For your birthday, let's duet

[KaraokeFilter] Karaoke night tonight and one of the group has a birthday at midnight. Help me find something special to sing!

She loves to sing too, so this can be a duet. Heck, it can be a group number, we've got plenty of people coming. Any special karaoke-able, birthday-ish songs out there? Or any other ideas on making tonight's karaoke memorable for her?

If it helps, she's turning 27.

Last time I went to a karaoke bar, there were something like 3500 songs to choose from. We have no idea what music you like or whether you want to sing something anthem-y or ballad-y. Do you want to sing something sweet that she will like, or something that will get the whole bar singing?

My recommendation: wait till you get there and flip through the giant book of songs that they'll have on hand. You'll find something.

birthday, by the beatles. it's awesome, lots of people know it and can sing a lot, and it's loads of fun to sing to and dance to.

27 Jennifers by Mike Doughty? Bonus because she's probably old enough to remember going to school with 27 Jennifers. Man, I love the chorus of that song.

Can't think of any famous songs with "cube" in the title, but I tried really hard. Maybe something by Ice Cube?

Best karaoke surprise I've ever seen was two guys who nonchalantly walked on stage when it was their turn, then announced they were doing a duet, then pulled the girl they had planned to serenade on stage. It turned out they had been practicing "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers all week in preparation. I think what really got her was that the guys had obviously put way more thought and effort into the surprise than anyone else singing karaoke that night—the fact that the song is totally a belt-it-out ballad (with two rock-star guys playing against type) is frosting on the cake.

Or maybe it was just the sheer embarrassment of being pulled on stage as the subject of a serenade. Either way, epic win.

Response by poster: Thanks for the suggestions, . Lia, The Beatles song is a definite candidate.

ErWenn, I just listened to 27 Jennifers. Great song, but it lacks the birthday feel. Why "cube" in the title?

Chrom, I like the embarrassment concept. I think I can work with that.

What's her name?

You can sing to her Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost that Loving Feeling"

Not really birthday-related but fun songs for groups
Joe Esposito - You're the Best Around
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger (with goofy choreography)
Weather Girls - It's Raining Men (get your group of girls to sing)
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (don't solo, get everyone for this)

On preview: damn.

Response by poster: June, her name is Victoria.

If her name is Victoria, I'd see if they have the Kinks' "Victoria". Even though it's a half-wry nostalgia number about the era, and by extension the frumpy monarch, the chorus is just "Victoria" over and over. It. Could. Kick. Ass.

Why "cube" in the title?

3 x 3 x 3 = 27?

Yeah, I'm a dork. 27 is a perfect cube. In my defense, she won't get to celebrate another until she's 64.

(I just spent 5 minutes trying to track down an old song called "Victoria", only to realize it was called "Gloria". Still, it's karaoke, so you don't have to sing the words exactly.)

Ironic by Alanis Morrisette. The way she sings, anyone can Karoake it and come out sounding OK.

Pretty obscure songs but give em a shot on the jukebox

The Kinks - Victoria
Old 97's - Victoria
