to keep are all things I'd like to be able to do - What's the best app for this?
So, we're redoing our kitchen- a 12x12 space in a 1950s colonial. We did it pretty much down-to the studs. Everything's new except for the original wood frame of the house. I'm a lifelong insomniac. After years of fighting it with "sleep hygiene" and melatonin and all sorts of other supposed remedies that never worked, I finally went to the doctor and got a Trazodone prescription. I took it every night with excellent, side effect-free results for about six years. I recently had to stop the Trazodone, however, because it interferes with another much more important medication that I absolutely must take every day. My sleep is, predictably, terrible again. It's been two months and I know I have to ask my doctor for something else. [more inside]

I work at a psychiatric hospital, on the child and adolescent service. Our kids don't have a lot of opportunity for exercise, which is really not good, given how effective exercise can be for mood regulation, self-confidence, etc. I'd like to find some good exercise DVDs that they can use when they have unstructured time on the unit. I'd like them to be as positive as possible-- not a lot of "burn that flab away" or "let's sculpt sexy butts." [more inside]

Over the past few weeks our Samsung LCD TV has developed an odd habit after we turn it on. It will cycle on and off quite a few times before finally displaying a picture and sound (yesterday it took 25 minutes to come on). During the cycling the picture, if it displays, will be full of vertical lines (usually green or blue). There is usually no sound, except sometimes it will make a deafening screech that sends the cat running. [more inside]

My three year old son has been diagnosed with autism. His psychologist has said on the old scale he would have been classed as "high functioning." I'd love to read a blog or something similar that details how a child with 'high functioning' autism has developed or will develop. Something which is basically a long-term personal story where the kid starts at a similar age to my son and where the kid is now, say, 7 years or older would be perfect. Thanks in advance!
When I was a kid, I got Ranger Rick and Dynamite and Highlights and Cricket and a bunch of other magazines in my name, and it was thrilling for me. Well, Christmas time is rolling around and I have a couple of new kids in my life, a girl age 5 and a boy age 8, and I'd like to get them actual physical magazine subscriptions because that's fun and exciting. What kids magazines actually still exist today as physical get-in-the-mail products? Im looking for a wide range of interests so I can work from a broad pool of possibilities.
My black friend is looking for clothes and pajamas for her size four daughter featuring Princess Tiana, of "The Princess and the Frog." She's specifically looking for these so her daughter can have merchandise from her beloved Disney Princess franchise featuring a character that looks like her. Last year, I unexpectedly fell in love with improv comedy. I raced through the classes, joined a team, and started performing shows on tiny stages throughout NYC. It's been a rewarding experience! Two or so years ago, I read the beginning of a biography of a writer, probably a poet. I know he was a young man in England during World War I who was not able to serve in the war due to a medical condition. But that is all I am certain about -- I have vague memories of a few further details that I could easily be confusing with stories from other people's lives, or even from novels. [more inside]

This sounds like such a first world question. Sorry. I am cringing a bit writing this if it helps. Basically we've been watching "The Great British Bake Off" and have been branching out a bit in our baking and cooking and feeling more adventurous. Simultaneously we lack quite a few 'essential' bits of kitchen equipment recipes frequently call for, and other bits of equipment we do have are ailing and in need of replacing. Basically, this askmefi question concerns what one bit of kit could I buy for my wife's birthday which will answer as many of these needs as possible? [more inside]
Lately (the past few months?), it seems that e-mails from my info@ e-mail address are going straight to the junk/spam folder of current or potential customers. We are a small business and our site/e-mail provider is GoDaddy. About the e-mails themselves....there are usually 1-3 links in the message, and a couple of phone numbers in the signature. No photos or fancy stuff. I use mac mail to send them. Any ideas as to why this keeps happening?
I have an unopened (sealed) can of lump crabmeat that's been refrigerated. It expired about a week ago (best if used by date was a week ago on 10/5). Can I still eat this? Or should I throw it out?
I'm officiating my first wedding next week (Exciting! Scary!) and working on final details. I really would like to include a quote from Jane Jacobs, the couple's hero. “Neighborhood is a word that has come to sound like a Valentine. As a sentimental concept, ‘neighborhood’ is harmful to city planning. Sentimentality plays with sweet intentions in place of good sense.” is what I'm currently playing with, but it's not quite hitting the spot in a way I'd like without over-explaining it. Urban planning and sociology nerds: can you suggest any and all Jane Jacobs quotes that in some way connect with love, community, and growth? I welcome truly any thoughts you have, and feel free to share a bit about how you might use it. THANK YOU!
Hey guys, I have a business in Costa Rica that specializes in tourism and does about $20-$30K of business per month. Does anyone out there know of the best possible option for accepting credit card payments in Costa Rica? Right now we are working through paypal but its certainly not ideal (and neither is requesting cash from our clients). I have already seen and heard of some of these third party entities withholding funds and even denying funds in Costa Rica (and elsewhere). Also, some of the rates on these things look ridiculous. Any help is obviously greatly appreciated!
Why is it that in the morning that a car parked overnight in the garage has no condensation on it but a car parked outside in the driveway is covered with dew? The garage in question is completely open on one end since it's an old horse barn with no doors. I would think the atmosphere in the garage (relative humidity and temp) would be virtually identical to the outside.
In the last 3 months, it's been to 6 auctions. It was reported as a dealer vehicle twice in that time as well. Should I continue looking at it? It's $4500 and I'm thinking of seeing if they'll go down by $500. I've never bought a car this way so I'm open to opinions. [more inside]

If you have found the miracle underwire bra for less than $50 that can be machine washed, I especially want to hear from you. [more inside]
I recently heard that there are new procedures to break up scar tissue that are akin to scoring the surface of a ham, i.e. cross-hatched for max flexibility. I've had an immovable band of scar tissue around my elbow for 15 years that prevents my arm from extending fully, and I'd like to look into this procedure. My google-fu is weak (no, I DON'T need another search result for the Chili Peppers song) -- do you know what it's being called by doctors? Thank you!

My 13 year old daughter has just started boarding school. When she leaves her phone unattended for even a minute, one of her roommates snatches the phone and uses it to send lurid "sexts" to a boy my daughter likes. My daughter is now facing disciplinery action for these messages. How can she protect her phone? Passcodes she forgets, or tells someone. I've looked at fingerprint ID, facial recognition and other methods but they all come up lacking. What do you guys suggest? She has an iPhone 4s.
My BF [26M] is my first. However, I'm [21F] not his. His first was with a good friend with whom he had a 5 year relationship, and still remains good friends with that ex today. They were both each other's first. Out of all the other ex's my BF's had, he only remains friends with this one. Everywhere I look on the internet or in real life, people say they never forget their first love, that they'll always remain a special part of you. Since I've made this realization, I've felt incredibly low. [more inside]
I am looking for a good drug treatment center for my adult son (23) and am finding to locating a decent one is impossible through the internet. Everything I see turns out to be a thinly disguised ad. He approached me about it and I am hoping to help him out with the research. He has good insurance, and is looking for a young adult inpatient program, preferably not AA modeled (or at least not heavily higher power oriented), and preferably with a dual diagnosis slant (he also has anxiety issues). Anywhere in the US would be fine. His drug of choice is opiates, and he has been drug free for the last couple of weeks. Any help would be appreciated - this is an opportunity we don't want to screw up.

I'm arriving at CDG from Seattle around 8 am tomorrow morning and have a subsequent flight out of Orly around 5 pm. I've never been to Paris before. Where should I go for my long layover? Possibly relevant: American, non-francophone, willing to shell out for cabs, and into books/art/music/food/just about everything.

I'm going to spend a day lecturing, to a large group of visiting Chinese art officials, about the nuts and bolts of the American arts system. Literally, from org charts to budgets to curating to education to publicity to fundraising to opening receptions. Yes, that's a vague, enormous topic that I need to narrow down. I'm comfortable with the material; it's the structure and the audience (I'll have a translator) that I'm concerned about. I'm thinking I'll spend the first half of the presentation discussing non-profits, the second half comparing nonprofits to private arts institutions. [more inside]

Hi, everyone. So it's only been my third day of a new job and I had to call in sick. I feel absolutely mortified and really worried about what my manager thinks of me now. I would have still gone if it was just the death-like flu symptoms, but I was also vomiting and I knew I wouldn't have been able to make it there, let alone the rest of the day. On top of that, my wallet was stolen at the doctor's office which had the employee security badge to enter the building inside it, so I'm going to have to ask for a replacement for that as well - in my first week! Talk about bad luck... I called in to let my manager know, and she did say that she would rather not have me come in and spread germs in the office and it was best that I stayed home.Still, I'm very worried about the impression I may have given to her about my reliability. I don't want her to think I'm flaky and not fit for the position. My mind is so fuzzy right now, please help me figure out what I can to assure her that this was a one-time thing and she can be confident that she can trust me to be a reliable employee... Thanks in advance, guys.

I've now had 3 episodes of a weird skin thing (specifics within) that is painful and perplexing and google-resistant. I have an appointment with a dermatologist, but it isn't for several weeks, and I'm not even sure this is actually one for the dermatologist, rather than a GP or even an OB/Gyn. It starts with hot itchy skin and evolves to a pimple-like rash, and it is exclusive to my jawline and chin. Do you know what it might be, and exactly which doctor I should see about it? I really hate going to doctors, so I’d love to get the right doc the first time with this. [more inside]

I am in a slightly long distance relationship of 6 months. We have history and are very serious for the time-frame. Four days ago, my girlfriend spontaneously agreed to hang out with her ex boyfriend when he called her. The next day she told me, claiming to have "emotionally cheated." During this talk she opened up about many things, including hanging out with her ex one other time a month into our relationship, making out with him then and similar, but not sex. Before this discussion, we were at a significant high point in our relationship. How do I move past feelings of betrayal? Should I? [more inside]
I have some frozen ground-beef patties from Costco which are about a year-and-a-half past their best by date. They were bought frozen, stayed frozen, and haven't had any power outages. If not, what sort of things should I use them for which best minimizes freezer-burn taste?

It's 2015, and more and more academic articles from pre-Internet times are getting scanned, indexed, and shared. Back in the day, you might have been able to publish essentially the same paper in journals with mainly domestic subscriber lists in two different countries, and nobody ever would have been the wiser. Somebody did this. The intersection of subscribers was probably less than 25 libraries in this case back then. Twenty years later, and a reader noticed. Author is now a big cheese. My gut tells me to treat this just like any other case of major plagiarism--notify the author, allow them to respond, but then likely public retraction as self-plagiarism and notify employer and journal where Author is now editor. Is there a simple, pretty, clean, non-judgmental term that can describe the state of feeling something strongly that is not correct in a larger context? While I’ve seen terms that capture aspects of this, they have problems: Michael Kimmel’s description of “angry white men” as experiencing “aggreived entitlement” is tied to the decline of privilege. “Misapprehension“ and “misperception” capture the incorrect reading of reality but not the sentiment.
